Good morning everybody! I was on with Matt this morning and we had a good discussion about my recommendations for the type of security software, ransomware, 5G, and the cost of TV now. Let's get into my conversation with Matt on WGAN. These and more tech tips, news, and updates visit - CraigPeterson.com --- Automated Machine Generated Transcript: Here's what I kind of recommend for people. If you are going to get some of the software, here's what I say you should get. First of all. Well, that was me this morning on WGAN radio, talking with Matt about, again, this week's hot topics, and if you're wondering who I am, I'm Craig Peterson, but here we go with Matt. Seven 36 WGAN morning news. Craig Peterson, our tech guru. He joins us now and he needs to turn down his radio. Cause I can hear my voice. That was odd, I don't have my radio on. A little echo there. Maybe we'll say so let me start off Craig, with a question about YouTube TV. I, I use YouTube TV. I'm a big fan of YouTube TV. And, it's been a decent price for me, not anymore though. Right? Yeah. A lot of us have been looking to, how can we cut back on our costs here? Cable TV was creeping up 50, 70, over a hundred dollars a month. And all people looked at this whole cost-cutting thing as a, you know, let's go on the internet. We can just get it cheap and you certainly could, but what we're starting to see now is a split-up of stuff. For instance, our friends over at Disney have decided to pull the Marvel universe from its competitors, because it now has Disney plus that it wants to charge you 10 to 15 to $20 a month for all these different services. Right. There's a plus there's Netflix. Peacock is coming up as NBC. CBS has theirs and YouTube has now. Taking the price of their we've kind of equivalent to the basic cable and has hiked that price by 30%. So if you're a brand new customer, you can expect to pay $65 a month for YouTube television service from here on out. Now they've added some more channels in there. They've picked up CBS Viacom family of cable TV networks. But this is getting to the point now where, who knows cable might be cheaper, but. There is something on the horizon that might help us all out. And that is five G. This is where we could be kind of a savior because right now you're paying the cable company for the internet. Anyways, most of us, right? Some of us might have DSL from the telephone company, which is not particularly fast. Some of us have the satellite service, which again is not particularly fast, but with five G that's going to reach even the smaller towns and cities eventually here. It's certainly not going to reach out in the middle of nowhere, but with five G we're going to have a platform that allows people to deliver very, very specific programming. So. My fingers are crossed, Matt, that hopefully with 5g coming out. We are going to see a huge change in that we can just get whatever we like. You know, we can't watch the NFL anymore after their announcement this week, but, you know, maybe just watch the Red Sox or, or watch the games you want to watch rather than have to buy these bundles like YouTube $65 a month bundle. Hmm, we are talking with Craig Peterson, our tech guru. He joins us at this time every week to go over. What's going on in the world of technology. Craig, I know that a lot of people are still worried about viruses on their computers. And so they oftentimes will try to get a. The free version of antivirus software or whatnot, but, there's a lot of reasons, perhaps not to do that and do instead pay for an antivirus software program. Why is that? Yeah, there are a lot of free programs out there and I've used many of them over the years. I don't want to confuse people. I mentioning some of the ones that I've used, but the free versions are exactly that they're free there to try and get you going. The features that you get when you pay for the software, really add up pretty quickly. Some of them have these anti-phishing features, some of them will even filter your email, looking for phishing attacks, which are really huge right now. And usually carry ransomware. It's on the increase. I'm afraid to say, but they include various other things that are going to help you out bank security, password managers, et cetera. Here's what I kind of recommend for people. If you are going to get some of the software. Here's what I say you should get. First of all. Use what's already on your machine. So if you're a Windows user, use the software that came with Windows - Windows Defender, make sure it stays up to date. Make sure it stays on. Another thing. This is kind of hard to do. I'll have to do a course on this, but lock down your computer. You can do this manually through the Windows firewall, unfortunately