Author and curator Dan Nadel is a hero of mine and a bit of a renaissance man. He was the publisher of the brilliant and influential PictureBox for decades and was a champion of much of what Juxtapoz was founded on but took it to a whole new level of intricate historical research and creating a voice of record for so many artists who time wasn't given them a needle to etch their name in the vinyl, so to speak. We are talking comic book legends, graphic novelists, outsider artists who might have created some of the most recognizable art of the 20th century that the history books hadn't given the full retrospective for. And Dan was going to do it. This year in paricular, Dan is busy. From publishing his newest book, Crumb: A Cartoonist's Life on the career and life of the controversial figura that is Robert Crumb, to co-curator for Sixties Surreal, a rethinking survey the art history of the 1960s at the Whitney Museum of American Art (opening September 24, 2025) and Curator-at-Large for Geroge Lucas' new Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, we had a lot to catch up on The Unibrow's Radio Juxtapoz podcast. We talk about undergrround comic's new resurgence into contemporary art, the making of the Crumb biography and the incredibly pivotal moment of KAWS' collection show at the Drawing Center in 2024.But more than that, I got to speak with someone I admire on his dedication to print, to words, to creating narratives in a world that needs to understand it's visual history. —Evan PriccoThe Unibrow's Radio Juxtapoz podcast is hosted by Juxtapoz editor, Evan Pricco. Episode 165 was recorded in Los Angeles and Brooklyn on May 14th, 2025.
In a recent essay, Artnet writer Annie Armstrong spotlighted a chaotic new force in the art world: red-chip art. It's the brash, chrome-dipped, algorithm-boosted cousin of blue-chip art—and it's booming. In her latest essay, Annie sketches out its archetypal collector: a guy barreling down the highway in a Cybertruck, checking his crypto wallet, queuing up a Joe Rogan episode, and racing to the next art opening—maybe an Alec Monopoly show, maybe a MSCHF drop. Red-chip art, as Annie defines it, is more than a market category—it's a mood. On The Art Angle this week, she joins Senior Editor Kate Brown to unpack this sensibility, tracing its fanbase from crypto bros to Kanye West, and its canon from KAWS's Companions to Daniel Arsham's sculpture of Mark Zuckerberg's wife in Tiffany blue. And yes, as Annie points out, red-chip art is not not related to Trumpism.

In celebration of its 30th anniversary, The Warhol presents KAWS + Warhol, the first exhibition to examine the dark themes present in the work of both artists. From skulls to car crashes, both artists deploy their signature bright colors and pop culture references while also presenting the lurid spectacle of death. The dark undercurrents in the work of KAWS and Warhol are magnified and brought into plain sight by presenting the two artists together for the first time.KAWS will also respond to Warhol's embrace of commercialism by presenting a new series of paintings, sculptures, and installations related to his recent commission with General Mills which inserted his signature characters into the packaging for some of America's most loved cereal boxes including Reese's Puffs, Count Chocula, and Boo-Berry. The cereal works will be juxtaposed with Warhol's iconic Brillo Boxes and his lesser-known series of paintings for children. In response to The Warhol's new initiative The Pop District, KAWS will also present a monumental wooden sculpture in Pop Park, directly across from the museum and visible from its entrance space.https://www.warhol.org/exhibition/kaws-warhol/ Hosted on Acast. Listen in as we dissect the latest city edition jerseys for three of the most prominent NBA teams: Boston Celtics, Brooklyn Nets, and New York Knicks. We begin by analyzing the Celtics' jersey, expressing our disappointment in its lack of city representation and suggesting ways they could have incorporated more elements of Boston. Shifting gears, we move on to the Nets' jersey, which earns our praise for its artistic inspiration from KAWS and its successful evocation of a New York vibe. Finally, we express our appreciation for the Knicks' jersey, but believe they could have pushed the city representation a bit further. In the second part of the episode, we extend our jersey critique to the entire NBA Atlantic Division. We explore the designs of the Knicks, Nets, Sixers, Celtics, and Raptors jerseys, sharing our personal likes and dislikes. Notably, we express our disappointment in the Raptors' design, which we felt lacked effort and creativity. After a thorough discussion, we rank the Nets as our favorite, followed by the Sixers, Knicks, Celtics, and lastly the Raptors. Join us as we navigate through the highs and lows of NBA jersey designs, and discuss how some teams could have better represented their city and fans in their city edition jerseys. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/gear-freaks/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/gear-freaks/support

