Mercedes-Benz South Africa (MBSA) will roll out 127 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across the country in a R40-million investment. As demand for EVs continues to grow, "ensuring robust infrastructure" for these vehicles is essential, says the local arm of the German car maker. MBSA is collaborating with Chargify, a Level 2 empowered company. The roll-out will include AC and fast-charging DC charging stations along the country's main routes and between metropolitan areas, as well as at airports, shopping malls, restaurant hubs, private hospitals, strategic expansion sites, residential estates and small towns throughout South Africa. "The partnership with Chargify not only gives us the opportunity to grow…the local EV charging network, but also reaffirms MBSA's ambition to expand its enterprise and supplier development (ESD) portfolio," says MBSA human resources and corporate affairs executive director Abey Kgotle. "Our ESD programme is aimed at making a real and lasting impact towards the transformation of the country through the creation of sustainable and meaningful jobs." This investment is also aimed at providing current customers with a reliable charging network, and instilling confidence in those considering the switch to EV ownership. MBSA's initial investment in the EQ charging network amounts to R15-million, with an additional R25-million earmarked for the second phase of the rollout. Phase 1 involves the installation of 67 Mercedes-Benz EQ branded charging stations across South Africa by the first quarter of next year. Phase 2 will add 60 additional charging stations, bringing the total to 127 EQ-branded charging stations. Locations already featuring the charging infrastructure include BT Ngebs Mall and Mayfair Hotel in Mthatha; Woodhill Estate and Country Club; Da Vinci Hotel in Sandton; Champagne Castle in the Drakensberg; Highwaymans in Pilgrims Rest; the Courtyard Sandton, and the Silvermist Wine Estate. Other locations currently in the installation phase include the Plettenberg Hotel; Wilderness Hotel; Swartberg Hotel, in Prince Albert; and Karoo Junction Mall in Beaufort West. While EQ customers can charge at any charge point in the country, they will benefit from a 10% discount when charging via the Chargify network. "Mercedes-Benz South Africa is accelerating the pace of eMobility transformation within the automotive industry," says MBSA co-CEO and Mercedes-Benz Cars executive director Mark Raine. "Next to offering the most extensive and diverse all-EV portfolio in the market, we want to provide not only our customers, but all EV drivers the luxury and peace of mind of a comprehensive charging network."

Mercedes-Benz South Africa (MBSA) has unveiled the second of its local dealerships to have adopted the German car maker's new 'luxury' retail brand appearance, launched globally in 2018, and in South Africa in 2019. This first dealership to carry the identity was in Sandton. However, the domestic roll-out of the new identity was halted by Covid-19, but has now again gained momentum. The Mercedes-Benz Constantiaberg dealership in Cape Town is owned by Super Group, which has invested R40-million in the facility. The central theme for the new-look dealerships is the feeling of luxury in every consumer interaction and/or every touch point. It also merges the physical and online channels to create more convenience, such as through the digitalisation of the entire customer journey when engaging with the dealership. In addition, the Constantiaberg facility fully caters for the shift towards electric mobility, both in equipment specifications and staff training. "With the ever-changing consumer landscape, future-proofing our operations to meet the needs of our customers is crucial," says MBSA co-CEO and Mercedes-Benz Cars executive director Mark Raine. "As a luxury brand, modernising our retail operations is about focusing on our customers' growing needs, with the goal to create a fascinating brand experience at every touch point. "This dealership serves as a testament to our vision for the future of luxury where convenience, personalised services and unforgettable experience converge." Construction work of Mercedes-Benz Constantiaberg dealership started in September last year and was completed in June. The facility occupies an area of around 7 400 m², and forms part of the Blue Route Mall property. The building structure has been designed to accommodate the future installation of solar energy. "Our relocation from Claremont to Tokai is a strategic move to further strengthen existing relationships and build new ones," says Super Group Dealerships CEO Graeme Watson. He says the next step for the group in its relationship with MBSA is to roll out a premium outlet at the V&A Waterfront in the fourth quarter of this year.

