As always, there was a lot happening in startup land this week, and the Equity team had so much fun breaking it down for you.On today's episode of TechCrunch's Equity podcast, Mary Ann and Rebecca discussed Robinhood's plans to buy European crypto exchange Bitstamp for $200 million in cash and why they weren't really surprised by the news. The duo then dug into not just one but two exciting health-care related deals. Rebecca wanted to riff on Sword Health's innovative AI-powered virtual physical therapy tech and recent fundraise and corresponding cool valuation bump. Mary Ann then brought up Eko Health, which just raised $41 million after getting FDA clearance to help detect the first signs of heart failure during a routine medical exam (really, how cool is that?!).From there, they got to grill transportation reporter extraordinaire Sean O'Kane about his in-depth investigation into the mess at electric vehicle manufacturer Fisker. Think hoods flying off and pinching parts from the production line kind of mess. Oof.From there, they talked about the drama at AI mortgage startup LoanSnap and how that company is being sued left and right among other things. On a more positive note, they then riffed about two very interesting fintech startups focused on Gen Z, Frich (which stands for ‘effin rich) and Fizz – the latter of which is a YC alum just raised $14.4 million in a seed round led by Kleiner Perkins. That's it for this week, but we'll be back bright and early Monday with more tech and startup news. Welcome to this week's Episode of Equity Monday. We're kicking off the week with a deep dive from this weekend into the demise of electric vehicle startup Fisker at the hands of its founders' whims. Fisker, which was founded by famed vehicle designer Henrik Fisker, is on the brink of bankruptcy after only having delivered a few thousand electric Ocean SUVs. Then, Rebecca Bellan talked about X's new rules to allow adult content (as long as it's "consensually produced," whatever that means), and why that's problematic for the safety of other users -- namely women, who are most often the targets of sexually explicit trolling and harassment. We also touched on Trump's TikTok debut, which came in the wake of the former president's felony conviction. To wrap up, Bellan also discussed a story that TechCrunch published over the weekend looking into the new trend of smaller, lesser-known investors getting shares of hot private AI companies like Anthropic, X.ai and Perplexity by using special purpose vehicles, or SPVs. The result has been a Wild West, high risk, buyer-beware situation, with SPV terms varying wildly. Haje closed out the show with another Pitch Deck Teardown, this time looking into the Angel pitch deck for RAW Dating App. RAW just raised a $3 million friends and family round to shake up the dating scene by shedding fake, TikTok-ified, heavily filtered photos and replacing them with a more genuine, unvarnished experience. The EV revolution presents a transformative opportunity for the automotive industry, enticing entrepreneurs with its potential impact. However, it's a challenging venture, far removed from the simplicity of starting an app or social media company. Building factories, designing vehicles, and getting around government hurdles require billions of dollars and strategic planning. Some turn to Special Purpose Acquisition Companies (SPACs) or crowd funding to raise funds, but underestimating capital costs is a common pitfall. Success stories like Tesla and BYD emulate strategies of industry giants like Ford and General Motors, but failures such as Fisker, Lordstown Motors, IndieEV, and WM highlight the difficulty of balancing innovation with industry traditions in this fiercely competitive market.Link to the featured video:https://youtu.be/G4d5yV2BXdI?si=YnafyXylgcZuyuh9Grab a copy of my book:https://partsmanagerpro.gumroad.com/l/qtqax"The Parts Manager Guide" - https://www.amazon.com/Parts-Manager-Guide-Strategies-Maximize-ebook/dp/B09S23HQ1P/ref=sr_1_4?crid=3UZYOGZJUNJ9K&keywords=parts+manager+guide&qid=1644443157&sprefix=parts+manager+guid%2Caps%2C244&sr=8-4Please remember to like, share and leave your comments.Videos are uploaded weekly.Visit my website for more!https://www.partsmanagerprof.com/If you want me to continue making videos like these, please donate to our paypal account: paypal.me/partsmanagerproFair use is a use permitted by copyright statute that might otherwise be infringing. Canoo, like many other electric vehicle startups, is struggling to survive. And as is often the case in the early days of a company, expenditures exceed revenue. But one cost in particular stood out in Canoo's latest earnings report.TechCrunch spotted an item near the bottom of a 10-K the company recently filed with the SEC and it details just how much Canoo is reimbursing CEO Tony Aquila for the use of his personal aircraft. The company said it helps cover certain costs and third-party payments, excluding certain incidental fees and expenses, and that it resulted in Canoo incurring approximately $1.7 million last year and $1.3 million in 2022.Download and listen to the audio version below and click here to subscribe to the Today in Manufacturing podcast.