by default. Microsoft has too many services turned on. So turn off services you don't need and use Bit Defender. Get the paid version of Bit Defender. None of this is a hundred percent, but working together, you're going to get about an at this point about a 90% effectiveness and one more thing to get, and that's open DNS. Get the paid version. There are family versions. That'll help keep your kids safe online as well, away from the things maybe say shouldn't be seeing online, but the open DNS can cost you a few bucks as well. But those three things together, Matt, is going to save you from about 98% of all of the nastiness online. Ooh, that's all quite a bit. we're talking with Craig Peterson, our tech guru. He joins us at this time every Wednesday to go over the world of technology. A final question for you here, Craig. the biggest threat that we experience out there online right now seems to be ransomware. Is that getting worse? Yeah, it's absolutely getting worse and we've gotta be careful here. The FBI has been warning us about the increases in it. We've got all these security companies talking about it as well. Just last week, there's a new wave of ransomware attacks against large organizations. It was identified in 31 large businesses. Now, part of the reason it's identified there is they have security teams that are keeping an eye out for you as a small business. There's a home user. You're not going to report because you're not going to stop it. It's just going to be after the fact, hopefully, you have a good backup, frankly. But these attackers and breach the networks of these 31 different large businesses, and we're laying out the groundwork for their attacks. It's kind of interesting in the way they do it, so I won't get into it. Now we might talk about it again on, on Saturday during my show. The bottom line of ransomware is easier for the bad guys to do than ever before. We are clicking on more stuff than ever before because of the whole COVID thing. We want to know what's going on and we get an email, we click on it. So be very, very careful. Don't click on links to sites that you are not a hundred percent sure of. If you want to find out about COVID-19. There are a couple of sites you might want to go to. Some people go to the world health organization, but of course, you can go to cdc.gov and get all of the facts as we're being told, anyways. Just don't click on these emails, because ransomware is really nasty stuff. Good advice. It says always Craig Peterson, our tech guru joins us on Wednesdays at this time to go over the world of technology. You can hear him on this very station, Saturdays a one, because he goes into all these stories and more in greater depth. Craig, thanks as always for joining us. And we'll talk to you again soon. Star Trek: Generations. When the cast of the original Star Trek series returned to the screen in 1979’s Star Trek: The Motion Picture, it marked the culmination of 10 years of fan-ticipation that started with the untimely cancellation of the series. This was not the case when it came time for the cast of The Next Generation to leap to the silver screen. They began filming their own freshman movie immediately after wrapping their final TV episode. Using the same sets—albeit spruced up a bit—and following a script written by wunderkinds Brannon Braga and Ronald D. Moore long before they bashed out the series finale “All Good Things...”, the movie faced an uphill battle in attempting to convince fans that cinematic Trek was truly a different beast from the beloved TV show. And yet in the hands of longtime Next Gen director David Carson, Generations did just that, offering a feast for the eyes, truly cinematic storytelling and an eye for spectacle that set it apart from the previous weekly instalments. Whether or not the film worked dramatically, it most certainly deserved to be seen on the big screen. In this episode of Primitive Culture, host Duncan Barrett is joined by Dr. Chris Nunn at the University of Greenwich in London for a look at this key transitional moment in the continuing mission of Star Trek: The Next Generation. They consider Generations in relation to other TV-to-movie leaps, including The X-Files movie released only a few years later, which was required to slot into place within that show’s ongoing continuity. They also look at the pairing of Captains Kirk and Picard in the film, asking whether this particular double-act—“the most ambitious crossover event in Star Trek history”, as a popular meme might have it—succeeds or fails in attempting to serve two very different masters. Kris & David are guestless this week as we discuss the week that was September 18-24, 2000. We talk about the WWF leaving USA Network for CBS/Viacom and how that