Episode 46 sees me return stole items to Peter Rugman and he returns the favour by stealing the show.  During a routine headlining of the last ever Static Shock Weekend with The Number Ones, Peter Rugman was gracious enough to grace us once again with his presence and once he's done that, goes on to tell us about his award winning, improvised murder mystery show (which is his way of confessing to -actual- murder). I gloss over his homicidal tendencies and instead dive into his beef with Charlie Puth while I break the law by stealing some electricity from a plug in a pub.  Sonic Second follows swiftly with contributions from Counting Crows and Julian Lennon and from there we fall in to Vox Pas with some terrible examples of Irish accents in video games.  Workfarce makes its inglorious return and then after Have I Got Tunes For You we treat you to a song from The Number One's headline set from that night at the Lexington. Whole show is rounded out with a delayed flight and delayed responses from some tired rockers in Stansted airport the following morning.

La, La, La.Autumn 2001. In many ways, it has been a challenging year. Five and Steps split, Hearsay don't.Pop, just like the most boybandish of the latest boybands, Blue is (all) on the rise. The new millennium has most definitely set up its shiny new stall and is fully decked out in its cargo pants, vest tops - and that is just the boys. Mobile phone ringtones were being catapulted into polyphonic ringtones thanks to those boffins at Nokia (who?) so that our train journeys became even more annoying. And a significant cultural milestone was met. No, not the 1000th episode of Family Affairs on Channel 5 or the return of Crossroads (really?). November 2001 saw the release of the 50th volume of NOW! A half century of celebrating the variously compiled world of pop since 1983 and showing no signs of slipping away. In fact, NOW 50 was positively flying out of your local supermarket as the wonderful UK music buying public couldn't get enough of the year's biggest hits (and Victoria Beckham) as the album rocketed its way to a six times platinum No1 position as the 2nd biggest selling NOW EVER!And was it any wonder? 44 Top Chart Hits from Kylie, Westlife, Britney, Destiny's Child. 8 Number Ones, pop, rock, dance, animated building contractors, Austrian Schlager - this had it all! The singles chart was moving faster than a Who Wants To Be A Millionaire audience coughing fit with artists catapulting into (and often back out of) the Top 40 within minutes. 31 number ones in 12 months, with Ms Minogue coming out on top with the years biggest track and FOUR whole weeks at the top. How did we cope?Joining me for this rollercoaster return to 2001 is music compiler, curator and author Lee Thompson. As the head of The Box music channel in 2001 he was instrumental in making and breaking many of these hits - yes he is to BLAME for the likes of DJ Otzi amongst others and openly admits it here!Along the way we discover what was really going on at the HQ of The Box/Smash Hits in 2001, whose Smash Hits award turned up on Lee's desk, Halloween School Discos(!) with Allstars, how Geri and Robbie channelled Led Zeppelin (possibly), how to pronounce ‘iio' (probably) and some of those dazzling sales figures from the latest chart war between Kylie and Victoria (you may want to look away now listeners!)As the latest NOW Millennium Yearbook testifies, 2001 was quite a year - and this ‘flawless' (you're welcome) episode for NOW 50 is a wonderful reminder of some fabulous pop times. Michael Jackson's “Thriller” – one of the biggest hit albums of all time - also marks a quantum change in how rock music was marketed and sold.   Brought up as part of The Jackson 5, Michael saw himself as an entertainer crossing musical genres and categories. He almost single-handedly made music videos into a serious art form.In those days, with typical video budgets around $50k, the video for “Thriller” had a budget of $1m and a top Hollywood director in John Landis. Total recording budget for the entire album was $750k! Our “Album you must hear Before you Die” is  “So”, Peter Gabriel's 1986 blockbuster, produced by Daniel Lanois, an Eno disciple who'd just produced U2's “The Unforgettable Fire”. The hit single from this album, “Sledgehammer” also had a dynamite film clip featuring state-of-the art stop-motion photography.   In Jeff's Rant, he is surprisingly gentle to Justin Bieber.  Who'd have thought it possible? There's lots in this episode to enjoy.  We hope you do!  References:  Justin Bieber, Ricky Gervais, Peter Gabriel, Daniel Lanois, So, world music, Manu Katché, Youssou N'Dour, Sledgehammer, Redeye Records, Don't Give Up, Kate Bush, Big Time, Tony Levin, In Your Eyes, Red Rain, Jerry Marotta, Number Ones, Tom Breihan, Billie Jean, I want you Back, The Wiz, Off The Wall, Quincy Jones, Beat It, biggest-selling album of all time, Singing in the Rain, John Landis, An American Werewolf in London, Moonwalk, Vincent Price, Welcome to my Nightmare, The Black Widow, Steve Lukather, Toto, Eddie Van Halen, Bad, Madonna, Bruce Springsteen, Phil Collins, George Michael, Weird Al YankovichEpisode PlaylistEat ItFatSmells Like Nirvana

