Recorded live at our Shifting Landscapes exhibition in London last December, this conversation between Emergence Magazine executive editor Emmanuel Vaughan-Lee, renowned mycologist and author Merlin Sheldrake, and Marshmallow Laser Feast creative director Barney Steel—who was behind the exhibition's large-scale installation Breathing with the Forest—explores the mycelial webs that infiltrate and sustain our landscapes. Embracing the mystery and wonder of fungi as a means of deconstructing our Western philosophies around the self, the nature of intelligence, and the possibilities within community, each spoke to how the relational phenomenon of fungi could soften the imagined boundaries between our bodies and the great biosphere. Mikaela and Bryan of Alchemystic Fungi join Mason today for an explorative conversation around the multidimensional nature of the mycelial world. Connected through their shared passion and reverence for mother nature and her plant queendom, Mason, Mikaela and Bryan dive deep into the unifying and medicinal role fungi play on the planet, placing a spotlight on the plethora of functional applications it can have, especially as a remedy to the industrial impacts of our time. Whether it's churning through plastic, alchemising industrial waste, feeding the forests or supplying sustainable swaps for common synthetic materials, throughout this conversation we can begin to glean hope that despite the looming doom of the climate crisis, we have a future; and that future is fungi. Mikaela and Bryan spend their days on beautiful Bundjalung Country, visioning, researching, fossicking, educating and creating in the realms of fungi. Profoundly devoted to their craft and quest, this dynamic duo are deeply rooted in nature based ethics, unified by a circular economy where nothing goes to waste and everything is fed back into the death, birth, growth cycle of the earth. Alchemystic Fungi have big dreams and I personally cannot wait to see Mikaela and Bryan bring their visionary magic into continuous creative form. A rich and inspiring listen. Bryan, Mikaela & Mason discuss: - Heart math and the work of Stephen Harrod Buhner. - The Alchemysitic Fungi origin story. - The mushroom market; competition verse connection and infinite unity. - Mycelium, water filtration and environmental toxins. - Mycorrhizal associations; the symbiotic relationship between a fungus and a root system. - Fungi and atmospheric carbon. - Mycelial based materials as the future of sustainable industry. This week, we are excited to welcome back Mycologist, Natural Historian and Photographer, Alison Pouliot, to chat about her new book Underground Lovers, a gorgeous journey that reaches down to earth, and deeper, to dwell with fungal allies and aliens, discover how fungi hold forests together, and why humans are deeply entwined with these unruly renegades of the subterrain. Told through first-hand stories from the Australian desert to Iceland's glaciers to America's Cascade Mountains Alison shares encounters with glowing ghost fungi and unearths the enigma of the lobster mushroom. Melding science and personal reflection, she explores the fungi that appear after fire, how fungi and climate change interact, the role of fungi in our ecosystems. Joining Alison via phone, we also welcome back Peter Wenzel, Mushroom Designer and Grower, and co-Founder of Fungi Co, who has been fascinated by the form and function of funky fungi since the last millennium, exploring science, art, food, myco-design, education and novel growing techniques.

What if hidden in the soil below the monumental myth of patriarchal masculinity there was a rhizomatic biodiversity of alternative masculinities? What does it mean to create an ecosystem of narratives, rather than uplift a singular story? Our Story Probably the precursor to the King Arthur tales, the story of Tristan and Isolde includes star-crossed lovers, castles and the wilds, as well as questions of loyalty, duty, and truth. The versions we can access today are set in a fractionated England in the time after Roman rule. Ireland, still unconquered just across the sea, is key to the plot as well as the spirit of the saga. Our guest Sophie Strand is working on an epic novel about Tristan and Isolde. She ushers us through the relationships, betrayals, passions, and tragedies that are part of this long, episodic, non-linear story that refuses to conform to a textual, climactic narrative. Our Guest Sophie Strand is a writer based in the Hudson Valley who focuses on the intersection of spirituality, storytelling, and ecology. Her first book of essays The Flowering Wand: Rewilding the Sacred Masculine will be published by Inner Traditions in Fall 2022 and is available for pre-order. Her eco-feminist historical fiction reimagining of the gospels The Madonna Secret will also be published by Inner Traditions in Spring 2023. You can subscribe for my newsletter at sophiestrand.substack.com. Follow her on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/cosmogyny/ (@cosmogyny) and at www.sophiestrand.com. Our Conversation Sophie speaks mythologically, calling on stories and characters as diverse as David and Saul, Joseph and the sons of Jacob, Demeter and Persephone and more. This novel about Tristan and Isolde, set in Cornwall, perhaps as far back as the Bronze Age, is still a long way off from publication. Sophie's original inspiration: the Ridley Scott film version of the Tristan and Isolde story at age 12. (A remarkable parallel to 12 year-old Marisa falling in love with Ireland thanks to the Tom Cruise movie, Far and Away!) Joseph Campbell thought of Tristan as epitome of the hero, but Sophie sees Tristan's constant attempts to escape the Hero's Journey The trauma inherent in the hero's journey and Sophie's quest to diversify it, rather than eradicate it completely. Her work resonates with Marisa's Heroine's Knot and the desire to honor the life that happens even when we do not cross the threshold of typical adventure. The continuum between potion and poison and how dosage determines what is medicinal and what is deadly. The “mycelial intelligence of the internet” and how Sophie and Marisa found each other through an Irish organization called https://www.instagram.com/thetrailblazery/ (The Trailblazery), though they live only about 7 miles apart in the Hudson Valley. Metaphorical and mythic resonance with fungi which confuse our concept of species and relationship in compelling, necessary ways. Book recommendation: https://bookshop.org/a/832/9780525510321 (Merlin