In the episode Mike and Pete talk about the BMW E46, especially the E46 M3. Mike talks about his BMW i8 and how the Active Sound Design works on the outside of the hybrid supercar. With 357 horsepower the BMW i8 may seem under powered on paper but overall it's a pretty quick car. Mike also talks about burble tunes and the unique and identifiable exhaust sound of the iconic BMW S54 engine. At 3.2 liters the S54 put out 333hp and at the time was one of the first production engines to produce more than 100hp per liter in a normally aspirated engine.#autoish #autoishpodcast #mikeandpete #bmwe46m3 #bmwi8 #bmwm3
Show #671 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 19th January 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. New review from Mark in Vancouver: On my way to work I get my daily fix of EV news. Mostly cars, but I enjoy the few energy solar stories too as I have a 31 panel system. I have a Tesla Model 3, but what I like about this podcast is that he covers all EVs. I also have a gas honda accord (yuk) and will be getting a second EV in the next 3 years. Show is dynamic. I’ve listened since about 8 months ago, but recently went back and listed to the first 40 episodes. It is an EV time machine! Thanks Martin, so good. And remember, there is no such thing as a self-charging hybrid. Mark from Vancouver, Canada” BMW I8 PRODUCTION TO END IN APRIL "It was September last year when BMW released the Ultimate Sophisto limited edition models based on the i8 and i8 Roadster, effectively signaling the assembling of the hybrid sports car will come to an end very soon. We may now know when the 2+2 coupe will go out of production." says InsideEVs: "According to Autocar, BMW will kill the i8 in April this year nearly six years after it was launched. No exact date is confirmed at this point but a UK spokesman for the company told the publication that “UK customers interested in a built-to-order car will need to have placed their order with their local retailer by the end of February.” BMW’s director of development Klaus Frölich confirmed the Vision M Next Concept isn't going to be the successor of the i8. Back in July last year, he told Australian media that "there is no direct successor for the i3 and no direct successor for the i8." https://www.motor1.com/news/393129/bmw-i8-production-end-april/ SONO MOTORS HITS €50M-TARGET THROUGH CROWDFUNDING "Sono Motors has exceeded its crowdfunding target of 50 million euros and has extended the campaign until 20 January. The Munich-based company announced this on Saturday evening on Twitter – two days before the deadline." acccording to electrive today: "A key factor in the campaign’s success was the participation of existing investors, who gave Sono Motors a financing commitment of a further 10 million euros earlier this month. In the initial crowd-funding round, which was scheduled to run until 30 December 2019, Sono Motors had failed to meet the target of 50 million euros it had set itself. In the period since the beginning of December, however, just over 32.5 million euros had been raised – partly through new reservations including down payments, and partly by increasing existing down payments, donations or loans. Sono Motors has thus generated the difference to the 50-million-euro target within three weeks by extending the campaign. The proceeds will be used to finance tooling and further series prototypes of the Sion, the company’s debut solar electric car." https://www.electrive.com/2020/01/19/sono-motors-hits-e50m-target-through-crowdfunding/ RENAULT ZOE & TESLA MODEL 3 PULL FRANCE TO RECORD HEIGHTS A triple set of sales stories from Clean Technica, first up France: "The French plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) market registered a record 7,250 units in December, +28% year over year (YoY), a new all time record. That was thanks to leader Renault Zoe (2,097 units, a new year best), which seems to be past the worse of the production ramp up, and the Tesla Model 3, which moved 1,250 units, its best result ever in France. " https://cleantechnica.com/2020/01/17/renault-zoe-tesla-model-3-pull-france-to-record-heights-2019-ev-sales-report/ FOSSIL VEHICLE SALES IN GLOBAL FREEFALL "The world’s fossil fuel vehicle sales have continued to freefall in 2019, dropping by around 4.35 million, or some 4.7%, compared to 2018, accelerating a now inexorable trend. Global electric vehicle sales meanwhile