In this episode, I speak with Bernie, a travel writer, filmmaker, and one of the few people who has traveled over 10,000 miles by horse and mule. He is the subject of the Emmy award-winning PBS North Carolina program "The Mule Rider" and the filmmaker and star of the "Lost Sea Expedition" series that premiered on Rocky Mountain PBS. He's paid for his journeys by doing everything from sending his followers postcards from Tasmania and training horses in the Virgin Islands to picking pecans in New Mexico. His upcoming book "Two Mules to Triumph," about his 7-month mule voyage from North Carolina to Idaho, is scheduled for release in 2024. Listen on to find out how Bernie has traveled the world in the most unconventional ways. --------- Hey Offbeat Family, I really appreciate you listening to this episode. Today, I'm joined by Bernie Harberts to learn how spilling a cup of coffee led him to a life of simplicity, slow travel, and being one of the only people in America to spend over 1,000 days and nights traveling by horse and mule. Bernie is an author, filmmaker, adventurer, and speaker. He prides himself on tackling big trips in small bites, which means using no-frills equipment, asking for help along the way, and not waiting until perfection to take off on a journey. In this episode, Bernie shares his experience traveling by mule, sailing around the world, and riding around Tasmania on a $10 bike. You'll learn about his philosophy around slow travel and why it's the most natural way to experience the world, and we have a deeper conversation about evolving with travel. Is travel essential to your personal evolution? I'd love to hear your thoughts and hope you'll share them by sending me an audio message. Bernie Harberts has litterally traveled the globe reading the signs of nature. Today we mostly talk about his most recent journey from Lenoir, NC to Triumph, ID riding a mule while leading another. He might as well be the guy who coined the phrase "stop and smell the roses."

It is the first series developed specifically for that service, and the first Star Trek series since Star Trek: Enterprise concluded in 2005. Set roughly a decade before the events of the original Star Trek series and separate from the timeline of the concurrent feature films, Discovery explores the Federation–Klingon cold war while following the crew of the USS Discovery. Gretchen J. Berg and Aaron Harberts serve as showrunners on the series, with producing support from Akiva Goldsman.Sonequa Martin-Green stars as Michael Burnham, the first officer of the USS Shenzhou and later the USS Discovery. The new series was announced in November 2015, and Fuller joined as showrunner the next February. In addition to Fuller and Kurtzman, who wrote for previous Star Trek series and films, respectively, the crew includes several other previous Star Trek creatives. Fuller wanted to make an anthology series, beginning with a prequel season to the original series, but CBS asked that he make a single serialized show first. In October 2016, after further disagreements with CBS and struggles with other commitments, Fuller left the series. Berg and Harberts took over day-to-day production using a mythology and broad story arc established by Fuller, while Goldsman joined then as support. The production put emphasis on carrying on the legacy of the previous series, including making efforts to feature a diverse cast. The values and designs of the Federation were updated for the series, but were expected to evolve towards those of the original series throughout Discovery's run. The show also heavily features the Klingon species, with the intent of exploring the central conflict from both perspectives. The Klingons were redesigned for the series, with influence from their previous appearances, the original inspirations for the species, and the novel The Final Reflection, as well as research on biology and evolution. The Klingon language is also extensively used. Set roughly a decade before the events of the original Star Trek series and separate from the timeline of the concurrent feature films, Discovery explores the Federation–Klingon cold war while following the crew of the USS Discovery. Gretchen J. Berg and Aaron Harberts serve as showrunners on the series, with producing support from Akiva Goldsman. Sonequa Martin-Green stars as Michael Burnham, the first officer of the USS Shenzhou and later the USS Discovery. The Klingons were redesigned for the series, with influence from their previous appearances, the orig --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app · The Colin and Samir Podcast: The Colin and Samir Podcast hosted by LA - based friends and filmmakers Colin and Samir takes a look into what it’s like to make creativity your career. https://open.spotify.com/show/5QaSbbv2eD4SFrlFR6IyY7?si=Dj3roVoJTZmOime94xhjng

