In today's episode of Bingeworthy, our TV and streaming podcast host Mike DeAngelo explores the mind of a criminal in “The Crowded Room.” Created by Akiva Goldsman (“A Beautiful Mind,” “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds,” “I Am Legend”), the show follows Danny (Tom Holland), a young man who is arrested for a violent crime in 70's Manhattan, and the complex case that arises from the accused man's unique condition. The show is inspired by a true story and also stars Amanda Seyfried, Emmy Rossum, Christopher Abbott, Sasha Lane, and more. READ MORE: ‘The Crowded Room' Review: Tom Holland And Amanda Seyfried Shine In A Psychological Thriller Joining Bingeworthy to discuss the show is creator and showrunner Akiva Goldsman. The show has been met by critics with mixed reviews, and Goldsman has a theory as to why. In the most recent episodes, the show has finally revealed that Danny (Holland) has multiple personality disorder, and many of the characters you've met are actually Danny's personalities. Goldsman believes the reviews stemmed from a request from Apple TV+ and Goldsman regarding these specific details. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/theplaylist/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/theplaylist/support
Akiva Goldsman has returned his production company Weed Road to Warner Bros, in a multi-year first-look deal. Goldsman previously worked at Warner Bros for two decades and will reunite with studio heads Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy. Two of his initial projects will be a sequel to “I Am Legend” with Will Smith and Michael B. Jordan, and a sequel to “Constantine” with Keanu Reeves. Goldsman's focus will be on IP that can play on a global scale theatrically. Goldsman's TV deal was previously with MGM, but he is now a free agent as he completes “The Crowded Room” for Apple TV+ and works on “Strange New Worlds” and the final season of “Picard.”

If you've ever been curious about what it takes to become a CFP, how to get your foot in the door of the Canadian financial industry, or how to set yourself for a successful retirement in Canada...then this episode is going to be just what you've been looking for. In this episode, I'm joined by Ryan Goldsman, the President of Monkey Credits and the author of Elmer's Nine & Dine: A Guide to Retirement Planning. Ryan Goldsman is a Certified Financial Planner, has worked for some of Canada's largest banks, and has taught at George Brown College in their financial planning program. He is now focused on growing his continuing education platform, Monkey Credits Inc. which offers courses to help future CFPs. Ryan shares how Monkey Credits was never meant to be a business, but 5 years on he's looking to expand its offerings to help further the education of financial planners across Canada. We also talk about his book Elmer's Nine & Dine, which is a succinct guide to retirement planning for Canadians (and a book I think every Canadian should read). This week on Episode 525 of Priority One: Jeffrey Combs speaks in evil robot about his appearance on Lower Decks, Prodigy showrunners drop some details about the series a month out from the premiere, and it's confirmed - the TNG cast really are one big happy family. In gaming news, a new T6 remaster of a classic workhorse starship comes to Star Trek Online, and finally we enter the holo-pod and look at the latest episode of Lower Decks “I, Excretus”. This week's Community Question is: “Would you still play Star Trek Online if it wasn't Star Trek?” Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! TREK IT OUT Edited by Jake Morgan Weyooops...Jeffery Combs With i09 By Jake Morgan A great actor makes you feel. Whether joy, anger, love, hate - a truly gifted thespian makes you ache for their presence - be it revered or reviled. We Star Trek fans are graced with many such actors and characters. Nimoy's Spock. Whoopie's Guinan. Comb's Weyoun. Comb's Brunt. Comb's Penk. Comb's Shran. Comb's...well, you get the picture. This week, i09 sat down with the prolific Star Trek trouper Jeffery Combs to talk about our latest favorite Comb's role - the devious supercomputer Agimus! Comb's had glowing things to say about the writing staff of Star Trek: Lower Decks, explaining to James Whitbrook of i09 what drew him to the show. ”I liked the script a lot and I'm really happy with how it turned out. I find it—the show—just to be really... witty. Rapid-fire. The joke is past you before you go, “Wh-wh-wha?” A different tone from any other Star Trek I've ever done. And I kind of like that. It's refreshing. It doesn't take itself quite so seriously as some of the other iterations.” While Combs was complimentary of Lower Decks, he wasn't shy about his feelings towards the entertainment industry. When asked whether he'd return to a LIVE-Action version of the franchise, Comb's said ”You have to be asked to dance. You have to be invited. It's really not up to me. But I kind of feel I still have some gas in the tank. But you know, when it comes to commerce and entertainment it's just like cereal: “New and improved!” [...]. So, I don't really know what goes through decision-makers' minds, but there always seems to be some sort of a disconnect between what the fans would enjoy and what they wind up doing. Not always. Not always.” To find out how Comb's felt about playing an antagonist, his thoughts on Voice Acting, and much more, be sure to follow the link in our show notes at priorityonepodcast.com! One big happy TNG family By Rosco McQueen Some news that as Star Trek fans we've all known for a while, but is heartwarming to see it confirmed. Yes, the cast of The Next Generation really do all like each other. In fact, they're all incredibly close. In an interview with The Express in the UK, Marina Sirtis confirmed that the cast do indeed see themselves as a family. They've been friends since the early days of the series… and the producers hated it. "They hate when the cast like each other because they talk. Producers don't want you talking. They want us all hating each other and being competitive with each other, so that they can lie to you." Sirtis explains how after the death of her husband, it was the crew who were there for her soon after. Lavar Burton, Brent Spiner and Michael Dorn all immediately visited with Sirtis on the day her husband, Michael Lamper, died. She also spoke about the support she received from Gates McFadden. Akiva gets his Wish By Cat Hough Akiva Goldsman has been extremely busy of late, acting as executive producer and co-showrunner for both Star Trek: Picard and the upcoming series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. If those two roles weren't busy enough he also wrote and directed the pilot episode of Strange New Worlds. Goldsman told Trekmovie.com that it was really important to him to set the tone and style of the show, saying “I really wanted to make a show that would have appealed to the 12-year old me that went to that Star Trek convention in 1974. And it felt like the best way to do that would be to kind of help set the tone visually, and really more in storytelling.” He also notes that the audience will notice some changes in the uniforms and sets from how they appeared in Discovery, since he wanted it to look more in line with the Original Series. As we have mentioned in previous episodes, Strange New Worlds will be episodic, and Goldsman expounds on that, saying “Our characters will carry with them what they suffer from, or what they learned, from episode to episode. But the stories are episodic.” In addition to the show being episodic, Goldsman says that the show is meant to be an ensemble piece - so it won't just be ‘The Pike Show' and while it won't go into every character's backstory each episode, there will be a “focus” on different characters as the show goes on. Starfleet snippets from Prodigy showrunners By Rosco McQueen Star Trek: Prodigy is a month away from its debut, and the showrunners are dropping some tiny trek nuggets in interviews. In a chat with TrekMovie, Prodigy executive producers Kevin and Dan Hageman and co-executive producer/director Ben Hibon reinforced the idea that this new series, specifically for kids, is an entry point to the franchise. Kevin Hagemen said “While these are kids in our show, they're in the adult world of Trek. And they're gonna slowly discover it, and have their falls, and their victories and stuff. It really is a show for people who have not experienced Trek before.” The journey of the Prodigy crew starts in the Delta Quadrant, with many familiar races that Voyager came across. In the interview the producers mention there are very well thought out reasons why we will see so many Alpha species in the Delta Quadrant, but that no one has really got it yet. They also mention that the USS Protostar was launched after Voyager returned home, but then quickly halt the conversation around the prototype's secret origins. The show takes place in 2383, five years after Voyager returned home. Quick News Roundup Here are a few headlines that we didn't discuss but might interest you. Writer Andy McAdams pointed out “I started binging on Star Trek Discovery again and it made me want to play the game, so I downloaded it. But I know I don't particularly enjoy the game and I'm only playing it for the IP. For me, I don't think it would stand on its own.”Another writer, Tyler Edwards, says “I don't think I'd ever have spent any significant amount of time on this game without the IP”. But he hits an important note pointing out that “What makes the game work is the massive amount of love the people behind it clearly have for the Star Trek universe.”

