Virgil Abloh changed fashion in the 21st century. His brand Off-White redefined streetwear and youth culture for a notoriously elite and inaccessible industry. And he broke barriers to become the first Black artistic director at a French luxury fashion house. “His whole career is dedicated to opening up the gate for everyone,” said Marc Moran, his long-time friend and collaborator. “And I think that's what made him such a force to reckon with.” Virgil Abloh passed away from cancer on November 28, 2021 at the age of 41, leaving behind a sprawling legacy. But before he took over an industry, he was a quiet and humble suburban kid who loved soccer, skateboarding, T-shirts and turntables. This week on Making, host Brandon Pope talks with Abloh's family, friends, critics and collaborators – including his father, his high school soccer coach and the head of British Vogue – to look back at the life of a Chicago icon. Making tells the story of a different, iconic figure every episode. Subscribe now.

Darnell Strom's professional path has wound its way from politics to Hollywood, a trajectory that started with several globe-trotting years working for former US President Bill Clinton. As partner and head of culture and leadership at entertainment agency UTA today Strom represents totemic cultural figures including Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai and Edward Enninful, the outgoing editor-in-chief of British Vogue, as well as Gisele Bundchen and Michaela Cole. The breadth of his client roster reflects Strom's thesis that captivating, culturally impactful people can come from anywhere. “My definition of talent isn't just an actor, a musician and an athlete,” he says. “It's also a well-known politician or an incredible activist or a rock star CEO or someone in fashion, an artist … I want to be able to represent all those people.”This week on The BoF Podcast, BoF founder and editor-in-chief Imran Amed sits down with Strom to discuss what his career has taught him about the power of creativity and cultural convergence – and the opportunities this is creating for top talents. Key Insights:It was a conversation with the late fashion designer Virgil Abloh that inspired Strom to think differently about his work as an agent and seek out clients from all types of industries. He recalls Abloh telling him: “You should be representing people like me, people who are multi-hyphenate, people who understand that there are no walls between these worlds of culture.” Strom believes social media has irrevocably democratised the entertainment industry, making it possible for even an aspiring filmmaker from anywhere to create a blockbuster movie or a fashion trend that stems from a single post. “As you look at the marketplace, both in fashion and entertainment and media, everything is moving at such a fast rate. And if you're doing the job the same way you did 10 years ago, you're going to get left behind,” he says.Strom believes the changes we are seeing is just the start of a bigger journey. “I think the future of culture is convergence, which we're seeing now. But I think it's just the beginning of it. I think the next 10 years are going to be fascinating,” says Strom. Louis Vuitton is expected to name its Virgil Abloh successor within weeks. Lauren Sherman quizzes Imran Amed on what luxury labels think about when recruiting top designers. Background: Louis Vuitton has spent almost a year searching for a Virgil Abloh successor after the designer died in November 2021. According to sources, Martine Rose, Grace Wales Bonner and Telfar Clemens are among the names that were considered by owner LVMH, and the decision is expected to be announced within weeks. But how do brands like Louis Vuitton even go about finding a designer? “Without the creative energy, without that kind of excitement, there's nothing to sell,” said Imran Amed, BoF founder and editor-in-chief. Key Insights: While all brands have their own personality and the situations that necessitate finding a new creative director differ, the things most brands look for in a leader are similar. Executives have to consider whether they're looking for revolution, like when Gucci tapped Alessandro Michele for creative