would affect not only them but the future of ECW, we talk about the final WWF programming on USA Network leading up to the Unforgiven PPV which saw the bizarre end of the Triple H/Kurt Angle/Stephanie McMahon love triangle. We also talk about the original identity of the person who "ran over" Steve Austin, the Road Warriors in BattlARTS, Maurice Smith & Dan Severn bringing nostalgia to the UFC, ECW having major problems throughout the week, New Jersey regulating “extreme wrestling,” the impending AOL/Time Warner merger, Mark Madden & Dave Scherer going to war with each other, and a totally on-brand WCW section…to say the least. Jackson and Thomas introduce what the podcast will be about. Jackson is disappointed about the CBS - Viacom merger. This month’s main topic is Disney+. Both agree Disney+ is priced to make a splash and that they’ll definitely sign up, even though they’re not the target demographic. Disney isn’t going to let people binge shows, even though polls say people want to. Somehow they end up doing a mini-review of Westworld.Thomas uses a spreadsheet to figure out the ratio of high to low quality shows on Hulu, HBO, Netflix, and Amazon Prime. Finally Mindhunter season 2 is discussed and whether it’s better to binge the season or take your time.Show Notes:CBS + Viacom MergerDisney+/ESPN+/Hulu BundleIGN Twitter Poll on Binge vs Weekly ConsumptionHulu has the most “high quality” shows.Thomas’ video on MindhunterJackson’s YouTube Channel / / Thomas’ YouTube Channel

This week, we Trek Out CBS CEO Joe Iannello's take on ViacomCBS going forward. Then Michael Dorn talks about Star Trek: Worf, Something good FINALLY comes from “Omega Glory”, and “Galaxy Quest” gives US a Birthday Present In Star Trek Online and gaming news, we look at Star Trek Online's UI changes, in-game build testing, and Romulan ships for EVERYONE! In gaming news, another Scopely expands, and our favorite Star Trek ships go Crypto. If that wasn't enough, Dr. Robert Hurt drops by to expand our brains in his newest Astrometrics Report! Of course, as always, before we wrap up the show, we'll open hailing frequencies for your incoming messages This Weeks COMMUNITY QUESTIONS are: CQ: With “Star Trek: Picard” set to air next year, how would you feel about another Next Gen spin-off, specifically “Star Trek: Worf”? AND CQ: What do you think of Star Trek Online opening up Romulan starships to the other factions? Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! TREK IT OUT by Jake Morgan CBS CEO Joe Ianniello Talks about the Future Following last week's news of a CBS-Viacom re-unification, CBS CEO Joe Ianniello sat down with the LA times to talk about his place in - and the direction of - the newly merged ViacomCBS. LA Times Staff Writer Stephen Battaglio asked how the 51 year-old-Iannello was able to guide CBS through the tumultuous departure of former-CEO Les Moonves. Iannello's response sounded very PIKE. “The most important thing is you have to listen and you have to be decisive in what moves you make. In the middle of all of this what I would say is, forget about what you think you know. Go around, meet the people and listen. Take a deep breath and go with your gut.” In regards to the push-and-pull of exclusivity vs. distribution, Ianniello discussed ViacomCBS' approach “I understand the tension between the two. But what I would say is we kind of have the best of both worlds where we're able to redeploy licensing dollars into more content. We want to put enough content in there to make sure we're driving subs. With “Star Trek” internationally we licensed the first series to Netflix and the second one to Amazon. CBS All Access will be the only place to get all of [the “Star Trek” series], so it does differentiate us among its competitors.” Michael Dorn's “Worf” Pitch Isn't Dead and Buried With excitement for “Star Trek:Picard” reaching fever pitch, it could be easy to forget about an older “Next Generation” spin-off pitch - Michael Dorn's “Worf” series. But fear not, the Star Trek alum will NEVER let us forget. Speaking at Keystone Comic Con in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Dorn discussed his proposed addition to the Star Trek mythos “I wrote it in 2012-13, and it's been going like this: a lot of interest, no interest, a lot of interest, no interest ... A guy who was a producer at this one place that I was pitching it came up to me before the meeting and [said], ‘I gotta tell you, your character meant so much to me' ... It fits so well into this new Star Trek universe. It just fits right in there. We'll see.” Fellow TNG co-star and long-time friend of Dorn - Marina Sirtis - added her thoughts, saying “I read [his pilot script] and I called him up and said, ‘How did you do that? He had all the action