Star Trek: Discovery – Season 2, Episode 1: Brother For episode 26 of The Star Trek Discovery Podcast, Ruthie and I discuss the Season 2 premiere of Star Trek: Discovery – S2E1, which is titled, Brother. It was written by Ted Sullivan & Gretchen J. Berg & Aaron Harberts (the latter two were the showrunners at the time this was filmed), and it was directed by the current showrunner and co-creator, Alex Kurtzman. We both loved this supersized movie-like premiere! If you haven’t given Discovery a try, this epic episode is one you can jump right in! We LOVE Captain Pike!!! If you’ve seen TOS (“The Cage” and “The Menagerie”) or the Kelvin Timeline films – specifically “Star Trek” (2009) and “Star Trek Into Darkness” (2013) – you are probably aware of Captain Christopher Pike, who captained the Enterprise before Kirk took command, but we didn’t know about his stint as the captain of the Discovery, while the Enterprise underwent extensive repairs after suffering severe ship-wide system failure. Pike takes command of the Discovery to investigate seven red bursts throughout spread out across more than thirty thousand light-years, but he considers it “shared custody” with Saru. Pike makes this episode, and if this episode is any indication, Pike will quickly become a fan favorite, if he isn’t already! They Have Stepped It Up This episode looks like a blockbuster movie! It looks every bit as good as the three Kelvin Timeline films. There have been reports that Berg & Harberts lost their showrunner jobs in part because the first three episodes went way over budget. I was skeptical of this report until I saw this first episode. When I said it looks like a hundred million dollars was spent on this episode, I wasn’t exaggerating. I know it wasn’t, but the quality of the visuals has far eclipsed what we saw in Season 1, which was already made it one of the best looking TV shows going. Fred’s Pics! In addition to our cover image, Fred from The Netherlands also provided us with some images from Brother! Thanks again, Fred!!! If you watched the first Short Trek, Runaway, you may have noticed a resemblance between Po and Commander Nhan. I know I did, enough that I had to check to see who played Nhan. Well, Fred thought Nhan was a Xahean, like Po. However, it’s been determined that she’s a Barzan, the aliens who tried to sell rights to the Barzan wormhole in TNG’s Season 3 episode, “The Price”. This first couple of images focus on Nhan, and how she compares to the Xahean leader, Po and the Barzan leader, Bhavani. STDP 026 – Comparing Po vs. Commander Nhan STDP 026 – Nhan is Barzan Here’s a great pic of Captain Pike, just as Discovery is about to be taken out of warp.

There are those 2 AM aimless Facebook scrolls I do on occasion (okay, more than I like to admit…) that sometimes uncover real gold… this is one of those deals. I ran across a picture of Bernie Harberts, his mule, Polly, and “The Lost Sea Expedition.” He had me at hello… Bernie Harberts has done what many of us wish we could do - slowed down long enough to observe a sped-up world from the vantage point of a 21 square foot solar-powered wagon pulled by his mule, Polly. Armed with modest camera equipment, he filmed what he lived: tumbleweed gales, snow storms, the highs of Badlands Blue and the low of Prairie Fever. He lived with the people of the Great Plains and recorded their thoughts on film. That footage and those insights became the Lost Sea Expedition series. In our chat, he discusses some surprises he found out on the Great Plains - where farmland is plentiful, but people? Not so much. He shares what he uncovered about a wide variety of people and points of view. If you’ve been discouraged by the raging storm of dividing opinions - you can take solace in what Bernie’s experienced first-hand: we’re still a very United America. GCB. Last month, Bryan Fuller stepped back as showrunner of Star Trek: Discovery, handing off the series to his "Number Ones," Gretchen Berg and Aaron Harberts. But this is not the first writing staff which Berg and Harberts have led. In 2012, the duo executive produced the short-lived ABC series, GCB, a comedy about five women in Dallas high society. In this episode of Stage Nine, John and Mike take a look at GCB. We discuss its similarity to other shows from the era, whether or not it works as satire, and why it failed to find an audience. Mike also relays his first experience riding The Tower of Terror. Too Proud to Ride a Cow, is author/adventurer Bernie Harbert's account of his 3,500-mile across America with a mule. Written to explain why and how he crossed the continent with little more than a twenty-year old mule, a tipi and a camera, “Too Proud” reveals the America Harberts discovered at his 8-mile per day pace. In addition to 9 maps, the 256-page book contains 93 photographs (47 in color) from Harberts’ voyage.
The Herberts came to America from Scotland in the 1700s to become the Harberts-and ancestors to Joseph Harbert, president of the Eastern Region of Colliers International, a commercial real estate brokerage firm.
