The original Flyboy, Hebru Brantley is making art cool and profitable. Growing up as a 6'8 artist from Chicago presented challenges for my boy. Fast-forward, "House full of some Hebru Brantley's" has a healthy price tag attached. I really tried to wrap my mind around why cartoons and comic books are so popular. I definitely lost that argument. We both went to college in ATL. There may or may not be a super stripper character in development after this conversation. What exactly is a splendiferous butt?
Hebru Brantley was born and raised in Chicago. A product of the 80's, Brantley's early inspiration to create visual art derived from the cinematic Blaxploitation and science fiction depicted in the previous decade. His affinity for mythological comic book heroes, Japanimation, and graffiti has strongly influenced his work, and eventually, he began fusing elements of urban society with pop culture. From that, he developed his own unique approach to visual art, layering youthful expression with human emotion, history, and the complexities and challenges of urban life. Brantley creates his work spontaneously and uses an array of mediums such as wood, found objects, spray paint, coffee and tea. He has designed and illustrated for media production and clothing companies and transitioned from graffiti to canvas. He and Zuckerman discuss heroes, why it's harder to access art than music or film, hope, Chance The Rapper, incantation, Adidas and acceptance!
In this episode, Chef talks with contemporary artist and Chicago native Hebru Brantley. He is recognized internationally for his innovative and unique Afro-futurism approach to his artwork in street art and anime. He creates narrative driven work revolving around his iconic characters and uses a plethora of mediums such as oil, acrylic, and spray paint. Collectors of his artwork include, Lebron James, Jay-Z + Beyonce, Lenny Kravitz, and George Lucas. He dishes with Chef on his all plant-based diet and favorite food spots. Produced by Dear Media

Jacob Polhill is the latest guest on “Meet the Artist,” the podcast from the Register Star newsroom where we meet the artist who makes our community a more beautiful place. Polhill, 23, is a Rockford native and Harlem High School graduate. He is currently living on the West side of Chicago while studying industrial design at University Illinois-Chicago. Polhill opened his most recent solo exhibit on Friday, Oct. 4, called “Out of the Box” at J. R. Kortman Center for Design & Kortman Gallery located on North Main Street in Rockford. The show runs through November 16th. Polhill’s work puts on public display the dysfunction and grace that inhabits the human mind. Polhill’s work commonly features a bubbly, humanoid figure in twisted postures that he calls “Lil Doody” who is painted onto clean, bold backgrounds. The figure is often meant to mirror Polhill’s own mental state. Another motif of his work creates a dialogue about bucking expectations. These designs are luxurious, psychedelic memes of repeating lines of text that form a color-shifting snake squirming in mid-air. A recent illustration says, "Sometimes the things that make us feel full and comfortable in the moment are the things that hold us back." His artistic voice draws from rock concert advertisements from the 70s and 80s, Cubism, and an animated style made famous by Disney and Nickelodeon.