Second, it will likely have a more classic Original Series theme and look. Showrunner Akiva Goldsman said it's important to keep continuity with The Original Series, while also distinguishing Strange New Worlds as its own show. Can't even tell the difference. Image: ViacomCBS. Goldsman described it to The Hollywood Reporter saying, “Remember the Enterprise existed as a little piece of [the show Discovery] but now is its own object. When you close your eyes and think of the key sets and situations that you think of in The Original Series, that's what we're looking to do." We may possibly get more information during Comic-Con@Home since a Star Trek Universe panel has been announced–though my best guess will be sometime in early 2022. Star Trek@Comic-Con@Home By Cat Hough Speaking of the San Diego Comic-Con–or the virtual version, Comic-Con@Home–Paramount+ announced back-to-back Star Trek panels starting Friday, July 23 at 10 a.m. PT. Paramount+'s Comic-Con panels will feature sessions with the cast and producers from Star Trek: Prodigy and Star Trek: Lower Decks. Images: ViacomCBS/Comic-Con International, via Deadline. Prodigy, the first Star Trek animated kids series [TAS doesn't count, we've been over this already–Ed.], will kick off the presentation with Lower Decks set to follow. The Prodigy presentation will be the inaugural panel for the upcoming kids series, following a crew of young aliens who must figure out how to work together, while navigating a greater galaxy in search of a better future. These six young outcasts know nothing about the ship they have commandeered, but over the course of their adventures together, they will each be introduced to Starfleet and the ideals it represents. Lower Decks voice cast members Tawny Newsome, Jack Quaid and Eugene Cordero will then appear with creator Mike McMahan for an exclusive conversation and an extended look at Season 2 with Lower Decks' own Jerry O'Connell moderating the conversations. And speaking of Lower Decks… Lower Decks Season 2, Coming Through! By Rosco McQueen It's officially one month until Lower Decks returns to the screen for season two, with a very short teaser released this week. While the teaser was short, in Lower Decks fashion it was brimming with details. In the opening shot alone we saw the Cerritos alongside some Parliament-class starships, Andorian cruisers, a Maquis Raider and a couple of Daedalus-class ships, all docked at a starbase that seems inspired by the Watchtower-class from Trek-lit novels. In the teaser Mariner and Boimler crash through a space mall in a space dune buggy, and narrowly avoid some space fish people [they're not people!–Ed.] originally seen in The Next Generation. The lower deckers sport some flashy new dress uniforms, and just to add to the mix, some Commander Data collectable figurines fly out the back of the buggy. https://twitter.com/StarTrek/status/1414630633448480776?s=20 Did we miss anything? Commanding Time In Star Trek Fleet Command By Rosco McQueen It's the best of both worlds, only this time it's part three! The third section of Star Trek Fleet Command's Next Generation arc has just landed, with Commander William T. Riker in the spotlight. Patch 32 brings with it a new officer, a new ship and, for Star Trek Online players, some familiar gameplay elements to the Kelvin Universe. “With the Enterprise-D mysteriously returned to its former glory, the time has come to find and rescue the rest of the crew and get them home to their own universe. You manage to track down Commander William Riker, who finds himself at the forefront of the Bajoran resistance against the rampant Cardassian Empire. And with the Cardassians holding many Enterprise-D crew members captive, the conflict is personal for Riker.” Amazing, The Beard actually overpowers the lens flare. Image: Scopely. This week on Episode 504 of Priority One: We #TrekOut what Akiva Goldsman has to say about developing #StarTrek #Picard and Strange New Worlds, a sci-Fi documentary that will give you all the feels, and chairs (because, you know, lumbar support is important in the Multiverse). In gaming, Star Trek Online teases a new ship in their Infinity Lock Box, Modiphius has updates, and Scopley has patch notes for Star Trek Fleet Command. This week's Community Questions are: CQ: Where is your new Star Trek chair going? At your desk for commanding starships and taking down intergalactic baddies? Or in your living room facing your big screen TV where you can order the rest of your family around like the magnificent crew they are? CQ: Are you a Star Trek Adventures player? If so, what new product excites you the most? If not, does any of these announcements pique your interest in the game? Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! TREK IT OUT Akiva Goldsman on Star Trek: Picard & Strange New Worlds By Elio Lleo Well, it's been a little over a week since First Contact Day and the virtual event held by Paramount+ that offered up so many tantalizing teases about the future of Star Trek. Fortunately, James Hibberd of The Hollywood Reporter had an opportunity to follow-up on some of those announcements with an interview featuring writer-producer Akiva Goldsman, co-showrunner on both Star Trek: Picard and Strange New Worlds. Up first–how does Strange New Worlds compare to NuTrek, like Star Trek: Discovery and Picard? According to Goldsman, “Strange New Worlds is very much adventure-of-the-week but with serialized character arcs.” But what about the visual style? Well, with respect to visual changes from what we saw on Discovery, Goldsman explained that they want “Strange New Worlds to be a different show. It's not Discovery. There are a few more reach-backs (to The Original Series) and the uniforms have been adjusted slightly, the sets are slightly different.” Image: Russ Martin/CBS, via The Hollywood Reporter. As the interview progresses, Goldsman might have accidentally let his feelings slip when discussing lessons learned after completing Season 1 of Star Trek: Picard saying, “Figure out the end earlier. If you're going to do a serialized show, you have the whole story before you start shooting. It's more like a movie in that way — you better know the end of your third act before you start filming your first scene.” The interview goes on to discuss how Q might impact Picard (but those answers are vague) and his involvement with a Dark Tower series, and a Firestarter movie. But, this was an excellent interview that we encourage you all to read… so #TrekItOut! The Definitive 80s Sci-Fi Documentary By Rosco McQueen The 1980's were a powerhouse decade for science fiction films. And that's judging it on sheer volume alone. In terms of Star Trek, we went from Wrath of Khan to the Final Frontier over the course of the decade. In between were myriad franchises, one-off films, and galactic adventures that captured imaginations of the young and old. The team behind In Search of Tomorrow: The Definitive 80s Sci-fi Documentary aims to distill all of the mythos of 80's sci-fi into a four hour film. The project began production in 2019, and then launched a crowdfunding campaign in 2020, becoming one of the most successful Kickstarter documentary campaigns of all time. Image: CREATORVC, via BloodyDisgusting. The project has over 75 names included in the story, most recently adding director Ivan Reitman (Ghostbusters I & II), producer Gale Anne Hurd (The Terminator, Aliens), and actor Peter Weller. The news this week is the team is launching another crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo to expand production efforts, add more interviews, and allow fans the opportunity to pre-order the film. Taking A Seat From The Ready Room Table By Rosco McQueen Is the style of your table setting missing a final frontier flavour? Are your virtual ward room meetings missing that one essential piece of furniture to really Trek it up? Thanks to the collective efforts of Star Trek fans and artists, now you can finally track down that Trek chair you've always wanted. Yes, even Worf's uncomfortable bubble chair. Image: CBS/Ex Astris Scientia, via Fast Company. In an article on design website fastcompany.com, 3D artist Tadeo D'Oria from Buenos Aires explains how he went from creating purpose-built 3D models of Star Trek sets for role-playing games, to collating a database of props and sets across Trek movies and series. “Other fans had already identified several of the chairs used through the series (mostly the original '60s show) and even created replicas. However because of my job doing essentially 3D reproductions of these chairs, having information about them was invaluable to me in order to work faster.” D'Oria has since worked on the TNG virtual set tour video game, Stage 9, which was eventually shut down by CBS. But not wanting to let the database go to waste, he collaborated with Bernd Schneider, who runs the site Ex Astris Scientia, to host the future furniture suite. CQ: Where is your new Star Trek chair going? At your desk for commanding starships and taking down intergalactic baddies? Or in your living room facing your big screen TV where you can order the rest of your family around like the magnificent crew they are? I'll Take “Favorite Starship Engineers” for 1,000 By Cat Hough The search for the regular host on Jeopardy is still going through its interviewing process, currently featuring a slew of guest hosts, including Aaron Rodgers and Ken Jennings. But the field of candidates may have just gotten smaller, because now there's a petition making the rounds on Twitter in support of Levar Burton getting the job. Earlier this week, the social media hype train started rolling with a tweet from Stephen Colbert showing his support for Burton and Star Trek in general. That was then followed by Dick Van Dyke tweeting his support and sharing the link to the petition. As of this recording, a little more than 231,000 people have signed the petition to have Burton be the next Jeopardy host. Now here are a few headlines that we didn't discuss but might interest you. First up, The Hollywood Reporter published an article on April 9th reviewing new dates for films planned by Paramount. According to the report, an untitled Star Trek feature film is slated to be released on June 9, 2023. No details about the film have yet to be announced… other than they have it on the calendar. CBS and the Television Academy Partner to launch a “Star Trek Command Training” program. What does that mean? Well, graduate and undergraduate college students nationwide can apply to be a part of an 8-week, paid internship immersing you in the production process of the Star Trek Universe. Direct from StarTrek.com, “Selected interns will be actively engaged in writers' rooms, wardrobe design, on-set production, animation and post-production on Los Angeles-based programs and will earn up to $4800.” Submissions for the Fall Session end April 28th at 5pm. While we covered an interview with Akiva Goldsman a few moments ago, John de Lancie also caught up with Variety to talk about returning to the role of Q in Star Trek: Picard. Although he couldn't divulge any specifics about his role in Picard's life, the interview does explore de Lancie's life and times as Q in the Star Trek Universe. Perhaps most fascinating is how focused he is as an actor. If you missed Saturday Night Live's April 10th show, you might have missed another Star Trek parody! In this latest Trek-themed sketch, Paramount+ is home to the new prequel series, Starcharter Andromeda–where a few fresh grads are abound with entitlement! Featuring Oscar-nominee Carey Mulligan, it's a work-place parody. Remember captains, to learn more about these headlines, be sure to review the show notes for this episode at priorityonepodcast.com STAR TREK GAMING NEWS Jovian Raider added to Infinity Lock Boxes By Rosco McQueen The Discovery season three additions to Star Trek Online keep coming, with a new ship being added to the game's Infinity lock box. Starting April 15, captains will have a chance when opening an Infinity lock box to score a T6 Jovian Intel Heavy Raider. “Also referred to as a “Titan Raider” when it showed up in Season 3 of Star Trek Discovery, this ship was one of several led by the infamous and mysterious leader known as Wen, as it harassed the United Earth Defense Forces in a tense standoff.” Image: Cryptic Studios. The Raider will sport a five fore, one aft, weapon configuration, with