Mercedes-Benz South Africa (MBSA) has set a target for electric vehicles (EVs) to be 50% of its sales in the domestic market by 2026, says Mercedes-Benz Cars co-CEO and MBSA executive director Mark Raine. He acknowledges this to be a rather bullish sentiment in a market that sold a total of 218 EVs in 2021, but believes it is indeed possible. “I think the South African market is ideally suited for the premium segment to become electric,” Raine tells Engineering News Online. “Yes, Eskom may have continued difficulty in meeting demand, but premium car clients are either already off the grid, or they are thinking about it.” These buyers also typically have households with two to three cars, which means they are not reliant on only one vehicle, and can ‘risk' buying an EV. In addition to this, premium segment buyers are often first movers when new technology becomes available. “Also, from an economic point of view, it makes sense to go electric,” says Raine. “If you are travelling between Pretoria and Johannesburg, for example, you can save between R4 000 to R6 000 a month on fuel.” Raine says rapidly rising fuel prices are playing into the EV sector's hands. “Yes, our customers may be top earners, but even for them numbers like these make the decision to get into an EV much easier.” The EQ Range MBSA unveiled the EQ EV brand in South Africa in January. The local arm of the Germany luxury car maker initially said it would launch the EQ range in the second quarter of the year. However, this date was pushed to the third quarter owing to the war in the Ukraine and its effect on EV availability in particular. This means the EQ range will now make its debut at the Festival of Motoring in Gauteng in August. “Up to now we have not released any EQ vehicles to local customers,” says Raine. August will see the introduction of the EQA, EQB, EQC and EQS models, with the EQE to be launched towards the end of the year. The last letter of each model's nomenclature reflects its ‘match' in Mercedes-Benz's internal combustion engine (ICE) catalogue – A (A-Class), and so forth. “We want to launch the EQ vehicles all together in order for customers to come to showrooms and see the difference in the various vehicles,” explains Raine. “We want to give them the opportunity to make an educated choice on the vehicle best suited to their needs.” Next year will see the introduction of some sports-utility vehicle versions of the vehicles launched this year. By the end of 2023, MBSA should have seven EQ models available in South Africa, says Raine. The EQA will offer MBSA's entry into the EQ range, with pricing to start at just over R1.1-million. That 25% Import Duty . . . “There are three things we need to get right as a brand and as a country when it comes to EVs,” says Raine. The first is to tackle the price disparity that exists through the different import duties levied on ICE vehicles and EVs, followed by the need for sufficient charging infrastructure countrywide. It is also a necessity that South Africa takes a holistic view of the EV ecosystem, with a focus on having all the supporting infrastructure and people in place, such as training first responders on how to deal with EVs on accident scenes. Price parity is a key determining factor in making EVs successful in South Africa, notes Raine. EVs are currently subject to a 25% import duty, and ICE vehicles to a 18% duty. “For me, looking at it from a global perspective and looking at the local market, it makes no sense to put EVs at a disadvantage,” says Raine. “I don't support EV subsidies in South Africa, considering the economic and political conditions in the country. This also doesn't make sense as EVs are currently coming in in the premium segment. “But, putting EVs at a disadvantage puts South African consumers, the South African market, and South Africa as a country on the backfoot versus the global market. “We need price parity. We need like-for-like.” Government is still to release its ne...
Mercedes-Benz South Africa (MBSA) will dispose of the passenger car business of its Gauteng West own-retail operations, as well as a portion of its commercial vehicle business, held in Sandown Motor Holdings (SMH), to the Motus Group. The value of the deal is not disclosed. SMH is a wholly-owned subsidiary of MBSA. The proposed disposal of SMH forms part of MBSA's implementation of Project Focus, which resulted in the earlier spin-off of Daimler Truck from the Mercedes-Benz car business on a global level. The rationale for the spin-off was to enable Mercedes-Benz and Daimler Truck greater entrepreneurial flexibility and agility, the independence to focus on its strategic direction in respect to electric mobility transformation, improved customer centricity and the opportunity to unlock their full potential. “MBSA's proposed sale of SMH is the next logical step in the growth of our company,” says Mercedes-Benz Cars and MBSA executive director Mark Raine. “A simplified corporate structure will enable MBSA to focus on the next phase of the company's growth premised on customer centricity, and the . . . Mercedes-Benz, Mercedes-AMG, Mercedes-Maybach and Mercedes-EQ brands.” The proposed disposal will include the following dealerships: Mercedes-Benz Sandton, Mercedes-Benz Constantia Kloof, Mercedes-Benz Bryanston and a single commercial vehicle dealership in Roodepoort.

ELON MUSK DUMPS $8.5B IN TESLA STOCK AHEAD OF TWITTER BUY - Elon Musk has sold off a whopping $8.5 billion in Tesla stock this week as he prepares to acquire Twitter for $44 billion – but he insists that the rest of his stake in the electric car maker will remain untouched for now. - Securities filings revealed Friday that Musk sold 5.2 million Tesla shares via open-market transactions that occurred on Thursday. That brings the total to 9.6 million shares after earlier disclosures detailed earlier stock sales worth $4 billion on Tuesday and Wednesday. - The stock sales in total amounted to 5% of his stake in Tesla - Musk still owns nearly 16% of Tesla shares, according to FactSet data cited by the Wall Street Journal. Original Source : https://nypost.com/2022/04/29/elon-musk-dumps-8-5b-in-tesla-stock-ahead-of-twitter-buy/ ANNUAL MEETING: MERCEDES-BENZ CONTINUES ITS SUCCESSFUL TRANSFORMATION - Focusing on electric vehicles and growing the top-end segment at Mercedes-Benz has paid off. Four figures illustrate this transformation: Group sales of the top-end models increased by 30%, sales of electric passenger cars increased by 64%, sales of electric Vans 118% and adjusted EBIT of the Mercedes-Benz Group grew by 123%. - This year the company expects to make further progress toward its long-term strategic goal of CO2 neutrality. With the EQS SUV, EQE SUV, EQT and eCitan models more than 10 fully electric vehicles will have been presented by the end of 2022. Moreover, with the Ambition2039, Mercedes-Benz Cars has set itself the target of reaching an important milestone as early as 2030 on the road to CO2 neutrality: to halve CO2 emissions compared with 2020 levels. Here, the most important levers are electrifying the vehicle fleet, charging with green power, improving battery technology and by extensively using recycled materials and renewable energy in production sites. Potential CO2 emissions are also evaluated as a criterion when contracts are awarded to potential suppliers. - Mercedes-Benz plans to cover more than 70% of its energy requirements in production with renewable energy sources by 2030. The manufacturer began replacing the battery packs of all affected vehicles from the 2017 through 2022 model years, and it looks like it's prioritizing older cars first. - Chevrolet has already replaced the battery pack in 62 percent of affected Bolts built under the 2017 through 2019 model years. Chevy says that last quarter it changed 26,952 battery packs. - Another document issued for 2021 through 2022 model year affected Chevy Bolts shows that these newer cars haven't received new batteries yet - just 701 swaps were performed out of a total 52,414 pool of affected vehicles. - Owners of Bolt EVs equipped with the new battery are also reporting a range increase with the fresh pack. When our own Tom Moloughney took part in a range test of a Bolt with a newly replaced battery, he found that post swap it was able to travel for around 13.5 percent longer than before. Lockdowns in China have worsened the visibility of semiconductors and the logistics have become the next challenge for Tata Motors given the lack of availability of containers, he said. - The impact of the chip shortage is more “acute” in electric vehicles than gasoline models, Chandra said. The waiting period for electric vehicles at Tata Motors could be as much as six months, compared with four months for cars with internal combustion engines, he said. - Tata's foray into semiconductor making will also help its group firm, Tata Motors, which makes the iconic Jaguar Land Rover brands and has suffered due to these shortages. - also announced plans to launch its first-ever pure electric car by 2025. The five-seater Avinya will have no gasoline variants, Chandra told reporters in a briefing on Friday. - Tata Motors currently sells two battery-powered models, the Nexon EV and Tigor EV, but these cars also have variants that run on fossil fuels.