have continued to rise, with 2019 EV market share reaching 4.7% in China and 3.8% in Europe. (Note that “electric vehicles” in this report concerns both fully electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids.)" https://cleantechnica.com/2020/01/18/fossil-vehicle-sales-in-global-freefall-down-4-7-in-2019-electric-vehicle-sales-continue-to-grow/ TESLA MODEL 3 = 7TH BEST SELLING CAR IN USA* "The Tesla Model 3 ended up being the 7th best selling car in the United States in the 4th quarter of 2019 and the 9th best selling car across the whole year*. (Note that the numbers and rankings in this article are only for cars, not SUVs or light-duty trucks.) The Model 3 was actually the #1 best selling car in the country in December, based on our estimates as well as official figures from automakers, but Tesla has an unbalanced delivery process in which the bulk of US deliveries are made at the end of the quarter, so I don’t think it’s appropriate to compare or highlight December sales." Camry, Corolla, Civic, Accord, Elantra, Altima and Model 3 https://cleantechnica.com/2020/01/19/tesla-model-3-7th-best-selling-car-in-usa/ NEW JERSEY PASSES LANDMARK EV LEGISLATION INCLUDING $5,000 REBATE "On January 17, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy signed into law sweeping legislation that has the potential to dramatically accelerate the sale of electric vehicles within the state. New Jersey residents will now get up to $5,000 off the purchase of an electric vehicle, the most aggressive state EV incentive in the nation. New Jersey currently has a sales-tax exemption for BEVs, and that policy will remain. " says InsideEVs: "he amount of rebate is based on the electric range of the vehicle, with a $25.00 credit given for every mile of electric range the car is rated at. Plug-in hybrids are eligible for the same rebate, however only for the next 3 three years." https://insideevs.com/news/393646/new-jersey-passes-landmark-ev-legislation/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK From E: The traditional OEM that I am most concerned about is Honda. Reason is because I work at Honda and our President Mr. Hachigo keeps talking about how there is no demand for EVs and how Honda is sticking to Hybrids. I don't just work at Honda. I grew up a fan of Honda. My favorite F1 driver was Aerton Senna and he drove for McLaren Honda, so I was actually a fan growing up. I always admired Mr. Honda's principles such as "Blue Skies for Our Children", "Be a company that society wants to exist", and I believe that Mr. Honda would have been very disappointed that his company is not the one leading the charge towards Carbon Free Society. I personally feel that we could be one of the Nokias of the automotive world and that we have to realize that speed is absolutely critical in order to stay relevant going forward. Josh and Brenna, Space Coast EV Drivers After renting a Subaru Outback on a vacation my wife and I agreed it would make a perfect EV. We think Subaru should be making an EV version of every car they make. Dan Herscher I would like to see Subaru doing more. They've crafted an image of being for outdoorsy people. You know the kind who care about clean air, water, and climate. They've even made a big deal about some zero waste factories. So a clean, green, EV seems to fit into their desired public perception. If Love truly made a Subaru a Subaru I wish they'd show a bit more love for the planet by ditching the fossils. Sadly I've seen very little from them to date. Stephen Murdoch I want to see (or demand if I could) General Motors make more BEV's as GMHolden is an iconic part of Australian motoring. Or even releasing the Chevy Bolt down under would be a step in the right direction. Steve James I would like to see Dacia hit the EV market because they would obviously make a cheap EV which would mean it would make the other car companies look at there pricing structures. SuperFrikky Car maker to make greater EV strides....Ford. EV Fiesta can't be far away surely NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week… With increasing attacks on EVs and vandalism caught on camera, why do some people have a problem with EVs?
Jon Gives Us the Latest on the M3. Porsche is ready with the "Tesla Killer". the Taycan. Will it live up to the hype or will its value will tank in 3 years like the BMW i8? Finally, we end with the final scene in Jon's BMW shop drama.