Westermann: Memorial to the Idea of Man If He Was an Idea is a 3-D documentary film about the life and work of artist and marine H.C. (“Cliff”) Westermann. As a veteran of World War II and the Korean War who struggled with the ramifications of modern warfare, Westermann's dramatic personal history can be traced through his beguiling, surreal artworks. Westermann: Memorial to the Idea of a Man If He Was an Idea explores the themes of Westermann's life and work, including resiliency, hope, and humor. Westermann used art as a means of processing the trauma of war, and in spite of these horrors, he adopted an empathic and hopeful spirit that courses through his artwork and relationships, becoming an inspiration to many young artists. The film features featuring interviews with Ed Ruscha, Frank Gehry, William T. Wiley, Billy Al Bengston, and other artist-pals. The film is executive produced by the internationally acclaimed artist, KAWS, along with award-winning documentary producer Caryn Capotosto. Westermann features music by legendary artists Laurie Anderson (with the Kronos Quartet) and Terry Allen. MacArthur “Genius Grant” winner Tomeka Reid composed the original score. Director Leslie Buchbinder joins us for a conversation on enlisting Academy Award nominated actor Ed Harris to voice the writings of Westermann, the enduring influence that H.C. Westerman had on his chosen pursuit of sculptor as well as his philosophical approach to art and work ethic that continues impact other accomplished artists. You know the song, now get to know the cereal! In one of the most crass breakfast marketing moves of all time, General Mills and Reese's skipped all the pretense and just gave us candy for breakfast. It worked, and the brand had some help from a particularly catchy tune that has since hauled in the likes of Travis Scott, Kaws, AMBUSH, and even Lil Yachty (and his milkcuzzi, which is a real thing - we swear!) It's candy for breakfast. It's Reese's. It's Junk Feud! It's the flavor we savor. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/junkfeudpod/support

WOW!), which is a non-profit organization of contemporary artists committed to community enrichment through the creation of art outreach programs, educational programs and engaging the community in the creation and appreciation of public art. We typically build walls to exclude, however, walls can also represent new zones of possibility, where true collaboration can take root. The festival has done projects in over 20 cities around the globe, such as Honolulu, Taipei, Tokyo, Nepal, Guam, Seoul, Helsingborg, Kathmandu, and others. He is also the co-founder of a creative community center called LANA LANE STUDIOS. He spends his free time teaching art classes at Palama Settlement, which is a community center in an underserved community. He recently co-founded and is the artist of a collection of 8,008 PFP NFTs called FOMO MOFO. Through his work as an artist and curator, Jasper Wong, has devoted his career to fostering new connections through art and reframing the conversations we have about space, both public and private, and how we can use art and NFTs as a tool to craft inclusive new communities. KAWS engages audiences beyond the museums and galleries in which he regularly exhibits. His prolific body of work straddles the worlds of art and design to include paintings, murals, graphic and product design, street art, and large-scale sculptures. Over the last two decades KAWS' work shows formal agility, underlying wit, irreverence, and affection for our times. His refined graphic language revitalizes figuration with both big, bold gestures and playful intricacies. KAWS often appropriates and draws inspiration from pop culture animations, forming a unique artistic vocabulary across mediums. Admired for his larger-than-life sculptures and hardedge paintings that emphasize line and color, KAWS' cast of hybrid cartoon characters are the strongest examples of his exploration of humanity. As seen in his collaborations with global brands, KAWS' imagery possesses a sophisticated humor and reveals a thoughtful interplay with consumer products. He and I discuss how works of art can exist in the public realm, his start, who his characters are and what they mean to him, what it feels like to see your work in the local grocery store, how he spends his time in the studio and who visits him there, and what he cares about and why!