five Tactical, three Engineering, and three Science consoles. The Bridge officer loadout looks adaptable to your build, with 1x Commander Tactical / Intelligence, 1x Ensign Universal, 1x Lieutenant Universal / Miracle Worker, and 2x Lieutenant Commander Universal stations. The ship also comes with a universal console ‘Harvester Mode” and an experimental weapon, the Threat Deterrent Charge Launcher. The weapon will trail enemy-seeking projectiles from your ship, which then deal electrical damage with an accuracy debuff. Star Trek Fleet Command Releases Patch 29 By Cat Hough Star Trek Fleet Command recently released its latest major update, Patch 29, which dropped a new story arc with 15 new missions. Plus, you can upgrade your fleet with a Second Research Queue, and get the all-new Franklin-A ship and choose from some other ship refits, and this patch also introduces Jaylah as a new epic officer. There were some significant game improvements and bug fixes implemented as well. Image: Scopely. Improvements include: Letting the Change Resource Token Conversion sliders to max out at the amount needed for the current building. Updates to UTC Time on the player profile. Providing smooth camera transitions when selecting different items in the refit management window instead of a hard cut. Viewing ship cosmetics in AR. Bug fixes Various localization issues have been fixed Fixed an issue with a visual glitch when relocating in New Calgary Fixed an issue with the HUD disappearing when returning from the player profile to the full scan screen for a station that relocated to another system Fixed an issue within the “Skarrl” system, the sun has a disc that is vertical rather than horizontal. Fixed the USS Franklin Impulse Speed research buff to reflect for all the docked ships. Adventures In Project Management By Elio Lleo Adding to the First Contact Day celebrations, Modiphius Entertainment published a Project Manager video update highlighting the current state of the Star Trek tabletop adventure, plus upcoming expansions and items that will be available this year. For starters, the Shackleton Expanse Campaign is slated to release this summer with compatibility to play either as a Klingon or Federation character. They're also planning to release a “TOS Tricorder Set” sometime during the third quarter of 2021. Included in the tricorder-shaped package is a pocket-sized rulebook, a 3-part campaign book, custom dice, and character sheets! Jim Johnson, the Project Manager, goes on to answer some community questions–so, if you're a fan of these table-top adventures and want to learn more, be sure to watch the entire video. https://www.youtube.com/embed/Oq2s1lL49ZM CQ: Are you a Star Trek Adventures player? In between were myriad franchises, one-off films, and galactic adventures that captured imaginations of the young and old. The team behind In Search of Tomorrow: The Definitive 80s Sci-fi Documentary aims to distill all of the mythos of 80’s sci-fi into a four hour film. Thanks to the collective efforts of Star Trek fans and artists, now you can finally track down that Trek chair you’ve always wanted. Yes, even Worf’s uncomfortable bubble chair. Image: CBS/Ex Astris Scientia, via Fast Company. In an article on design website fastcompany.com, 3D artist Tadeo D’Oria from Buenos Aires explains how he went from creating purpose-built 3D models of Star Trek sets for role-playing games, to collating a database of props and sets across Trek movies and series. “Other fans had already identified several of the chairs used through the series (mostly the original ’60s show) and even created replicas. However because of my job doing essentially 3D reproductions of these chairs, having information about them was invaluable to me in order to work faster.” D’Oria has since worked on the TNG virtual set tour video game, Stage 9, which was eventually shut down by CBS. I’ll Take “Favorite Starship Engineers” for 1,000 By Cat Hough The search for the regular host on Jeopardy is still going through its interviewing process, currently featuring a slew of guest hosts, including Aaron Rodgers and Ken Jennings. But the field of candidates may have just gotten smaller, because now there’s a petition making the rounds on Twitter in support of Levar Burton getting the job. Now here are a few headlines that we didn’t discuss but might interest you. Although he couldn’t divulge any specifics about his role in Picard’s life, the interview does explore de Lancie’s life and times as Q in the Star Trek Universe. Perhaps most fascinating is how focused he is as an actor. If you missed Saturday Night Live’s April 10th show, you might have missed another Star Trek parody! In this latest Trek-themed sketch, Paramount+ is home to the new prequel series, Starcharter Andromeda–where a few fresh grads are abound with entitlement! Featuring Oscar-nominee Carey Mulligan, it’s a work-place parody. This week on Episode 465 of Priority One --- We ‘Trek Out' Culber's focus on mental health, Goldsman's tease of Picard season 2, Jack Quaid's initiation into Trek-stardom, Gossipy-Gossip, and a teeny-tiny set! Of course, as always, before we wrap up the show, we'll open hailing frequencies for your incoming messages Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! This Weeks Community Questions Are: CQ: Are you excited to see more “Starfleet” in season 2 of “Picard”, or would you prefer the second season to focus on something else entirely? TREK IT OUT by Jake Morgan Wilson Cruz on Culber's Mental Health What would it feel like to be resurrected - Pulled from the clutches of death, returned into the land of the living? The wholly unusual event must be disconcerting - being one of the few people pulled from eternal oblivion. Just ask Spock, McCoy, Scotty, Worf, Wesley Crusher, Janeway, Picard - or Dr.Hugh Culber. Wilson Cruz, the actor who portrays the resurrected Doctor - Culber not McCoy - discussed the effects of breathing again with Yahoo Entertainment's “The Talk”. Cruz told “The Talk” that he didn't originally know his character was going to be killed, but was glad to receive a call shortly after to reprise the role. During those conversations, Cruz made it clear that he didn't want Culber's death to be meaningless “So many times we see these LGBQ characters, especially gay characters, killed off on our series, and there's no cost. It's as if it never happened. And I wanted there to be growth in this. He needed to learn something from it, we all did. So, I was excited about the epic way he was brought back” Cruz continued, dropping a few hints about what to expect in Discovery's third season ”I'm more excited about how he's grown in season 3 - how he's used this experience to kind of inform the way that he works on the ship. And so, we'll see more of how he works as a doctor, but also how he's taking into consideration mental health.” Akiva Goldsman Talks Picard's Second Season Wilson Cruz wasn't the only Trek-insider to talk about the future of a Star Trek series. Writer, Director, Show runner, and now prolific video interviewee Akiva Goldsman discussed Star Trek: Picard's first season, and what we may expect going forward. Goldsman told IndieWire's Christian Blauvelt that the introduction of Altan Inigo Soong, played by the incomparable Brent Spiner, served a bigger purpose than simply moving the narrative. ”We knew that this Soong character had been in our head canon when it came to the season, anyway. But, you know, we want more Brent, and we wanted to create a platform for which there could be more Brent in ensuing seasons” In regards to the introduction of the Riker-led Starfleet Armada in "Et in Arcadia Ego — part II," Goldsman acknowledged ”We knew that bringing in that fleet was a little bit of a promise, and so we tried to be thoughtful about it”. The video interview ends there, but in the article that accompanies the video, Goldsman is quoted as saying ”Especially as we go forward, we're going to start making statements about really what the world of Starfleet, at least technologically if not socially and culturally … These are the things that are likely to get a little bit more play than they did [in Season 1] in what was essentially a story about somebody who is outside of Starfleet.” For more on the development of Picard's first season, including the inspiration for the 2390's ship design, be sure to trek out the link in our show notes. Jack Quaid Describes “Lower Decks” If you're involved in Trek, no matter what else you are working on or promoting, you WILL talk about your Trek involvement - and Jack Quaid had his first lesson in this. The star of the upcoming animated comedy “Lower Decks” sat down with Entertainment publication Gold Derby to promote season 2 of the popular Amazon Prime series, “The Boys” - and as sure as the sun rises, Star Trek was addressed. Quaid, who plays “Lower Decks” Ensign Brad Boimler, admitted he wasn't sure about a release date, telling Gold Derby ”I don't know when it's coming out. I know I've recorded most of my stuff for it but it's a new “Star Trek” show, it's animated, it's from Mike McMahan, who's one of the writers on “Rick and Morty” and he's frickin' hilarious.” Like the aforementioned McMahon, Quiad stressed the comedy is for both trek fans - like self-proclaimed “trek nerd”, Gold Derby reporter Kevin Jacobsen - and non-trek fans ”If you are a huge “Star Trek” nerd[...]you're gonna get a lot of the references and a lot of the deep cut jokes, but I think even if you're new to it, I think it's something really cool to introduce you to the “Star Trek” universe as well. Me speaking personally, I didn't know a ton about it when I got cast. I had seen the J.J. Abrams movies but now I'm into it.” Kirk-shipping May Be Canon? You want gossip, Captains? You've got it. We head back to the questionable “WeGotThisCovered” for our next story, so be sure not to take this Gossip as Gospel. If you'll remember back in episode 460 of Priority One, we told you about the RUMORED casting of a young James T. Kirk for the upcoming Pike/Spock/Number 1 series, “Strange New Worlds”. This week, WeGotThisCovered has doubled down on the rumor, claiming that not only are they casting Kirk for the series, but he may be Bisexual. According to the site ”Trusted insider Daniel Richtman has revealed on Twitter that sources are telling him Kirk could end up being portrayed as bisexual in SNW.” https://twitter.com/DanielRPK/status/1271905503678009344 You may be surprised to find out that the Original Kirk - William Shatner - had an opinion on the matter. On June 14th, Shatner TWEETED ”I suppose some of you want my reaction to the article from the “never heard of them before & clickbait rules” site on their scoop on bisexual Kirk? If @CBS,@Alex_Kurtzman & @Startrek decide to make Kirk bisexual to align with cancel culture presentism; then it's OK