Show #428. Can You Help Me Fight The Fossils? Read More About Patreon here EVne.ws/patreon Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 28th March 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today, and picked out the best ones to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. A developing story today in the UK. You know I talk about the carrot and the stick, in terms of what is needed to persuade people into EVs? We have the carrot here in the UK with £3500 off a new EV, but I also talk about the success of Norway using the stick. Hitting people with penalties to buy fossil cars. Now today in the UK there's a story about putting up tax on petrol to push people into considering alternatives. More tomorrow. DAIMLER, GEELY CREATE 50:50 JOINT VENTURE TO DEVELOP SMART The Daimler-owned Smart brand is something which hasn't been a huge commercial success and yet they've kept investing in it, and more recently, electrifying it. Most famous for making small cars it is being given a new lease of life. "Daimler is willing to give the brand another shot by teaming up with Lotus and Volvo owner Geely to transform Smart into a pure EV brand. Announced today, the deal involving Daimler and Geely represents a 50:50 joint venture in China where a new factory will be built to handle production of zero-emissions models." Says Adrian Padeanu for Motor1.com today: "These future cars will be styled by Mercedes and engineered by Geely, with the first models scheduled to hit the market globally from 2022. Interestingly, aside from ditching combustion engines altogether, the Smart brand will expand into the B-segment, which means the next decade will bring us subcompact cars from a brand exclusively known for its cutesy A-segment cars." Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars, said: “For more than 2.2 million customers, smart represents a pioneer in urban mobility. Based on this success story, we look forward to further enhancing the brand with Geely Holding, a strong partner in the electric vehicle segment. We will jointly design and develop the next generation of smart electric cars that combine high-quality production and known safety standards for sale both in China and globally." https://www.motor1.com/news/315724/daimler-geely-joint-venture-smart/ BMW WILL BUILD MINI ELECTRIC IN UK DESPITE BREXIT CONCERNS "Despite a number of carmakers saying that they’ll pull out of Britain when Brexit eventually happens BMW is pushing ahead with plans to produce the all-electric Mini over here. According to Automotive News Europe, BMW isn’t planning to implement any major changes to any of its plans in the UK – including the Oxford factory which is earmarked for electric Mini assembly." reports InsideEVs.com today: "The manufacturer is anticipating zero to five percent tariffs on goods if Britain leaves the EU without a deal, something that “won’t change Mini’s business model”. However, BMW’s chief executive officer Harald Krueger has warned that BMW could still move production to countries like the Netherlands at some point in the future should problems arise further down the line. The first electric Mini has been slated to begin production this year, and will become available worldwide, including the US where there is a possibility the brand could become electric-only in the coming years in a bid to boost sales." https://insideevs.com/bmw-build-mini-electric-uk/ SMOKING BMW I8 DUMPED IN WATER BY FIREFIGHTERS A tweet from the Fire Department in the Netherlands: "This morning an electric car started to smoke in a showroom. The employees of the garage and the fire brigade acted quickly to drive the car outside. Because it is an electric car, inventive action was necessary. The car is immersed in a container of water because extinguishing it in the 'normal' way is difficult with these cars. The car will remain in the water basin for the next 24 hours." Chris Bruce at Motor1 raises a good point though: "What's not clear is whether this is the fire department's usual reaction to an electrified vehicle fire. Traveling with a crane and giant water tank doesn't seem very convenient. Plus, if the BMW were already in flames, picking it up and placing the coupe into container doesn't seem safe. What's not clear is whether this is the fire department's usual reaction to an electrified vehicle fire. Traveling with a crane and giant water tank doesn't seem very convenient. Plus, if the BMW were already in flames, picking it up and placing the coupe into container doesn't seem safe." https://www.motor1.com/news/315476/bmw-i8-fire-reponse-netherlands/ NEXT CHALLENGE FOR VW ID-R The fully-electric Volkswagen ID. R will take on another special challenge in September 2019. Romain Dumas (F) will be back at the wheel of the 500-kW electric sports car for the “China Challenge” on the Tianmen Shan Big Gate Road – a unique stretch of tarmac, featuring 99 corners, which winds its way up Tianmen Mountain, located roughly 1,500 kilometres southwest of Beijing. As no official record exists for the