The pandemic has brought communicators a variety of challenges, greater pressure and visibility and a renewed sense of value. It also required reorganization and rethinking of both delivery and process. Just think of all in person meetings that had to move online, from team events to press conferences and autoshows. For this final episode, we're coming home, to Germany, to chat with Katja Bott. She's learning the Global Communications team of Mercedes-Benz Cars & Vans since October 2018 having worked with the company for more than 17 years in Germany and the US.

In addition to the Standard Range model, Tesla also rolled out the SUV's seven-seat option for those in need of a third row." says CNET: "Crucially, the Model Y Standard Range drops the entry price for the electric SUV to $41,990 before other taxes and fees to become the least expensive Model Y on sale right now. It's still more expensive than the Model 3, however, which starts at $37,790." "With an EPA-estimated 244 miles of range, the lowest driving range of any Tesla available, despite CEO Elon Musk tweeting in July that the model was dropped because of its sub-250-mile range." reports Car and Driver: "The Model Y is offered in two other versions: Long Range (EPA-estimated 326-mile range) and Performance (303-mile range), both dual-motor models with all-wheel drive. The newly introduced Standard Range model is rear-wheel drive. $41,990 Single-motor rear-wheel-drive 5.3-second zero-to-60-mph Top speed of 135 mph Estimated delivery timing for the Model Y Standard Range is currently at 2-5 weeks. Looking for some opinion/reaction, electrek said: "Tesla’s new 244-mile range Model Y was previously called “unacceptable” by Elon Musk, but we believe it’s far from the case and will sell like hotcakes. The launch was surprising considering CEO Elon Musk said that Tesla won’t produce the version of the Model Y because he said that the range would be “unacceptably low” at less than 250 miles. It reduced the starting price of the Model Y by $8,000. Of course, for that price difference, buyers not only lose 80 miles of range but also the dual motor powertrain. However, I am certain that many people are going to for that trade off, and that’s why Musk changed his mind. For most markets, 244 miles of range will be plenty and actually competitive with other vehicles in the segment. For example, the VW ID.4 has an EPA estimated range of 250 miles, and the base version of the Ford Mustang Mach E has 230 miles of range." Resons to deny: they need the sales from SR They can't get enough batteries Didn't want to tip competition Didn't want to osborne themselves Is it a response to ID.4 and Mach E https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/tesla-model-y-on-sale-china/ https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a35162425/2021-tesla-model-y-standard-range-announced/ https://electrek.co/2021/01/08/tesla-244-mile-range-model-y-unacceptable-sell-like-hotcakes/ MODEL Y'S TINY THIRD ROW "The Tesla Model Y third-row option doesn't jump out at you as you visit the automaker's website. However, if you've been keeping your eyes on it, you may know that the option is a few pages deep in the configurator. After choosing your crossover's color and wheels, you'll move forward to the page with what Tesla officially calls the "Seven Seat Interior." It's a $3,000 option. Adding the third row does not change the estimated delivery timeline." says InsideEVs. It's definitely not 7 adults, it's 7 people. It's akin to the Model S jump seats. " says CNBC "Daimler is one of many big automotive firms looking to make big plays in the electric vehicle sector and challenge Elon Musk’s Tesla. The Volkswagen Group, for instance, is investing 35 billion euros (around $42.86 billion) in electric vehicles and says it wants to roll out roughly 70 all-electric models by 2030." https://www.cnbc.com/2021/01/08/daimlers-mercedes-benz-triples-electric-car-sales.html FUTURE RENAULT EVS WILL REVIVE CLASSIC MODELS, REPORT SAYS "New Renault CEO Luca de Meo will revive some best-selling models from the brand’s past as electric cars under a turnaround plan aimed at improving sales and repositioning the struggling automaker, two sources familiar with the matter said." according to Automotive NEws EUrope: "De Meo, who has said he wanted to lean on the brand's French roots, will unveil an electric version of the now-phased-out Renault 4 small cars introduced in the early 1960s, the two sources said. There will also be a revived, electric version of another popular 1970s and 1980s model, based on the R5 or its successor the "Super Cinq,” the sources added. Among other Renault brands, the group will also present three new electric models for the Alpine sports car brand, the sources added. One of Renault's challenges will be to create distinct identities for each of the brands, which also include low-cost Dacia and Russia’s Lada." https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/future-renault-evs-will-revive-classic-models-report-says VOLVO CARS TO TRIPLE ELECTRIC PRODUCTION CAPACITY "Volvo Cars is tripling electric car manufacturing capacity at its plant in Ghent, Belgium, as it prepares to meet fast-growing demand for its Recharge line-up of chargeable cars. The capacity increase comes as Volvo Cars also reports its full-year sales results for 2020, which showed a strong growth in demand for the company’s Recharge models. The share of Recharge cars as a percentage of total sales more than doubled in 2020 compared with 2019." says EVObsession.com: "By 2022, electric car capacity at the Ghent plant will have more than tripled from today’s levels and amount to around 60 per cent of the plant’s total production capacity. Ghent is currently preparing to take a second fully electric Volvo model, based on the CMA modular vehicle architecture, into production later this year. The plant already builds the XC40 Recharge, the company’s first fully electric car, as well as plug-in hybrid versions of the XC40." https://evobsession.com/volvo-cars-to-triple-electric-production-capacity-in-ghent-after-strong-year-of-electrified-car-sales/ PORSCHE TAYCAN BEATS ELECTRIC CROSS-COUNTRY CANNONBALL RECORD "Our very own contributor Kyle Conner, along with friends Drew Peterson and Tijmen