Valorie Kondos Field is the retired head coach of the seven-time NCAA Champion, 22-time Regional and 18-time Pac 12 Champion UCLA Women's Gymnastics team. Inducted into the UCLA Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010, the four-time “National Coach of the Year” was also named “West Region Coach” of the Year and Pac 12 “Coach of the Century” for her solid track record as a preeminent coach. Affectionately known by her gymnasts as “Miss Val,” her reputation is only one reason that 46 former US national team members came through her program and why half of the last two Olympic teams committed to UCLA. Valorie's coaching success can be attributed to her extraordinary leadership and mentorship of young student-athletes, and the way in which she used gymnastics as an avenue through which to teach valuable life lessons, while encouraging individuality and joy. Something Valorie learned from the late John Wooden, the legendary and most successful collegiate basketball coach of all time, who was one of her biggest inspirations, as well as a close mentor and friend. Valorie began her career as a professional ballet dancer and choreographer for the Washington, DC and Sacramento Ballet Companies. Although never a gymnast herself, she's transferred to her student-athletes all she learned in the world of classical dance. The result of which resulted in nearly three decades of coaching one of the premiere athletic programs in any sport, mentoring hundreds of elite athletes, including Olympic champions Jordan Wieber, Kyla Ross and Madison Kocian, among others. Also known as the nation's foremost gymnastics choreographer, Miss Val'smany credits include choreographing and directing a myriad of live variety shows, such as the NCAA Opening Ceremonies for Women's Basketball, a flash mob of famed female athletes and coaches at the inaugural Aurora Games, a Kareem Abdul-Jabbar roast, CBS's “Jump, Jive & Thrive” Breast Cancer Research Foundation benefit, and 26 years of cirque-type shows for SeaWorld's Summer Nights and the San Diego Zoo. Current projects include additional live stage shows, TV specials, events and the development of a theatrical musical, plus the highly anticipated post-Olympic “Gold Over America Tour” featuring an all-star team of female gymnastics champions, headlined by Simone Biles and also featuring Olympian Jordan Chiles and viral sensation, Katelyn Ohashi, which will begin in Fall 2021 and is slated to visit more than 35 U.S. cities, celebrating powerful female athletes in a high-octane, fun-filled experience. She is a dynamic and charismatic speaker with an extensive schedule of“Corporate Coaching” events for national companies including JP Morgan Chase, General Electric, Gucci, AT&T and Jackson National Life Insurance, and has contributed to various panel discussions including Bustle's “Rule Breakers” and the ESPNW Summit. In her TEDWomen 2019 talk, Miss Val inspires people to reevaluate their definition of success. She maintains that real success is developing champions in life, and that in order to motivate success, we need to inspire those whom we lead without compromising the human spirit. As a recent breast cancer survivor, Valorie's positive outlook and hope-filled message is impactful. She empowered her athletes to use their voices, to celebrate themselves, and to enjoy the elite sport that has damaged so many in the past. She also shared her motivating and inspirational messages with the world, with her book, “LIFE IS SHORT, DON'T WAIT TO DANCE: Advice and Inspiration from the UCLA Athletic Hall of Fame Coach of 7 NCAA Championship Teams,” which was released in Fall 2018 by the Hachette Book Group. It expounds on her life philosophy: “Don't wait to see what life is going to hand you, take control of your life and design ~ choreograph it exactly how you want it to turn out.” For more information go to www.marcyllecombs.com