Sheldrake's Entangled Life.) How does our understanding of individuality, gender, and romantic love change when we see ourselves as https://cisindus.org/2021/02/10/holobionts-a-new-theory-that-shatters-the-myth-of-biological-individual/ (holobiont)? There's an unfathomable biodiversity of knowledge, of ecosystems, and in our own guts. Sophie explores this idea further in the forthcoming https://bookshop.org/a/832/9781644115961 (The Flowering Wand: Rewilding the Sacred Masculine). Did you know that Mycelial networks can break down dead plant or animal matter and they can connect with the roots of living plants to share nutrients between them? Whether that was news or not, mycelial networks are much more complicated than you might imagine. To get down in the dirt with them, we spoke with Maya Elson. Maya works with CoRenewal, a nonprofit dedicated to providing education and research in ecosystem restoration, where she leads projects around post-fire bioremediation and ecological generation. She also runs her own organization: Mycopsychology. She calls herself a ‘mycelial networker.' What's up to my steadfast cetaceans and loquacious loons! Welcome back to the BNP and thank you so much for joining! We got a fun one for ya this week folks, a real smorgasbord of podcasting piquancy. You already know we got those zany audio tidbits- and those who enjoy the Bro Vibin skits are gonna be as satisfied as a koala bear at a bamboo shit-paper plant. Your veggies this week are nuanced, well-seasoned and colorful, though they hail from the fungal rather than plant kingdom. That's right folks, we're talking about the blue apples, the zoom zooms, the goomers and the toadstools... it's mushroom week at the BNP! Any discussion of mushrooms in the modern age worth its weight in, well, shrooms, has to include the great American mycologist Paul Stamets, and this ep is no exception. I feature a 2019 interview with Stamets where he speaks on the mycelial network that really ties the forest together, does it not? Stamets argues persuasively that these mycelial webs are neurological networks for nature, and points out that mycelium mats are living organisms that span hundreds of acres and live for thousands of years.... whoa. As well, I'm listening right now to Fyodor Dostoyevsky's Notes From Underground, and I offer some thoughts about the prose itself as well as the significance it carries for our modern times and our battle against transhumanism and the A.I. apocalypse. Finally, I include a recent Barbarian Yak Fest segment with Dr. Sylvie where we discuss the bombing of the Georgia Guidestones, the "Stonehenge of the U.S." This week's outro features the iconic Mexican mushroom shamaness Maria Sabina. In this episode of The Mama Psychedelia Podcast, with Zuri Snow, we touch on variety of topics deeply interwoven through the mycelial web of consciousness. A touching conversation on mental health healing with psilocybin and other earth medicines, free birthing, sovereign led living, holistic childbirth continuity of care, normalizing altered states in western culture, mental health and diagnosing of children, and so so much more! Zuri is a holistic childbirth consultant, a student birthkeeper, an earth medicine advocate, and an unschooling mother of two wildling toddlers. She is passionate about bringing “the sacred” back into the rites of passage that define our human existence, and inspires this through practical ritual, earth-based wisdom, and accessible education. She is currently focused on assisting families through the transformational initiation of pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum through education, advocacy, and soul counselling, both in person and virtually. Her work emphasizes reclaiming sovereignty through connecting to the intuitive wisdom that lies within us all. She is passionate about de-stigmatizing the use of entheogenic medicines for mothers and families through storytelling. If you have a personal story you'd like to share anonymously, you can email zuri.mamabearth@gmail.com. Each share helps to break the stigma and normalize the use of these sacred medicines during such transformational times. Intro Music "Waters of the Earth" by Satori covered by me, Mackenzie. Today's guest is Michael Tanenbaum, CEO and co-founder of Mycelial, an edge data platform for distributed local first applications that is built with developers in mind. Myceclial takes the accomplishments of the cloud native movement to bring data that exists outside the data center into the hands of the developers themselves. With a focus on data from the “edge”, which Michael defines as anything from a smart thermostat, to a 5g tower, applications, and more.In this episode Michael lays out how he and his partners captilized on the oppurtunity of recent innovations in cloud native, and in turn commercialize the need to “get applications out of the data center to work harmoniously with applications in the data center.” He and his co-founders are striving to build complex edge native applications and local native data. Michael breaks down the “three pillars” of edge native to provide some crucial definitions, how he identified the needs Mycelial addresses, the diverse range of obstacles they've already surmounted, and more! Psychedelic decriminalization is on the move throughout the United States and Colorado is at its epicenter. Today on Life is a Festival Matthew Duffy (Duffy), co-founder of the reform and education platform SPORE, explains Colorado's upcoming legislation in poetic mushroom metaphors. We begin with Duffy's initial experiences with permaculture and how a fungi's mycelial network is the ideal model for organizing political change. We discuss psychedelic decriminalization vs legalization and why the two must happen simultaneously. We review the issue of psychedelic exceptionalism and how to re-perspectivize identity politics. Finally we discuss SPORE's upcoming Right to Heal campaign and how you can get involved with Colorado's legislation. Duffy is an ecofuturist organizer, myco-poet, and Co-Ecosystem Director at SPORE, The Society for Psychedelic Outreach Reform and Education. After teaming up with Decriminalize Denver in 2018 for the Denver Psilocybin Initiative, Duffy went on to co-found SPORE and enroll in the Resilient Leadership MA at Naropa University where he completed his master's degree in May 2021. Duffy and SPORE are currently focused on the Right to Heal campaign to prioritize marginalized community empowerment, access, equity, leadership, and stewardship