EV startup Polestar was recently flirting with bankruptcy. The company, which started as an engineering team modifying Volvos for racing in the late 2000s, was spun out of Volvo in October 2017 as a standalone brand focusing on electric cars.Last November, Polestar was looking at a $1.3 billion shortfall when Geely Holding and Volvo Cars stepped up to fill the gap and keep the company above water until 2025. During that time, it hoped to get the Polestar 3 and 4, crossover models with higher margins, out the door.Download and listen to the audio version below and click here to subscribe to the Today in Manufacturing podcast.

Electric vehicle startup Canoo has filed suit against one of its largest shareholders, demanding that the firm pay back more than $61 million in “short-swing profits.”
Automotive News Canada Tim Dimopolous recently travelled to the VinFast assembly plant in Haiphong, Vietnam to get the story on how the electric-vehicle startup came to be. He also found a Canadian connection and discussed the automaker's plan for Canada.
Automotive News is calling it a “talent drain,” as it revealed this week that more executives have left the EV startup, Canoo.Canoo gained an early foothold in the EV startup race with its unique designs including “lifestyle vehicles.” These electric options, described by Canoo as a “loft on wheels” pair 250 miles of range with configurable interiors that feature wraparound backseats, better-than-average legroom and a bubble-like cockpit. Canoo also offers block-shaped delivery vans and pickups that are set to come after the lifestyle vehicle debuts later this year. But design chops are only one piece of the puzzle in automotive and in this case, Canoo has struggled with a tumultuous year that's been highlighted by the abrupt departure of its CEO, an SEC investigation and ongoing volatility with its stock price. That's a lot to take for a company that was just formed in 2017… and now there's more.Automotive News has reported that Canoo is hemorrhaging talent, citing several “key executives” who have fled the company in recent weeks. Departures, identified by an Auto News source who wished to remain confidential, include vehicle program lead Nicolas Leblanc as well as Richard Walker, who oversaw software controls. The source also said Mike de Jung and Steven Offutt, engineering experts who were some of the company's earliest employees, are also departing.

Jim Cramer and David Faber began the show by discussing the biggest IPO on a U.S. exchange since Alibaba in 2014. Rivian -- the electric vehicle maker backed by Amazon and Ford -- raises more than $11-billion in its public offering and lists on the Nasdaq under ticker symbol RIVN. Jim and David explored Rivian's public debut, its expected valuation and what it means for EV rivals such as Tesla, which saw its shares fall 16% on Monday and Tuesday combined. Inflation also in the spotlight: The Consumer Price Index jumped 6.2% in October for its biggest year-over-year surge since 1990. Two former GE executives joined the program to discuss the company's planned breakup: Discovery CEO David Zaslav and former Honeywell CEO Dave Cote. Also in focus: Nasdaq looks to bounce back after ending its 11-day win streak, and several stocks making double-digit moves on earnings news, including Doordash's big surge.
CEO David Trainer sat down with Chuck Jaffe of Money Life to talk about our Danger Zone pick this week: Rivian: This IPO Won't Deliver. The post Podcast: Why This EV Startup is in the Danger Zone appeared first on New Constructs.