“If we really care about the future of girls in sports, we need to invest in the girls that are actually playing these sports.”Lindsay CrouseA perfect companion piece to my recent conversation with Lauren Fleshman -- and in furtherance of better understanding the issues that swirl around gender, sport and fairness -- today I sit down with an investigative journalist breaking some of the biggest stories in women's sports.Meet Lindsay Crouse.A graduate of Harvard University, where she competed in both cross country and track and field, Lindsay is a senior staff editor and senior OpDocs producer at The New York Times. If you’ve been paying any attention to running news (or just big headlines in general) then you are already familiar with Lindsay’s work. At the epicenter of the conversation that surrounds sports and power, Lindsay is behind some of the biggest sports stories and opinion pieces in recent memory, with a particular focus on the role and state of women's distance running. Some of Lindsay's most popular pieces include How The 'Shalane Flanagan Effect' Works, which examined the former podcast guest and New York City Marathon victor's elevating impact on other women; she broke the story on Nike's refusal to guarantee female athletes' salaries during or immediately post-pregnancy; and she produced the piece in which Allyson Felix told her story around Nike and pregnancy.Lindsay also worked with last week’s guest Lauren Fleshman on her powerful November Op-Ed, I Changed My Body For My Sport. No Girl Should and is responsible for the bombshell opinion piece about the emotional abuse suffered by Mary Cain under her former coach, Alberto Salazar. I Was The Fastest Girl in America, Until I Joined Nike created such a stir, it went on to become the 42nd most read New York Times piece for all of 2019.In her role as a senior producer of OpDocs, Lindsay's many credits include the wonderful film about minimalist marathoner Memo and Walk, Run, Cha Cha, which was recently lauded with an Academy Awards nomination in the documentary short subject category. In addition, Lindsay is an accomplished athlete in her own right. With 12 marathons under her belt, she recently posted an impressive 2:53 26.2 PR -- a feat accomplished (subsequent to our conversation) while balancing the tremendous rigors of her demanding career.I first came across Lindsay by way of her recurring cameos in my friend (and RRP guest from episodes 73, 144, & 174) Casey Neistat's wildly popular vlog. So in 2015, I began following Lindsay's career. As I watched her work mature and profile grow, I eagerly awaited each new article -- and anticipated an opportunity to share her experience and insight on the podcast.Today is that day. And it's everything I hoped it would be. We begin with Lindsay's personal trajectory from Rhode Island roots and attending Harvard to landing a job at the most prestigious newspaper in the world. We discuss maternity rights and the gender wage gap by going behind the scenes on Nike' relationship with pregnant athletes. The controversies surrounding Alberto Salazar and the Nike Oregon Project. The personal stories shared by Mary Cain, Lara Goucher, Alysia Montaño and Allyson Felix. And gymnast Katelyn Ohashi's campaign to secure fair pay for NCAA athletes. We explore the ways in which the sports industry has failed to make way for women. Why almost all current sports science is based on men. And why conventional coaching has led to a sordid history of harming female athletes. In addition, Lindsay recounts what it's actually like to work at The New York Times in our post-truth, 'fake news' world. The unique pressures that accompany breaking big stories. And how she manages to balance everything -- and still kick serious ass in running. The ongoing impact of Lindsay's journalism is immeasurable. So it was an absolute honor and a delight to sit down with her.Note: Because this conversation transpired at the New York Times offices (as opposed to my studio), we did not film the conversation. In addition, it was recorded in mid-October and thus not current with the immediate news cycle.I can't say enough good things about Lindsay and the work she is doing to advance the role and voice of women in sports. I love this conversation. I sincerely hope you do as well.Peace + Plants,Listen, Watch & Subscribe Apple Podcasts | YouTube | Spotify | Stitcher | Google PodcastsThanks to this week’s sponsorsCalm: The #1 app for meditation and sleep with 100+ guided meditations covering anxiety, focus, stress, sleep, relationships and more. The NCAA has been regulating college sports for more than a century, and its ban on student athletes making money from their playing, name and likeness has ostensibly kept the game more “pure.” But pressure has been mounting for years for the NCAA to share some of its billion-dollar business with the athletes that drive it, and a new California law is poised to challenge the old model of “amateurism” in college sports entirely. Today we’re joined by Katelyn Ohashi, a former UCLA gymnast who went viral this year with a floor routine and is now speaking out against the NCAA for preventing her from capitalizing on it.

