You Can Save The World In Style With This Fun, Affordable Italian EVToday I am going to tell you about today a small, 2-door EV hatchback at the very top of my list of used electric vehicles that I would buy if I were in the market for a used EV. Why? It's got attitude, it's got style, it's affordable, and most important... it's fun to drive. 00:45 - INTRO: The 2013-2019 FIAT 500e Today's choice is a quick, fun-to-drive, zero-emission Italian EV that places as much emphasis on style and exciting driving dynamics as it does on helping you do your part to save the planet. So what is it? It's the 2013 through 2019 FIAT 500e. And the “e” is for electric. 02:10 - Your Best Used EV Value? – Buy an Affordable EV Like This to Go With a Used Gasoline Car or Truck It's the best of both worlds and a great way to bridge the gap between an electric vehicle's range and charging anxiety and a gasoline-powered vehicle's high fuel prices and exhaust fumes. 03:50 - What Makes The Fiat 500e a Great Choice in the City?Compact SizeQuick and Responsive HandlingEnough Range for Most City CommutesIt Is An Affordable Used EV That Emphasizes Fun!09:10 - FIAT'S CEO Didn't Love The Fiat 500eTo meet California's strict emission mandates, Fiat had to produce and sell an electric car in the state. So they commissioned Bosch to turn the gas-powered Fiat 500 into an electric vehicle or EV. Bosch engineers removed the internal combustion engine and drive train and then install an ingenious EV power train with a liquid-cooled battery pack that was as good as any available at the time. But it wasn't cheap, and at the time, Fiat CEO, Sergio Marchionne complained that it cost the company an additional $14,000 for every Fiat 500e sold. This is good fortune for used Fiat 500e buyers because you get a fun to drive EV with a well-designed electric drive train at a reasonable price. 11:40 - Other Things That Make the Fiat 500e GreatAttractive Exterior StylingA Functional, Yet Stylish Interior 16:10 - What is Not So Great About The Fiat 500e?
Over the past two years, Fiat Chrysler has seen some dramatic highs and some crushing lows. After the automaker endured the sudden passing of longtime leader Sergio Marchionne in 2018, it concluded 2019 with a binding agreement to merge with Peugeot to form the world’s fourth largest car company.Sandwiched in between these events was FCA’s quiet settlement of a lawsuit that stemmed from a 2016 case where the company was accused of manipulating dealer sales figures. A group of dealers in Illinois had held fast to a lawsuit claiming FCA was guilty of racketeering and anticompetitive practices when it pressured dealers to inflate sales numbers in exchange for a greater allotment of the fastest-selling models. And while FCA settled this dealer suit and averted a lawsuit, it appears they weren’t able to breathe easy for long. Automotive News is reporting that a new group of dealers, this time in New York, is threatening FCA with a lawsuit for an entirely different reason. The New York State Automobile Dealers Association has reportedly sent a cease-and-desist letter to Fiat Chrysler, alleging the auto maker’s dealer incentives give an unfair advantage to larger dealerships.Fiat Chrysler is attempting to clear inventory at the manufacturing level, a strategy designed to avoid saddling plants with thousands of unassigned vehicles when dealer orders mismatch what’s been produced. This year, FCA is offering dealers a $1,500 voucher for every vehicle they buy from the inventory pool and some angry dealers say this is tantamount to 2-tiered pricing: rewarding larger dealers -- those, typically, with more cash to carry inventory -- by selling them vehicles at a lower price.According to Automotive News, Fiat Chrysler claims its vehicle surplus is due to a production method that’s been trimming costs at the manufacturing level and not, as the dealers claim, because it’s over-producing and pressuring dealers to ease the glut. Bloomberg reported last fall that CEO Mike Manley said that “Working with our dealer network to achieve and maintain discipline with stock levels continues to be one of (the company’s) top priorities.”