eleven-kilometre mountain road, which is not accessible to public transport, Volkswagen China will run a competition prior to the record attempt, in which participants can set their own virtual time on the Tianmen Shan Big Gate Road. Dumas will then attempt to better the time of the fastest participant under real conditions in September. The Volkswagen ID. R, with which Romain Dumas set records at two famous hill climbs in June 2018 – first at the “Pikes Peak International Hill Climb” and then at the “Goodwood Festival of Speed” – is powered by two electric engines generating a total output of 500 kW (680 PS) and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.25 seconds. Before travelling to China in September, Dumas and the record-breaking ID. R will first set their sights on a new lap record for electric cars on the famous Nürburgring-Nordschleife. FIRST MERCEDES-BENZ ECITARO STARTS SERVICE IN BERLIN "Berlin Transport Authority (BVG) has received the first out of 15 ordered all-electric Mercedes-Benz eCitaro buses." reports InsideEVs.com: "The other thing is that Mercedes-Benz eCitaro currently is equipped with batteries of 243 kWh, which is enough only for 150 km (93 miles)." It's good news, but here's the context: Last autumn, BVG placed an order for up to 950 low-emission Mercedes‑Benz Citaro buses. It is the largest single order ever for Europe’s best-selling city bus. At almost the same time, BVG also ordered 15 fully-electric eCitaro buses. https://insideevs.com/mercedes-benz-ecitaro-berlin/ TESLA'S MUSK POKES FUN AT RAM TRUCKS 'PUNY' TOWING ABILITY Dodge Ram Owner @RamLover69 You would still be physically fatigued if you tried to haul 12,000 lbs of steel beams like I do every day with my Dodge Ram, 2019s motor trend truck of the year. @elonmusk 12,000 lbs!? How puny. Do you construct children’s toys? SEAT ELECTRIC STRATEGY INCLUDSE SIX ELECTRIC The electric version of the Mii and el-Born will be the brand’s first two fully electric models, while the new generation Leon and the Tarraco will feature a plug-in hybrid version. Furthermore, the CUPRA Leon and the CUPRA Formentor will also have a plug-in hybrid variant. SEAT President Luca de Meo also announced today at the company’s annual media conference that the CUPRA Formentor, the new CUV that was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show, will be built at the Martorell factory. For the first time in the history of the company, SEAT will develop a new vehicle platform in collaboration with the Volkswagen brand, a smaller version of the Modular Electric Drive Toolkit (MEB) on which multiple vehicles of the size of around four metres in length by different brands, SEAT among them, will be made. The goal of the new platform is to develop affordable electric vehicles, with an entry level price below 20,000 euros. More than 300 highly skilled engineers will be participating in this project in Spain. https://www.seat-mediacenter.com/newspage/allnews/company/2019/SEAT-will-launch-six-electric-and-plug-in-hybrid-models-and-develop-a-new-platform-in-Spain-for-electric-vehicles.html GAC AION S IS EQUIPPED WITH 58.8 KWH CATL NCM 811 BATTERY "The GAC New Energy Automobile Co., Ltd. (GAC NE), the newest arm of GAC, recently announced specifications for the upcoming Aion S all-electric sedan, scheduled for market launch in China in May 2019." reports Mark Kane for InsideEVs.com: "The car, which was by GAC compared to the Tesla Model 3, is equipped with the latest NCM 811 battery cells supplied by CATL. The total capacity is 58.8 kWh, which should be enough for 510 km (317 miles) under NEDC. The latest report from Automotive News Europe suggests the latter, this time between Renault and Nissan that would eventually include Fiat Chrysler Automobiles as well. The information comes from a report in Financial Times (subscription required) that cites anonymous sources allegedly in the know about the deal on both sides of the fence." according to Motor1.com: "During the tenure of FCA’s former boss Sergio Marchionne, there were more than a few rumors regarding mergers and purchases, primarily with Chinese automakers. This new report speaks of a freshly merged Renault-Nissan company seeking to acquire FCA as well, ultimately creating a large corporation with enough clout to compete with the likes of Toyota and Volkswagen. In this scenario from Finacial Times, a Renault-Nissan alliance would go after FCA within 12 months" https://www.motor1.com/news/315686/renault-seeks-merger-nissan-fca/ And finally thanks to Fredrik who sent me a link to a site which tracks the VIN numbers and registrations in Norway... As modern technologies are making cars better, car manufactures are making sure to have every vehicle on the lineup upgraded. This even goes into the crossove SUV, which is now getting sportier and increased HP ratings. These new crossover SUV's provide the utility of an SUV while at the same time adding sportier features and engine upgrades. If you haven't already follow us on Instagram @BranAutoPodcast and thanks for listening!