Schreur, headed out from New York City recently on a non-stop journey to Los Angeles, California in a 2020 Porsche Taycan 4S. The car is equipped with the largest battery, aerodynamic wheels, and, of course, massaging seats. Their goal: beating the Cannonball coast-to-coast record for an electric vehicle last set by Conner in a Tesla Model 3." repotrs MOtor1: "Rather than being a race between a Tesla and Porsche, this race really pits the Tesla Supercharger network against CCS fast chargers on other public networks. Conner is the current EV Cannonball Run record-holder. He set the record way back in August of 2019 in a Tesla Model 3. Conner traversed the States in just 45 hours and 16 minutes. Last week, Conner crossed the US in a Porsche Taycan 4S in just 44 hours and 25 minutes." https://uk.motor1.com/news/464945/porsche-taycan-beats-electric-cannonball-record/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK EV tech is on a rip, but is the constant improvement around an EV a possible reason NOT to buy one? World shares eked out slim gains on Wednesday, with optimism over economies easing coronavirus lockdowns and oil prices clawing back ground leavened by caution over corporate earnings. MSCI world equity index, which tracks shares in 49 countries, ticked up 0.2 percent, with European shares mirroring a buoyant day in Asia after initially choppy trading. The broad Euro STOXX 600 gained 0.1 percent, with German automaker Volkswagen saying it expected a full-year profit even after a plunge in first-quarter earnings. Daimler says it is also eyeing an operating profit for its Mercedes-Benz Cars & Vans unit. Still, major drugmakers Roche fell 2 percent and Novartis dropped 0.7 percent. Markets in Frankfurt and Paris both gained 0.3 percent, with London adding 1 percent. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/newscast-africa/support Learn more about your ad choices.

Just a few months after the CLA Coupé, the new CLA Shooting Brake is starting to leave the production lines at the Hungarian Mercedes-Benz plant in Kecskemét. This not only means that Mercedes-Benz Cars is putting the two sportiest models in the new compact car generation onto the roads in well-proven top quality – in production too, the company is setting standards with respect to flexibility, efficiency and sustainability. It means that the international ramp-up cascade for compact cars that started with the new A-Class in Rastatt in April 2018 has reached a further milestone.

MERCEDES-BENZ CARS LAYS FOUNDATION FOR A BATTERY FACTORY AT THE UNTERTÜRKHEIM SITE "At the site of the Mercedes-Benz Untertürkheim plant in Germany, the construction of the battery factory at the Brühl sub-plant has begun with the symbolic foundation-laying ceremony. By the end of the decade, Mercedes-Benz Cars will produce high-efficiency traction batteries for future Mercedes-Benz electric vehicles of the EQ product and technology brand on 12,000 m2 in a newly erected and carbon-neutral battery factory at Brühl." says Green Car Congress: "The new battery factory is an important component in the global battery production network within the production network of Mercedes-Benz Cars comprising nine battery factories at seven locations on three continents. Mercedes-Benz Cars is investing more than one billion euros in a global battery production network within the worldwide Mercedes-Benz Cars production network. Local battery production will be a major success factor in the electric initiative of Mercedes-Benz Cars, and the crucial component when it comes to meeting the worldwide demand for electric vehicles flexibly and efficiently, the company said." https://www.greencarcongress.com/2019/04/20190405-mb.html VW SEALS 10-YEAR LITHIUM DEAL FOR ELECTRIC CARS VW said yesterday it had secured 10 years worth of lithium for electric car batteries from Chinese manufcturer Ganfeng. "The two firms "signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on long-term lithium supplies for battery cells," VW said in a statement, although it did not reveal the financial terms of the deal. "Volkswagen is thus already securing a significant share of its lithium requirement," the Wolfsburg-based group added." says TheLocal.de: "With harsh EU emissions limits set to bite from next year and toughen further by 2030, the sprawling 12-brand company plans some 70 new electric models by 2028. As it emerges from the shadow of its painful "dieselgate" emissions cheating scandal, VW aims to sell around 22 million electric cars over the coming decade to escape fines from Brussels. Each smartphone battery contains three grammes of lithium, a laptop around 30 grammes and an electric car battery more than 20 kilogrammes" https://www.thelocal.de/20190406/vw-seals-10-year-lithium-deal-for-electric-cars ELON MUSK, SEC TOLD TO MEET ABOUT TESLA CEO’S TWEETS A federal judge in New York has ordered Bay Area-based Tesla CEO Elon Musk and U.S. securities regulators to meet for at least an hour to try and settle a dispute over Musk’s tweets. Judge Alison Nathan also told both sides Friday to send her a letter by April 18 saying whether they have reached a deal. If they don’t, Nathan will decide on the Securities and Exchange Commission’s motion to find Musk in contempt." reports CBS. com said: "The regulator weeks ago asked Nathan to hold Musk in contempt over a February tweet that misstated, and then clarified, a 2019 production forecast for Tesla vehicles. The agency argued that the tweets demonstrated that no one at Tesla was really keeping watch on Musk's communications as was mandated by a 2018 settlement with the agency. Musk's attorneys countered that the standard for what tweets must be reviewed wasn't clear enough to charge Musk with contempt. Jim Cramer said that he considers the hearing a "win" for Tesla, because he believes that the judge "punted." https://sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/2019/04/05/tesla-ceo-elon-musk-sec-told-to-meet-about-tweets/ https://www.thestreet.com/video/cramer-elon-musk-court-date-win-tesla-14918413 TESLA MODEL 3 JUMPS TO #1 IN THE NETHERLANDS, AMONG ALL CARS "The Dutch plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) market had another sales surge last month, with 4,721 plug-in registrations, up 252% year over year" according to