Earlier in the week, Fiat Chrysler became the last among the Detroit 3 to sit down at the bargaining table with the United Autoworkers Union. And while it’s easy to predict at least some drama, a new twist revealed Wednesday will provide a backdrop for the talks that NBC News is calling “explosive.”That’s because rival automaker General Motors has just filed a federal racketeering lawsuit, alleging a decade-long conspiracy between FCA and the UAW. And the mastermind behind it, according to the suit, is former – and now deceased – Fiat Chrysler CEO, Sergio Marchionne.GM contends that FCA corrupted bargaining agreements between 2009 and 2015, meaning GM wound up on the hook for labor costs it otherwise wouldn’t have. GM also alleges that the union was directed to deny the same benefits to GM that it was allowing for FCA, a claim they support by pointing to the $8-per-hour difference in labor costs between the two automakers, perhaps because FCA was quietly permitted by the union to hire more temporary workers at lower wages. The suit said FCA was "the clear sponsor of pervasive wrongdoing, paying millions of dollars in bribes to obtain benefits, concessions and advantages in the negotiation, implementation and administration of labor agreements over time." GM contends this scheme saddled it with billions in costs and a significant disadvantage – and while it won’t yet put a number on the damages it intends to pursue, GM’s general counsel Craig Glidden says it is likely to be “substantial.”FCA responded harshly to the lawsuit, suggesting its content and timing were “intended to disrupt (its) proposed merger with PSA as well as (its) negotiations with the UAW.” That said, FCA’s cozy relationship with the UAW has come to light in recent years, as an ongoing corruption probe into the union has revealed several executives complicit in a bribery scheme intended to divert funds to union officials in the name of “relationship building.”In perhaps the most explosive of all the claims is the part of the lawsuit where GM alleges that Sergio Marchionne was scheming to take over GM by merger, and he would enable favorable terms by having the union in his pocket – a pursuit he allegedly laid the groundwork for by authorizing UAW bribery. For its part, GM denies the lawsuit was timed to either disrupt union talks or to derail FCA’s proposed merger.

Fiat-Chrysler & Renault, two unimpressive vaguely European carmakers agreed to merge. This is destined to fail. But why? Show #428. Can You Help Me Fight The Fossils? Read More About Patreon here EVne.ws/patreon Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 28th March 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today, and picked out the best ones to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. A developing story today in the UK. You know I talk about the carrot and the stick, in terms of what is needed to persuade people into EVs? We have the carrot here in the UK with £3500 off a new EV, but I also talk about the success of Norway using the stick. Hitting people with penalties to buy fossil cars. Now today in the UK there's a story about putting up tax on petrol to push people into considering alternatives. More tomorrow. DAIMLER, GEELY CREATE 50:50 JOINT VENTURE TO DEVELOP SMART The Daimler-owned Smart brand is something which hasn't been a huge commercial success and yet they've kept investing in it, and more recently, electrifying it. Most famous for making small cars it is being given a new lease of life. "Daimler is willing to give the brand another shot by teaming up with Lotus and Volvo owner Geely to transform Smart into a pure EV brand. Announced today, the deal involving Daimler and Geely represents a 50:50 joint venture in China where a new factory will be built to handle production of zero-emissions models." Says Adrian Padeanu for Motor1.com today: "These future cars will be styled by Mercedes and engineered by Geely, with the first models scheduled to hit the market globally from 2022. Interestingly, aside from ditching combustion engines altogether, the Smart brand will expand into the B-segment, which means the next decade will bring us subcompact cars from a brand exclusively known for its cutesy A-segment cars." Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars, said: “For more than 2.2 million customers, smart represents a pioneer in urban mobility. Based on this success story, we look forward to further enhancing the brand with Geely Holding, a strong partner in the electric vehicle segment. We will jointly design and develop the next generation of smart electric cars that combine high-quality production and known safety standards for sale both in China and globally." https://www.motor1.com/news/315724/daimler-geely-joint-venture-smart/ BMW WILL BUILD MINI ELECTRIC IN UK DESPITE BREXIT CONCERNS "Despite a number of carmakers saying that they’ll pull out of Britain when Brexit eventually happens BMW is pushing ahead with plans to produce the all-electric Mini over here. According to Automotive News Europe, BMW isn’t planning to implement any major changes to any of its plans in the UK – including the Oxford factory which is earmarked for electric Mini assembly." reports InsideEVs.com today: "The manufacturer is anticipating zero to five percent tariffs on goods if Britain leaves the EU without a deal, something that “won’t change Mini’s business model”. However, BMW’s chief executive officer Harald Krueger has warned that BMW could still move production to countries like the Netherlands at some point in the future should problems arise further down the line. The first electric Mini has been slated to begin production this year, and will become available worldwide, including the US where there is a possibility the brand could become electric-only in the coming years in a bid to boost sales." https://insideevs.com/bmw-build-mini-electric-uk/ SMOKING BMW I8 DUMPED IN WATER BY FIREFIGHTERS A tweet from the Fire Department in the Netherlands: "This morning an electric car started to smoke in a showroom. The employees of the garage and the fire brigade acted quickly to drive the car outside. Because it is an electric car, inventive action was necessary. The car is immersed in a container of water because extinguishing it in the 'normal' way is difficult with these cars. The car will remain in the water basin for the next 24 hours." Chris Bruce at Motor1 raises a good point though: "What's not clear is whether this is the fire department's usual reaction to an electrified vehicle fire. Traveling with a crane and giant water tank doesn't seem very convenient. Plus, if the BMW were already in flames, picking it up and placing the coupe into container doesn't seem safe. What's not clear is whether this is the fire department's usual reaction to an electrified vehicle fire. Traveling with a crane and giant water tank doesn't seem very convenient. R will take on another special challenge in September 2019. Romain Dumas (F) will be back at the wheel of the 500-kW electric sports car for the “China Challenge” on the Tianmen Shan Big Gate Road – a unique stretch of tarmac, featuring 99 corners, which winds its way up Tianmen Mountain, located roughly 1,500 kilometres southwest of Beijing. As no official record exists for the eleven-kilometre mountain road, which is not accessible to public transport, Volkswagen China will run a competition prior to the record attempt, in which participants can set their own virtual time on the Tianmen Shan Big Gate Road. Dumas will then attempt to better the time of the fastest participant under real conditions in September. The Volkswagen ID. R, with which Romain Dumas set records at two famous hill climbs in June 2018 – first at the “Pikes Peak International Hill Climb” and then at the “Goodwood Festival of Speed” – is powered by two electric engines generating a total output of 500 kW (680 PS) and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.25 seconds. Before travelling to China in September, Dumas and the record-breaking ID. R will first set their sights on a new lap record for electric cars on the famous Nürburgring-Nordschleife. FIRST MERCEDES-BENZ ECITARO STARTS SERVICE IN BERLIN "Berlin Transport Authority (BVG) has received the first out of 15 ordered all-electric Mercedes-Benz eCitaro buses." reports InsideEVs.com: "The other thing is that Mercedes-Benz eCitaro currently is equipped with batteries of 243 kWh, which is enough only for 150 km (93 miles)." It's good news, but here's the context: Last autumn, BVG placed an order for up to 950 low-emission Mercedes‑Benz Citaro buses. It is the largest single order ever for Europe’s best-selling city bus. At almost the same time, BVG also ordered 15 fully-electric eCitaro buses. https://insideevs.com/mercedes-benz-ecitaro-berlin/ TESLA'S MUSK POKES FUN AT RAM TRUCKS 'PUNY' TOWING ABILITY Dodge Ram Owner @RamLover69 You would still be physically fatigued if you tried to haul 12,000 lbs of steel beams like I do every day with my Dodge Ram, 2019s motor trend truck of the year. @elonmusk 12,000 lbs!? SEAT ELECTRIC STRATEGY INCLUDSE SIX ELECTRIC The electric version of the Mii and el-Born will be the brand’s first two fully electric models, while the new generation Leon and the Tarraco will feature a plug-in hybrid version. Furthermore, the CUPRA Leon and the CUPRA Formentor will also have a plug-in hybrid variant. SEAT President Luca de Meo also announced today at the company’s annual media conference that the CUPRA Formentor, the new CUV that was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show, will be built at the Martorell factory. For the first time in the history of the company, SEAT will develop a new vehicle platform in collaboration with the Volkswagen brand, a smaller version of the Modular Electric Drive Toolkit (MEB) on which multiple vehicles of the size of around