energy and new ideas, or evolution, like when Saint Laurent tapped Anthony Vaccarello to keep its aesthetic formula after Hedi Slimane departed. A strong vision is the most important thing. But creative directors also need to have commercial sensibility and the ability to work in a corporate environment. One of Abloh's achievements was that he managed to build a community at Louis Vuitton, and engage consumers who had been traditionally excluded by the luxury industry. Additional Resources: Virgil Abloh: Building on a Legacy: Like Yves Saint Laurent, Alexander McQueen and Gianni Versace before him, the late Virgil Abloh leaves a powerful legacy. What does this mean for Off-White and Louis Vuitton? Which Luxury Leadership Configuration Works Best? In luxury fashion, the right configuration of creative and commercial leadership is critical to success, writes Pierre Mallevays. The world rarely sees a creative dynamo on the level of Virgil Abloh—or one harder to quantify. A trained architect, who was born to Ghanian immigrants and grew up in Chicago, he was best known as the visionary men's artistic director of Louis Vuitton (and the first person of color to hold that position)—the position he held when he died at 41 from a rare cancer. But his protean career began blazing long before that. A key early milestone? In 2009, Abloh interned at Fendi alongside rapper and fashion designer Kanye West—a relationship that led to Abloh later serving as the creative director for West's agency Donda. He founded the short-lived yet highly influential streetwear label Pyrex Vision in 2012, selling garments by other brands that he screen printed with his own label's name and elevated to eye-watering prices—a Duchampian gesture that combined appropriation, impeccable branding, and the kind of gleeful outsider-turned-insider humor that marked Abloh's career. In 2019, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago mounted the first museum exhibition dedicated to Abloh's work in “Figures of Speech,” a sprawling show that brought in twice the museums normal attendance and helped cement Abloh's legacy in the realm of fine art. Art and fashion are being redefined by new, creative voices who transcend the old high and low art boundaries. “Visual artists were thought to be less serious if they collaborated with fashion brands or if they appeared in fashion magazines, and now you have folks operating in a real post-medium condition,” says the writer, editor and curator Antwaun Sargent, on Episode 5 of Rodeo Drive – The Podcast. “It's really encouraging to see Carrie Mae Weems, for example, just shoot the latest Prada campaign.”Sargent is the author and curator of The New Black Vanguard: Photography Between Art and Fashion, the acclaimed publication and touring exhibition that is on view at Cleveland Museum of Art through mid-September 2022. He is also a director at Gagosian, a global network of art galleries, and he is currently working on an exhibition developed with the late Virgil Abloh, former artistic director of Louis Vuitton's menswear collection. Abloh's fluidity was influential on the boundaryless creativity today, says Sargent. “One day, one hour, he's designing a dress, the next hour he's designing a sculpture, the next he's making music.”Sargent talks with host Pari Ehsan about the Abloh show, about the dissolving of boundaries between art and fashion today, and about diversity and inclusion and how to do it authentically. “It's less for me about some stale notion of inclusivity or diversity, and more about allowing folks to fully express themselves in this space that they should have always had a claim to,” he says. This fluidity between disciplines – art, fashion, food, publishing – is also visible on Rodeo Drive, where luxury brands and fashion houses that once mainly sold clothing now offer curated exhibition and retail spaces and even restaurants. Field Correspondent Jason E.C. Wright checks out stores including Saint Laurent and its current Rive Droite installation conceived by the house's Creative Director Anthony Vaccarello and exclusive to its Paris and Rodeo Drive boutiques.Rive Droite features surfboards and furniture made in collaboration with Hervet