The latest episode of the podcast which asks; so how do you set fire to a trophy?Like a man in a cage, we find ourselves trapped in the mid-Eighties, imprisoned in a lurid enclosure of neon and rolled sleeves and appalling Number Ones, with Gary Davies – fresh from a birthday party in a garage in Cumbria and looking well Bisto – in the Mr McKay role. Oh, it's a grim time to be young, Pop-Crazed Youngsters, when the only thing the youth can look forward to is a Giro, a chance to see the frontwoman of All Her Looks in concert and – if you're really lucky – landing a plum YTS gig, like Paul Jordan has. He's making his debut tonight, and we try to work out who he actually was.Musicwise, hmm. Colonel Abrams pops up to deliver a telegram which reads HOUSE IS COMING STOP. Bruce Dickinson paints Paul D'Anno out of history. A pre-codpiece Cameo make their ‘first-ever television debut' (thanks, Paul). Then the BBC runs an advert for a film made by someone from the Cradle Of Pop, followed by a double-whammy of Our Bands. The best duo in Pop history whose name begins with ‘Rene And' pitch up and pretend to be Prince. The Top Ten gets fisted by Billy Idol. Red Box asks us if we've heard the good news about Jesus. A Success Coat containing Midge Ure receives its sympathy #1, and The Kids (and City Farm) have a sensible jig to Five Star. Simon Price and Rock Expert David Stubbs join Al Needham for a good snuffle around the crotch of 1985, pausing along the way to shill their new books, followed by frank discussions about sexual awakenings under a massive poster of Pete Burns, the lamentable tale of Stubbs The Sap, the Great Top Valley Pupil Insurrection of 1985, Fetish Sporrans, being stared at by Morrissey at Chippenham Goldiggers, Quincy Punks, a comprehensive breakdown of the Chicken Dance, and a disgraceful run-in midway through the episode. For episode 41, I thought it best to make the mistake of sitting down with Sean, Eddie and Conor from The Number Ones after standing up from sitting down with them earlier on in Mulligans pub.  Talk circles around our dislikes (bands, sweets, each other), our vague familiarity with household musical icons, (-Gene- Campbell and -Tim- Westerberg), displays of aggression and inadequacy in secondary school (art and woodwork), and finally an excuse for an attempt at a song at the end.

When Tom Breihan launched his Stereogum column in early 2018, “The Number Ones”—a space in which he has been writing about every #1 hit in the history of the Billboard Hot 100, in chronological order—he figured he'd post capsule-size reviews for each song. But there was so much more to uncover. The column has taken on a life of its own, sparking online debate and occasional death threats. The Billboard Hot 100 began in 1958, and after four years of posting the column, Breihan is still in the early aughts. But readers no longer have to wait for his brilliant synthesis of what the history of #1s has meant to music and our culture. In THE NUMBER ONES: Twenty Chart Topping Hits That Reveal the History of Pop Music (Hachette Books), Breihan writes about twenty pivotal #1s throughout chart history, revealing a remarkably fluid and connected story of music that is as entertaining as it is enlightening. THE NUMBER ONES features the greatest pop artists of all time, from the Brill Building songwriters to the Beatles and the Beach Boys; from Motown to Michael Jackson, Prince, and Mariah Carey; and from the digital revolution to the K-pop system. Breihan also ponders great artists who have never hit the top spot, like Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, and James Brown. Breihan illuminates what makes indelible ear candy across the decades—including dance crazes, recording innovations, television phenomena, disco, AOR, MTV, rap, compact discs, mp3s, social media, memes, and much more— leaving readers to wonder what could possibly happen next. Tom Breihan is the senior editor at the music website Stereogum, where he writes "The Number Ones," a column where he reviews every #1 hit in the history of the Billboard Hot 100. He's written for Pitchfork, the Village Voice, the AV Club, GQ, and the Ringer, among others. He lives in Charlottesville, Virginia, with his wife and kids. Donald Trump is trying to do something rare--very rare--in American history: lose a presidential election, run again, and get elected to a second term. Only one president, the underappreciated Grover Cleveland, has ever accomplished that feat. Yet his story remains largely unknown.David Priess invited Troy Senik, author of a new biography of Grover Cleveland called A Man of Iron: The Turbulent Life and Improbable Presidency of Grover Cleveland, to Chatter to explore how the stories of rejected presidents in the past shed light on Trump's effort to retake the Oval Office now--with a whole lotta Grover in the conversation. They discussed how we rate U.S. leaders, the cases of presidents who lost their reelection bids and then tried again, what drove those men to do so, Grover Cleveland's formative experiences, his political offices in New York, how he became president, his predilection for vetoes, his loss in 1888, his comeback in 1892, why Cleveland is largely forgotten, how our views of presidents change over time, how Cleveland's effort in 1892 to regain the presidency compares to Trump's attempt now, and more.Among the works mentioned in this episode:The book Grover Cleveland, Again! by Ken BurnsThe book A Man of Iron: The Turbulent Life and Improbable Presidency of Grover Cleveland by Troy SenikThe book Grover Cleveland: A Study in Courage by Allen NevinsThe book James Monroe by Tim McGrathThe book The Number Ones by Tom Briehan Hosted on Acast. Madonna is the best-selling female recording artist of all time. She has twelve albums that have gone multi-platinum. She's won seven Grammys, and has had fifty songs reach number 1 on the Billboard Dance chart. That's more number 1s than anyone in any category, ever. In this episode, she talks about one of those number 1s: “Hung Up,” from her 2005 album Confessions on a Dance Floor. The song and that album were co-produced by Stuart Price, an electronic musician, producer, and DJ from the UK. “Hung Up” began in part because Madonna was working on a film with director Luc Besson (whose films include The Fifth Element and Taken). But the song also grew out of Stuart's DJ sets. Madonna has a new career-spanning album out, called Finally Enough Love: 50 Number Ones, and in honor of its release, Madonna and Stuart Price told me the story of how their collaboration and partnership led to one of Madonna's biggest hits.