It's rumored to be in talks to go public GGPI, Gores Guggenheim at a $25B valuation, or 38 times it's 2020 revenue of $600M. No other EV startup has the internal capabilities, infrastructure and production horsepower that Volvo provides. Volvo is essentially harboring Polestar's success, and anticipates building the Polestar 3 SUV in Volvo's Ridgeville South Carolina's production plants. Polestar entered into an alliance with charging infrastructure company ChargePoint earlier this year to create seamless charging. Through the partnership, an in-car app will let Polestar 2 owners plug in the vehicle and charge with billing and payment already completed. Polestar aims to be sustainability-centric. The interiors of their vehicles built from environment-friendly materials, including recycled PET bottles, reclaimed fishing nets, and recycled cork vinyl. Additionally, the EV manufacturer aims to reduce the weight of interior components by 50 percent and reduce plastic content by 80 percent via the utilization of a flax-based composite. What's next for Polestar? The company wants to DOUBLE its global retail stores to 100, add more service centers and 60 more test drive locations by the end of 2021. It's also reported that the 2022 Polestar 2 Beats Tesla Model 3's Range and Could Start As Low As $35,000 2 MINUTE PUMP: The 2 Minute Pump is miniseries of @Disrupting that's hosted by Dana Donovick, Co-Founder of Disrupting. VOLKSWAGEN SHEDS BUGATTI, MAKER OF OVER-THE-TOP SPORTS CARS - Volkswagen said Monday that it was giving up control of Bugatti, the storied automaker whose absurdly expensive hypercars are worshiped by aficionados but seemed incongruous at a company better known for economical Golfs and Passats. Bugatti, whose Chiron model starts at close to $3 million, will become part of a joint venture between Volkswagen's Porsche unit and Rimac, a young Croatian company that has made a name for itself doing design and engineering projects for large carmakers. - The deal undoes a major legacy of Ferdinand Piëch, who dominated Volkswagen for two decades and built the company into a global empire. Volkswagen's purchase of Bugatti out of bankruptcy in 1998, long before it owned Porsche, was widely seen as an indulgence by Mr. Piëch with questionable business logic - Oliver Blume, the chief executive of Porsche, acknowledged Monday that the deal removes a distraction for Volkswagen and allows the company to focus on more important tasks. Original Source : https://www.nytimes.com/2021/07/05/business/volkswagen-bugatti.html VW OFFLOADS BUGATTI TO RIMAC TO FORM NEW EV COMPANY BUGATTI-RIMAC - The company recently unveiled the Nevera, a hypercar powered by a 120kWh battery pack and four motors to achieve a staggering 1.4MW of power, which is about 1,914 horsepower. It can go from 0 to 60 mph in 1.85 seconds and has a top speed of 258 mph. The Nevera is expected to be the fastest sports car, a spot previously held by the Bugatti Chiron's. - Rimac's meteoric rise from bootstrapping in a garage in 2009 to building supercars with one of the most desirable and well-known car brands demonstrates how electric vehicles are beginning to take over the luxury and sports car market. It's not just about doing what's right for the environment – it's about pioneering speed in the future of automobiles. Along with this announcement, Rimac said it would separate the development, production and supply of battery systems, drivetrains and other EV components into a new entity owned by Rimac Group called Rimac Technology, which will work independently with other global car manufacturers. - Mate Rimac will continue to hold his 37% share in Rimac Group, with Hyundai Motor Group holding the same 12% and other investors at 27%, according to a statement from the company. Porsche recently upped its stake in Rimac from 15% to 24%, but its total ownership doesn't give It a controlling interest in the new EV company, the companies told FT. HERE'S WHAT TO KNOW - Stellantis, the world's fourth-largest car maker, will host its EV Day on Thursday and unveil more details around its electrification strategy. The company, formed earlier this year through the merger between Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and Peugeot, already has an electric-vehicle strategy, which it set out in April. - The group has grown market share in Europe so far in 2021, accounting for 16.8% of new BEV registrations in the region from January to May, according to automotive analyst Matthias Schmidt. That puts it second behind Volkswagen — 25.7% — and ahead of the Renault-Nissan alliance with 12.3% and Tesla with 11.5%. - BoA analysts expected Stellantis to deliver a “bullish message” on Thursday to make it clear to investors the company wouldn't be left behind in the electric revolution. “In our view, the only thing that Stellantis has to do is to put the various puzzle pieces together and explain some more details on essential strategy items (i.e. on battery chemistries, cell technology, cost assumptions for the EV line up, differences in planning between North America and Europe, capex requirements, etc.),” they said. - Stellantis is also reportedly set to announce plans to produce electric vans at its Ellesmere Port factory in northwest England. With