Manufacturier, along with lighters and playing cards, branded headphones, footwear and bags, vinyl, art and design magazines and books. This really expands on how “the art collector is intersecting in the fashion world and those from the fashion side are collecting objects,” says Wright, adding, “it's a beautiful way of seeing this evolution of the stores being more than just a retail space and a point of experience for the world.”Season Three of Rodeo Drive – The Podcast is presented by the Rodeo Drive Committee with the support of the City of Beverly Hills, The Hayman Family, Two Rodeo Drive, Beverly Wilshire, A Four Seasons Hotel, the Beverly Hills Conference & Visitors Bureau, and MCM.Listen to Rodeo Drive – The Podcast and subscribe, rate and review wherever you get your podcasts.Watch moments from the series here and on YouTube.Check back in regularly for what's next in the series.Season Three Credits:Executive Producer: Lyn WinterHost: Pari EhsanField Correspondent: Jason E.C. Our very Special Guest today is Rob Prior - Painter | Director | Producer From his position at the crossroads of fine art and Pop culture, Rob Prior is pushing the boundaries of contemporary art Working alongside international boxing phenom Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, Rob created a pair of breathtaking portraits, which debuted at Art Bazel Miami. While at the event, Rob began painting a portrait of Louis Vuitton designer Virgil Abloh. What happened next is nothing short of historic. Quickly, the Canelo Portraits sold for $500,000. Moments later, a collector purchased the portrait of Abloh for a staggering $1 million dollars, marking one of the highest sales at Art Basel 2022. The Canelo portraits, as well as the Abloh piece, were also minted as 1-of-1 NFTs as part of the sale, putting Rob's works at the center of the art and NFT worlds. Creating his art in front of audiences, Rob paints with both hands, sometimes on two canvases at once, and often with his eyes closed. For his audiences, at comic cons and rap concerts, it is a mesmerizing experience. For Rob, it's just what he does. Once, when asked for a brief résumé, he responded flatly, “I make art.” And in some way, that's true. In other ways, though, it's a profoundly modest understatement for an artist who has been called one of the top intellectual property creators alive today. His paintings of monsters, myths, and superheroes have hung in some of the most prestigious museums around the world. Yet, Prior's creations go so much farther than just the art on the canvas. His diverse experience speaks volumes to his ability to balance the competing demands of almost every creative genre. Painter, sculptor, filmmaker – no creative medium is beyond his reach. He has worked almost non-stop as a professional artist since he was 13, and his commercial works include illustrations and covers for Dungeons & Dragons, sculptures and props for Joss Whedon's Firefly, and original monster creations for Buffy the Vampire Slayer. He's also completed numerous commissions for film studios, including LucasFilms productions, HBO's Game of Thrones, and more than a dozen other publications and production houses.
He recently completed post-production his directorial debut, Painted Beauty, starring Claire Holt and Clifton Collins, Jr. He is currently at work on a second major motion picture. “Work harder than you ever thought you had to, dream bigger than you ever thought you could, and keep trying even when you are told to stop. Live every day like it was your last.” - Rob Prior Instagram: @robpriorart On the web: https://robprior.com

The death of Black designer Virgil Abloh at the age of just 41 has served as a reminder that fashion still has a way to go when it comes to diversity. Abloh, an African American, studied civil engineering and architecture, but was increasingly drawn to the world of music and later set up his own streetwear label, Off White. In 2018 he was named head of menswear at Louis Vuitton, becoming the first Black man to become the lead designer of a major French fashion house. For Abloh, fashion was inherently political; a means of furthering the fight against racism. We took a closer look at his legacy.