stuff minutely detailed … I was very impressed with my best friend.” Prop Store To Auction Spock's TOS Uniform If you're interested in television and movie props, or you're just a trekkie with some money burning a hole in your pocket, then we've got a story for you! Film and TV memorabilia company, Prop Store, will be hosting “one of Europe's largest and most exciting Entertainment Memorabilia Live Auctions across two days at the ODEON BFI IMAX in London, September 30th and October 1st 2019”. Nine-Hundred lots of iconic pieces of film and television memorabilia will include Michael Keaton's Batsuit from Tim Burton's 1989 “Batman”, Jack Torannce's “Hero Axe” from Stanley Kubrik's “The Shining”, and Spock's Screen-Matched Uniform from Star Trek: The Original Series! The blue science uniform was screen-matched to Leonard Nimoy's Spock costume in The Original Series season 2 episodes “The Omega Glory” and “The Ultimate Computer” - which first aired March 1st and March 8th of 1968, respectively. The uniform is estimated to rake in anywhere from 50,000 to 70,000 pounds - or about 61,000 to 85,600 US dollars. If you are in the area of Waterloo, London, England, you can check out the available lots at the BFI IMAX from 10:00am to 9:30pm, September 18th to October 1st. Galaxy Quest's 20th Anniversary Collector's Steelbook! On December 25th, 1999, movie-goers - and Star Trek fans - were given a wonderful gift. Galaxy Quest. Star Trek Online and Gaming News by Shane Hoover Upcoming Patrol User Interface Last week, on the Ten Forward weekly community live stream, Ambassador Kael and UI Artist Jo Gianulis gave players an introduction to the forthcoming Patrol UI. The new Patrol UI will be presented as a new tab on the Operations UI alongside TFO, PvP, and Private operations. Players will be able to directly launch any Patrol mission directly from this UI, regardless of their Sector Space position, and will be returned to their starting position when the mission is completed. Patrols are designed for single player action, though they'll support a full team, with no wait for queueing. Just click ‘Launch' to immediately get into the mission. The new system will come with five brand new Beta Quadrant patrols and five pre-existing Delta Quadrant patrols. More of the many existing patrols will be added quickly post-launch. The new Beta patrols are tied to the new Awakening story line surrounding the Mycelial Network and Spore colonies. And for the completists among us, new Accolades will also be introduced with the new system. Test Your Build on Tribble at Starbase 234 According to STO's recent blog, “Starbase 234 has been rebuilt from the ground up to once again serve as a training ground for Alliance starships. This improved Starbase makes extensive use of holographic technology to allow captains to engage in simulated combat in a wide variety of situations.” What this news means for players is a built-in mission that allows them to choose their own combat challenge, specify desired difficulty, and get real-time feedback from STO's own combat parsing functionality. At least for now, the entirely new system will be available only on Tribble via interaction with the Tribble Test Vendor on Drozana Station. Starbase 234 will offer no mission rewards, but presents a unique opportunity to test builds and measure combat effectiveness against a variety of enemies and situations. New Romulus Command Decides to Share the Love After teasing the change in a recent fiction blog, Cryptic announced last week that “[Romulan] leadership has decided it's time to return the trust that has been shown to them, and allow their trusted allies the opportunity to test out their Singularity technology and specialized ship”. Nearly all Romulan ships that were exclusive to that faction will become available to Starfleet, KDF, and Dominion Vanguard captains. The captains need only have completed the Tutorial and, if applicable, advance to the 25th century. If you've been waiting years to put your Federation Captain in command of a Scimitar, well now's your chance! Event UI - Prelude On Tuesday, August 27, the Star Trek Online team officially announced their newest UI update: The Event Rewards Tab. In a post, written by UI artist Joanna Gianulis, it was stated that “The Events now live on their own tab in the Mission Journal. There can now be multiple types of events, each tailored to their own specific goal and rewards.