Akiva Goldsman hints at more Starfleet and maybe more Brent Spiner in future Star Trek: Picard, Jonathan Frakes refers to “Code of Honor” as an “embarrassment”, but is optimistic for “radical real change” in the future, and I’ve got this week’s Trek trivia! This week on Episode 463 of Priority One --- We ‘Trek Out' Akiva Goldsman's Batman and Robin apology and what he has to say about Discovery, Bryan Fuller gets candid, and the cast of Star Trek Voyager reunite for a good cause! In Star Trek Gaming, Star Trek Online's No-win Scenario re-emerges, and says “To Hell With Honor,” and lastly we welcome Fazri Zubair of Lucid Sight's Crypto Space Commander! CQ: Would a season long “Year of Hell” be something you'd want to see as dedicated Star Trek Series? Akiva Goldsman Chats with Collider Last week, we told you about a Collider interview with Star Trek producer, director, and writer Akiva Goldsman. On Friday May 29th, the video of that interview was posted to Collider's youtube channel, and it contained a slew of new information. Goldman apologized for “Batman and Robin” - it was heart-felt, but we're not sure it was enough...BUT...he also talked a bit more about Star Trek. Strap in, because this week we've got AUDIO! Goldsman told Collider he was not involved with Discovery's third season, but did have some information on what's to come, saying “So Alex [Kurtzman] has really been deeply involved in the building out of what season three looks like and what that post-Federation future is. I have seen some of it because, you know, we all work together in the same - or we did - place with lots of Star Trek pictures on the wall and editing bays and things, you know. It seems awesome to me. It's not a final frontier but it is a new one.” - Akiva Goldsman Goldsman also revealed an interesting tidbit about Discovery's jump to the distant future: “We all helped build that idea, all the way back to season one. Aaron Harberts and Gretchen Berg, the original showrunners from season one, that idea dates all the way back to that. I think it is a spectacular idea, which is to go post the timeline we know.” - Akiva Goldsman Bryan Fuller Talks “Voyager” Bryan Fuller is to Voyager what Jonathan Frakes is to Next Gen. Every time the man speaks, he leaves juicy audio clips in his wake. This week, the former-Voyager staff writer sat down with the la “Inglorious Treksperts” podcast to celebrate Voyagers Silver Anniversary, and sprinkled trek nuggets all up in our sauce. Fuller discussed the push-and-pull between Voyager's creative team and then-Trek-Head-Rick-Berman, saying: ”I think what was interesting in the evolution of the show, which you could sense the creative struggle. And I witnessed the creative struggle when I was working there. And there was an appetite for these bigger, bolder science fiction stories. And there was a lot of resistance from Rick Berman in embracing them because he was chasing The Next Generation and was not allowing Voyager to be the show that it could be.” - Bryan Fuller But Fuller wasn't done. He went on to describe the writer's room's plan to make one of Star Trek's best two-parters - “Year of Hell” - a season long arc, and Berman's reaction. "The “Year of Hell” and the behind-the-scenes drama around trying to craft not only that episode, but that season, was fascinating because we wanted “Year of Hell” to last the entire season. We wanted to see Voyager get its [EXPLETIVE] kicked every episode and through that season was going to be marbled the story of Annorax and the time ship that was changing things. So, we would go back to it every once in a while to remind the audience that's the larger story. But because Deep Space Nine had made Rick Berman allergic to serialized storytelling, violently so [we did not]” - Bryan Fuller When asked why Fuller thought Deep Space Nine was able to get away with things Voyager wasn't, Fuller pulled no punches. "Ira [Steven Behr] didn't give a [EXPLETIVE] what Rick Berman said, and Brannon [Braga] did. Ira was like, “I don't care, you're wrong. This is what we're doing and fire me if you want to.' He was always like ‘Fire me. If you don't like what I'm doing, fire me, but this is what we're doing. So if you're not behind it, then I suggest you find someone else to do my job'” - Bryan Fuller “Stars in the House” Voyager Reunion After 25 years, a reunion is in order! And that's exactly what happened on Tuesday, May 26th. The cast of Star Trek: Voyager met via Zoom, along with Seth Rudetsky and James Wesley - hosts of “Stars in the House” - to talk Trek - but more importantly - to raise money for “The Actor's Fund” charity. The one hour meeting - which was organized by the “Stars in the House” hosts and Voyager's Robert Picardo - was a fun way to look at Voyager's behind-the-scenes dynamic. Robert Duncan McNeil - portrayer of helmsman Tom Paris and He-Man pal Kevin Corrigan - talked about Kate Mulgrew's first day on set. Mulgrew put on the jumpsuit after the departure of Geneviève Bujold: Voyager's first Captain Janeway. "There was a lot of uncertainty, I guess, when Geneviève left. There was a lot of uncertainty. Was the show going to get made? You know, were they going to make it a male captain? Maybe they couldn't find a female who they felt could do this. And the moment you said the first line on the bridge, personally I felt like ‘this shows going to work. We're going to make it. Now it's is all together.'” - Rober Duncan McNiel Mulgrew, who has expressed interest in returning to the role of Janeway, was eager to ask former co-star and current Picard actor Jeri Ryan about what's going on with Star Trek's newest series. "What's the plan, now, going forward. Nobody knows anything” to which Ryan replied: "We were originally supposed to start shooting in the middle of June, but they would have had to started building the sets in the middle of May, which we can't do So we're just waiting. They're hoping that we can start shooting in the beginning of fall. I don't know.” - Jeri Ryan BLACK LIVES MATTER This week, Priority One: A Roddenberry Star Trek Podcast did not record its 463rd episode live. It has been our weekly goal to entertain and inform our listeners of the goings-on in the Star Trek Multiverse. We like to consider ourselves an enjoyable distraction to your everyday lives; but, sometimes, it's irresponsible to ignore what is happening in the world. This week in the United States, protests and rioting erupted when George Floyd was murdered by members of the Minneapolis Police Department. Floyd's death, centuries of oppression, systemic racism, police violence, and discrimination of Black and Brown Americans have sparked protests at home and abroad. On June 2nd, Star Trek.com showed its support for the Black Lives Matter movement. A three minute clip of Deep Space Nine's “Far beyond the Stars” starts with a simple message: “Black Lives Matter. Black Culture Matters. Black Communities Matter. We stand in solidarity with our Black colleagues, creators, partners and audience and condemn all acts of racism, discrimination, and senseless acts of violence.” In the article accompanying the video, there is a link to Black Lives Matter's call for a sustainable transition in our communities. We have included a link to the Black Lives Matter petition below. https://blacklivesmatter.com/ Additionally, we're teaming up with trekmovie.com as #TrekkiesUnite against those same injustices and inequalities. https://trekmovie.com/2020/06/03/star-trek-websites-and-podcasts-unite-ask-trekkies-to-support-organizations-fighting-injustice/ Tonight, we cannot pretend to overlook what is happening in the United States. Tonight, we stand with our brothers and sisters fighting against injustice. This week on Episode 463 of Priority One --- We ‘Trek Out’ Akiva Goldsman’s Batman and Robin apology and what he has to say about Discovery, Bryan Fuller gets candid, and the cast of Star Trek Voyager reunite for a good cause! In Star Trek Gaming, Star Trek Online’s No-win Scenario re-emerges, and says “To Hell With Honor,” and lastly we welcome Fazri Zubair of Lucid Sight’s Crypto Space Commander! CQ: Would a season long “Year of Hell” be something you’d want to see as dedicated Star Trek Series? Akiva Goldsman Chats with Collider Last week, we told you about a Collider interview with Star Trek producer, director, and writer Akiva Goldsman. On Friday May 29th, the video of that interview was posted to Collider’s youtube channel, and it contained a slew of new information. Goldman apologized for “Batman and Robin” - it was heart-felt, but we’re not sure it was enough...BUT...he also talked a bit more about Star Trek. Strap in, because this week we’ve got AUDIO! Goldsman told Collider he was not involved with Discovery’s third season, but did have some information on what’s to come, saying “So Alex [Kurtzman] has really been deeply involved in the building out of what season three looks like and what that post-Federation future is. I have seen some of it because, you know, we all work together in the same - or we did - place with lots of Star Trek pictures on the wall and editing bays and things, you know. It seems awesome to me. It’s not a final frontier but it is a new one.” - Akiva Goldsman Goldsman also revealed an interesting tidbit about Discovery’s jump to the distant future: “We all helped build that idea, all the way back to season one. Fuller discussed the push-and-pull between Voyager’s creative team and then-Trek-Head-Rick-Berman, saying: ”I think what was interesting in the evolution of the show, which you could sense the creative struggle. And I witnessed the creative struggle when I was working there. And there was an appetite for these bigger, bolder science fiction stories. And there was a lot of resistance from Rick Berman in embracing them because he was chasing The Next Generation and was not allowing Voyager to be the show that it could be.” - Bryan Fuller But Fuller wasn’t done. He went on to describe the writer’s room’s plan to make one of Star Trek’s best two-parters - “Year of Hell” - a season long arc, and Berman’s reaction. So, we would go back to it every once in a while to remind the audience that’s the larger story. But because Deep Space Nine had made Rick Berman allergic to serialized storytelling, violently so [we did not]” - Bryan Fuller When asked why Fuller thought Deep Space Nine was able to get away with things Voyager wasn’t, Fuller pulled no punches. "Ira [Steven Behr] didn’t give a [EXPLETIVE] what Rick Berman said, and Brannon [Braga] did. Ira was like, “I don’t care, you’re wrong. This is what we’re doing and fire me if you want to.’ He was always like ‘Fire me. If you don’t like what I’m doing, fire me, but this is what we’re doing. So if you’re not behind it, then I suggest you find someone else to do my job’” - Bryan Fuller “Stars in the House” Voyager Reunion After 25 years, a reunion is in order! And that’s exactly what happened on Tuesday, May 26th. The cast of Star Trek: Voyager met via Zoom, along with Seth Rudetsky and James Wesley - hosts of “Stars in the House” - to talk Trek - but more importantly - to raise money for “The Actor’s Fund” charity. The one hour meeting - which was organized by the “Stars in the House” hosts and Voyager’s Robert Picardo - was a fun way to look at Voyager’s behind-the-scenes dynamic. Robert Duncan McNeil - portrayer of helmsman Tom Paris and He-Man pal Kevin Corrigan - talked about Kate Mulgrew’s first day on set. Mulgrew put on the jumpsuit after the departure of Geneviève Bujold: Voyager’s first Captain Janeway. "There was a lot of uncertainty, I guess, when Geneviève left. There was a lot of uncertainty. Was the show going to get made? You know, were they going to make it a male captain? Maybe they couldn’t find a female who they felt could do this. And the moment you said the first line on the bridge, personally I felt like ‘this shows going to work. We’re going to make it. Now it’s is all together.’” - Rober Duncan McNiel Mulgrew, who has expressed interest in returning to the role of Janeway, was eager to ask former co-star and current Picard actor Jeri Ryan about what’s going on with Star Trek’s newest series. "What’s the plan, now, going forward. Nobody knows anything” to which Ryan replied: "We were originally supposed to start shooting in the middle of June, but they would have had to started building the sets in the middle of May, which we can’t do So we’re just waiting. They’re hoping that we can start shooting in the beginning of fall. I don’t know.” - Jeri Ryan BLACK LIVES MATTER This week, Priority One: A Roddenberry Star Trek Podcast did not record its 463rd episode live. It has been our weekly goal to entertain and inform our listeners of the goings-on in the Star Trek Multiverse. We like to consider ourselves an enjoyable distraction to your everyday lives; but, sometimes, it’s irresponsible to ignore what is happening in the world. This week in the United States, protests and rioting erupted when George Floyd was murdered by members of the Minneapolis Police Department. Floyd’s death, centuries of oppression, systemic racism, police violence, and discrimination of Black and Brown Americans have sparked protests at home and abroad. On June 2nd, Star Trek.com showed its support for the Black Lives Matter movement. A three minute clip of Deep Space Nine’s “Far beyond the Stars” starts with a simple message: “Black Lives Matter. Tonight, we reflect on #BlackOutTuesday Tonight – and every night – we must remain attentive, we must continually educate ourselves with facts, and we must unite in solidarity to protect this nation – and others - against injustice, tyranny, and oppression. This week on Priority One --- We trek out Star Trek: Picard’s possible series longevity, Sir Patrick’s history with Star Trek, Mike McMahon’s vision for Lower Decks, and what Simon Pegg knows about the next Trek film - spoiler: it isn’t much! In Star Trek Gaming, Star Trek Online goes to Red Alert, takes on rubberbanding, and Star Trek Timelines announces its newest event! Of course, as always, before we wrap up the show, we’ll open hailing frequencies for your incoming messages Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! This Weeks Community Questions Are: CQ: Do you think Star Trek is better suited for Television, Movies, or is there a place for Trek on both? AND CQ: What’s your Star Trek Online Red Alert of choice? Why? TREK IT OUT by Jake Morgan Akiva Goldsman Talks Picard Delays are an inevitability - even more so now, during the pandemic. But with those delays comes anticipation, and sometimes opportunity. At least that’s what Star Trek Executive Producer and Oscar winning writer Akiva Goldsman thinks. Last week, Goldsman sat down with Collider to discuss Star Trek: Picard season 2, how quarantine has changed the timetable, and how the delays may be a blessing in disguise. Goldsman discussed those inevitable delays we just discussed, telling Collider ”We were to start shooting in June, which I guarantee you we will not unless the world opens tomorrow. We had broken the season, we were about halfway through the writing of it. You know, we will start as soon as we can once the world opens, you know? Prep will have to resume, and then we’ll start. We know what it is, and it’s cool.” In regards to Picard’s early “dark tone”, as well as Covid-19’s silver-lining, Goldsman explained ”I kept saying, ‘They’re reviewing the first act of a movie.’ The first act of a movie is always dark. If you stopped It’s a Wonderful Life at the bridge, it’s a really dark movie! Because fundamentally in a longform narrative, it’s a redemption story, it’s a healing story, it has to be bad at the beginning so it gets good at the end, otherwise there’s nothing to fix. So we’re in this weird world now where we create one narrative object but we dole it out bit by bit, which is fascinating. And can be kind of fun. But what you really want is to be able to refine your setups once you’ve written your payoffs… if in fact you could have the time to write 10 hours first, that would be amazing. And maybe we will.” When asked how many seasons Goldsman foresaw in Picard’s future, he responded ”I mean, I think we have discussed it as both a 3 season show, a 5 season show, a “let’s just keep going forever” show[...]Star Trek: Picard in my view will go as long as Patrick Stewart wants to do it… As I’m sure you know, he was not interested in coming back. And we did a lot of… really good collaborative story breaking and talking and you know and I think he’s particularly delighted in a good way about having come back. And we will rely on that good will until he feels he’s done.” Sir Patrick Lets Loose With CBS This Morning Speaking of Sir Patrick, the “Picard” star had a candid interview with CBS This Morning about his history with Star Trek, Picard, and his daily sonnets. When asked by "CBS This Morning" co-host Tony Dokoupil whether he always aspired to Produce a series, Stewart said ”No. I was too naïve, too new at the game of series television. And I had so much work to do. I mean[...]the first couple of years, I didn't have a life or a social life at all. We'd work a five-day week; 13-, 14-, sometimes 15-hour days, especially towards the end of the week. And Saturday morning, I would allow myself a little sleep in. And then I would do my own laundry, which by the way, I still do. It's an obsession with me.” Stewart was frank about his early days on the TNG set, saying /”I lectured my fellow cast members about some of the fooling around that was going on on the set, and the games that they were playing and the singing and the jokes and the ruining shots. And there was this horrible silence. And it was Denise Crosby who said to me, 'Trick, come on, we gotta have some fun!' And I said, 'We are not here to have fun.' I said that! And that became, you know, a legendary quote, as I progressively got sillier and sillier as the series wore on.” Finally, in regards to Stewart’s charming daily sonnets, Sir Patrick said ”I had no idea what I was saying or what it meant. But there was something in the language” Mike McMahon Tells Us Something About Lower Decks Star Trek’s first animated series since the 70’s is set to air this year, and the buzz is starting to form around the upcoming “Lower Decks”. In the interview from our first story, Akiva Goldsman said ”Lower Decks] literally couldn’t seem funnier to me”. But what does series showrunner and Star Trek super-fan Mike McMahon think? We’re glad you asked! McMahon discussed the series with Slashfilm this week, explaining the premise and structure of the show ”If you’re watching Lower Decks, you’re getting a full Star Trek episode from the perspective of people who are having their own social and emotional stories and their own sci-fi stories, but they just aren’t on the bridge. They don’t have the information the bridge is getting, and they don’t have the responsibility.” McMahon, who was the showrunner on the popular “Rick and Morty”, explained how Lower Decks isn’t a Star Trek skinned version of his previous show ”A big thing that was important to me was figuring out how do we comedically access these characters. How can these characters be funny and not break Star Trek? You can’t have a Morty [from Rick and Morty] in Star Trek. You can’t just have a stupid person in Starfleet, otherwise it breaks the aspirational paradigm of what humanity is like in Starfleet. So our leads are foils for each other, but they’re very much ingrained in Star Trek.” McMahon gave a little flavor to the series main characters, explaining Ensign Beckett Mariner as ”kind of like Captain Kirk if Kirk wasn’t a captain and didn’t have the power. Kirk would follow his gut, and she followers her gut.” and Ensign Brad Boimler as /”so by-the-book and so burdened by following the rules that he can’t follow his gut.” Simon Pegg Tells Us Nothing About Star Trek IV Oh Simon Pegg. How sick you must be of answering questions about Star Trek. But bless your heart - you keep doing it. This week, Collider had the honor of asking Pegg about a possible upcoming movie that he knows very little about. Pegg was asked what he and his castmates knew about an upcoming film, to which he replied ”If [Paramount says], ‘We’d like to do another movie,’ I’m sure we’ll all jump at the chance. I miss those guys, and I love making those films. But I just don’t know. Noah Hawley’s project has been mentioned, and maybe that will happen. I don’t know anything about that. So yeah, I’m as in the dark as everyone else, I’m in the same boat as you guys.” Pegg discussed the more “niche” audience of Trek, when compared to - say - the Marvel Universe, and offered ”the obvious thing to do would be to not go for that massive spectacle, go for something a little bit more restrained in the vein of the original series. Yes, that would be a brilliant thing to do, and I’m sure it probably has been discussed… You specialize a little bit more.” Finally, Pegg may have talked himself out of future Star Trek work, telling Collider ”Maybe TV is a better place for [Star Trek] now. Television has evolved so much. It’s become something which is very much a contemporary, a peer of cinema. It’s simply viewed in a different way. It isn’t a reduced scope anymore. You can still do masses of interesting things, and it can still look modern and not inexpensive. Maybe television is a better format for Star Trek. That’s where it started, you know.” Star Trek Online and Gaming News by Shane Hoover PC: All the Red Alerts All the Red Alerts, all the Red Alerts All the Red Alerts, all the Red Alerts All the Red Alerts, all the Red Alerts All the Red Alerts, now put your shields up If Operation Delta Rising, the Draanuur colony, and the Khitomer-class battlecruiser have taught us anything, it’s the value of collaboration across different cultures towards our common goals. However our less-pleasant galactic neighbors have taken the hint, and are launching a coordinated multi-front offensive across the galaxy. It’s teamwork that makes the existential threat work, I guess. From May 28th at 8 AM Pacific to June 4th at 10 AM Pacific, PC captains will be able to play all five Red Alert Task Force Operations: Borg Red Alert Elachi Red Alert Tholian Red Alert Tzenkethi Red Alert Nakuhl Red Alert Players will receive the normal rewards for each playthrough, and each day’s first completed Red Alert will also grant Daily Event Progress on their account. After receiving five daily progress token players will be able to claim either a Universal Tech Upgrade or Specialization Point grand prize for their account. The grand prize can also be purchased outright on a prorated scale, relative to daily progress made in the event. Players who complete a Red Alert TFO each day after getting the grand prize will receive a dilithium ore bonus, starting at 8,000 and increasing by 1,000 each day. So that there’s no confusion, captains, I want to stress: THERE. ARE. FIVE. ALERTS. Console: Eyyyy, La Sirena From June 2nd at 8 AM Pacific to June 23rd at 10 Pacific, captains on console will have another crack at simultaneous Infinity R&D and Duty Officer Promotions. As usual, during the promotion R&D Packs and Duty Officer Packs purchased from the C-Store and opened will grant either an additional 10 Lobi Crystals or a Special Requisition Choice Pack - Tier 6 Promotional Ship Choice Pack. And this time a new ship is making its console debut in the Ship Choice Pack—the contentiously-named La Sirena T6 Heavy Raider, as seen in Star Trek: Picard. Console: To Hell With Honor Also coming to consoles, from June 2nd through June 23rd, players can assault J’Ula’s moon based shipyards in the “To Hell With Honor” Featured TFO Event. Just like it was on PC, this is a unique TFO featuring space combat over a moon surface map. Destroy J’Ula’s ships before they can join her fleet, and deal with unexpected guests provoked by J’Ula’s Mycelial weapon technology. This featured TFO is part two of the four part Event Campaign on consoles, with each day’s completion rewarding 50 Event Campaign progress points. To see the event rewards, like the DOT-7 Drones last seen on Short Treks, follow the link to STO’s blog in our show notes. Rubberbanding Survey Picture this: you’re tearing across the Park in the Dyson Ground Battlezone like, or because, there won’t be a tomorrow. The Voth are almost done collecting Omega particles, and you’re the only one who can stop them. The V-Rex is in sight, you ready your Orbital Strike—and suddenly you’re 50 meters away, running over the same patch of grass again. And again. And again. And scene. You, mon capitan, have been rubberbanded. Player complaints about lagging in MMOs are as old as MMOs themselves. However Star Trek Online has *allegedly* been more badly-affected than usual recently. On Monday the 25th, the official Star Trek Online Twitter account shared a link to a SurveyMonkey poll, asking players to describe their recent experiences. The poll includes your general geographic location, proxy usage, ISP, and in-game locations you find particularly troublesome. Link in the show notes. PRIORITY ONE ARMADA NEWS Join us for TFO Thursday - each Thursday we team up with other Armada members to earn marks and dilithium. Epsilon Fleet - another Tier V upgrade almost ready to go on cooldown. OTHER GAMING NEWS Star Trek Timelines Events From Thursday May 28 at noon ET to June 1 at noon ET, Star Trek Timelines will feature the Blundering Terror Galaxy Event for the Federation, Ferengi Alliance, and Borg factions. No details for the event narrative have been released but we do have the following key details. The 4-star Professor Scott--Great Scott! [throw toilet paper roll]--will be returning as a featured crew member, joined by the new 5-star crew member Determined Paris and 4-star Grebnedlog. Grebnedlog, for those whose rubber bands may be broken, is the captain of the Pakled ship in the TNG episode "Samaritan Snare." As always, event crew members grant the highest bonuses. However variants of Tom Paris, Montgomery Scott, and crew members with the Thief trait will also make you strong and make your Faction go. The winning Faction may not attain the 24th level of awareness, but they will receive a new 5-star Kira-variant crew member. 20th century science fiction author Kay Eaton, seen in the DS9 episode "Far Beyond the Stars," will be a featured crew member in the next event starting on 06/04.