plans to start operations in 2022, the partners intend to invest together 500 million Euros to install and operate at least 1,700 high-performance green energy charging points close to highways as well as at logistic and destination points, within five years from the establishment of the joint venture (JV). - The future JV is planned to operate under its own corporate identity based in Amsterdam, Netherlands. - Battery electric vehicle fleet operators will be able to leverage both fast charging tailored to the 45-minute mandatory rest period in Europe focusing on long-distance transport—the highest priority of the future JV—and also charge overnight. Deliveries for the electric crossover with these batteries would start in July. When we check Tesla's website about the Model Y Standard Range for Hong Kong, the company says that deliveries will start in September. The estimated range for the vehicle is higher than that for the Model 3 Standard Range Plus, which would achieve 448 km (278 mi). - That's a 10% increase compared to the Model 3 SR+ value. - Although the Model Y Standard Range for Hong Kong could confirm the LFP rumors, the price and range differences suggest that Model Y Standard Range may have 2170 cells. However, if that is the case, Tesla could also offer this derivative in the US. - Another feasible explanation for the disparities is that Tesla developed a larger LFP battery pack for the Model Y. RIMAC TO BUY MAJORITY STAKE IN BUGATTI FROM VOLKSWAGEN - According to a media report, the Croatian electric car specialist Rimac wants to acquire a majority stake in VW subsidiary Bugatti. Rimac is to be floated on the stock market by 2022. - according to the German publication Manager Magazin citing those close to the matter, the Bugatti deal is close to completion. - Volkswagen is initially expected to transfer responsibility for Bugatti to Porsche, and Porsche would then form a joint venture with Rimac in which Rimac would acquire 55 per cent of Bugatti's shares. In comparison, Porsche would control 45 per cent. However, Porsche's stake in Rimac, which was increased to 24 per cent in March, is apparently to remain unaffected by the deal. The 50MW lithium-ion battery is directly connected to the UK's high-voltage transmission system, run by National Grid. - An 8km private wire network will deliver power from the battery to both public and commercial EV charging locations across the city. These will include the UK's largest public charging hub, with up to 10MW of power on site, which will feature 38 fast to ultra-rapid chargersdelivering 100% renewable energy to EV drivers day and night when it opens in a few months' time.Fastned will initially install 10 chargers at the hub with 300kW of power - Matt Allen, CEO of Pivot Power, which has led the £41 million Government-backed scheme, said: “This is the first grid-scale battery to directly connect to the transmission network in the UK, and represents a key milestone for the completion of Energy Superhub Oxford and our mission to accelerate the UK towards net zero. We are planning up to 40 similar sites throughout the country.” Original Source : https://www.fleeteurope.com/en/new-energies/europe/article/new-50mw-battery-goes-live-support-ev-charging PIVOT POWER OXFORD SUPERHUB - An EV public superhub at one of Oxford's Park & Rides will provide up to 50 charge points catering for a range of vehicles and speeds, so that visitors can charge in minutes or while they work or shop in the city. The network has the capacity to expand with EV adoption and provide power for local businesses seeking to electrify their fleets, from logistics companies to bus operators. It shares a connection to National Grid's high voltage transmission network with a 50MW hybrid battery storage system, helping our electricity network to make more use of renewable energy. This means that as more EVs hit the road, we can increase the amount of low carbon electricity powering them and accelerate Oxford's journey to zero carbon. The FSD Suite has been primed for a new release for several months, and Musk has hinted toward an imminent rollout of the semi-autonomous driving functionality. - Musk said early this morning that “we [Tesla] need to fix some obvious issues before releasing beta 9, hopefully next week.” This has been a repetitive tone of the Tesla CEO, who says that he's currently utilizing FSD “Alpha 9” in his personal vehicle. - I'm driving “alpha” 9, but we need to fix some obvious issues before releasing beta 9, hopefully next week. FSD subscription capability should be turning on via the Tesla app. — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) June 25, 2021 - The most recent update to the FSD Beta V9 came on June 6th, when Musk updated Tesla owners with details on what was expected to be V9's long-awaited release. “One more production release of pure vision this week, then FSD Beta 9 a week or two later. V9.0 FSD is also pure vision. Foundational improvements are immense,” he said. This would have slotted V9 to be rolled out to customers on June 20th, at the latest. That included running major appliances or lowering thermostats. But it did not tell electric vehicle owners they couldn't charge their cars, as a June 21 Facebook post claims. The post said