In Part 1 of this Podcast Special we have Head Coach of UCLA Gymnastics and orchestrator of THAT viral gymnastics' routine by Katelyn Ohashi, Miss Val Kondos Field. Miss Val and I discussed; how she was a ballerina originally but transitioned into coaching in gymnastics, the culture of gymnastics in the United States and how it has gone rotten, we unpacked her philosophies that have been galvanised by real life experiences such as her battle with cancer, her book "Life is Short Don't Wait To Dance" and of course we spoke about Katelyn Ohashi's unbelievable routine. Next week, Katelyn herself will join us on the podcast. Miss Val had a long and successful career in ballet. She studied classical ballet and piano for 17 years. Her first transition into gymnastics came by first becoming hired to play piano for floor routines before moving into coaching. Miss Val sees her job much more as a life skills coach, a mentor than a coach. Coaching is all about motivating change, not dictating change. Coaching from the ego takes the joy out of learning. Miss Val explains her philosophy, her faith and values and how she believes gymnastics teaches discipline like no other sport. Using success in sport as a platform to spread a message with impact. Example of the voice that Michael Phelps has now in spreading message about depression. Miss Val discusses the role of her parents and in particular being brought up without a fear of failure, how this now influences her coaching style and successes. Initially Miss Val quickly made some lessons in coaching after some mistakes and losses. The importance of a shared philosophical base with her athletes and fellow staff. One of Miss Val's lessons in leadership is to surround yourself with people that you trust, rid your ego and when the time is right, allow your team to act and take charge with freedom. Gymnastics is in recovery and Miss Val states the need to educate coaches and parents Miss Val speaks of the abuse cases in US gymnastics and offers some of the issues within the US culture and systems. Miss Val's reports that UCLA alumni all reported that they are stripped of a voice, made into robots and verbally and physically abused. "The after" - athletes report that after you are no longer able to win medals and money, you are forgotten about and no longer valued as people or as athletes. Miss Val discusses the conversations she has had with senior figures in changing American culture, not just sport and gymnastics. Active listening, high performance habits and getting out of the desert so that you can better serve other people. Gratitude is a critical component to UCLA's gymnastic success and is engrained into their daily practice. Life is an adventure that requires you to learn, adapt and move fast Miss Val shares with us the moment she was told she had an aggressive form of breast cancer. Miss Val shares her insanely positive and infectious outlook on being diagnosed with cancer and of her trips to the chemo spa! Val describes how she used time at chemo spa to plan for her next ventures including her book "Life is Short Don't Wait To Dance". Miss Val tries to bring out childlike qualities in her athletes and their routines, first, by helping them find their unique voice. The best performers are joyful, spontaneous and loving in what they do. Steve and Miss Val discuss Katelyn Ohashi's phenomenal routine that recently went viral Katelyn's evolution into the woman embodies her journey and pays tribute to significant influences. Miss Val shares why she believes Katelyn's routine has gone viral. What is next for Miss Val? Retirement, the transition of her identity, learning and experiencing new things. @officialmissval http://officialmissval.com/ Supporting Champions on Twitter www.twitter.com/support_champs Steve Ingham on Twitter www.twitter.com/ingham_steve Supporting Champions on Linkedin, www.linkedin.com/company/supporting-champions Instagram https://www.instagram.com/supportingchampions/ A reminder if you're keen to pre-register for the next wave of Graduate Membership enrolments then you can do so at https://supportingchampions.co.uk/membership/ If you're looking for some coaching support or some virtual team development help to support you to get to the next level in work, life or sport then take a look at https://supportingchampions.co.uk/coaching-mentoring/ or drop us a note at enquiries@supportingchampions.co.uk then you can sign up for a free consultation to explore which package is right for you.