CleanTechnica: "This good market performance was mainly due to the Tesla Model 3, which had 2,195 deliveries in March, a new record for any Tesla in the Netherlands, also allowing the Tesla sedan to last month’s best seller in the country, all fuel categories included, with an advantage of more than 1,000 units over the #2 Ford Focus (1,187 units)." https://cleantechnica.com/2019/04/05/tesla-model-3-jumps-to-1-in-the-netherlands-among-all-cars-cleantechnica-ev-sales-report/ TOYOTA OFFERS TO SHARE ELECTRIFIED TECH WITH RIVAL FIRMS "Toyota will offer other car firms royalty-free use of nearly 24,000 patents it holds for electrified vehicle technology, in a bid to accelerate the development of such machines." says James Atwood for Autocar: "The royalty-free technology licences relate to systems including electric motors, power control systems and system controls. While the bulk have been developed for Toyota’s hybrid technology, the firm says they can also be applied to plug-in hybrid and fuel cell vehicles. Toyota will also offer fee-based technical support to firms producing electrified vehicles that feature Toyota motors, batteries, power and electric control systems. It says the guidance will allow firms to “achieve high levels of vehicle performance.” https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/industry/toyota-offers-share-electrified-tech-rival-firms TESLA FLEXES ITS SOFTWARE PROWESS IN LATEST OVER-THE-AIR UPDATE "Earlier this week, Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) announced another software update for its vehicles. The update, which brought Tesla vehicles a step closer to autonomous driving, highlighted how rapidly the automaker can deploy a significant new feature -- all through a seamless over-the-air update." reports Daniel Sparks for Motley Fool: "Based on another announcement from Tesla last week, there's apparently much more to come on this front. The company announced it is unveiling its in-house-developed full self-driving (FSD) computer at an event in Palo Alto, California, on April 22. At the event, Tesla executives will discuss the computer and give test-drives to experience features that are "under active development."" https://www.fool.com/investing/2019/04/06/tesla-flexes-its-software-prowess-in-latest-over-t.aspx QUESTION OF THE WEEK RAJEEV NARAYAN With respect to the question of the week; I feel that I my data and location are already tracked in so many ways- my phone, Smart TV, CCTVs, credit card usage, such that the incremental risk of tracking my “smart” cars location/ driving habits is minimal, but the advantages in terms of allowing better software upgrades, etc... is greater than the risks. Also this sort of tracking is already present in many ICE cars now - for example most GM cars here in the U.S. have Onstar which tracks your location if you pay for the service or not. However for the vast majority of us, it’s totally irrelevant. Who doesn’t have a smart phone? That gives away far more information to anyone who can get access to the data than a connected car ever will. (I’m not going to lose sleep over it as I have nothing to hide. In fact it would be pretty boring if it was accessed AND identified by anyone. Most of this sort of data is normally totally de-identified.) David Nye Simon Clark With reference to your question on connected cars and privacy, this matter came up about 12 months or so ago on LinkedIn with specific reference to GDPR. There wasn’t a clear cut answer, but it’s not just connected cars. Most modern cars record telemetry in their engine management system which is then downloaded when the car is serviced. Different cars record different things, but all of that data is ultimately available to the manufacturer. However you don’t need an EV to be connected. A number of cars, including my Peugeot 3008 are ‘online’ either directly or via my mobile phone. JOSHUA PRITT Privacy in connected cars? What about privacy on smartphones? If you have a smartphone already then you're not really giving up any more privacy than you already have. Only now both Google and the car company can track you. It is worth it though since you can track your car if it's stolen and automatically call for help in a crash. In fact I even pay a monthly fee for this to OnStar. Having the cameras inside will help figure out who messed up your car if you ever loan it out. You can always cover it up with tape or something if you're paranoid. Like those that cover their laptop camera with a sticker or tape. I myself am not bothered one bit. I even have an Amazon Echo in almost every room of my house so I can turn lights on and off and set the temperature from wherever I am. ANDREW JACOBS Connectivity to cars is great. There are so many advantages such as being ably to remotely control the car, over the air updates and mobile internet connectivity. However information collected by companies should always be in the control of the customer. They must be able to turn off or on ANY information that is sent, even if it sacrifices the functionality of the car. JOHN FRUHWIRTH The question of privacy versus convenience is old and stale. That train has left the station. That ship has sailed, The jury is in. In general, society only works when there is a certain level of trust. We have already voted in favour of convenience over privacy. Here is my evidence: We routinely hand over our ID for "security" checks. We conduct business with credit cards, Transactions that can be tracked. We allow pre-authorized payments from our bank accounts for our regular bills. We share our intimate lives freely on social media. etc. I could go on, but I think you get the picture. MIA OPPELSTRUP For me, whether my EV is connected or not is not just a tradeoff between my own convenience or privacy, but also the greater good. If sharing my driving data helps make EVs the best self-driving cars, helps make them safer, or helps companies better plan charging networks based on where EV drivers actually travel, I'm all in. However I do believe that each person should have full control of their own data and EV drivers should have the ability to opt out of tracking, should they wish to do so. Thanks kindly for all you do to support EVs. Congrats on being the #1 auto show in the UK! I'll continue to spread the word here in the US. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today, and picked out the best ones to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. A developing story today in the UK. You know I talk about the carrot and the stick, in terms of what is needed to persuade people into EVs? We have the carrot here in the UK with £3500 off a new EV, but I also talk about the success of Norway using the stick. Hitting people with penalties to buy fossil cars. Now today in the UK there's a story about putting up tax on petrol to push people into considering alternatives. More tomorrow. DAIMLER, GEELY CREATE 50:50 JOINT VENTURE TO DEVELOP SMART The Daimler-owned Smart brand is something which hasn't been a huge commercial success and yet they've kept investing in it, and more recently, electrifying it. Most famous for making small cars it is being given a new lease of life. "Daimler is willing to give the brand another shot by teaming up with Lotus and Volvo owner Geely to transform Smart into a pure EV brand. Announced today, the deal involving Daimler and Geely represents a 50:50 joint venture in China where a new factory will be built to handle production of zero-emissions models." Says Adrian Padeanu for Motor1.com today: "These future cars will be styled by Mercedes and engineered by Geely, with the first models scheduled to hit the market globally from 2022. Interestingly, aside from ditching combustion engines altogether, the Smart brand will expand into the B-segment, which means the next decade will bring us subcompact cars from a brand exclusively known for its cutesy A-segment cars." Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars, said: “For more than 2.2 million customers, smart represents a pioneer in urban mobility. Based on this success story, we look forward to further enhancing the brand with Geely Holding, a strong partner in the electric vehicle segment. We will jointly design and develop the next generation of smart electric cars that combine high-quality production and known safety standards for sale both in China and globally." https://www.motor1.com/news/315724/daimler-geely-joint-venture-smart/ BMW WILL BUILD MINI ELECTRIC IN UK DESPITE BREXIT CONCERNS "Despite a number of carmakers saying that they’ll pull out of Britain when Brexit eventually happens BMW is pushing ahead with plans to produce the all-electric Mini over here. According to Automotive News Europe, BMW isn’t planning to implement any major changes to any of its plans in the UK – including the Oxford factory which is earmarked for electric Mini assembly." reports InsideEVs.com today: "The manufacturer is anticipating zero to five percent tariffs on goods if Britain leaves the EU without a deal, something that “won’t change Mini’s business model”. However, BMW’s chief executive officer Harald Krueger has warned that BMW could still move production to countries like the Netherlands at some point in the future should problems arise further down the line. The first electric Mini has been slated to begin production this year, and will become available worldwide, including the US where there is a possibility the brand could become electric-only in the coming years in a bid to boost sales." https://insideevs.com/bmw-build-mini-electric-uk/ SMOKING BMW I8 DUMPED IN WATER BY FIREFIGHTERS A tweet from the Fire Department in the Netherlands: "This morning an electric car started to smoke in a showroom. The employees of the garage and the fire brigade acted quickly to drive the car outside. Because it is an electric car, inventive action was necessary. The car is immersed in a container of water because extinguishing it in the 'normal' way is difficult with these cars. The car will remain in the water basin for the next 24 hours." Chris Bruce at Motor1 raises a good point though: "What's not clear is whether this is the fire department's usual reaction to an electrified vehicle fire. Traveling with a crane and giant water tank doesn't seem very convenient. Plus, if the BMW were already in flames, picking it up and placing the coupe into container doesn't seem safe. R will take on another special challenge in September 2019. Romain Dumas (F) will be back at the wheel of the 500-kW electric sports car for the “China Challenge” on the Tianmen Shan Big Gate Road – a unique stretch of tarmac, featuring 99 corners, which winds its way up Tianmen Mountain, located roughly 1,500 kilometres southwest of Beijing. As no official record exists for the eleven-kilometre mountain road, which is not accessible to public transport, Volkswagen China will run a competition prior to the record attempt, in which participants can set their own virtual time on the Tianmen Shan Big Gate Road. Dumas will then attempt to better the time of the fastest participant under real conditions in September. The Volkswagen ID. R, with which Romain Dumas set records at two famous hill climbs in June 2018 – first at the “Pikes Peak International Hill Climb” and then at the “Goodwood Festival of Speed” – is powered by two electric engines generating a total output of 500 kW (680 PS) and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.25 seconds. Before travelling to China in September, Dumas and the record-breaking ID. R will first set their sights on a new lap record for electric cars on the famous Nürburgring-Nordschleife. FIRST MERCEDES-BENZ ECITARO STARTS SERVICE IN BERLIN "Berlin Transport Authority (BVG) has received the first out of 15 ordered all-electric Mercedes-Benz eCitaro buses." reports InsideEVs.com: "The other thing is that Mercedes-Benz eCitaro currently is equipped with batteries of 243 kWh, which is enough only for 150 km (93 miles)." It's good news, but here's the context: Last autumn, BVG placed an order for up to 950 low-emission Mercedes‑Benz Citaro buses. It is the largest single order ever for Europe’s best-selling city bus. At almost the same time, BVG also ordered 15 fully-electric eCitaro buses. https://insideevs.com/mercedes-benz-ecitaro-berlin/ TESLA'S MUSK POKES FUN AT RAM TRUCKS 'PUNY' TOWING ABILITY Dodge Ram Owner @RamLover69 You would still be physically fatigued if you tried to haul 12,000 lbs of steel beams like I do every day with my Dodge Ram, 2019s motor trend truck of the year. @elonmusk 