within the psychedelic movement. Generational healing will happen in beloved community so let's make like mushrooms and get into some radical collaboration! Was the evolutionary development of Human Consciousness a product of a pre-existing intelligence that can be found within the Fungal Mycelial-Network of Planet Earth? And if it exists, could there be ways in which we can gain access to the mind of the planet? Much like the human brain, mycelium makes connections among plants, only these connections are underground. Scientists are now discovering that plants and trees have nervous systems that fungus might control, and it may affect communication, memory, and learning. "I believe that mycelium is the neurological network of nature. Interlacing mosaics of mycelium infuse habitats with information-sharing membranes. These membranes are aware, react to change, and collectively have the long-term health of the host environment in mind. The mycelium stays in constant molecular communication with its environment, devising diverse enzymatic and chemical responses to complex challenges" - Paul Stamets Become a Patreon and gain access to the Unity Community Discord Server | https://www.patreon.com/ProjectUnity

Finally found some good stories, so we're back! This episode: How slime molds encode and use memories built into their own bodies! Download Episode (4.6 MB, 6.7 minutes) Show notes: Microbe of the episode: Aeromonas salmoncida News item Takeaways Despite being single-celled organisms, slime molds have fairly complex behavior, including a basic form of memory. They often grow as a network of tubes of cytoplasm branching out from one place to find and exploit new sources of food in their environment. When these tubes connect to new food, other less productive branches of its body shrink away. As it turns out, this body form serves a role in memory also. This study determined that the slime mold's tubes undergo constant squeezing, which moves cell contents around and also shrinks them. When tubes are connecting to a food source though, they secrete a softening agent that allows the pressure to expand the tubes instead of shrinking them. These larger tubes consequently are capable of transporting more softening agent farther away to newer food sources, so the history of food discoveries is recorded in the slime mold's own body, which also influences its responses to new discoveries. Detangling the Wood Wide Web: Assessing Functionality of Common Mycelial Networks Willow AbshireSims What lies beneath our feet when we walk through a forest? A massive web of mycelium runs underground, connecting trees by the roots in a network commonly referred to as the “Wood Wide Web”. But what do we know about this “Wood Wide Web”? Perhaps more importantly: what don’t we know, and where might future research take us in our understanding of these interactions? Bio: Willow AbshireSims is a Masters student at Northwestern University and the Chicago Botanic Garden. She graduated from Christopher Newport University in 2019 with a Bachelors of Science in Environmental Biology. In her free time, she enjoys reading, hiking, foraging, and collecting rocks. This week on Priority One --- We trek out Star Trek: Picard's possible series longevity, Sir Patrick's history with Star Trek, Mike McMahon's vision for Lower Decks, and what Simon Pegg knows about the next Trek film - spoiler: it isn't much! In Star Trek Gaming, Star Trek Online goes to Red Alert, takes on rubberbanding, and Star Trek Timelines announces its newest event! Of course, as always, before we wrap up the show, we'll open hailing frequencies for your incoming messages Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! This Weeks Community Questions Are: CQ: Do you think Star Trek is better suited for Television, Movies, or is there a place for Trek on both? AND CQ: What's your Star Trek Online Red Alert of choice? Why? TREK IT OUT by Jake Morgan Akiva Goldsman Talks Picard Delays are an inevitability - even more so now, during the pandemic. But with those delays comes anticipation, and sometimes opportunity. At least that's what Star Trek Executive Producer and Oscar winning writer Akiva Goldsman thinks. Last week, Goldsman sat down with Collider to discuss Star Trek: Picard season 2, how quarantine has changed the timetable, and how the delays may be a blessing in disguise. Goldsman discussed those inevitable delays we just discussed, telling Collider ”We were to start shooting in June, which I guarantee you we will not unless the world opens tomorrow. We had broken the season, we were about halfway through the writing of it. You know, we will start as soon as we can once the world opens, you know? Prep will have to resume, and then we'll start. We know what it is, and it's cool.” In regards to Picard's early “dark tone”, as well as Covid-19's silver-lining, Goldsman explained ”I kept saying, ‘They're reviewing the first act of a movie.' The first act of a movie is always dark. If you stopped It's a Wonderful Life at the bridge, it's a really dark movie! Because fundamentally in a longform narrative, it's a redemption story, it's a healing story, it has to be bad at the beginning so it gets good at the end, otherwise there's nothing to fix. So we're in this weird world now where we create one narrative object but we dole it out bit by bit, which is fascinating. And can be kind of fun. But what you really want is to be able to refine your setups once you've written your payoffs… if in fact you could have the time to write 10 hours first, that would be amazing. And maybe we will.” When asked how many seasons Goldsman foresaw in Picard's future, he responded ”I mean, I think we have discussed it as both a 3 season show, a 5 season show, a “let's just keep going forever” show[...]Star Trek: Picard in my view will go as long as Patrick Stewart wants to do it… As I'm sure you know, he was not interested in coming back. And we did a lot of… really good collaborative story breaking and talking and you know and I think he's particularly delighted in a good way about having come back. And we will rely on that good will until he feels he's done.” Sir Patrick Lets Loose With CBS This Morning Speaking of Sir Patrick, the “Picard” star had a candid interview with CBS This Morning about his history with Star Trek, Picard, and his daily sonnets. When asked by "CBS This Morning" co-host Tony Dokoupil whether he always aspired to Produce a series, Stewart said ”No. I was too naïve, too new at the game of series television. And I had so much work