Everyone is talking about NFTs—but what do they really mean for artists and art collectors? Today, you'll hear from Ronnie Pirovino, a widely recognized collector, curator, and appraiser who hails from Denver, Colorado. After his art collection grew to prominence, Ronnie left his successful career in digital advertising to focus on his passion for art. Today, his pursuits encompass a variety of entrepreneurial projects, including NFTs, which he believes are positioned to restructure the creative economy. He has partnered with Christie's on https://www.christies.com/en/auction/trespassing-21280-nyr/ (Trespassing), an ongoing series of auction sales that trace graffiti's influence on contemporary art, and he acts as chief curator at https://lgnd.art/ (LGND.art), an innovative platform built by artists, for artists, at the intersection of art and technology. He is also well-known as the world's largest collector of KAWS artworks. As you'll discover in today's episode, Ronnie helps artists and organizations understand and navigate the emerging world of NFTs and Web3. He's a passionate advocate for making the NFT space accessible to everyone, not just the crypto natives. Tune in as NOT REAL ART founder Scott “Sourdough” Power and Ronnie dive into ownership, security, and the growing responsibility that artists have to actively engage with their audiences. You'll also learn how to meet the challenges of the new creative economy with vigor, embracing the many possibilities it presents. Key Points From This Episode: Why Ronnie believes the NFT space is for everyone, not just the crypto natives How intimidating terminology and a cult aesthetic can act as gatekeeping devices Defining Web3: how it's different from Web2, and what possibilities it opens up for creatives How NFTs have brought young people to the previously elitist practice of art collecting Why the most successful NFT artists didn't rush in, but used the medium to its fullest potential Why Ronnie suggests participating in the NFT community via channels like Discord Ronnie's advice for artists entering the world of NFTs: be patient and view it as an extension of your existing practice Why Ronnie encourages galleries to revise their business models as artists gain more control over their own careers in the NFT space For more info, please visit: https://notrealart.com/ronnie-pirovino
Vista, CA-based artist Dave Kinsey talks about: The gallery BLK/MRKT, that grew out of a design studio he co-ran, and launched as a gallery early in the 2000s in Culver City; his coming from a design and skate and graffiti background, and how he and his artist cohort were all generally making post-design, post-skate kind of work, and how they transitioned from street and/or skate and/or graffiti artists to more ‘fine' art, working across genres; his love and appreciate of KAWS's work, an artist whom he almost worked with, were it not for a disagreement with his partner; how he bought a property in Three Rivers (near Sequoia National Park), where a pipe broke which led to flooding and the ground turning into a ‘milkshake,' and forced him, circuitously, into figuring out how to be a full-time artist; his commercial collaborations with big brands (Nike, etc.) and growing his own work in a more personal way; how and why he left advertising and design, and developing a financially sustainable art career; and how he has collected other artist's work to support their careers as much as his being a fan.
Buff Monster is a street artist who first made a name for himself by pasting thousands of silk screened posters across Los Angeles. Over the 20 years or so that he has been an artist, his colorful Buff Monster character has inspired paintings, stickers, toys, murals, NFTs and private commissions. Born in Hawaii to a family of artists, he went to college in LA to study business, but decided that New York City was the place to be. He is an active presence on social media where he talks directly to his legion of fans eager to hear more about his latest Internet drop, zine or collection of vintage-style trading cards created in homage to the Garbage Pail Kids called The Melty Misfits. We talk about art as business, Kaws, Andy Warhol, his love of heavy metal, collecting art, insider v. outsider, and how to make it in the art world.