What's better than a three-comma-door supercar? A three-comma-door supercar without a roof - at least according to Sami, who spent a week with the 2019 BMW i8 Roadster, perhaps the most unique hybrid electric in BMW's line-up. Benjamin also waxes philosophical on the value of factory 'tuner' cars like the 2018 Subaru BRZ tS, a fun-to-drive coupe that may or may not be worth paying the upgrade fee for the handful of STI parts that come with it. Also, Datsun carnage after Benjamin's most recent track day.
This week joining Mandy Turner is Alborz Fallah and Curt Dupriez, live from our Editorial off-site in Torquay, Victoria. Find out how the team went with a blindfolded motorkhana challenge in the Mazda MX-5 RF! Scott Collie and James Wong talk car news, that includes the European Parliament that has voted to cut emissions by 40% by 2030, and Peugeot's E-Legend Concept could become a reality. Plus, the Australian launch for the Porsche Taycan has been confirmed for 2020, and the 2020 Jeep Renegade plug-in hybrid has been confirmed. Curt chats about driving the Volkswagen Arteon World Time Attack, and Tony Crawford discusses his drive in the 2019 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon. Paul Maric talks about his experience of driving the Swiss Alps with Joe Achilles in a BMW i8 Roadster and Audi R8 V10 Plus Spyder. We help Georgina on The Shortlist who is after a $15,000 car for her 18-year old daughter that is capable of long drives and dirt roads.
This week we have Kevin Bavelaar from Auto Showplace joing us again to talk about warranties. We go through the different types of warranty coverage and discuss whether or not it is worth it to consider an extended warranty. We talk about what to watch out for when considering an extended warranty, including shopping companies, researching the different types of coverage, and what are your obligations to maintain the coverage. Finally, we share our thoughts on the new vehicle test drive of the week, the 2019 BMW i8 Roadster.
Tuesday 1st May 2018. FIRST DRIVE: BMW i8 ROADSTER Both of BMW i Series cars are unique in terms of having nothing obvious to compare them to. And when I say both maybe I should say three – as the BMW i3S is not a thing, being lower, wider and with a bit more squirty. And if I’m going that, we should four models, because the BMW Roadster in i8 form is an updated car with a missing roof, for full wind-in-you-hair / bald patch driving. As first seen at the LA Motor Show in 2017 we now know what it’s like behind the wheel. It’s interesting when a slew of articles all drop into my Google Alerts inbox at the same time, it normally means a car maker has had an embargo on magazines running their reviews before a certain date. And so it was yesterday with the i8 Roaster. So let’s take a look my three favourite reviews I’ve read, and picked out the highlights for you: BMW BLOG: “The three-cylinder, 1.5-liter turbocharged petrol engine is untouched, mated to an electric motor and six-speed automatic gearbox, powering the rear wheels. While an electric motor powers the front wheels, thus giving it real-time torque-vectoring all-wheel drive. The capacity of the lithium-ion battery has been increased, now at 34 ampere-hours instead of 20, and gross energy capacity now 11.6 kWh, up from 7.1. This permits an increased electric-only driving range up from 20 to 33 miles.” AutoExpress: “In the four years since BMW launched its i8 Coupe, the company has sold 13,000 examples of the carbon-tub, petrol-electric hybrid. That improved battery range is instantly noticeable, too. Whereas in the original Coupe the electric motor could be easily side-lined by the turbocharged petrol engine, now the electrified elements of the powertrain are far more willing and able to take on longer and quicker driving duties” EVO: “Away from the battery cell improvements, the big technological change to the i8 Roadster is the one made to the car’s structure in turning it from a coupe to a convertible. With the roof down the electric motors that is all but mute in the coupe gains a voice – admittedly a bit of a whiny voice, but if you’re a sci-fi fan you’ll probably think you’re an extra in Tron as the sound intensifies as speeds increase. If you’ve ever been to a Formula E race (honestly, give one a go) it’s not far off the noise the single-seaters make when accelerating out of slower corners. Talking of which, another benefit of the larger-capacity battery cells is that the i8 Roadster will now happily