We're pulling an episode from the archives this week! This episode was originally published in 2020. How important has "play" been in your daily life? Jeff Harry is the king of play (and shimmies). As a coach and international speaker, he travels the world talking to major companies like Google, Amazon, and Southwest Airlines about how to tap into their true selves while embracing their happiness and fulfilling lives. We as adults spend a lot of time pretending to be important, serious grownups, but it's when we let that facade down and just play, that's when the real magic begins to happen. Jeff and I get into how play and travel mix, the importance of unleashing our inner child for both our physical and mental health, and how play can help you find your purpose in life. I hope you walk away from this episode with permission to play more and enjoy a little more "you" time. What was your biggest takeaway from this episode? Will you be allowing yourself more play in your day-to-day life? Let me know by sending me an audio message. How can we look back in history to find inspiration and motivation for our next move forward? Today, Adrien Behn joins me to talk about the incredible journey of Nellie Bly and Elizabeth Bisland, two female writers who raced each other around the world in 1889. Adrien Behn is the host of the Strangers Abroad podcast and the newly released non-fiction narrative podcast, A Race Around the World: Based on the True Story of Nellie Bly and Elizabeth Bisland. In this episode, Adrien gives us an overview of how their incredible adventure began, her creative process for developing the podcast, and how she relates to it as a world traveler herself. We have a deeper conversation around the art of storytelling, finding your voice, and the lessons from this journey that can inspire us today. Encountering animals on our travels is one of the most life-changing experiences we can have, but how can we do it in a more ethical and responsible way? Kristen Diederich is with me today to talk about ethical wildlife tourism and how to be more informed when choosing our animal experiences. Kristen is the founder of Compassionate Travels, which focuses on crafting ethical, wildlife-centric adventures for responsible, values-driven travelers. As an animal rights advocate and well-traveled adventurer, she has first-hand experience on the scale of animal suffering in the tourism industry and the challenges of finding experiences that don't contribute to it. Kristen and I discuss the complex issues around common experiences like elephant riding, taking photos, feeding and touching, and even cultural experiences like dog sledding. She shares the concept of “welfare washing” and why even some of the most seemingly ethical sanctuaries or rescues are still causing harm. You'll learn how to identify truly ethical sanctuaries and tour operators and gain an understanding of the broader impact of mass tourism on animal welfare. How have your thoughts changed on animal tourism? I'd love to hear what you took away from this episode and hope you'll share by sending me an audio message. How can you use travel as an intentional tool for growth? Today, I'm joined by Nina Butler to learn about retreat planning and how you can create transformational travel experiences for yourself as a solo traveler or as a facilitator for a group. Figuring out how to harness the power of travel to transform is what Nina Butler does best. She went from a high school dropout to working and sailing around the globe on private yachts at 16 to eventually getting a Ph.D. in philosophy. She became a yoga instructor and launched her retreat business, InRetreat, which crafts immersive transformative travel experiences designed to open the mind and expand the heart. Nina shares some powerful concepts around intentionality and how to set the framework for a transformational experience. She gives plenty of advice on curating your own retreat-like experience, and we dig into the business side to talk about things like what to avoid doing as a facilitator, how to scout for locations, and the most powerful tools to promote your retreat. Have you ever been on a retreat? Do you want to plan a retreat for yourself or others? I'd love to hear about your experience and hope you'll share them by sending me an audio message. Today, I'm joined by Bernie Harberts to learn how spilling a cup of coffee led him to a life of simplicity, slow travel, and being one of the only people in America to spend over 1,000 days and nights traveling by horse and mule. Bernie is an author, filmmaker, adventurer, and speaker. He prides himself on tackling big trips in small bites, which means using no-frills equipment, asking for help along the way, and not waiting until perfection to take off on a journey. In this episode, Bernie shares his experience traveling by mule, sailing around the world, and riding around Tasmania on a $10 bike. You'll learn about his philosophy around slow travel and why it's the most natural way to experience the world, and we have a deeper conversation about evolving with travel. Is travel essential to your personal evolution? I'd love to hear your thoughts and hope you'll share them by sending me an audio message. Today, I'm joined by author Tom Cotter to learn about his experience taking the most epic American road trip from Key West, Florida, to Deadhorse, Alaska! Tom is no stranger to road trips, having traced Route 66 in a 1939 Ford Woody wagon and following the Lincoln Highway coast to coast behind the wheel of a 1926 Model T. Popularly known as "The Barn Find Hunter," Tom travels around the country in search of hidden classic car collections and has his own series on YouTube with Hagerty Media. Tom shares why he decided to get off the interstate and travel off-grid and what he learned along the way. You'll hear his advice on what type of vehicle setup is best for a massive road trip like this, how one of the "crusty" cowboy towns he ended up in turned out to be one of his favorite experiences, the least impressive spot he visited (which might surprise you), why he hates using a GPS or doing research before he travels, and a ton more. There is no denying that places like Alcatraz and Auschwitz are rooted in dark history, but Disney World? A dark destination?! Today, I'm joined by Dr. James Treadwell to unravel the intricacies of dark tourism. Dr. Treadwell is a Professor of Criminology at Staffordshire University. In this episode, we talk about the sensationalization of true crime, why we're so attracted to places marked by violence, and what actually makes a destination “dark.” You'll learn how we may all be some form of deviant tourist (whether we realize it or not) and ways to be more mindful when visiting these locations. We're pulling one of my top picks from the archive for a second episode this week! What an incredible show today as I sit down (in person) and chat with legendary explorer and adventurer Erling Kagge. Erling is a man of many firsts. In 1990, Erling was the first to reach the North Pole without support as part of a two-person team, and in 1992-93, he was the first to do a solo unsupported expedition to the South Pole. He spent 50 days walking alone across Antarctica without any contact with anyone. He also climbed Mt. Everest in 1994, which made him the first to complete the 3 Poles Challenge on foot. Then, in 2010, he completed a 5-day walk through the sewers of NY to the Atlantic Ocean, and in 2012, he walked the entire length of LA's Sunset Boulevard! We talk about his book Silence: In the Age of Noise, why silence is such an essential part of our lives as humans, walking, travel (of course!), and much more. Do you want to quit your job, embark on an epic adventure, and build an online business? After leaving his successful career as the trainer for the New Zealand Olympic swimming team, Antonio Cala went on to cycle 25,000 kilometers from California to Patagonia, live on a sailboat for three years, and ride a motorcycle 30,000 kilometers from Spain to Cape Town. Along the way, he founded Adventure Fix, the ultimate online adventure magazine packed with the top travel expeditions, wildlife encounters, and remote places from around the world. In this episode, Antonio and I unpack the lessons he's learned from training Olympians, traveling to over 150 countries, and building a seven-figure business while on the road. You'll hear about the moment when he had to decide between his dream job and a life of travel, how his values influence his choices, why cycling may be the best way to experience a country's culture and people, and how hitching a ride on a sailboat led them to a new life path. You'll also learn how he took $500 and scaled his online business to seven figures without any business experience, why it may not be a good idea to tie your business to your personal life, how we underestimate the power of our minds, and a critical mindset shift you need to be successful. There's a common theme and key piece of advice to take away from this episode – how will you apply it to your own life and travels? I'd love to hear your thoughts and hope you'll share them by sending me an audio message.
