According to available data from a Pew Research Center survey, while a majority of Latinos believe in the "American Dream," only about half (51%) of Hispanics report having achieved it. This indicates a significant gap between aspiration and reality, with many citing challenges in reaching success despite their hard work. I am many things: an entrepreneur, professor, strategist, international development professional, mentor, former diplomat, lifeguard, paramedic, linguist (fluent in six languages), black belt in martial arts, former wrestler, father, economist, and, most importantly, I LOVE babies. More than anything, I am passionate about storytelling and believe in the power of stories. They connect us, helping us feel seen, heard, and validated. Through stories and experiences, we find inspiration, learn life lessons, and broaden our perspectives. It only takes ONE story or experience to change your life. Stories remind us that we are not alone and that the world holds vast potential. My purpose is to open up possibilities that help you create the best story of your life and to affirm that you can achieve your dreams—regardless of who you are, where you come from, or your circumstances. WHYLD - Podcast for Bold Authentic People (And Those Who Wish They Were)
Do you know who you are? “You're not white enough for the white people. You're not brown enough for the brown people, and it's our own people judging us.”Summary of what we talk about in the episode:Cultural belonging, financial pressures & mental health - what is it like being a Latino in the US?Vulnerability is strength? From “machismo” to authenticity. What crucial conversations shouldn't you avoid in a relationship?International development work (and beyond) – how can LISTENING be a game changer?Trailblazers – what qualities can first-generation immigrants tap into to make an impact? In more words: Dr. Paul Rivera was raised between worlds. Growing up in the US as the son of a Mexican mother and a Salvadorian father, he spoke English at school, and Spanish at home. And there were more dualities: Blue-collar background, white-collar aspirations. Public appearance, private struggles. Machismo versus vulnerability, people-pleasing versus authenticity. The latter opposing forces became a fight that defined many years of his life. Limiting gender norms and lack of communication stood in the way of his authentic self-expression as well as a fulfilled marriage.“I became a very inauthentic version of myself. I got to the point where I didn't recognise who I was.“But Paul always knew there was more to life and more to himself. He learned to speak multiple languages, travelled to 115 countries, became a father, a professor, and a diplomat (to name just a few of his roles).Today, Paul values authenticity more than people-pleasing and makes sure he has all the crucial conversations with Esther, his second wife. With their mutual business “Be. Act. Paul Rivera is the president and CEO of Def Logix, he built his own company from the ground up. Paul was born in the Bronx, NYC and grew up in both Queens, New York and Dallas/Fort Worth area of Texas. The two areas he grew up in couldn’t be more different and he faced a lot of social anxiety. In middle and high school Paul felt there was a difference between the things he worried about and the concerns of his peers. Young Paul would rather figure out how to improve himself than impress others with something more material. Eventually at the age of fifteen Paul quit school and instead began going to the library. There he spent time reading on his own. He went from reading science fiction to learning about the physics, chemistry and math behind it. In his twenties Paul moved back to New York for college and was working while attending school. Following in his hero Mr. Spock’s footsteps he took classes in: Logic, Philosophy and Computer Science. Paul fell in love with programming after building his own calculator application by using coding. Programming was a way to use computers to build things from his own imagination and engaging his creative side. He got his Computer Science degree in his mid twenties. Paul speaks about the difference between New York City and the Dallas Fort Worth Area and some of the interpersonal differences moving to a less diverse area and not fitting in. Ron asks Paul what the missing puzzle piece that led him on the education path he chose. The conversation between Paul, Ron and Chris touches on different ways of learning and thinking. Electric cars are gaining currency and the question before the hosts of America on the Road is will cars like the ElectraMeccanica Solo, a single-person transportation device, change the way we commute? And will it change the way we deliver pizzas? Those questions and more are considered in host Jack Nerad's exclusive interview with ElectraMeccanica CEO M. Paul Rivera. The interview came after Nerad had the opportunity to test drive the diminutive vehicle. In the road test segment co-host Chris Teague got the plum assignment of squiring around in the 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Coupe. With a price tag of $106,000 and a zero-to-60 time of 5.2 seconds, this is not your grandma's crossover SUV. Meanwhile, Nerad reviews Volkswagen's "halo car," the Arteon sedan. The Arteon brings coupe-like styling and a distinct European sensibility to the market. Though you've probably never heard of the sports sedan, there's a lot to like about it. In the news, we have international intrigue and a bid to create a utopia on a Greek island. The latter is an effort by Volkswagen Group to establish an electric vehicle paradise on a small island in the Mediterranean Sea, aided and abetted by the Greek government. We also take a look at fugitive auto executive Carlos Ghosn's new book that explains why he broke out of jail and fled Japan to go into exile in Lebanon among other tales from his colorful past.