Sport psychologist Dr. Megan Neyer and Katherine Starr from Safe4Athletes join us to talk about the arrest of Olympic coach Marvin Sharp on child pornography and charges of molesting one of his athletes.  We discuss: Gym Myth Busters: Do boys need protection from pedophiles just as much as girls do? Why  a "don't talk back" policy can sets kids up to be victims. Conditions that lead to abuse, both through grooming and organizational loopholes. What the alleged victim might be feeling and how best to support her as a community. Steps the gymnastics community can take in preventing abuse: Mandate moral, ethical and specific behavior guidelines Apply a policy that makes misbehavior, not just criminal activity grounds for dismissal Parent, coach and athlete education about those guidelines because policies without education create cynicism Enforcement by someone other than the owner of the gym External oversight through an athlete welfare advocate and if necessary an external advocate for intervention or accountability when necessary. Why child athletes are especially vulnerable to abuse (This is where Bruno Grandi got something right. Part of his reasoning for raising the minimum age for seniors was to prevent abuse. The older the athlete, the less likely they are to be abused.) The bottom line for owner's pocket books: why gymnastics schools who do not have a comprehensive abusive prevention program in place will go out of business. Why National Governing Bodies (NGB) like USA Gymnastics need to make gymnastics a much less hospitable place for abusers and a more powerful place for gymnasts. Simone Biles hugs Katelyn Ohashi after winning the 2015 American Cup.   This week we are joined by very special guest and World Cup silver medalist, Mary-Anne Monkton of Australia. Uncle Tim, Evan and Jessica recap of the 2015 American Cup in Cowboy Stadium AKA Simone Biles new house: Marta was on the Nastia Cup broadcast doing commentary again and it was fantastic! Oleg gave Uncle Tim the best birthday present ever! MyKayla Skinner crashed her Cheng in podium training and completely missed her hand. (see photo gallery link below). Head Scratcher of the week: How does a gymnast get invited to a World Cup. Read all 16 pages of Rules here or this: The top seven all-around placers at World Championships are invited. If that includes the host country already, the 8th placer is invited. If it doesn't include the host, the 8th spot is reserved for the host. The FIG Executive Committee can invited a 9th wildcard. If after inviting the top eight they don't have eight participants, they then invite placers nine through twelve from Worlds. If they still don't have eight, they then invite each federation in the order they finished in the team competition at World's (up to the eighth place team) to send a gymnast until they get eight. Then the wildcard gymnast is selected by FIG. Do we think it’s fair the way NBC characterizes Simone as unbeatable, as if the pressure doesn’t compound exponentially the more she wins? Debate our favorite moments and best saves of the meet: MyKayla Skinner on beam or perhaps Sam Mikulak on high bar. We give our thoughts on leveraging the host country's music and cultural dances in floor routines. We pretend we are Aimee Boorman and devise a strategy to keep Simone Biles happy, healthy and engaged. We pretend to be Sam Mikulak and devise a plan for him to convert the consistency he had for his NCAA team to his elite career. The High Bar tension controversy: are the men supposed to all use the same tension on the high bar? No, we are asking. We want to  know! Nastia Liukin gets her first grade from us as a commentator. The worst of which was Shelby Hilton from University of Kentucky. We have an update on her and opine that perhaps a little angel named Kylie had something to do with that crash. The Rage-o-Meter ; Trautwig needs to acknowledge that the majority of the gymnasts on the World Cup circuit are in their 20's and that's the new norm. And many women in their 20's make the US Olympic team and even win medals. We launch a new campaign. Katelyn Ohashi. The beautiful art compliments of My Crazy World of Graphics. It's Gym MythBusters: Katelyn Ohashi Edition! This episode is devoted entirely to the Empress of Pajama Pants & 2013 American Cup Champion, Katelyn Ohashi. She puts an end the rumors by answering true or false to the gymternet's burning questions: Is she still training at WOGA, being coached by Valerie, going level 10, injured, starring in a Disney show with Simone Biles and Victoria Moors or been escorted out of Walmart for frightening customers with her comedy pajama routines?

Ever wondered what it's like to travel around the world finding the best talent for Cirque du Soleil? We sat down with talent scout, Marceline Goldstein to ask her all of our burning Gym Nerd questions:  who is the oldest person she ever recruited, are there any injuries that preclude employment, how many years can a career at Cirque last, how does Cirque manage to not piss off federations who may want a competitor to stay in the sport, how they support the disciplines like acrobatics which is so essential to Cirque's survival, is being able to hit at meets an essential prerequisite (you'll be surprised), what kind of support system is in place for longevity and health. Our friend, Evan Heiter joins us once again to chat about the Mexican Open, which US Senior should go, who will win the Stuttgart World Cup, Octavian Bellu and Mariana Bitang's latest contract negotiation/vacation from Romania. Then in our new gymternet news segment, we speculate on Katelyn Ohashi's emphatic message; Nastia once again working with the great choreographer, Travis Wall; why comedian Michael Buckley and Evan should do Kiss & Cry interviews for gymnastics; and ponder important questions like - should men and women cross-compete on the same event (a la Paul Ruggeri on uneven bars) or should artistic gymnastics be done with their routines if they fall as is required in trampoline? All this, plus Danusia Francis's new dismount, Simone Biles yurchenko double back and Utah's dramatic leotard reveal video. Tacky or genius? Next week, our guest will be Olympic Medalist, three-time NCAA champion at Alabama and current the athlete representative on the USA Gymnastics Team Selection Committee, Terin Humphrey.