[...] Progress will now work like earned XP where you simply gain it until you reach your goal and then you can claim your reward. [...] All progress for upcoming Events will also now be truly account-wide, allowing you to participate in any of the new activities on any of your characters without having to worry about who had how much progress toward which reward on your account.” Information is still scarce, but we are monitoring the situation, and will likely have more to report next week! OTHER GAMING NEWS Scopely Expands Their Offices Scopely, the developer behind the hugely successful mobile game Star Trek: Fleet Command has announced plans to expand its offices in Dublin, Ireland and Barcelona, Spain. The announcement comes on the back of reports that Fleet Command has grossed $100 million since November 2018, as well as further success in several of its other franchises. According to Scopely Co-CEO Javier Ferreira, “Our Dublin and Barcelona teams play a critical role in the Scopely journey, and we are actively hiring across both markets.” Scopely will also be doubling the size of its Los Angeles offices by 2020. Star Trek Leaves Spacedock in CSC Crypto Space Commander, CSC, launched for Early Access this summer, and now on August 29th, Star Trek will be crossing over into CSC's Galactic Federation. We've introduced listeners to CSC before, a sandbox space MMO built on an Ethereum based player economy. When this event begins on August 29th, the game will sell off the original Enterprise NCC-1701, the first of its six new Star Trek starships, in a six day Dutch auction, starting at $200,000 going down to as low as $0. Yes, we said $200,000. Other new Star Trek ships will be auctioned in turn after that. Additionally, 10,000 Star Trek Supply Crates will go on sale for $25 each. Each crate will contain one Star Trek starship and four random Star Trek modules. In the Supply Crates, you'll have a 90% chance of obtaining a Rio Grande Runabout-class starship, as seen in Deep Space Nine. The remaining 10% of crates will have one of these rarer starships: the Enterprise, Enterprise-D, Voyager, Defiant, or Rotarran. For full details, check the link in our show notes. But what I would say is we kind of have the best of both worlds where we’re able to redeploy licensing dollars into more content. We want to put enough content in there to make sure we’re driving subs. With “Star Trek” internationally we licensed the first series to Netflix and the second one to Amazon. CBS All Access will be the only place to get all of [the “Star Trek” series], so it does differentiate us among its competitors.” Michael Dorn’s “Worf” Pitch Isn’t Dead and Buried With excitement for “Star Trek:Picard” reaching fever pitch, it could be easy to forget about an older “Next Generation” spin-off pitch - Michael Dorn’s “Worf” series. But fear not, the Star Trek alum will NEVER let us forget. Speaking at Keystone Comic Con in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Dorn discussed his proposed addition to the Star Trek mythos “I wrote it in 2012-13, and it’s been going like this: a lot of interest, no interest, a lot of interest, no interest ... A guy who was a producer at this one place that I was pitching it came up to me before the meeting and [said], ‘I gotta tell you, your character meant so much to me' ... It fits so well into this new Star Trek universe. It just fits right in there. We’ll see.” Fellow TNG co-star and long-time friend of Dorn - Marina Sirtis - added her thoughts, saying “I read [his pilot script] and I called him up and said, ‘How did you do that? He had all the action stuff minutely detailed … I was very impressed with my best friend.” Prop Store To Auction Spock’s TOS Uniform If you’re interested in television and movie props, or you’re just a trekkie with some money burning a hole in your pocket, then we’ve got a story for you! Patrols are designed for single player action, though they’ll support a full team, with no wait for queueing. Just click ‘Launch’ to immediately get into the mission. Test Your Build on Tribble at Starbase 234 According to STO’s recent blog, “Starbase 234 has been rebuilt from the ground up to once again serve as a training ground for Alliance starships. This improved Starbase makes extensive use of holographic technology to allow captains to engage in simulated combat in a wide variety of situations.” What this news means for players is a built-in mission that allows them to choose their own combat challenge, specify desired difficulty, and get real-time feedback from STO’s own combat parsing functionality. At least for now, the entirely new system will be available only on Tribble via interaction with the Tribble Test Vendor on Drozana Station. Starbase 234 will offer no mission rewards, but presents a unique opportunity to test builds and measure combat effectiveness against a variety of enemies and situations. New Romulus Command Decides to Share the Love After teasing the change in a recent fiction blog, Cryptic announced last week that “[Romulan] leadership has decided it’s time to return the