the state “literally” told electric vehicle owners not to charge their cars. - California ISO also suggested residents lower their thermostats earlier in the day to “pre-cool” their homes and charge electric vehicles before the alert was in effect. It did not require electric vehicle owners to stop charging their cars. For multiple charging single day I will review route on ABRP (A Better Route Planner). Web on laptop for better big picture or Phone App if remote. Then use in-car routing. For multi-day family road trips I plan either way picking hotels and venues. In this case I will attempt to find hotels with charging or hotels near charging. For example in Carson City I found a reasonable hotel that was only 3 blocks from free Level 2 charging at a government building. The car does a good job but seemingly not Tesla level yet, but the car excels in other areas. :-) MARK BUCKINGHAM Easy! Many people I talk to don't realise this is also available on Tesla's website. KENNY STRONG When I go on a long journey I try to have a Plan A and PLan B for each stop. it's not always possible but you have to be prepared for a charger to be busy, or worse blocked by an ICE car, so I always try to stop where there is another option closeby. LESLIE IN BIRMIGNHAM This is without doubt the worse part of any EV I've driven. But in a way I understand it. You have to try and collate tens or hundreds of different networks, hopefully provide some sort of live update, and then expect it to be in every model of EV on the market? It's almost impossible. The Uniti One is a new electric hatchback from Uniti, an EV startup headquartered in Sweden with engineering and production in the United Kingdom. The project started at an open innovation research lab at Lund University, and we could soon see the first vehicles on the road. Uniti One is a city car with a range of up to 186 miles; however, the standard 12 kWh battery will have a range of about 93 miles. Still, if you use a 50 kW rapid DC charger for 10 minutes, you will have about 62 miles, which would easily fit the average American's 32-mile round trip commute. The EV tops out at 74.5 mph and has a curb weight of about 1,322.77 pounds. The designers want to create a smartphone-like digital experience for the changing needs of society. The One has a clean, if not minimalist, design. This Tuesday, the company started taking orders for production models of the climate-neutral electric car that will be revealed at an event later this year. Like Tesla, the company plans to roll out new features like software updates. If you get in early, you'll receive all upgrades for free for the life of your car.The petite design is reminiscent of a more encased version of the Elio Motors Autocycle, mostly in that the passengers or "co-pilots" sit behind the driver. At least the One has room for two in the back. According to designboom, the city car will first be available in Sweden before rolling out in the UK halfway through next year. The cost works out to about USD$19,000.
Nio delivered fewer cars as the government phases out subsidies for electric vehicles. Electric vehicles are considered part of the future of transportation, but in the present day, conventional automakers tend to have trouble selling them, and startups tend to have trouble making money on them. The latest example of the latter phenomenon appears to be Nio, a Chinese company listed on Wall Street and backed by the Tencent conglomerate and other major tech and investment firms. Nikkei reports that the startup EV maker, after laying off hundreds last month, canceled its scheduled earnings call and slashed 1,000 more jobs this week. The reason? The company reported a $478 million loss in its latest quarter, far steeper than both the previous quarter and for the same window last year. Nio vehicle deliveries, meanwhile, dropped 10 percent compared to the previous quarter. Officials vowed to implement efficiency and cost-cutting measures amid challenging market conditions, but the Nikkei report suggested the latest in a series of blows to the company raised serious questions about its long-term viability. Nio recalled more than 4,800 cars earlier this summer, and faces growing competition in the EV segment — particularly as Tesla prepares to open up a factory in Shanghai. More damaging, however, was the Chinese government’s move to phase out subsidies for electric vehicles. Nio cars reportedly cost car buyers $8,000 more today than they did just one year ago. The company plans to raise $200 million from Tencent and its CEO, but the Nikkei reports the company also expects to get $1.5 billion from a state-owned capital fund under a deal announced earlier this year — which would certainly go a long way toward helping anyone’s bottom line

Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Wednesday 25th July edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport. AUDI E-TRON GETS CLOSER We're now just over a month away from the official launch of the Audi e-tron Crossover, the first fully electric Audi and the first of the e-tron range. Reuters report "The e-tron crossover will be revealed Aug. 30 in Brussels and will have a range of about 240 miles. Audi CEO Rupert Stadler quoted the price in Germany as 80,000 euros (about $95,000) — that's compared to 77,850 euros for the entry-model Jaguar I-Pace S AWD and 92,230 euros for the entry-level Tesla Model X 75D." Sometimes on here I get bit of kickback for being positive of ALL electric car makers, and especially when those large legacy auto makers are being forced into it by Tesla, because we know they can operate at scale when they want. And Audi in Hungary is one example, where 6,000 employees produce about 9,000 engines each day for 32 production plants of the Volkswagen Group, that's almost 2million combustion engines in 2017. If they turn their focus to EVs it would be huge news. And from the VW Press Office: "On Tuesday, series production of electric motors officially started in Győr. The company has invested a double digit million amount to set up the motor production facility. Approximately 100 people are employed in this new area at present. For the production of electric motors, Audi Hungaria installed the innovative production equipment and islands within just one year. The departments for the development of electric motors and for production planning cooperated closely with the prototype manufacturing/ production technology centre in Győr to develop the required expertise. The current production capacity is for approximately 400 electric axle motors each day and can be gradually increased. At present, about 100 people are employed in this new area, to be increased to more than 130 by the end of the year. Production is with one‑shift operation, but will soon change to three shifts." "The electric motor from Győr offers numerous new features. With the stator – one of the core components of the motor – the aim is to insert as much of the thin enamelled copper wire as possible into the casing: the tighter the winding, the more efficient the power delivery. A new winding and inserting centre at Audi Hungaria makes it possible to wind the optimal amount of enamelled copper wire particularly compactly and then insert it into the casing. The electric axle consists of other large components such as the power electronics, which are located in their own housing, the gearing and two flange shafts that transmit the power to the wheels. The employees produce two electric axle drive systems for each Audi e-tron, as both the front and rear axles are driven – in good quattro tradition." https://www.volkswagenag.com/en/news/2018/07/Audi_Hungaria.html THREE MORE MODEL 3 PERFORMANCE REVIEWS CNET's Kyle Hyatt: "the moment you mash the accelerator a whole new sensation hits, and it's immediately apparent what you're getting for the (considerable) added price. based on these early impressions, the Performance seems to be exactly what we expected all along: an experience not dissimilar from the standard Model 3, just a heck of a lot quicker." MotorTrend: "Even with four aboard, the Model 3 DMP surged ahead so startlingly that it stopped conversation. Except maybe for an uttered "Oh my god." I braked pretty hard and arched up the on-ramp toward the freeway. It was a flourish more akin to swiping a navigation route on your phone than driving a car on the actual road. In maybe 120 wheel revolutions, a high-performance hierarchy has been rattled. The European marques perennially atop the sport sedan podium are about to have trapdoors release beneath them. Although nothing has fundamentally changed with the car's steering or suspension (besides an imperceptible but CG-lowering 5-10mm drop in ride height), the dual motor and all-wheel drive give the compact Tesla a tensed, hair-trigger potency for leaping ahead or around whatever's in the way. It's pure jungle cat." Mark Vaughn, West Coast Editor for Autoweek: "Controlling all that power on its way to the wheels is a new vehicle dynamic control (VDC) system. Tesla no longer uses Bosch VDC but has instead made its own. Tesla says this allows engineers to more precisely tune the distribution of torque front and rear as well as side-to-side. Acceleration is strong; thrilling, even. It’s still unclear whether you have to do that chemically ridiculous 30-minute pre-conditioning drill to get the 3.5-second 0-60 figure, but whatever figure I was experiencing was impressing the heck out of me." https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/auto/2018-tesla-model-3-performance/preview/ https://www.motortrend.com/cars/tesla/model-3/2018/2018-tesla-model-3-dual-motor-performance-review/ http://autoweek.com/article/car-reviews/first-drive-tesla-model-3-performance HYUNDAI KONA: GREAT LONG-RANGE, ALL-AROUND EV "The long anticipated Hyundai Kona EV, with a battery capacity up to 64 kWh, is now starting to arrive in the hands of customers and testers. It appears to be everything EV fans have hoped for, and more. If you want one, get your order in ASAP!" writes Max Holland for CleanTechnica: "Hyundai is only planning for 30,000 units per year in the near term. Most of the exports are currently going to Europe, and won’t be arriving in the US till later in 2018. Pricing for the long-range, 64 kWh version varies by market, but starts from around €34,000/US$40,000 equivalent in Norway (NKR 326,000), €39,000 in Germany, £36,000 in the UK, or €42,000 in France. US pricing will emerge towards the end of 2018. Incentives in some markets will effectively reduce these prices further. In Norway, at this price, the 64 kWh Kona is a similar cost to the Bolt/Ampera-e." Clean Technica say the charge speed is 80kW, and I thought it was 100kW. Checking the official Hyundai website says: "Charge Time / Quick Charge (DC) (connected to 100 kW DC fast charger). Approx. 