12,000 lbs!? SEAT ELECTRIC STRATEGY INCLUDSE SIX ELECTRIC The electric version of the Mii and el-Born will be the brand’s first two fully electric models, while the new generation Leon and the Tarraco will feature a plug-in hybrid version. Furthermore, the CUPRA Leon and the CUPRA Formentor will also have a plug-in hybrid variant. SEAT President Luca de Meo also announced today at the company’s annual media conference that the CUPRA Formentor, the new CUV that was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show, will be built at the Martorell factory. For the first time in the history of the company, SEAT will develop a new vehicle platform in collaboration with the Volkswagen brand, a smaller version of the Modular Electric Drive Toolkit (MEB) on which multiple vehicles of the size of around four metres in length by different brands, SEAT among them, will be made. The goal of the new platform is to develop affordable electric vehicles, with an entry level price below 20,000 euros. More than 300 highly skilled engineers will be participating in this project in Spain. https://www.seat-mediacenter.com/newspage/allnews/company/2019/SEAT-will-launch-six-electric-and-plug-in-hybrid-models-and-develop-a-new-platform-in-Spain-for-electric-vehicles.html GAC AION S IS EQUIPPED WITH 58.8 KWH CATL NCM 811 BATTERY "The GAC New Energy Automobile Co., Ltd. (GAC NE), the newest arm of GAC, recently announced specifications for the upcoming Aion S all-electric sedan, scheduled for market launch in China in May 2019." reports Mark Kane for InsideEVs.com: "The car, which was by GAC compared to the Tesla Model 3, is equipped with the latest NCM 811 battery cells supplied by CATL. The total capacity is 58.8 kWh, which should be enough for 510 km (317 miles) under NEDC. The information comes from a report in Financial Times (subscription required) that cites anonymous sources allegedly in the know about the deal on both sides of the fence." according to Motor1.com: "During the tenure of FCA’s former boss Sergio Marchionne, there were more than a few rumors regarding mergers and purchases, primarily with Chinese automakers. This new report speaks of a freshly merged Renault-Nissan company seeking to acquire FCA as well, ultimately creating a large corporation with enough clout to compete with the likes of Toyota and Volkswagen. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. And welcome to the party our newest member of the gang – and Producer of the show on Patreon - EDUARD PERTÍÑEZ WHAT CAR? NAMES KIA-ENIRO AS 'CAR OF THE YEAR' One of the curiosities of any car of the year award is how forward looking they are, and so yes it's amusing that a car which has delivered less than 1,000 in Europe can officially be the best car. But let's not understate the importance of a major magazine putting an electric car top of the pile. So I'll start with the big one, the overall car of the. The Kia e-Niro. As the editor Steve Huntingford says: "there are almost 4000 variations of around 400 cars listed in the data section at the back of this magazine, but after 12 months of testing we've whittled them down to the best in each class, with one of those standing out above all others as our 2019 Car Of The Year". So why did it win? They said: "The BMW 3 SERIES would have made a worthy overall winner, having overcome a former Car of the Year to take class honours, while the Citroën Berlingo and Cupra Ateca were also strong contenders. However, those cars have had the misfortune to be launched in the same year as Kia’s game-changing e-Niro. Put simply, the e-Niro beats its rivals via knockout rather than on points, because it’s the first sensibly priced electric car that can fit into most people’s lives. Its huge real-world range helps, allowing you to get to where you’re going without any fear that you’ll end up stranded by the roadside. But it also makes a very practical family car, comes loaded with luxuries and strikes just the right balance of comfort and composure. In short, the Kia e-Niro is a stunning achievement." Winner - Less Than £30,000 Renault Zoe: "Our 2017 ELECTRIC Car of the Year remains a compelling proposition two years on – and that’s some achievement, given the pace at which things are moving in this class. Chief among the Renault Zoe’s appeal is still its low price. But unlike other sub-£25k pure electric options, such as the Smart Fortwo EQ, you don’t have to put up with a feeble range. In fact, in our Real Range tests, the Zoe outperformed many much pricier options by managing 146 miles on a full charge. You can opt to buy the Zoe outright (that’s the ‘i’ model), but we reckon you’re better off buying just the car and leasing the battery from Renault. Why? Well, you’ll pay a much smaller up-front cost, and you’ll also benefit from a lifetime battery warranty, so you won’t need to worry about the potential of a huge bill in the future if the car’s range starts to tail off due to battery degradation. We’d go for the R110 model over the Q90 version for three reasons: it’s a bit cheaper and faster, plus you get a slightly longer range. The only downside is it’ll take you 1hr 40min to recharge from 0-80% via a 43kW rapid charger; the Q90 can manage that in 1hr 5min." Winner More THan £60,000 - Jaguar I-PACE EV400 S: "Tesla has made this price point its own over the past five years, so it’s a measure of Jaguar’s achievement that it has managed to topple the American brand at the first time of trying. The Jaguar I-Pace has all the ingredients you’d expect from a £64,000 Jaguar – and more. It’s fantastic to drive, unnervingly quick (0-60mph takes 4.5sec) and has an interior that’s far more impressive to look at and touch than those in Jaguar’s regular models. It also delivers a better real-world range than Tesla’s Model S 75D and is cheaper to buy. If you want your I-Pace dripping with luxuries (and we wouldn’t blame you), SE or even HSE trim is worth a look, but entry-level S trim makes the most sense. You don’t need to bother with optional air suspension, although you’ll probably want to pick a couple of creature comforts from the options list. Yes, it’s still pricey, and yes, it’s a shame there’s no Tesla-style 120kW Supercharger network to recharge your I-Pace in 30-odd minutes. But it is compatible with the new 