And that became, you know, a legendary quote, as I progressively got sillier and sillier as the series wore on.” Finally, in regards to Stewart's charming daily sonnets, Sir Patrick said ”I had no idea what I was saying or what it meant. But there was something in the language” Mike McMahon Tells Us Something About Lower Decks Star Trek's first animated series since the 70's is set to air this year, and the buzz is starting to form around the upcoming “Lower Decks”. In the interview from our first story, Akiva Goldsman said ”Lower Decks] literally couldn't seem funnier to me”. But what does series showrunner and Star Trek super-fan Mike McMahon think? We're glad you asked! McMahon discussed the series with Slashfilm this week, explaining the premise and structure of the show ”If you're watching Lower Decks, you're getting a full Star Trek episode from the perspective of people who are having their own social and emotional stories and their own sci-fi stories, but they just aren't on the bridge. They don't have the information the bridge is getting, and they don't have the responsibility.” McMahon, who was the showrunner on the popular “Rick and Morty”, explained how Lower Decks isn't a Star Trek skinned version of his previous show ”A big thing that was important to me was figuring out how do we comedically access these characters. How can these characters be funny and not break Star Trek? You can't have a Morty [from Rick and Morty] in Star Trek. You can't just have a stupid person in Starfleet, otherwise it breaks the aspirational paradigm of what humanity is like in Starfleet. So our leads are foils for each other, but they're very much ingrained in Star Trek.” McMahon gave a little flavor to the series main characters, explaining Ensign Beckett Mariner as ”kind of like Captain Kirk if Kirk wasn't a captain and didn't have the power. Kirk would follow his gut, and she followers her gut.” and Ensign Brad Boimler as /”so by-the-book and so burdened by following the rules that he can't follow his gut.” Simon Pegg Tells Us Nothing About Star Trek IV Oh Simon Pegg. How sick you must be of answering questions about Star Trek. But bless your heart - you keep doing it. This week, Collider had the honor of asking Pegg about a possible upcoming movie that he knows very little about. Pegg was asked what he and his castmates knew about an upcoming film, to which he replied ”If [Paramount says], ‘We'd like to do another movie,' I'm sure we'll all jump at the chance. I miss those guys, and I love making those films. But I just don't know. Noah Hawley's project has been mentioned, and maybe that will happen. I don't know anything about that. So yeah, I'm as in the dark as everyone else, I'm in the same boat as you guys.” Pegg discussed the more “niche” audience of Trek, when compared to - say - the Marvel Universe, and offered ”the obvious thing to do would be to not go for that massive spectacle, go for something a little bit more restrained in the vein of the original series. Yes, that would be a brilliant thing to do, and I'm sure it probably has been discussed… You specialize a little bit more.” Finally, Pegg may have talked himself out of future Star Trek work, telling Collider ”Maybe TV is a better place for [Star Trek] now. Television has evolved so much. It's become something which is very much a contemporary, a peer of cinema. It's simply viewed in a different way. It isn't a reduced scope anymore. You can still do masses of interesting things, and it can still look modern and not inexpensive. Maybe television is a better format for Star Trek. That's where it started, you know.” Star Trek Online and Gaming News by Shane Hoover PC: All the Red Alerts All the Red Alerts, all the Red Alerts All the Red Alerts, all the Red Alerts All the Red Alerts, all the Red Alerts All the Red Alerts, now put your shields up If Operation Delta Rising, the Draanuur colony, and the Khitomer-class battlecruiser have taught us anything, it's the value of collaboration across different cultures towards our common goals. However our less-pleasant galactic neighbors have taken the hint, and are launching a coordinated multi-front offensive across the galaxy. It's teamwork that makes the existential threat work, I guess. From May 28th at 8 AM Pacific to June 4th at 10 AM Pacific, PC captains will be able to play all five Red Alert Task Force Operations: Borg Red Alert Elachi Red Alert Tholian Red Alert Tzenkethi Red Alert Nakuhl Red Alert Players will receive the normal rewards for each playthrough, and each day's first completed Red Alert will also grant Daily Event Progress on their account. So that there's no confusion, captains, I want to stress: THERE. ARE. FIVE. Console: To Hell With Honor Also coming to consoles, from June 2nd through June 23rd, players can assault J'Ula's moon based shipyards in the “To Hell With Honor” Featured TFO Event. Just like it was on PC, this is a unique TFO featuring space combat over a moon surface map. Destroy J'Ula's ships before they can join her fleet, and deal with unexpected guests provoked by J'Ula's Mycelial weapon technology. This featured TFO is part two of the four part Event Campaign on consoles, with each day's completion rewarding 50 Event Campaign progress points. To see the event rewards, like the DOT-7 Drones last seen on Short Treks, follow the link to STO's blog in our show notes. Rubberbanding Survey Picture this: you're tearing across the Park in the Dyson Ground Battlezone like, or because, there won't be a tomorrow. The Voth are almost done collecting Omega particles, and you're the only one who can stop them. The V-Rex is in sight, you ready your Orbital Strike—and suddenly you're 50 meters away, running over the same patch of grass again. And again. And again.
This week on Priority One --- We 'Trek Out' the announcement of Star Trek: “Strange New Worlds” and Akiva Goldsman already has some comments; we learn how filming could restart during the pandemic, and Sir Patrick shares some thoughts on Picard! In Star Trek Gaming, Star Trek Online’s Mudd’s Market floods us with some insanely expensive choices…. And our featured presentation is a sit down with Star Trek’s Jonathan Del Arco! Of course, as always, before we wrap up the show, we’ll open hailing frequencies for your incoming messages Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! This Weeks Community Questions Are: CQ: Would you like to see Jeffery Combs play Dr. Boyce? Why or why not? AND CQ: Are you interested in the new Mudd’s Market bundle? What ships would you choose? TREK IT OUT by Jake Morgan On Friday May 15th, ViacomCBS made the OFFICIAL announcement that Anson Mount’s Christopher Pike would be getting his own series. Along with a brief description of the upcoming show, titled “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds”, we were treated to a video featuring the show's three stars - the aforementioned Mount, Ethan Peck, and Rebecca Romijn. In the video, the trio thanked fans for their continued support, and Mount promised ”We’re going to get to work on a classic Star Trek show that deals with optimism and the future. And I guess there’s only one more thing to say - Hit It” The series Executive Producers include Alex Kurtzman, Akiva Goldsman, Jenny Lumet, Henry Alonso Myers, Heather Kadin, and our very own Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth! The premiere’s story was hashed out by Alex Kurtzman, Akiva Goldsman, and Jenny Lumet, and Goldsman gets the screenplay credit. Star Trek “Captain” Alex Kurtzman said in a release ”When we said we heard the fans’ outpouring of love for Pike, Number One and Spock when they boarded Star Trek: Discovery last season, we meant it. These iconic characters have a deep history in Star Trek canon, yet so much of their stories has yet to be told. With Akiva and Henry at the helm, the Enterprise, its crew and its fans are in for an extraordinary journey to new frontiers in the Star Trek universe.” No release date was announced, but the project was given a “series order”, and it sounds like the premiere script is ready to go. WE’RE GETTING A PIKE SERIES!!! Akiva Goldsman With Variety Discussing “Strange New Worlds” Did you hear we’re getting a new Star Trek series? One of the architects of the upcoming “Strange New Worlds”, Akiva Goldsman, sat down with Variety to talk a bit more about the project. Goldsman’s goal is to hew closer to The Original Series ”We’re going to try to harken back to some classical ‘Trek’ values, to be optimistic, and to be more episodic. Obviously, we will take advantage of the serialized nature of character and story building. But I think our plots will be more closed-ended than you’ve seen in either ‘Discovery’ or ‘Picard.”. Goldsman continued ”I imagine it to be closer to the original series than even ‘DS9,'. We can really tell closed-ended stories. We can find ourselves in episodes that are tonally of a piece.” But Goldsman clarified that this won’t be EXACTLY like the episodic adventures of years past, telling Variety ”I think one thing that we always struggled with [as fans] was that Kirk is heartbroken at the loss of Edith Keeler in ‘The City on the Edge of Forever’ and has to be just fine the next week. I think what we would want to do is keep the characters having moved through and recognizing the experiences they’ve had in previous episodes, but to be able to tell contained, episodic stories.” Could Jeffery Combs Show Up in “Strange New Worlds” Imagine - if you dare - not only getting “Strange New Worlds”, but also getting the incomparable Jeffrey Combs as part of the crew. Star Trek twitter presence “Andorian Soup” has dared to imagine just that. On May 16th, Andorian Soup - whose avatar is Shran from Star Trek: Enterprise - posted a side-by-side photo of Jeffrey Combs and John Hoyt, the actor who played ship physician and Pike confidant Dr. Phillip Boyce in “The Cage”. The resemblance between the two actors is certainly undeniable. So what are the chances that the prolific actor could play the wise Doctor? According to Combs, not high. Replying to Andorian Soup’s Twitter post, Combs himself said ”Thank you. Nice thought, but the chasm between what fans want and what the studios want make the chances of it happening slim to none.... and Slim left town.”. That doesn’t mean the Star Trek veteran wouldn’t be interested. When asked if he’d be open to the possibility, Combs replied ”Of course. I love Star Trek. Star Trek is life.” Patrick Stewart Teases Picard Season 2 Though we are obviously excited for the newly announced “Strange New Worlds”, there were other interesting Trek nuggets for our proverbial dipping that did not include Pike and the gang. This week, Sir Patrick Stewart sat down with Gold Derby to discuss his experience with HIS Trek offering, Star Trek: Picard. Sir Patrick reiterated his initial hesitation for playing the legendary Captain again, but revealed that he thought season 1 may be his last time doing so. Stewart recalled reading the script for the series finale, saying ”the writers had been a little bit undercover about that aspect of how series one was going to end. I learned it from reading the script, and when I saw that Picard collapsed and died when he was on that alien planet, I thought, ‘Oh my lord, I’m being written out of the show?” Instead, Picard lives on with an “artificial life inside me, but not a subservient, cruel one like the Borg. Well, we shall see. We don’t know how Picard will with this new condition that has become part of his life.” Stewart also teased what’s to come in Season 2, telling Gold Derby ”There are startling events predicted in Season 2. I’m so excited about them, because it is taking season one from where we were, we aren’t going to be covering the same ground. And it’s going to be, I think, extraordinary. I’m very excited about it.” Star Trek Online and Gaming News by Shane Hoover Mudd Plays With Time Again… Again? Well it’s a slow news week for Star Trek gaming, but there’s one very big talking point from Star Trek Online! In a STO News blog posted May 19th, Ambassador Kael announced the latest new offerings from Mudd’s Market. And, according to the blog itself, “it’s one of our craziest bundles ever!” In the usual Mudd’s Market style, the bundle is listed with two “prices”. There’s the so-called regular price, which is 29,500 Zen, or nearly $300 in cash. Then there’s the sale price, at which the bundle is available to players until 5/26, which is 14,750 Zen, or nearly $150 in cash. So what does that significant investment get you? That’s where this bundle gets really interesting. Because, unlike other Mudd’s Market offerings, this bundle is all about choices. You get to choose THREE of these six items: Amarie-class Heavy Escort [T6] Temporal Science Vessel [T6] - Account-wide reclaim of faction-appropriate ship. Temporal Destroyer [T6] - Account-wide reclaim of faction-appropriate ship. 2 Zen Store T6 ship 100% off coupons 10x Ultimate Tech Upgrades A Phoenix pack Epic prize token which will unlock a character-locked ship So when you’ve purchased the bundle and claimed your three choices, any ships chosen will be forever reclaimable on all of your characters. You can also purchase the bundle as many times as you want. So, purchasing the bundle twice could get you all six choices. And subsequent purchases of the bundle after that would get you more T6 ship coupons, Ultimate Tech Upgrades, and Epic Phoenix prize tokens. That is, you know, if you wanted to spend $450 or more on STO. STO’s Groupees Fundraiser We’ve already covered Star Trek Online’s charity fundraiser for Pop Culture Hero Coalition and United Way Bay Area, but it’s worth mentioning two updates tweeted this week to the game’s Twitter account. First, they’ve restocked the $10 bundles, so if you missed out before, now’s your chance. Second, the tweet declared that the Groupees bundles have raised nearly $110,000 for the two charities. So, a big congratulations to Star Trek Online, and to its players, for their efforts!