Good morning and happy Sunday! This week we're remembering a legend in the sports and fashion worlds — Virgil Abloh, the visionary behind the brand Off-White.On Nov. 28, renowned designer and cultural icon Virgil Abloh passed away from a rare form of cancer — cardiac angiosarcoma — at the age of 41. Abloh, most famous for founding the streetwear brand Off-White and helming menswear designs at Louis Vuitton, was revered by many throughout the fashion, music, and sports industries.Abloh first came to prominence as a creative director for Kanye West and was responsible for acclaimed album covers like those for “Watch The Throne” and “Yeezus.” He also DJ'd and helped propagate the streetwear craze with his early brands Pyrex Vision and Been Trill. Then Off-White was founded in 2012, encompassing and evolving beyond his previous creative endeavors. Off-White was born out of Abloh's “3%” design approach, a premise that assumes a new design could be created with a 3% change to an original. His metamodernist aesthetic was akin to sampling — taking tenets from hip-hop's remix culture to bring innovative products to life. Abloh's work with Nike is especially iconic and the foundation for much of his work within sports. 2017: “The Ten” collaboration between Nike and Off-White, in which Abloh reimagines 10 of Nike's most iconic sneakers with new deconstructed models.2018: Off-White partners with Nike and Kylian Mbappe before the World Cup to create a soccer capsule.2019: Serena Williams steps on the clay at the French Open in a custom Off-White outfit. 2019: Nike and Off-White release the “Athlete In Progress” collection for women's track and field athletes. What will become of the brand now that its auteur is no longer with us?Ownership StructureIn 2015, New Guards Group (NGG) — an Italian luxury fashion production and distribution holding company — became the exclusive licensor of the Off-White brand, though Abloh still owned the trademark.Four years later, NGG was acquired for $675 million by FarFetch, another online luxury retail platform. This meant increased distribution capabilities and greater reach for Off-White, and Abloh's brand equity remained intact.  Intangible assets — “indefinable” non-monetary assets — are a major indicator of Off-White's value. In FarFetch's financial statements, the 2021 balance sheet shows that over 61% ($1.3 billion) of the company's total assets came from their brand value, an intangible asset. One French conglomerate has been taking notes. In August of this year, LVMH bought 60% of the Off-White trademark from Abloh. Now, LVMH indirectly has control over a portion of FarFetch's balance sheet. The licensing rights agreement between FarFetch and Off-White runs through 2026.With LVMH holding majority creative control of the brand, a transfer of licensing rights could be imminent. The transfer would be a positive both for brand integrity and upholding Abloh's legacy. Abloh was the first black creative director for Louis Vuitton and its parent has shown a strong commitment to the designer's vision over the years. They should be a strong purveyor of the brand going forward.Assuming that LVMH does retain the brand and continues to invest in Off-White, what is their potential upside? The Streetwear MarketIn 2019, PWC teamed up with online streetwear and fashion blog Hypebeast to conduct a comprehensive market study on streetwear. The executive summary touted the industry as “one of the most striking retail and fashion trends to have emerged in recent years.”According to the report, the global streetwear market was estimated at $185 billion, or 10% of the entire global footwear and apparel market, at the time of publication. 54% of survey respondents said they spent between $100-$500 per month on their favorite brands.Average age of consumer was less than 25Average income was less than $40,00061% of respondents were most likely to buy sneakers40% of consumers stated their biggest influencers came from sports65% of respondents said Off-White best represented streetwearOver half of the participants were willing to spend 10% of their income on these goods, demonstrating an almost cult-like following. As this cohort of consumers matures into their HENRY (high earner not rich yet) phase, there could be an explosion in the space, as capital shifts from legacy luxury brands to a more youth endemic product set centered around streetwear. Blockbuster deals like VF Corporation's $2.1 billion acquisition of streetwear brand Supreme seem to cement that notion. In 2020, the luxury fashion industry was estimated at $324 billion, per the Italian Luxury Trade Foundation. With shifting consumer preferences and expansion, it's feasible that streetwear, once seen as simply counterculture, could become even more of a behemoth in the mainstream consumer goods space. The Economics of LuxuryMost brands are governed by the basic economic laws of supply and demand. Flip open any economics textbook you'll find the classic chart depicting an upward-sloping supply curve and a downward-sloping demand curve. As the price of a good increases, the demand for it should decrease as buyers seek out more economically feasible goods. There are, however, exceptions to this rule. Consumers see brands like Rolex, or Off-White, outside the purview of standard economic law.The Veblen Effect, coined by American economist Thorstein Veblen, posits that as the price of a luxury good rises so does its demand.Streetwear changed the paradigm of what's considered luxury.Abloh and Off-White have been instrumental in the evolution of that perception.Sneakers, in particular, have taken on a life of their own, with entire exchanges built around the world's most sought after footwear. Estimates from Statista indicate the global sneaker market will grow to $102 billion by 2025.Sports, and the way Abloh's vision of streetwear was embraced by everyone from Naomi Osaka to the NBA, cannot be separated from the story of this category's unprecedented rise.So much of the credit goes to Abloh's prolific output and legendary work ethic. He created a brand of the highest caliber — a Veblen good — and his legacy persists on the court and the runway.Thank you, Virgil.