drive along under electric power alone at speeds up to 75mph.” So there you have it. Want one? That will be £125,000 please. I won’t do the conversion to US$ because I always mess up the taxes and VAT. But you get the idea, you need to be making bank to pop down BMW and buy one. You could have a Jag F-Type for seven grand less, or a Mercedes-AMG GT Roadster for a mere £111,000, but why be cheap. Go big and get a proper fast EV hybrid. http://www.bmwblog.com/2018/04/29/first-drive-bmw-i8-roadster-its-all-about-the-journey/ http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/bmw/i8/103352/new-2018-bmw-i8-roadster-review http://www.evo.co.uk/bmw/bmw-i8-roadster/21184/bmw-i8-roadster-review-new-open-top-hybrid-sports-car TESLA MODEL 3 ACCELERATION SHOWCASED IN HIGH-SPEED AUTOBAHN SPRINT “A Tesla enthusiast from Germany has taken the Model 3 to the Autobahn to observe the acceleration and high-speed performance of the compact electric car" report Teslarati. The top speed reached was 130mph and of course done legally as you can on certain stretches of the German roads. It was Tesla Marcus who live streamed it over the weekend. He observed the acceleration was not quite on par with Model S. But hey, neither is the price! I'll put a link to the Teslarati article in the show notes as it's only fair to send traffic to them but they link through to the video. https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-3-acceleration-high-speed-autobahn/ SF MOTORS BRINGING NEW ELECTRIC VEHICLE R&D FACILITY TO SILICON VALLEY There’s nothing better than seeing announcements turn into reality, and new companies making a go of the thing Elon says nobody should ever try – launch a new automotive company. One of those is SF Motors and today they announced the opening of a new R&D facility in McCarthy Creekside, California. Do any of our California listeners know it? The company currently has R&D facilities in Santa Clara, Calif.; Ann Arbor, Mich.; and Stuttgart, Germany. The company CTO, Yifan Tang, will oversee R&D and low volume manufacturing at the 130,000 sq/ft facility. “Adding to our existing R&D labs, this new facility will conduct extensive design validation testing and low-volume manufacturing necessary to ensure smooth transition to mass production of our batteries and electric powertrains, which are key components of our vehicles,” says Tang. “Drawing on our global business model and decades of manufacturing experience, locating this facility near our Silicon Valley headquarters will strategically ensure quality and efficiency as we prepare to bring our intelligent EVs to market.” A reminder they’re targeting 200,000 units per year but I don’t know when, in context, the established Model S and Model X lines will do around 60,000 units each per year, and obviously dwarfed by Model 3. https://ngtnews.com/sf-motors-bringing-new-electric-vehicle-rd-facility-to-silicon-valley UK INSTAVOLT CHARGING NETWORK FREE IN MAY In the UK electric vehicle (EV) charging company InstaVolt is making its rapid charging stations completely free to use for the entire month of May as a celebration of the company’s 100th charger going live. InstaVolt’s charging stations are available to use on a pay-as-you-go basis, with no subscription or membership required. Drivers simply tap their contactless credit or debit card, charge up and go. There’s no minimum spend and no connection fee. This month, start your charge as normal by tapping a card, but you won’t be billed. And it’s unlimited. “The UK needs a solid public charging infrastructure and we’re working at a rate of knots to make that a reality” said InstaVolt CEO Tim Payne. “We’re switching on new rapid charging stations every week and we’re thrilled to have hit this important milestone of 100. It’s our pleasure to share that celebration with EV drivers across the UK and offer them free charging throughout the month of May.” PSA'S DS BRAND WILL ELECTRIFY THE PREMIUM SECTOR PSA Group's premium DS brand said that all its new models from 2025 will have only full-electric or hybrid drivetrains, and that it will present its first battery electric vehicle at the Paris auto show in October. “Our ambition is very clear: For DS to be among the global leaders in electrified cars in its market," DS CEO Yves Bonnefont said in a press release yesterday. " PSA will offer 40 electrified models across its five brands -- Peugeot, Citroen, Opel, Vauxhall and DS -- worldwide by 2025, CEO Carlos Tavares told the Automotive News World