to do. I mean[...]the first couple of years, I didn't have a life or a social life at all. We'd work a five-day week; 13-, 14-, sometimes 15-hour days, especially towards the end of the week. And Saturday morning, I would allow myself a little sleep in. And then I would do my own laundry, which by the way, I still do. It's an obsession with me.” Stewart was frank about his early days on the TNG set, saying /”I lectured my fellow cast members about some of the fooling around that was going on on the set, and the games that they were playing and the singing and the jokes and the ruining shots. And there was this horrible silence. And it was Denise Crosby who said to me, 'Trick, come on, we gotta have some fun!' And I said, 'We are not here to have fun.' I said that! And that became, you know, a legendary quote, as I progressively got sillier and sillier as the series wore on.” Finally, in regards to Stewart's charming daily sonnets, Sir Patrick said ”I had no idea what I was saying or what it meant. But there was something in the language” Mike McMahon Tells Us Something About Lower Decks Star Trek's first animated series since the 70's is set to air this year, and the buzz is starting to form around the upcoming “Lower Decks”. In the interview from our first story, Akiva Goldsman said ”Lower Decks] literally couldn't seem funnier to me”. But what does series showrunner and Star Trek super-fan Mike McMahon think? We're glad you asked! McMahon discussed the series with Slashfilm this week, explaining the premise and structure of the show ”If you're watching Lower Decks, you're getting a full Star Trek episode from the perspective of people who are having their own social and emotional stories and their own sci-fi stories, but they just aren't on the bridge. They don't have the information the bridge is getting, and they don't have the responsibility.” McMahon, who was the showrunner on the popular “Rick and Morty”, explained how Lower Decks isn't a Star Trek skinned version of his previous show ”A big thing that was important to me was figuring out how do we comedically access these characters. How can these characters be funny and not break Star Trek? You can't have a Morty [from Rick and Morty] in Star Trek. You can't just have a stupid person in Starfleet, otherwise it breaks the aspirational paradigm of what humanity is like in Starfleet. So our leads are foils for each other, but they're very much ingrained in Star Trek.” McMahon gave a little flavor to the series main characters, explaining Ensign Beckett Mariner as ”kind of like Captain Kirk if Kirk wasn't a captain and didn't have the power. Kirk would follow his gut, and she followers her gut.” and Ensign Brad Boimler as /”so by-the-book and so burdened by following the rules that he can't follow his gut.” Simon Pegg Tells Us Nothing About Star Trek IV Oh Simon Pegg. How sick you must be of answering questions about Star Trek. But bless your heart - you keep doing it. This week, Collider had the honor of asking Pegg about a possible upcoming movie that he knows very little about. Pegg was asked what he and his castmates knew about an upcoming film, to which he replied ”If [Paramount says], ‘We'd like to do another movie,' I'm sure we'll all jump at the chance. I miss those guys, and I love making those films. But I just don't know. Noah Hawley's project has been mentioned, and maybe that will happen. I don't know anything about that. So yeah, I'm as in the dark as everyone else, I'm in the same boat as you guys.” Pegg discussed the more “niche” audience of Trek, when compared to - say - the Marvel Universe, and offered ”the obvious thing to do would be to not go for that massive spectacle, go for something a little bit more restrained in the vein of the original series. Yes, that would be a brilliant thing to do, and I'm sure it probably has been discussed… You specialize a little bit more.” Finally, Pegg may have talked himself out of future Star Trek work, telling Collider ”Maybe TV is a better place for [Star Trek] now. Television has evolved so much. It's become something which is very much a contemporary, a peer of cinema. It's simply viewed in a different way. It isn't a reduced scope anymore. You can still do masses of interesting things, and it can still look modern and not inexpensive. Maybe television is a better format for Star Trek. It's teamwork that makes the existential threat work, I guess. From May 28th at 8 AM Pacific to June 4th at 10 AM Pacific, PC captains will be able to play all five Red Alert Task Force Operations: Borg Red Alert Elachi Red Alert Tholian Red Alert Tzenkethi Red Alert Nakuhl Red Alert Players will receive the normal rewards for each playthrough, and each day's first completed Red Alert will also grant Daily Event Progress on their account. This week on Priority One --- We trek out Star Trek: Picard’s possible series longevity, Sir Patrick’s history with Star Trek, Mike McMahon’s vision for Lower Decks, and what Simon Pegg knows about the next Trek film - spoiler: it isn’t much! In Star Trek Gaming, Star Trek Online goes to Red Alert, takes on rubberbanding, and Star Trek Timelines announces its newest event! Of course, as always, before we wrap up the show, we’ll open hailing frequencies for your incoming messages Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! This Weeks Community Questions Are: CQ: Do you think Star Trek is better suited for Television, Movies, or is there a place for Trek on both? AND CQ: What’s your Star Trek Online Red Alert of choice? Why? TREK IT OUT by Jake Morgan Akiva Goldsman Talks Picard Delays are an inevitability - even more so now, during the pandemic. But with those delays comes anticipation, and sometimes opportunity. At least that’s what Star Trek Executive Producer and Oscar winning writer Akiva Goldsman thinks. Prep will have to resume, and then we’ll start. We know what it is, and it’s cool.” In regards to Picard’s early “dark tone”, as well as Covid-19’s silver-lining, Goldsman explained ”I kept saying, ‘They’re reviewing the first act of a movie.’ The first act of a movie is always dark. If you stopped It’s a Wonderful Life at the bridge, it’s a really dark movie! Because fundamentally in a longform narrative, it’s a redemption story, it’s a healing story, it has to be bad at the beginning so it gets good at the end, otherwise there’s nothing to fix. So we’re in this weird world now where we create one narrative object but we dole it out bit by bit, which is fascinating. And can be kind of fun. But what you really want is to be able to refine your setups once you’ve written your payoffs… if in fact you could have the time to write 10 hours first, that would be amazing. And maybe we will.” When asked how many seasons Goldsman foresaw in Picard’s future, he responded ”I mean, I think we have discussed it as both a 3 season show, a 5 season show, a “let’s just keep going forever” show[...]Star Trek: Picard in my view will go as long as Patrick Stewart wants to do it… As I’m sure you know, he was not interested in coming back. And we did a lot of… really good collaborative story breaking and talking and you know and I think he’s particularly delighted in a good way about having come back. And we will rely on that good will until he feels he’s done.” Sir Patrick Lets Loose With CBS This Morning Speaking of Sir Patrick, the “Picard” star had a candid interview with CBS This Morning about his history with Star Trek, Picard, and his daily sonnets. And that became, you know, a legendary quote, as I progressively got sillier and sillier as the series wore on.” Finally, in regards to Stewart’s charming daily sonnets, Sir Patrick said ”I had no idea what I was saying or what it meant. But there was something in the language” Mike McMahon Tells Us Something About Lower Decks Star Trek’s first animated series since the 70’s is set to air this year, and the buzz is starting to form around the upcoming “Lower Decks”. In the interview from our first story, Akiva Goldsman said ”Lower Decks] literally couldn’t seem funnier to me”. But what does series showrunner and Star Trek super-fan Mike McMahon think? We’re glad you asked! McMahon discussed the series with Slashfilm this week, explaining the premise and structure of the show ”If you’re watching Lower Decks, you’re getting a full Star Trek episode from the perspective of people who are having their own social and emotional stories and their own sci-fi stories, but they just aren’t on the bridge. They don’t have the information the bridge is getting, and they don’t have the responsibility.” McMahon, who was the showrunner on the popular “Rick and Morty”, explained how Lower Decks isn’t a Star Trek skinned version of his previous show ”A big thing that was important to me was figuring out how do we comedically access these characters. How can these characters be funny and not break Star Trek? You can’t have a Morty [from Rick and Morty] in Star Trek. You can’t just have a stupid person in Starfleet, otherwise it breaks the aspirational paradigm of what humanity is like in Starfleet. So our leads are foils for each other, but they’re very much ingrained in Star Trek.” McMahon gave a little flavor to the series main characters, explaining Ensign Beckett Mariner as ”kind of like Captain Kirk if Kirk wasn’t a captain and didn’t have the power. Kirk would follow his gut, and she followers her gut.” and Ensign Brad Boimler as /”so by-the-book and so burdened by following the rules that he can’t follow his gut.” Simon Pegg Tells Us Nothing About Star Trek IV Oh Simon Pegg. How sick you must be of answering questions about Star Trek. But bless your heart - you keep doing it. This week, Collider had the honor of asking Pegg about a possible upcoming movie that he knows very little about. Pegg was asked what he and his castmates knew about an upcoming film, to which he replied ”If [Paramount says], ‘We’d like to do another movie,’ I’m sure we’ll all jump at the chance. I miss those guys, and I love making those films. But I just don’t know. Noah Hawley’s project has been mentioned, and maybe that will happen. I don’t know anything about that. So yeah, I’m as in the dark as everyone else, I’m in the same boat as you guys.” Pegg discussed the more “niche” audience of Trek, when compared to - say - the Marvel Universe, and offered ”the obvious thing to do would be to not go for that massive spectacle, go for something a little bit more restrained in the vein of the original series. You can still do masses of interesting things, and it can still look modern and not inexpensive. Maybe television is a better format for Star Trek. "Mycelial networks act as a resource transport layer and communications network connecting organisms in the biosphere. This enables organisms to voluntarily trade resources and knowledge across species lines. Increasing trade leads to increased specialization (division of labor), further increasing biodiversity (wealth and resilience) in the ecosystem." - Brandon Quittem After the long wait, we are finally covering Part 4, the conclusion, of Quittem's incredible "Mycelial Money" series, exploring Bitcoin as a catalyst for the evolution of our species. Michael Stuart Ani is a farmer, writer, and advocate for the protection of the environment. He has lived and worked intimately with some of the most remote indigenous communities of Central and South America and has been carrying the ritual steps of the Ghost Dance for decades. In the 1960s and 70s, he was the only outsider allowed into Mexico's Sierra Mazateca cloud forest where he developed a lifelong relationship with an entheogenic mushroom called Deshetō. He later spent 12 years with the Yanomami tribe of Venezuela, fighting epidemics. He is featured in the 1992 documentary, ”Yanomami: Keepers of the Flame” and wrote the book “The Ghost Dance: The Untold Story of the Americas.” In this fascinating and wide ranging conversation we talk about the sacred connection between plants and humans, cultivation of botanical medicines, the lineage of ritual, the fallacies of the modern approach to healing, ancestors, gods, and reclaiming our place in the weave of nature. I sit down with self-motivated mycologist (someone who studies fungi), Wes Wojtowicz, for a deep dive into the amazing world of fungi. We talk about what fungi are and fungal reproduction and metabolism. We discuss all the great work and research being done by people like Paul Stamets and the many benefits mushrooms can offer human health, applications for bioremediation like cleaning up toxic wastes, their crucial role in ecosystem health, and their potential to halt the colony collapse of bees. He shares his wealth of knowledge on mushroom foraging and low-tech ways to cultivate mushrooms at home for any of you interested in getting started yourself. With the environmental crises we face, this is perhaps one of the most important fields and one that is still making discoveries every day. I came away more excited than ever to do more foraging and growing of mushrooms and to find ways to get involved in partnering with our planet.