This week on Priority One --- DS9 & Voyager get an HD remastering (sorta); We learn what S2 of Picard won't be about; First Contact giveaways and events are still going strong in Star Trek Online while on the mobile platforms, Timelines and Starfleet Command get some interesting updates; then, we're pleased to have with us Star Trek TNG's Lt. Jae --- Tracee Lee Cocco! Of course, as always, before we wrap up the show, we'll open hailing frequencies for your incoming messages Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! This Weeks Community Questions Are: CQ: How impressed are you with the A.I. update to DS9 and Voyager. Does it make you pine for a HD release of both series? AND CQ: Will you be getting your hands on the D'Quarka?... the new T6 D'Kora Update. TREK IT OUT by Elio LLeo DS9 & Voyager get a Hi-Def Treatment When Star Trek The Original Series and The Next Generation were given the hi-def treatment --- breathing new life into both series in stunning high-definition -- it didn't take long for fans to start asking… when are we getting DS9 and Voyager?! Unfortunately, that wish might never be granted --- at least not according to Robert Meyer Burnett -- the writer, director, producer and editor of the bonus features included with The Next Generation and Enterprise Blu-ray releases. You see, back in 2017, Burnett went on record to explain that remastering these series is expensive and time consuming -- but, mostly expensive… and the return on investment wouldn't be the same as with the other - more popular - series. However, a couple of fans took it upon themselves to apply some machine learning and digitally enhance several scenes from DS9 and Voyager into 4K Resolution. Last year, a fan that goes by CaptRobau uploaded a couple of comparison videos with scenes from DS9. Now, Billy Reichard ran a similar process to a couple of scenes from Voyager. Upgrade your Boring Zoom backgrounds w/ wild environments While we're on the topic of technical advancements, COVID-19 has disrupted our daily lives in an unprecedented way. Many of us are adjusting to “Work From Home” scenarios and might even find themselves sitting in front of their laptops using a program like Zoom for work meetings… Or podcast production…. Well, if you happen to use Zoom for work, why not liven up that boring bedroom background with something more… Stellar? Via twitter, Star Trek released a few images that can be imported into Zoom and configured to be a virtual background! Now, Zoom already has this feature built in with some default backgrounds but, you can import these new images to set a more colorful stage! Why not set yourself in Chateu Picard? Or in a corridor aboard the Discovery? Either way, these are definitely a fun way to liven up those boring Zoom meetings… which could have probably still been addressed in an email… just sayin' Picard S2 and A Star Trek Film Now that Picard has wrapped up it's first season, the big question on everyone's mind is --- what's coming in Season 2. Although Chabon and Goldsman have explained that ideas are starting to formulate, Sir PatStew can tell you what it won't be about… Pandemics. Now - although Sir Patrick has gone on record explaining his goals for Season 1 of Picard and how contemporary issues affected the themes of the first season -- he doesn't believe tackling a pandemic storyline would be appropriate explaining “This is a disturbing and frightening and sad time for many thousands of people… It is too sensitive, too upsetting, too frightening, I think.” Russo & Hawley While we're on the topic of future productions, Star Trek Picard's composer - Jeff Russo - chatted with flickeringmyth.com to talk about his involvement with the Star Trek Franchise…. Including his connection to Noah Hawley --- who is supposed to take the director's chair on the next Star Trek Film. The question --- has Russo spoken to Halwey about the next film. His reply “I have! We have spoken about it, and we've talked what he is going to want from a musical perspective, and how to approach it, and what the story is looking like it's going to be, which is extremely exciting to me… He's one to definitely talk about music with me, so when he called to say that his film was in the works, I was extremely excited.” Roddenberry Impact Awards Calling all Television Content creators! The Roddenberry Foundation and social impact agency Propper Daley's A Day of Unreasonable Conversation have teamed up for this year's Roddenberry Impact Awards. Ten awards of $10,000 will “be granted to television content creators who are committed to - and have innovative ideas and approaches for - reimagining the processes for writing and telling stories that better represent the diversity of people, thought, and expression throughout society. Those of you interested in applying have until May 8, 2020 at 5pm PT --- and remember --- the goal of the event is to //quote// unlock social progress through the power of stories //end quote//. This week on Priority One --- DS9 & Voyager get an HD remastering (sorta); We learn what S2 of Picard won’t be about; First Contact giveaways and events are still going strong in Star Trek Online while on the mobile platforms, Timelines and Starfleet Command get some interesting updates; then, we’re pleased to have with us Star Trek TNG’s Lt. Jae --- Tracee Lee Cocco! Of course, as always, before we wrap up the show, we’ll open hailing frequencies for your incoming messages Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! This Weeks Community Questions Are: CQ: How impressed are you with the A.I. update to DS9 and Voyager. Does it make you pine for a HD release of both series? AND CQ: Will you be getting your hands on the D’Quarka?... the new T6 D’Kora Update. TREK IT OUT by Elio LLeo DS9 & Voyager get a Hi-Def Treatment When Star Trek The Original Series and The Next Generation were given the hi-def treatment --- breathing new life into both series in stunning high-definition -- it didn’t take long for fans to start asking… when are we getting DS9 and Voyager?! Unfortunately, that wish might never be granted --- at least not according to Robert Meyer Burnett -- the writer, director, producer and editor of the bonus features included with The Next Generation and Enterprise Blu-ray releases. You see, back in 2017, Burnett went on record to explain that remastering these series is expensive and time consuming -- but, mostly expensive… and the return on investment wouldn’t be the same as with the other - more popular - series. Upgrade your Boring Zoom backgrounds w/ wild environments While we’re on the topic of technical advancements, COVID-19 has disrupted our daily lives in an unprecedented way. Either way, these are definitely a fun way to liven up those boring Zoom meetings… which could have probably still been addressed in an email… just sayin’ Picard S2 and A Star Trek Film Now that Picard has wrapped up it’s first season, the big question on everyone’s mind is --- what’s coming in Season 2. Although Chabon and Goldsman have explained that ideas are starting to formulate, Sir PatStew can tell you what it won’t be about… Pandemics. Now - although Sir Patrick has gone on record explaining his goals for Season 1 of Picard and how contemporary issues affected the themes of the first season -- he doesn’t believe tackling a pandemic storyline would be appropriate explaining “This is a disturbing and frightening and sad time for many thousands of people… It is too sensitive, too upsetting, too frightening, I think.” Russo & Hawley While we’re on the topic of future productions, Star Trek Picard’s composer - Jeff Russo - chatted with flickeringmyth.com to talk about his involvement with the Star Trek Franchise…. Including his connection to Noah Hawley --- who is supposed to take the director’s chair on the next Star Trek Film. The question --- has Russo spoken to Halwey about the next film. His reply “I have! We have spoken about it, and we’ve talked what he is going to want from a musical perspective, and how to approach it, and what the story is looking like it’s going to be, which is extremely exciting to me… He’s one to definitely talk about music with me, so when he called to say that his film was in the works, I was extremely excited.” Roddenberry Impact Awards Calling all Television Content creators! The Roddenberry Foundation and social impact agency Propper Daley’s A Day of Unreasonable Conversation have teamed up for this year’s Roddenberry Impact Awards. This week on Priority One --- Season 1 of Star Trek Picard is over and now the post-season interviews are all over the net -- including interviews with the showrunners; in Star Trek Online, First Contact Day is around the corner and STO has started teasing event information -- we’re also joined by Star Trek Online’s Senior Content Designer, Ryon Levitt to chat about creating engaging missions for players… And of course -- in On Screen, we dive into the two-part finale of Star Trek Picard, Season 1. Of course, as always, before we wrap up the show, we’ll open hailing frequencies for your incoming messages Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! This Weeks Community Questions Are: CQ: Would you be excited to see Brent Spiner return as a Soong? AND CQ: Will you be getting your hands on the D’Quarka?... the new T6 D’Kora Update. TREK IT OUT by Jake Morgan Goldsman and Chabon Talk Picard “Star Trek: Picard” aired its final episode of season 1, “Et in Arcadia Ego: Part 2”, last week. We’ll get into what took place on Screen later in the show, but for now let’s have a look behind the scenes. The Hollywood Reporter chatted up Picard series one showrunner Michael Chabon and Executive Producer Akiva Goldsman to hear more from the men behind the curtain. Be warned, spoilers incoming. The pair cleared up confusion about the original plan for the length of Picard’s run, with Chabon saying ”We didn't decide to do this to the character from a place of we didn't want to have future seasons or anything like that. From the original plan for the show, even though our original outline changed significantly to what you eventually saw, the plan — and Sir Patrick's plan from the beginning — was ‘let's tell more stories with Picard.’” Chabon discussed the serialization of Picard, and how it is received by Star Trek fans, saying "You really have to ‘bingewatch' the whole thing in ten episodes. And it's a tricky thing because of the whole episodic versus serialized way we watch things, and how especially Star Trek audiences are sort of trained [to expect] more of that episodic, mission-of-the-week structure. And that's not what this show is." Finally, Chabon touched on the challenges of writing Picard Season 2, saying "First, it's got to be good, right? It has to be focused on Picard but have room for all the other characters. It's never going to be just a show about the crew of a starship that's part of Starfleet and everyone's wearing uniforms and they're flying around, encountering alien life and weird planets. Those are the challenges we face going into season two, and I'm so excited about the story we've come up with." Akiva Goldsman WAS there, we promise. To read some of what he had to say, as well as Chabon’s thoughts on bringing back Jeri Ryan, trek out the show notes. He was there. Variety Talks with Michael Chabon While we promise there was a quote from Akiva Goldsman in the previous article, we guaranteed there isn’t any to follow. Chabon soloed with Variety and discussed Star Trek feedback, serialization, and the subtle inclusion of the LGBTQ community in Picard Chabon told Variety that he read the conversations, critiques, and reviews of Star Trek - both new and old. He even went so far as to look up old Usenet boards focused on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Voyager, and was surprised to learn that fan reaction wasn’t so dissimilar thirty years ago. There was a certain demographic Chabon didn’t mind upsetting //QUOTE//”To the extent that I was aware of the kind of toxic fandom, the anti-SJW, you know, sad little corner of fandom — you just disregard that. Sometimes you’re motivated to have things simply because it’s possibly going to piss off or provoke people who seem to have missed the memo about just what exactly “Star Trek” is and always has been all about.”