Congressat the start of this year. I’ve added a link to that press release on the show notes. Another big announcement, and time for another reality check, 7 years is a lifetime away. 7 years ago the world was totally different, and 7 years before than in 2004, there was no such thing as YouTube or Twitter, and Mark Zuckerberg was in his dorm room at Harvard writing code for The FaceMash, the website that as a precursor to TheFacebook. So yes, 2025 is a long way off. http://int-media.dsautomobiles.com/en/all-future-ds-models-will-be-exclusively-electrified-versions U.S. DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY ANNOUNCES $19 MILLION FOR ADVANCED BATTERY AND ELECTRIFICATION RESEARCH Today, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced $19 million to support twelve new cost-shared research projects focused on batteries and vehicle electrification technologies to enable extreme fast charging. The projects announced today will help advance DOE’s research on batteries and electrification aimed at reducing battery pack cost to under $100 per kilowatt-hour, increasing range to over 300 miles, and charging in under 15 minutes or less by 2028. All investment is welcome, who wouldn’t love $19m, but split between 12 projects? We'll hear tomorrow how much Tesla lost in Q1, if it's in the ball park of USD$700m it would seem OK, so if you want to see what's really at the sharp end of battery R&D, you might need to spend a bit more. https://www.energy.gov/articles/department-energy-announces-19-million-advanced-battery-and-electrification-research-enable MERCEDES-BENZ KILLS ITS ‘TESLA POWERWALL KILLER’ That's a great headline from Electrek. And it's sadly true, whenever anyone launches a product up against Tesla, whether it's in the car or energy space, the headline writers will call it a Tesla killer. I did it without realising a couple of months back talking about the Mercedes S-Class electric equivalent, the EQS. And so often other companies look at Tesla, and say anything you can do, we can do better. Except, they can’t. Mercedes Benz had their own version of the Tesla Powerwall, selling solar and battery packages alongside Vivent. But GreenTechMedia got a statement saying: "It’s not necessary to have a car battery at home: they don’t move, they don’t freeze. It’s overdesigned." Maybe that's true, but it was also woeful compared to the Powerwall. The Merc modular system was 2.5kWh at the smallest capacity, starting at $5,000. It was too much compared to the dollar cost per kWh of Tesla. https://electrek.co/2018/04/30/mercedes-benz-kills-tesla-powerwall-killer-energy-storage-device/ BLOCKCHAIN COULD REVOLUTIONISE EV CHARGING Question: do you understand Blockchain? Properly understand it? No me neither. "Using blockchain technology, peer-to-peer networks have established marketplaces to connect EV drivers so they can share charging stations with each other" says EnergyFuse: "Residential and commercial EV owners can make a profit by allowing others to access their chargers, and drivers have the flexibility to charge their vehicles at different locations. Companies in banking, finance, insurance, oil trading, and utilities have been moving to blockchains—decentralized distributed ledgers that record online transactions—to improve efficiencies" “It’s Airbnb for EV charging,” Preston Roper, COO of eMotorWerks, told The Fuse. eMotorWerks, a California-based firm that focuses on EV charging technologies, was the first company in the United States to establish a peer-to-peer network in its partnership with Share&Charge. I get how that works, but I still don't get how the blockchain makes this possible. Do I sounds like those people who first saw the internet in the 90s and said 'what IS it'? http://energyfuse.org/blockchain-electric-vehicle-charging/ I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. How different is the new 2019 Audi A7 from the model it replaces? How strong does it stand next to the growing class of four-door luxury coupes that it once ruled? Sami has the scoop after driving the A7 for two days on the dusty streets of Johannesburg. Benjamin counters the South African sun with a week spent on snow and ince in the BMW i8, a hybrid that is surprisingly competent when the temperature drops, and a supercar that doesn't seem to mind plowing through the white stuff. Also, Sami fades in and out of consciousness throughout the episode, which was recorded a mere hour after he deplaned from a solid day spent traveling.