This Weeks Community Questions Are: CQ: Have you seen the new Short Trek, "Ask Not"? What did you think? AND CQ: Would you pay $48 to experience the Star Trek Discovery Away mission for 26 minutes? Do you plan on going to the VR experience in the future? TREK IT OUT by Shane Hoover Discovery Season 2 Deleted Tilly Scene The second season of Star Trek Discovery released this week on Blu-Ray and DVD. In a teaser last week on the IO9 website, CBS released an exclusive deleted scene featuring Tilly and her Mycelial parasitic pal, May Ahearn. The scene opens on Tilly trying to ignore the mysterious May by reading a PADD. May peeks around the edge and grins. Tilly, exasperated, tries to flee to the bathroom of her quarters, only for May to suddenly appear in that room. Clearly on the edge, Tilly declares that she can't be in the Starfleet Command Training Program if she's mentally unsound, to which May quips "Well that hardly seems fair!". May argues that Tilly's mind works in “Fascinating ways. I'm inside it, feeling the throb of your neurons, the rush of hot oxygenated blood coursing between hemispheres.” To which a confused Tilly responds, "Are you coming on to me?" May convinces Tilly to help her in her quest to observe and speak to the Captain. She promises that she can help Tilly reach her ultimate potential and change the universe for the better. Once she's gotten her message to the Captain through Tilly, May swears she'll be gone. And the scene ends. The Season Two Blu-Ray release boasts over four hours of special features, including behind-the-scenes featurettes, cast and crew insights, and two of the show's Short Treks - "Runaway" and "The Brightest Star". If this deleted scene is any indication, some great material from Season Two wound up on the cutting room floor! Captain Pike Short Trek Teaser StarTrek.com dropped a sneak peek at the upcoming Captain Pike centered Short Trek, "Ask Not" this week. As Pike narrates that the Enterprise has picked up a distress call from the U.S.S. Bowman, we see a young Starfleet officer in red working frantically at a console. Suddenly, the two wall displays behind her explode in a shower of fire, smoke, and glass. The scene fades to black and announces that the Short Trek would release on November 14th. Next, we see Pike himself declaring to someone offscreen, "I need you to let me out of here." We see an officer in gold, presumably Pike, being led by two guards through a bulkhead door in restraints and a black hood. Next, we see a dark-haired young woman declare that he's a prisoner whose orders carry no weight. An angry Pike barks "Cadet! I am giving you a direct order to release me!" The cadet refuses, and Pike warns that she will never see the inside of a starship again. Ominous music swells as the scene cuts to the Short Treks logo and the date November 14. There are plenty of sudden cuts and one-sided conversations in this teaser. So it's possible, even likely, that the relationship between the captive Pike and this cadet will not play out entirely as it seems. What's certain, though, is that Anson Mount's Pike will find himself in chains and in peril aboard another Starfleet vessel. Is he the victim of a trap? Was there a mutiny or piracy aboard the U.S.S. Bowman? What are Number One, Spock, and the Enterprise doing to rescue their Captain? If you haven't already, check out the Short Trek now on CBS All Access. Star Trek: The Animated Series Leaving Netflix Streaming giant Netflix announced this week that all seasons of Star Trek: The Animated Series will be removed from the service on December 1, 2019. This announcement applies only to Netflix viewers in the United States, for now. The show, which aired for 22 episodes over two seasons, has been carried by Netflix since 2016. Though there has been no announcement, it seems likely that the show will be moving to CBS All Access after it leaves Netflix. While not widely considered essential Star Trek viewing, the Animated Series carried on the tales of the U.S.S. Enterprise where TOS left off. Almost the entire original cast returned to voice their characters for the show. If you're a Trek completist who hasn't yet seen it, or if you just enjoy the wilder side of Trek explored by these animated stories, you can still catch it on Netflix for now. Anthony Rapp's Engagement Star Trek Discovery actor Anthony Rapp took to Twitter this week to make a big personal announcement. He tweeted “So something happened tonight. I asked Ken if he would marry me and he said yes. I am so very happy, and I'm so very thrilled to share this news” The tweet was accompanied by a smiling picture of the happy couple. Voices of actors and fans from around the Star Trek world chimed in to share their best wishes. Everyone here at Priority One Podcast would also like to send our very best wishes and congratulations to Anthony and Ken! Captain Spock Statue Are you a die-hard collector of Star Trek merchandise? Then you might be interested in a brand new exclusive Captain Spock statue announced for pre-order by Sideshow and Darkside Collectibles Studio. According to the announcement it is “Recreated from original CBS Studio Inc. archived materials and through a thorough examination of the original filming costumes the statue features a breathtaking likeness of actor Leonard Nimoy as Captain Spock of the U.S.S. ENTERPRISE as he appears in the Paramount Pictures STAR TREK II The Wrath of Khan film directed by Nicholas Meyer in 1982. Leonard Nimoy, posed in the official Starfleet salutation, measures over 25 inches and is presented in an authentically sculpted detailed captain's costume. The statue captures the noble feeling and character of Spock and is accompanied with the United Federation of Planets flag.” The statue is truly amazingly detailed, capturing one of Nimoy's greatest performances as Spock in one of the most beloved Star Trek films. Two versions are available, one with Spock's hands behind his back, and another depicting Spock in the act of the famous Vulcan salute. The statue's $1299 price tag might deter all but the most determined collectors, though. In Star Trek gaming, we enter the Breach, Strike Wing Escorts are available, and are you ready to step onto the Holodeck. Of course, as always, before we wrap up the show, we’ll open hailing frequencies for your incoming messages Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! Leonard Nimoy, posed in the official Starfleet salutation, measures over 25 inches and is presented in an authentically sculpted detailed captain’s costume. This week, we #TrekOut the BIG NEWS - Viacom and CBS have finally re-merged and what that means for Star Trek. Tony and I are here to give you OUR perspective - not only as trekkies - but as LAWYERS...and Henry will be there too! AND CQ: Which of the upcoming changes to existing STO T6 ship classes are you most excited about? Why? Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! TREK IT OUT by Jake Morgan Viacom and CBS Merge to Become - ViacomCBS There are stories that we cover here on Priority One Podcast that tend to keep popping up. Star Trek Kelvin IV, Tarantino Trek, how Guard Frequency is a pretty good show and you should check it out. But one story that has popped up for years, the reunification of Viacom and CBS, may finally be getting a conclusion! It had been suspected that talks were “Heating up” between the two National Amusement properties back in April, when CBS Acting Chief Executive Joe Ianniello's contract was extended through 2019. It was believed that Ianniello, who had been serving as former CBS CEO Les Moonves' replacement since September 2018, was both amicable to - and necessary for - a re-unification of CBS and Viacom. On May 30th, CNBC reported that merger negotiations were set to resume in mid-June. Then, on July 15th, both CBS and Viacom announced that they would present their financial earnings reports on the same day, August 8th, for the first time in “many quarters” - sending the industry into a state of rampant speculation. Finally, on August 13th, the deal was announced. The new entity, known as ViacomCBS, will merge assets from both companies - including Showtime, Nickelodeon, CBS Television Studios, and Viacom's newly acquired streaming service Pluto TV. Viacom CEO Bob Bakish will serve as President and CEO of the newly merged company, and former CBS interim-CEO Joseph Ianello will serve as a chairman and CEO of CBS. Board Chair, and orchestrator of the merger, Shari Redstone said in the official announcement “My father once said ‘content is king,' and never has that been more true than today. Through CBS and Viacom's shared passion for premium content and innovation, we will establish a world-class, multiplatform media organization that is well-positioned for growth in a rapidly transforming industry” Star Trek was specifically cited as an asset by CEO Bob Bakish in an investment press presentation, expanding on the release by saying “We will have one of the largest libraries of iconic intellectual property, including more than 140,000 premium television episodes and over 3,600 film titles. Notably, this library reunites TV and film rights for some of our most popular franchises, including Star Trek and Mission: Impossible. And we see significant potential to better leverage these and other properties across platforms and assets, including film, television, live events, recreation and consumer products.” While much of the excitement centers on the combination of intellectual properties - including “Mission Impossible”, “NCIS”, “Transformers”, “South Park”, “The Twilight Zone”, and of course “Star Trek” - a big factor in the merger seems to focus on “Direct to Consumer” video-on-demand services. In an investor call made on August 13th, Ianello said “Just think about adding content from Nickelodeon, BET, MTV, Comedy Central to CBS All Access, and Paramount movies to Showtime. And also imagine our [ad-supported video on demand] properties like CBS Sports HQ and ET Live being added to Pluto [TV]. Plus, all of this will increasingly be done on a global basis.”. When asked whether the price-points of ViacomCBS's current VOD services will be affected by the merger, Ianello said ViacomCBS would take a “slow and steady” approach to any changes. STAR TREK ONLINE AND GAMING NEWS by Shane Hoover Awakening: Beneath the Skin! Previously in Star Trek Online, the villainous J'Ula unleashed her fearsome Mycelial weapon upon the Federation, catapulting her fleet of 23rd century Klingons into 2410, along with your Age of Discovery player Captains. Awakening: Beneath the Skin will be the next episode in the story, releasing on PC September 10th and later this year on consoles. Joined by Star Trek Discovery's Anthony Rapp, voicing a holographically reconstructed Paul Stamets, your Captain must venture into the Mycelial Network itself to stop J'Ula before she turns the power of her weapon on the planet Andoria. Putting the “Temporal” in “Temporal Starships” A number of frequently requested changes will be coming to Star Trek Online soon(™)! First, the entire collection of T6 Temporal Destroyers and Science Vessels originally released with the Temporal Lock Box are being brought up to date with the Temporal Specialization. These ships will now boast a Temporal Operative specialization on the Commander bridge officer seating, and will gain access to the Molecular Reconstruction game mechanic. Second, ships formerly called “Flight-Deck Cruisers” are being uniformly updated to “Flight-Deck Carriers”. As such, they will retain the 8 weapon configuration of Engineering cruisers, while boasting 2 hangar bays as carriers. All ships of the type will also have access to the Shield Frequency Modulation and Attract Fire cruiser commands. Lastly, not unlike the changes to Flight-Deck Carriers, current Escort Carriers are also being updated. To reinforce the differences between these ships and other true carriers, these ships will be reclassified as Strike Wing Escorts. Additionally, their Quick Deployment ship mastery will be replaced with Enhanced Weapon Systems. XMPP Sunset As of September 19th 2019, Star Trek Online will end support for XMPP client connections to its internal chat systems. This change has been explained in a Cryptic blog as a measure taken in order to cut down on gold spamming activity over in-game chat channels. PC EVENTS Arena of Sompek Featured TFO The currently running Featured TFO, Arena of Sompek, will be wrapping up on August 29th. SPEAKERS: Gavin McIntyre, Brian Pickles, Alison Pouliot and Mike Hornblow HOST: Robyn Williams Fungi preceded trees and animals on the Earth by hundreds of millions of years, and they’ll be cleaning humanity’s mess long after we’re gone. But can the humble ‘shroom help us save the planet right now? Bioneer Gavin McIntyre from ground breaking New York biofabrication company Ecovative Design, mycologists Brian Pickles and Alison Pouliot, and interdisciplinary designer Mike Hornblow are certain they can. Fungi are saving the planet daily by energy cycling ecosystems, decomposing organic matter and feeding plants and animals. Now, scientists are also harnessing their mycelium – the root structure of mushrooms – to save the planet. They’re growing incredible sustainable materials to replace the use of wood, foam, bricks, leather, and plastics. They’ve even discovered fungi that eat plastic, clean up petrochemicals, absorb radiation, filter wastewater and treat a range of illnesses and immune-mediated conditions! Here’s to a fungi future.