54 min up to 80% state of charge" CHINESE LUXURY EV STARTUP GYON LAUNCHES NEXT MONTH IN L.A. "Another new Chinese electric car brand is on the way, called Gyon. Bankrolled by Sitech, itself an electric car brand under pioneering Chinese car manufacturer FAW, Gyon will launch during the summer. " KIA KX3 EV: CRETA-BASED ELECTRIC CAR SPOTTED "Images of the Kia KX3 EV have surfaced online. The Creta-based electric vehicle (EV) is rumoured to go on sale by the end of 2018 in China." according to Team BHP.com: "The KX3 in the all-electric guise is expected to be powered by an 109 BHP electric motor with a claimed top speed of 150 km/h. It gets a 45.2 KWh lithium-ion battery, however its maximum range is not yet known." https://www.team-bhp.com/news/kia-kx3-ev-creta-based-electric-car-spotted CARBONCOUNTER.COM MIT published a useful tool for comparing life cycle emissions (gCO2/mile) and TCO of different vehicle types. The plot area shows more than 100 popular new car models in the U.S. Move over each data point to get more information (on a touch device, tap). The x axis shows the lifetime cost of each vehicle per mile driven. The y axis shows the greenhouse gas emissions of each vehicle per mile driven. We include emissions from producing the different fuels and vehicles. Our results show that you don't have to pay more for a low-carbon-emitting vehicle. While the average greenhouse gas emissions of all cars are more than 50% higher than the 2030 target, most hybrid and electric vehicles meet that target today, with today's electricity mix. Greenhouse gas emissions from electricity production in California are half the U.S. average, and it shows. Emissions from electric vehicles drop below the 2040 climate target. Using a combination of low electricity emissions, high fuel prices, and a high share of city driving, we can construct a best case scenario for electric vehicles (EVs), where EVs are cheaper than comparable combustion engine vehicles. We can also do the opposite, choosing conditions that favour combustion engine cars. Even so, electric vehicles emit less than comparable combustion engine vehicles. Disabling the federal tax refunds and low fuel prices do make EVs quite pricey compared to gasoline cars though." Friday 6th April 2018. MASSIVE BATCH OF TESLA VINS REGISTERED We heard earlier in the week Tesla is making over 2,000 Model 3’s a week so it will come as no surprise they’ve registered almost 5,000 new VINs. At this rate it will last them about two weeks. It’s just a week after they registered 2,000 VINs so it looks like that exponential curve that Elon Musk talks about might be starting. A reminder that by Saturday, 30th June, they said they should be making 5,000 every week. Even if they maintained 5,000 a week for the second half of the year it would be 130,000 Model 3 vehicles in the second half of the year. And there’s every chance the curve will continue, as the target is 10,000 per week by year end. GROUPE PSA GET SERIOUS Peugeot, Citroën, DS and Opel/Vauxhall, and its Free2move all come under the Groupe PSA umbrella, and it’s creating a Business Unit dedicated to electric vehicles, effective 1 April, responsible for defining and deploying the Group’s electric vehicle strategy and rolling out the related products and services. Meanwhile CEO Carlos Tavares said European Union fines for companies that miss tougher CO2 reduction targets could bring a major European automaker "to its knees," allowing a Chinese buyer to step in with its own electric vehicle technology "The impact is very obvious. It's going to create a Chinese Trojan Horse in Europe," Tavares told an industry event hosted by French car magazine Le Journal de l'Auto. PSA and other European carmakers are facing declining sales of fuel-efficient diesel models, making it harder to meet CO2 targets and avoid large fines. UK DIESEL CRASH Here in the UK, a bad day for diesel and good one for electric cars. ThisIsMoney says: “diesel sales plummeting by more than a third in the industry's most important month of the year. Sales of diesel models, which have been subject to additional taxes in the last year, plunged by 37 per cent. Registrations of these 'cleaner' hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles rose by 5.7 per cent last month.” In March 2017 22,818 electric cars were sold which went up to 24,126 last month. That’s a total market share up from 4.1% to 5.1%. Year to date, which is basically looking at Q1 combined, shows an even better picture. In Q1 2017, 33,405 electric cars were sold and that went up to 36,693 this year, and increase of 9.8%. MORE CHINA INVESTMENT Electrek reports that: “Chinese EV start-up Singulato Motors said that it secured funding to invest $2.39 billion USD in a massive manufacturing hub in East China over the next five years.” The Singulato iS6 is their SUV which has a range of 400 km (~250 miles), 0-60mph of four seconds, and a price range starting at $32,000.