The US National Security Council's coordinator for the Middle East and North Africa, Brett McGurk, issued the warning over the weekend, according to CNN. McGurk said “military force to prevent” Iran “from obtaining a nuclear weapon” is “a very achievable objective” International talks on Iran's nuclear programme will restart in Vienna on Monday with analysts foreseeing major obstacles to any speedy resumption of the 2015 nuclear deal. *) Opposition candidate takes big lead in Honduras presidential election Left-wing opposition candidate Xiomara Castro has taken a commanding lead in Honduras' presidential election, preliminary results showed. With 16 percent of votes counted, former first lady Castro had taken almost 53.5 percent compared to ruling party's Nasry Asfura at 34 percent. Castro, whose husband Manuel Zelaya was deposed in a coup in 2009, is hoping to become the first female president of Honduras. *) EU border agency plane to monitor Channel migrant crossings Ministers from several European countries have agreed to deploy a plane around the clock, to tackle what they call "migrant trafficking" in the English Channel. The aircraft will monitor the area from France to the Netherlands, starting Wednesday. The British home secretary Priti Patel was disinvited from the meeting after Boris Johnson called on France to take back the people who crossed over to the UK. *) African leaders call for reverse of Omicron-linked travel bans South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has called on countries to reverse scientifically "unjustified" travel bans linked to the discovery of the new coronavirus variant Omicron.

This week is the final episode in our four-part mini-season with Portman Marylebone. Ending on a high, Aleks sits down with Charlie Casely-Hayford, the owner and creative director at esteemed British menswear brand, Casely-Hayford London. Fellow fashionistas will doubtless know that Charlie inherited the brand from his father, the late, great, Joe Casely Hayford OBE, who sadly passed away in 2019 and was one of the most influential British designers of his generation.Today, Charlie is continuing to evolve the business in his father's stead and speaks to Aleks about how the brand continues to be informed ‘by a conversation between father and son'. We also touch on the brand's deft blending of high fashion and tailoring craft and explore how Charlie finds inspiration in both high and low culture – and everything in-between.If you enjoy listening, don't forget to follow us on Instagram @handcutradio, and get involved in the conversation. Virgil Abloh is one of the most interesting designers working in the global fashion industry today. He is the artistic director of menswear at Louis Vuitton, as well as the creative force behind his own brand Off-White. A true polymath, he is a multi-media artist who moves culture forwards and describes his creative process, across multiple platforms, as “taking an idea and dreaming it aloud”. In this, the first episode of Series 2, hosts Simone Cipriani and Clare Press sit down with Abloh to discuss diversity and inclusion, his latest projects, what he calls “mentoring by existence” and his personal creative journey. It’s conversation as a rollercoaster ride swooping from Andy Warhol to Miles Davis and James Baldwin to Caravaggio, fashion students, Abloh’s aims and inspirations, and the role of a designer today. The designer speaks with BoF editor-at-large Tim Blanks about his latest collection, making change and the importance of elevating the next generation of fashion creatives.   When Virgil Abloh first broke into fashion he remembers feeling like a tourist. The designer began his career in architecture and says he struggled to find his place in an industry of insiders. But after three years at the helm of Louis Vuitton’s menswear division, the Off-White founder is now very much part of the establishment. In the latest episode of the BoF Podcast, Abloh speaks with BoF editor-at-large Tim Blanks about his hopes of paving the way to a more democratic and inclusive industry for the younger generation and why he’s launched a TV station. The designer is increasingly focused on lifting up the next generation of young designers, conscious of his responsibility to open up the industry. Last year, he raised $1 million to launch the “Post-Modern” Scholarship Fund for Black students.   