trust that has been shown to them, and allow their trusted allies the opportunity to test out their Singularity technology and specialized ship”. Nearly all Romulan ships that were exclusive to that faction will become available to Starfleet, KDF, and Dominion Vanguard captains. The captains need only have completed the Tutorial and, if applicable, advance to the 25th century. If you’ve been waiting years to put your Federation Captain in command of a Scimitar, well now’s your chance! Star Trek Leaves Spacedock in CSC Crypto Space Commander, CSC, launched for Early Access this summer, and now on August 29th, Star Trek will be crossing over into CSC’s Galactic Federation. We’ve introduced listeners to CSC before, a sandbox space MMO built on an Ethereum based player economy. In the Supply Crates, you’ll have a 90% chance of obtaining a Rio Grande Runabout-class starship, as seen in Deep Space Nine. The remaining 10% of crates will have one of these rarer starships: the Enterprise, Enterprise-D, Voyager, Defiant, or Rotarran. For full details, check the link in our show notes. We’re already somehow midway through August, two shows away from Show 200, and 5 days away from a full year of Collider Live? Crazy how time works and stuff. It’s like time doesn’t even wait for us to let us sit in each moment and let the wonder of life really sink in. Pelosi tells Dems she wants to see Trump in prison, What Do You Think Those Chances Are? Remembering D-Day, 75 years laterPresident Trump, French Emmanuel Macron and other world leaders will gather on the beaches of Normandy, France on Thursday to commemorate 75 years since the D-Day invasion and pay tribute to the heroes of the battle that was the turning point of World War II. D-Day saw more than 150,000 Allied troops land on the beaches of Normandy in northwest France on June 6, 1944. The Battle of Normandy, codenamed Operation Overlord, changed the course of the war, and ultimately helped bring about Nazi Germany's defeat in May 1945.On Wednesday, in a ceremony at Portsmouth, England, Trump read an excerpt from a prayer that President Roosevelt said during a radio address on D-Day. He is expected to give a speech on Thursday while touring the beaches of Normandy and an American military cemetery in France. Tune in to "The Ingraham Angle" tonight at 10 p.m. ET to watch Laura Ingraham's exclusive interview with President Trump from Normandy.Trump warns not enough progress being made in Mexico talksPresident Trump declared Wednesday evening that "not nearly enough" progress was being made in last-minute negotiations with Mexico, as the U.S. prepares to impose escalating tariffs unless that nation does more to stop the rush of illegal immigrants arriving at the U.S.-Mexico border. "Progress is being made, but not nearly enough!" the president tweeted.Trump repeated his comments while making his way to Normandy early Thursday, saying that Congress and Democrats have been a “disaster” on immigration and that Dems were content with immigration crime. The president also stressed that he was “serious” about imposing tariffs on Mexico and said that many lawmakers do not know what they’re talking about when it comes to tariffs.Trump's remarks came as U.S. Customs and Border Protection reported Wednesday that the number of migrants apprehended at the border skyrocketed to nearly 133,000 in May, levels not seen in over a decade. That number surpassed 144,000 when counting migrants deemed inadmissible -- more than a 30 percent increase from the prior month and double the influx recorded at the beginning of the year. Talks between U.S. officials and Mexico will resume Thursday.Report: Pelosi tells Dems she wants to see Trump in prisonHouse Speaker Nancy Pelosi told senior Democrats on Tuesday that she ultimately wants to see President Trump “in prison,”according to a report. The speaker reportedly made the remark while defending her stance against impeaching the president in an evening meeting with House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler and other top Democrats, according to Politico. “I don’t want to see him impeached, I want to see him in prison,” she said, according to multiple Democratic sources familiar with the meeting. Pelosi wants to hold the president accountable, the sources said, but thinks voters should get him out of office in 2020, after which he could possibly face criminal charges.Rep. Ilhan Omar to 2020 Dem who wants to debate AOC: 'No means no!'2020 Democratic presidential candidate John Delaney wants to debate Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y, on the "Medicare-for-all." Delaney invited the ire of several fellow Democrats, including Ocasio-Cortez, last weekend when he argued that "Medicare-for-all" was bad policy.