//END QUOTE// When considering fan discomfort in a darker Star Trek tone, and more broadly serialization, Chabon said //QUOTE//”It’s a little weird for me, too. [...] I can feel this deep wiring in my brain that wants “Star Trek” to be episodic. I can remember how odd it felt watching those serialized episodes of “Deep Space Nine.” I wasn’t entirely sure I liked it then, either. It was so far ahead of its time. [...] It felt appropriate, I respected it, and I understood it — and it made me uncomfortable as a “Star Trek” fan.”//END QUOTE// Chabon also discussed a perceived lack of LGBTQ inclusion in Star Trek Picard, indicating it WAS there if you looked close enough //QUOTE//”We’re doing it in an organic way — what feels organic to me. [...] In Raffi’s scene where she calls into Starfleet to try to get access for them to the Artifact [...], the implication is there too in their relationship. But she doesn’t ever say, “I’m going to call this woman that I used to go out with,” and she doesn’t say, “Hey, remember me. I used to be your girlfriend.”//END QUOTE// This article is LONG, and offers insight into Chabon’s least favorite social media outlet, what Picard looks like going into season 2, and how Chabon is handling the pandemic. Follow the link in our show notes to trek it out. Patrick Stewart Recalls Uniform Mishaps What’s Picard without Picard? The Hollywood Reporter sat down with the Picard portrayer and Executive Producer - Sir Patrick Stewart - to talk Picard, uniforms, and Kirk? In regards to filming the poignant final meeting of Picard and Data in “Et in Arcadia Ego: Part 2”, Stewart said "I was looking forward to it, not just because I get to work with my friend Brent (Spiner) again, but because the content of the scene was so serious, given that Picard — he knew this would probably be the last time he would ever see his friend." The interview took a decidedly reminiscent tone when Stewart recalled being “Quite cross” when refused one of his uniform costumes following the filming of TNG’s “All Good Things”, but was later gifted the threads on a late night talk show appearance. Stewart jests "I often tease my wife that I will one day wake her up one morning wearing that uniform, since she grew up watching The Next Generation with her family" Sir Patrick ends the interview recalling the filming of Kirk’s death scene in Star Trek: Generations "It was an extremely potent moment, I have to say. Working with Bill, and being present when Captain Kirk finally came to an end. It was a great privilege." Spiner is done as Data What would Picard be without Data...oh...right. Well - This week, TV Guide interviewed the 71-year old Spiner to talk his many roles in Star Trek Spiner had glowing things to say about his last meeting with Sir Patrick’s Picard, telling TV Guide ”I think there's something really profound about what Michael [Chabon] wrote for Data to say about those things that are fleeting, that mortality is what makes us human, and those things that mean the most to us never last forever. [...] It felt very much like we were doing Next Generation. There was something very familiar about it and kind of natural that we should be sitting there having that conversation.” Spiner, who has said on countless occasions that he would not reprise his role as Data, repeated that sentiment ”I wouldn't really entertain the idea of doing it again because I just don't think it would be realistic. So it seemed right to me to give him this more gentle sendoff, and it seemed right to me in the context of the entire season of Picard and what Picard himself had been experiencing because of the loss of Data. I think it allows him to feel okay about it too. So it seemed like the right thing to do.” That doesn’t mean that Spiner is done with Star Trek though. When asked about possibly portraying Alton Soong again, Spiner said ”Absolutely. I love working with all of the people on the show. The new cast is fantastic. Obviously, to still be working with Patrick is a dream. Now there's a character that could conceivably go on and continue, so of course I'd love to.” Star Trek Online and Gaming News by Shane Hoover First Contact Day: Now With More Borg! Doctor Sleep is a 2019 American psychological horror film based on the 2013 novel of the same name by Stephen King, which is a sequel to King's 1977 novel The Shining. The film, set several decades after the events of The Shining, combines elements of the 1977 novel and its 1980 film adaptation of the same name directed by Stanley Kubrick. Doctor Sleep is written, directed, and edited by Mike Flanagan. It stars Ewan McGregor as Dan Torrance, a man with psychic abilities who struggles with childhood trauma. The film also stars Rebecca Ferguson and Kyliegh Curran in her feature film debut. Carl Lumbly, Zahn McClarnon, Emily Alyn Lind, Bruce Greenwood, Jocelin Donahue, Alex Essoe, and Cliff Curtis also feature in supporting roles. The character Danny Torrance first appeared in King's novel and Kubrick's adaptation as a child with psychic abilities called "the shining". The novel Doctor Sleep and its film adaptation feature Dan Torrance as an adult. Flanagan said that the film Doctor Sleep is an adaptation of King's novel but that it would also exist "in the same cinematic universe" as Kubrick's The Shining, thus making the film not only an adaptation of a sequel, but a sequel in and of itself. The director said he made an effort to reconcile the differences between The Shining novel and film. Warner Bros. Pictures began developing a film adaptation shortly after Doctor Sleep was published in 2013. Writer-producer Akiva Goldsman wrote a script, but the studio did not secure a budget for the film until the box-office success of its 2017 horror film It, also based on a novel by King. Flanagan was hired to rewrite Goldsman's script and direct the film. Filming began in September 2018 in the state of Georgia, including Atlanta and the surrounding area, and concluded in December 2018. Doctor Sleep premiered in Europe theaters on October 31, 2019 and is scheduled to be released in the United States on November 8, 2019, by Warner Bros. Pictures. The film received generally positive reviews from critics, with many praising the performances of McGregor, Curran and Ferguson, atmosphere, musical score and faithfulness to the novel and Kubrick's 1980 film. -------------------- FOLLOW US -------------------- NADIA SAWALHA & FAMILY https://www.instagram.com/nadiasawalhaandfamily.com http://www.twitter.com/nadiasawalha For more movie news follow: POPCORN JUNKIES: https://www.instagram.com/thepopcornjunkies ------------------------------------ BUSINESS ENQUIRIES ------------------------------------ For business enquiries contact: michelle@doghouse-media.co.uk --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/popcorn-junkies/message

Hsoted by Kari Lane, Frank Moran, and Christian Bladt, the team will be breaking down each episode of Star Trek Discovery during the seasons, and in the off time covering classic episodes and topics related to the Star Trek Universe year round!ABOUT STAR TREK DISCOVERY:Star Trek: Discovery is an American television series created for CBS All Access by Bryan Fuller and Alex Kurtzman. It is the first series developed specifically for that service, and the first Star Trek series since Star Trek: Enterprise concluded in 2005. Set roughly a decade before the events of the original Star Trek series and separate from the timeline of the concurrent feature films, Discovery explores the Federation–Klingon cold war while following the crew of the USS Discovery. Gretchen J. Berg and Aaron Harberts serve as showrunners on the series, with producing support from Akiva Goldsman.Sonequa Martin-Green stars as Michael Burnham, the first officer of the USS Shenzhou and later the USS Discovery. The new series was announced in November 2015, and Fuller joined as showrunner the next February. In addition to Fuller and Kurtzman, who wrote for previous Star Trek series and films, respectively, the crew includes several other previous Star Trek creatives. Fuller wanted to make an anthology series, beginning with a prequel season to the original series, but CBS asked that he make a single serialized show first. In October 2016, after further disagreements with CBS and struggles with other commitments, Fuller left the series. Berg and Harberts took over day-to-day production using a mythology and broad story arc established by Fuller, while Goldsman joined then as support. The production put emphasis on carrying on the legacy of the previous series, including making efforts to feature a diverse cast. The values and designs of the Federation were updated for the series, but were expected to evolve towards those of the original series throughout Discovery's run. The show also heavily features the Klingon species, with the intent of exploring the central conflict from both perspectives. The Klingons were redesigned for the series, with influence from their previous appearances, the original inspirations for the species, and the novel The Final Reflection, as well as research on biology and evolution. The Klingon language is also extensively used. Hsoted by Kari Lane, Frank Moran, and Christian Bladt, the team will be breaking down each episode of Star Trek Discovery during the seasons, and in the off time covering classic episodes and topics related to the Star Trek Universe year round! ABOUT STAR TREK DISCOVERY: Star Trek: Discovery is an American television series created for CBS All Access by Bryan Fuller and Alex Kurtzman. Gretchen J. Berg and Aaron Harberts serve as showrunners on the series, with producing support from Akiva Goldsman. Sonequa Martin-Green stars as Michael Burnham, the first officer of the USS Shenzhou and later the USS Discovery. Discovery is filming in Toronto, and has filmed on location in Jordan. Akiva Goldsman's I Am Legend. It was recently revealed that the screenplay for Star Trek: Discovery's pilot was co-written by executive producer Akiva Goldsman. On the 51st anniversary of the franchise, Mike and John take a look at some work by one of the people leading Star Trek into its next phase with Goldsman's I Am Legend. This week, we watched Winter's Tale (2014), starring Colin Farrell, Russell Crowe, and Jessica Brown Findlay. Martin Scorsese called it unfilmable—and he may be right. This Akiva Goldsman film was marketed as a time-traversing romance, but when you actually sit and watch it, that description falls apart fast. The plot revolves around a battle between good and evil, with demon mobsters and angel horses, tuberculosis that burns you up, and sex that kills you. The music, cinematography, acting, and editing in this film weren't bad. In fact, when isolated, they're each okay. But the poor writing and confusing direction is what brings this film down. It's not the worse movie you'll ever watch, but it sure doesn't make any sense. We end the episode with a nice round of 20 Questions, and even hint at our next episode.