Without a sentinel surveillance system, tech entrepreneurs Paul Rivera and Danny Castonguay believe that the country is flying blind when it comes to the coronavirus outbreak. "We're just guessing. And guessing is a dangerous game when people's lives are at stake," said Mr. Castonguay. Those who are tasked with protecting us need reliable numbers and a way to process those numbers in order to identify trends and get ahead of the virus. According to the World Health Organization, a sentinel surveillance system is used when high-quality data are needed about a particular disease. It can be used to monitor and detect when and where an outbreak starts, and, in the context of COVID-19, provide information that can be used as the basis for targeted lockdowns. Mr. Rivera and Mr. Castonguay are behind COVID Sentinel AI, a platform that can help policymakers and business leaders make informed decisions using self-reported data. Available in Tagalog, with several other dialects on the way, COVID Sentinel AI is mobile-friendly and can be accessed on any device; it also provides an easy way for system administrators to follow up. Compared to e-mail and spreadsheets (the tools that many companies are relying on to monitor the health of their employees), COVID Sentinel AI is more secure and robust. "It's the easiest and most critical way to get population data on how our employees are doing, how they are feeling, and whether or not we need to isolate individual populations in individual groups and individual teams that may be showing symptoms of COVID," said Mr. Rivera, who added that the sentinel platform gives companies the means to process data they are already collecting (think of temperature checks — where does that information go and how is it aggregated?). In this episode, recorded remotely on April 28, the founders of COVID Sentinel AI explain the advantages of using a sentinel surveillance system to BusinessWorld reporter Gillian Cortez. Produced by Nina M. Diaz, Paolo L. Lopez, and Sam L. Marcelo.
“How are you? How have things been unfolding for you during the recent #BlackLivesMatter protests?” “How should artists begin thinking about their marketing rollout?” “Do you think IG Live is played out?” — I wanted to take a few weeks off for the podcast and I thought it was best to not take up any unnecessary airtime from people and outlets that truly need it. And even releasing this episode with Cliff Joseph, who runs marketing at Arista Records, I wanted to make sure that we began the convo talking about the #BlackLivesMatter movement and how important it's resurgence is. We also talked about how Cliff got his start working in entertainment by cold emailing Paul Rivera, a key member of Lebron James' inner circle, and how he made the transition to music marketing full time. Cliff also shines a light on how artists should be embracing their uniqueness at all times. #BlackLivesMatter, please support in any way you can. See HERE for a list of resources. Quarantine Coverage Episode #4: Community We are airing an episode this week that was recorded prior to the incredible rebellion that has erupted in the US following the racist and outrageous murder of George Floyd at the hands of the police. We could not be more proud of the courageous protesters in the streets demanding justice for George Floyd and making is clear that Black Lives Matter. We are very eager to talk about those issues more on our podcast, however we did not want to distract from Black voices speaking about these issues or muddle anything with our perspective on these issues before everyone clearly heard from those leading this incredible movement. On this issue we choose to listen before we offer our perspective. So we are waiting to talk about these protests until we have listened more carefully and processed the insight and perspectives of Black voices leading this incredible moment in history. We hope to have an episode up soon, but won’t post until we feel we have truly taken the time to understand first. So we chose to air the great episode we had scheduled to be released this week despite the fact that it is not talking about the incredibly important issues burning up our streets. This week we talk about community in the time of Covid. We have three incredible contributions from musicians talking about this moment and helping us get some perspective on what punk community is and what we should be reflecting on during the quarantine. The punk community is so reliant on being able to congregate in a physical space together, since we so often don’t live in a single area and it is hard to maintain any perspective when we can’t be with our community, as we are essentially cut off from each other during this quarantine. So we distill what it means to maintain a healthy underground perspective when we are being bombarded by the mainstream and cut off from our community and friends. With contributions from Paul Rivera of the La Armada, Danielle Kolker and Jesse Sternberg of Out if System Transfer, and Glenn Gentzke of Treads and InRod. Plus we listen to tunes from all these incredible bands AND Power Alone.