four metres in length by different brands, SEAT among them, will be made. The goal of the new platform is to develop affordable electric vehicles, with an entry level price below 20,000 euros. More than 300 highly skilled engineers will be participating in this project in Spain. https://www.seat-mediacenter.com/newspage/allnews/company/2019/SEAT-will-launch-six-electric-and-plug-in-hybrid-models-and-develop-a-new-platform-in-Spain-for-electric-vehicles.html GAC AION S IS EQUIPPED WITH 58.8 KWH CATL NCM 811 BATTERY "The GAC New Energy Automobile Co., Ltd. (GAC NE), the newest arm of GAC, recently announced specifications for the upcoming Aion S all-electric sedan, scheduled for market launch in China in May 2019." reports Mark Kane for InsideEVs.com: "The car, which was by GAC compared to the Tesla Model 3, is equipped with the latest NCM 811 battery cells supplied by CATL. The total capacity is 58.8 kWh, which should be enough for 510 km (317 miles) under NEDC. In the real world, we would expect more than 350 km (218 miles) of range." https://insideevs.com/gac-aion-s-58-8-kwh-catl-ncm-811-battery/ RENAULT SEEKS MERGER WITH NISSAN AND FCA Partnerships among the world’s automakers appear to be increasing, be it a win-win collaboration on technology or a full-blown merger. The latest report from Automotive News Europe suggests the latter, this time between Renault and Nissan that would eventually include Fiat Chrysler Automobiles as well. The information comes from a report in Financial Times (subscription required) that cites anonymous sources allegedly in the know about the deal on both sides of the fence." according to Motor1.com: "During the tenure of FCA’s former boss Sergio Marchionne, there were more than a few rumors regarding mergers and purchases, primarily with Chinese automakers. This new report speaks of a freshly merged Renault-Nissan company seeking to acquire FCA as well, ultimately creating a large corporation with enough clout to compete with the likes of Toyota and Volkswagen. In this scenario from Finacial Times, a Renault-Nissan alliance would go after FCA within 12 months" https://www.motor1.com/news/315686/renault-seeks-merger-nissan-fca/ And finally thanks to Fredrik who sent me a link to a site which tracks the VIN numbers and registrations in Norway... This week, Daniel Howes says Fiat Chrysler’s plans to invest $4.5 billion and create 6,500 tax-paying jobs to build a new Jeep plant in Detroit vindicates late-CEO Sergio Marchionne’s call three years ago to abandon small cars in the United States and weight the lineup more heavily to trucks and SUVs. A company controlled by Italians and run by a Briton insists that authentic Jeeps come from the industrial Midwest. It’s hard to overstate the reality and symbolism here: Detroit just landed a prize like it hasn’t in a long time.

This week, Howes says former Fiat Chrysler Automobiles CEO Sergio Marchionne, who died this week in a Zurich hospital, gambled on Detroit redemption. And he won, saving some great American brands and tens of thousands of jobs in Michigan and around the country. His impact on the global auto industry cannot be overstated.
NOTE: This was recorded before the news of Sergio Marchionne's passing. (Monday, July 23rd) Can you tell which regular member of the Podcast didn't take this race too well? Hint: His name starts with A and ends with Dre Harrison. In this special episode, we focus on the German Grand Prix, which had one of the barmiest second halves ever, with rain, team orders, rule infrignements and a heartbreaking crash from the lead! You know when most of the 90 minutes was on the race itself, it's a true classic! Also, the news, featuring Force India's financial difficulties, and the possibility of 18-inch rims returning to F1, as well as the banning of tyre warmers for 2021! Enjoy the show!

Join Paul and me. literally, in a very special episode of the FBC Podcast. We were both in Dayton at the Finali Mondiali event. Paul was working the event and trying to stage 1,000 Ferrari's and I was working with the wonderful people at Shell covering the event for all of you. We are rarely in the same room so I took a couple of mics and a recorder and this is the best we could do on short notice with no notes. I'll have a FBC Downshift episode for you with the interviews I did including Marc Gené, Kimi Raikkonen, Sebastian Vettel, Sergio Marchionne and Maurizio Arrivebene. HUGE thank you to the amazing crew at Shell for allowing me to work the event and bring you, the FBC community, some very special content. If you get a chance, let Shell know you appreciate their friendship with us otherwise, we'd never have access to the content we all enjoy. @Shell_US Normally the Nico Rosberg announcement would be worthy of a special podcast but we were in transit to Dayton when it happened and this is as quick as we could cover so we share our thoughts on his decision and his possible replacements.