David explains the effect Discovery Season 2 has had on his star trek fandom. Zach wants to know why Control was handled worse than Ultron. We discuss why season 2 feels like a badly written group project report in college. Come back in a few weeks for our full season 2 recap roundtable!
Today has been a hell of a day! Positive/Negative/in-between. Regardless, tonight the Ganoderma lucidum is very active. Brought the midi biodata through the Grandmother and then decided to simply bring it through Ableton. Thanks for listening!
David can't take it anymore, but Zach remains calm, cool, and critical. David defends Georgiou's supernova suggestion and rails against the hypocrites in the room (Cornwell). Zach reimagines the telling of this episode if the Spore Drive was damaged, and it makes a lot more sense.
David fears he's becoming a nitpicker, and Zach compares watching DSC to The Bachelor. Zach questions Saru's post-Vaharai competency as a leader and asks if his lack of fear hurts his ability to act rationally (Zach also pitches Free Solo as a comparison point to Saru). We get spun up on time travel storytelling and how stereotypically treacherous Control's motivations are. We hate the ending of the episode. It's bad.
Our disappointment, unfortunately, continues. Dave and Zach discuss why they feel this episode (and the season of late) are going down the wrong path. Everyone's a bit confused on the ever-expanding feature list of the Red Angel suit. Zach explains why the changes to Leland cheapen the character, and Dave pledges his unwavering commitment to optimism in the upcoming season finale.
This episode really didn't stick the landing for us. David wants to know why anthropologists are building time machines just to test their pet theories. Zach teaches a class on time travel paradoxes, complete with examples involving a German child in the early 20th century. Not to poke fun, but if we designed ocular scanners, we would also put needles in the eyepieces.
We discuss how Airiam was misused in this episode as a one-off character, from her backstory through her apparent demise. Zach points out how this episode raises good questions about simulation and realistic fakes, and the challenges to understanding what is true in the world. David salutes Nhan, the one character who seemed to be focused on her job for the entire episode. Finally, we speculate about where the story will go over the last four episodes of the season and wonder if it can be told without a time travel paradox.
Zach complained and his wish was granted: an episode free of spore magic! David discusses the tragic, but beautiful ending to Pike's arc, as illuminated by this episode. We wonder if all might not be as it seems vis-a-vis the Squid Robots vs Red Angels, similar to the Kelpians and Baul. We loved the finale to this episode!
Zach wonders if Paul Stamets and the Spore Drive have become too powerful, like a Golden Gun for Star Trek storytelling. We really like Ethan Peck's Spock so far, and we're excited for more, but the decision his family makes has us wondering: is the Federation justice system complete garbage? Finally, David predicts the DC-Star Trek crossover event that literally no one wants.
This is a long one, sorry, we have a lot to get off our chests. Did the Baul do nothing wrong? That's not a joke, Zach and David seriously consider the question. Zach asks: how can the Disco crew mess up the prime directive when they debated it at length in episode 2? David shares his crazy theory about what the Red Angel is really up to.
Did this episode have a HUGH reveal or a HUGE reveal? Roger joins the podcast again to discuss all of the flaws and features of episode five. Roger points out some uncomfortable similarities between Star Trek and Scientology. David fixes some of the more frustrating science in this episode with the transporter. We really hope this episode was a bridge to bigger and better things in future weeks.
Mycelial ghosts.. I recorded more bio-data from the Stropharia. This is less squelchy, less hectic. Happy dreaming!

Learn more at permaculturevoices.com/128 Support the show at permaculturevoices.com/support Today I am talking to Dave Sewak about his new book Mycelial Mayhem. Dave has spent his whole life around mushrooms. It all started when he was a young boy and tagged along with his grandfather on his mushroom foraging expeditions. Dave then went on to become a mushroom forage himself and has spent nearly 2 decades cultivating mushrooms as a hobby and as a business. His book helps combine the technical knowledge with the business side of things give you a basic introduction into what the small scale mushroom business is all about. As you will here, it's not a business for everyone, but it is a business that stacks nicely onto na already existing enterprise. And like all businesses it's not always as easy or fun as it sounds on the surface. In today's show we'll will address these points and discuss some of the considerations to take into account if you want to start a mushroom business. We will also talk about integrating mushrooms into a garden setting, or a market garden setting. Could you add integrate mushrooms into that system and actually get productive results? It's an interesting concept that may prove to be a worthwhile experiment for you. Learn more at permaculturevoices.com/128 Support the show at permaculturevoices.com/support