Related Articles: Virgil Abloh: ‘You Have to Choose Your Message Wisely’ What’s Off-White Without Virgil? At VOICES 2020. Paul Davison and Virgil Abloh discussed the audio-only social network’s potential impact in the fashion industry with BoF’s Imran Amed. While the influence of Clubhouse has been growing in the power corridors of Silicon Valley for almost one year, the audio-only social network officially hit the mainstream this month, having grown to more than 2 million users and closed a funding round valuing the business at $1.4 billion. Then, on Monday, none other than Elon Musk made a surprise appearance on Clubhouse, driving global news coverage of his impromptu conversation with Robinhood’s co-founder, Vladimir Tenev, about the remarkable rise in value of Gamestop shares driven by passionate Reddit users. But what could the rise of Clubhouse mean for fashion? In December, the company’s co-founder and chief executive officer Paul Davison made his first public speaking appearance at BoF VOICES alongside Virgil Abloh to discuss the power of creating a space to listen and learn — and how the fashion industry can get involved. “All the conversations that I’ve hosted or been a part of on Clubhouse related to fashion in a weird way have been more in-depth than interviews or regular-format media,” Abloh said. “It’s an interesting case study making sure brands have something to say when you can’t escape to creating an image.”   Related Articles: LVMH Is Trusting Kim Jones to Define Fendi’s Post-Karl LookDior’s Air Jordans and the Return of Pre-Pandemic HypeWill Luxury Streetwear Get Millennials Into Department Stores   Find out more about #BoFVOICES  here.   To contact The Business of Fashion with comments, questions or speaker ideas please email podcast@businessoffashion.com.   Sign up for BoF’s Daily Digest newsletter. IKEA is a brand that is no stranger to collaborations. It’s a company that loves to elevate everyday item to artwork, while still making those designer home designs something accessible even for the first time home owner, young adult or student setting out on their own. Spearheading the company’s latest collaboration is Henrik Most, who is the Creative Lead at Ikea. Most is the one who is working hand-in-hand with white hot designer Virgil Abloh, who just presented his first collection as the menswear designer of Louis Vuitton, on a line of cobranded Ikea items. I interviewed Most at the Fashion Tech Forum conference in Los Angeles right after he finished a round table talk with Abloh. At the conference they discussed what the home items they are creating together, which will drop early next year, would look like.  Called The Markerad collection, the designs are all about elevating the anonymous, everyday pieces that we use without noticing and giving them a subtle pop-art inspired twist. Iconic staple and functional items have been injected with a modern designer polish that makes the familiar feel fresh and new. The perfect example of this thinking is the standard white Ikea rug that Abloh re-envisioned. In a very meta move the designer transformed the white rug into an oh-so-familiar  white Ikea receipt (bar code et all)  that actually showed printed on the rug the price of the rug itself. But instead of me trying to explain what it is like to work with Abloh on a creative collaboration, I am going to turn it over to Most to tell you more about this exciting adventure in interior designs.

Rubriken löd: Fashions new force.

If you create a work of art and don’t post about it on Instagram, is it still valid? Is there a direct correlation between the number of followers a creative has on a social platform and the talent he or she possesses? The relationship between art and commerce has become more complicated than ever. As the Internet has given global creatives access to lucrative partnerships with brands and agencies, it seems anyone’s big break is just one direct message away. On the other side of the coin, originality and authenticity is at risk of being trapped in a creative feedback loop, since a saturated visual market bombards modern creatives and consumers with an endless array of images. So how does one still create original works in a world where it seems every story that can be told has been told, or where every perspective seems to have been covered? And more importantly, how does a young creative build exposure for himself or herself when it’s getting harder and harder to set yourself apart from the pack? On today’s show, we speak with Chris Unwin. He launched The Creator Class in November 2014 as an offshoot of his agency, Free. It functions as a cultural incubator to empower a new generation of creatives through education, commercial opportunities, and resources provided by Canon Canada.