100kW charging points that are just starting to appear, so an 80% charge within 45 minutes will soon be possible." Winner Best Hybrid - Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid Winner Plug In Hybrid = Volvo XC90 T8 Winner What Car? Reader Award 2019 - "Judging by the crowds that packed Honda’s stand at the 2017 Frankfurt motor show, the Urban EV was a popular car from its very first outing – so popular, in fact, that Honda confirmed a production version of the concept before the dust had even settled. What Car? readers clearly can’t get enough of it, either, because the Urban EV garnered almost eight times as many votes as our second-placed car. Put simply, it’s by far the car you’re most excited about seeing in 2019. And so you should be, because the Urban EV is shaping up to be a true game-changer for Honda. It’s the brand’s first electric car to be sold in Europe, and with it being shorter than its Jazz stablemate yet potentially even more spacious inside, as well as having an electric range of around 155 miles, it will be ideally suited to city streets. There’s a large digital screen for the instruments and infotainment system, plus smaller screens that show feeds from two cameras mounted on the car’s exterior in place of door mirrors." DAIMLER ADD BATTERY FACTORY IN POLAND In the course of the electric initiative Mercedes-Benz Cars will build a battery factory at the polish site in Jawor and thus extend the global battery production network of up to nine factories. Markus Schäfer, Member of the Divisional Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Cars: "“We will electrify the complete portfolio until 2022 and will be able to offer in each segment various electrified alternatives to our customers. This includes more than ten pure electric vehicles. We will produce batteries on our own, what we consider a significant success factor in the era of electric mobility. After the production of high-tech engines, we will establish additional future technology in Poland. The battery factory in Jawor is the second largest investment at this new Mercedes-Benz site.” With the construction of a battery factory on the existing ground at the site approximately 300 new jobs will be created. The battery assembly will be equipped with cutting-edge technologies. The series production of batteries for vehicles of the product and technology brand EQ is slated at the beginning of the next decade. They say: "Daimler is buying the cells on the world market and is instructing the suppliers to produce based on special specifications. In this way, the company is securing itself the best possible technology. With the purchase of battery cells for more than 20 billion euros, the company is establishing the preconditions for the consistent change towards an electrical future" https://media.daimler.com/marsMediaSite/en/instance/ko/New-site-in-the-global-battery-production-network-Mercedes-Benz-Cars-to-build-battery-factory-in-Jawor-Poland.xhtml AUDI PROVIDING 50 E-TRON SHUTTLES AT WORLD ECONOMIC FORUM "Audi, as the exclusive shuttle partner for World Economic Forum in Davos since 1987, is providing a fleet of 50 e-tron electric cars for shuttle service. This year World Economic Forum takes place on January 22 to 25." reports Mark Kane at InsideEVs.com: "The cars are powered by green electricity, through specially installed charging station with IONITY DC fast chargers and AC charging stands. On top of that is a 1.14 MWh/700 kW energy storage system in the form of mobile charging containers." https://insideevs.com/audi-50-e-tron-shuttles-world-economic-forum-in-davos/ TESLA ROLLS BACK SUPERCHARGER PRICE INCREASES TO APPEASE OWNERS Staying with InsdieEVs: "According to Electrek’s analysis, Tesla hoped to increase average pricing for Supercharging by some 33 percent as a whole. This number is not specific to all markets, since the automaker planned to adjust pricing based on local electricity costs, as well as area-based demand." says Steven Loveday: "Some were even going so far as to do the math, which showed that Supercharging could end up costing nearly as much as gassing up in some markets. Additionally, charging at some other non-Tesla stations could be cheaper. The truth of the matter is if people cancel their reservations due to this adaptation, Tesla could be in a much more dire situation. So, the money gained by increasing rates could easily be lost due to decreasing sales. Obviously, Tesla took notice of the contention on social media and forums, likely crunched some numbers, and decided that this plan is not going to work. J.G. Francis is the owner of Mercedes Motoring in Glendale California. He fell in love with Mercedes-Benz living next door to a Mercedes mechanic who taught him how strong and enduring the marque was. His passion for well-built and well engineered cars combined with his entrepreneurial spirit drove him to launch a business where he takes well loved old Mercedes-Benz cars produced between 1968 and 1985. He carefully and lovingly restores them to their original grandeur. Driving one of his comfortably worn-in beauties is like going back in time. I’ve seen his work, driven in his cars, and they are absolutely wonderful.
Hardtalk is in Stuttgart, Germany - a city with a long history of engineering and manufacturing. The auto industry is a major player here, which is good news for Stuttgart as long as the German car industry continues to thrive. Stephen Sackur speaks to Dieter Zetsche, the boss of Daimler, a company with a global reputation and the makers of Mercedes-Benz cars. However, over the past decade they have made some costly mistakes and they still face major challenges, not least the push for greener more efficient vehicles. Daimler has a proud reputation, but does it have a bright future?
The toughest leadership task for Dieter Zetsche chairman of the board of management of Daimler AG and head of Mercedes-Benz Cars was engineering last year's breakup of Daimler and Chrysler. But the experience taught him valuable lessons such as the importance of making timely decisions and the need to avoid information overload. Leadership Zetsche told his audience during a recent Wharton Leadership Lecture isn't always ”fun and games.” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
