The Ankler's awards editor, Katey Rich, thinks Hulu/FX's new dramedy Dying For Sex -- about dying, kink exploration, and friendship love stories -- might be in line for some awards love. Nicole Holofcener's new YOU HURT MY FEELINGS finds its characters grappling with many of the same issues as those in 2001's LOVELY & AMAZING, but with a couple more decades of personal growth informing how they let outside criticism inform their own self-worth. It's a more mature, less prickly film, and whether that's an asset or a liability is up for debate in our discussion of YOU HURT MY FEELINGS, along with how acceptable it is to share an ice cream cone with your significant other in public. Then we look at the two films side by side to see what's changed and what's stayed the same when it comes to Holofcener's ideas about soliciting and rejecting criticism, professional flailing, and the intersection of validation and vanity. And in Your Next Picture Show, we offer up another recent Holofcener to keep the conversation going. Please share your comments, thoughts, and questions about LOVELY & AMAZING, YOU HURT MY FEELINGS, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. This week on the podcast, Izzy and Murtada take a look at Nicole Holofcener's latest micro-melodrama, "You Hurt My Feelings." Julia Louis-Dreyfuss stars as a novelist who accidentally overhears her husband confess that he does not like her debut novel, despite the fact that he'd told her again and again that he loved it. The “betrayal” causes a crisis of confidence in the marriage, and forces her to reflect on the role of white lies and delusion in keeping the peace between two people who love each other. Izzy and Murtada think about YHMF in the context of Holofcener's filmography and give semi-controversial takes on the widely-beloved film. Writer, producer and cinephile Andrew Grissom returns to the podcast to discuss Nicole Holofcener's newest comedy YOU HURT MY FEELINGS starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Tobias Menzies, Michaela Watkins and Arian Moayed. The plot concerns a New York writer Beth (Louis-Dreyfus), who overhears her therapist husband (Menzies) trashing her latest work in progress. YOU HURT MY FEELINGS debuted to positive reviews, critics citing it as one of Holofcener's strongest recent works as writer and director- but will its touchy themes cut too close to home for our podcast conversation? Listen to see if we hurt each other's feelings as we discuss this film, plus diversions into AMC snacks, The French Connection, Planet of the Apes, The Last Duel, Paterson, Regarding Henry, Voyage of the Rock Aliens, and much, much more!
Indie writer-director Nicole Holofcener's observational comedies eschew high-concept hooks in favor of burrowing deeply into a theme from many different angles. Her new YOU HURT MY FEELINGS spells out its intersecting thematic interests right there in the title — criticism, insecurity, and the need for validation — and reminded us of the multigenerational study in low self-esteem that is LOVELY & AMAZING. So we're revisiting Holofcener's prickly 2001 film to consider the many ways in which the Marks women, played by Brenda Blethyn, Catherine Keener, Emily Mortimer, and Raven Goodwin, reinforce each other's insecurities, and how Holofcener coaxes such light comedy out of such weighty themes. And in Feedback, a listener brings up a missing piece from our recent discussion of ARE YOU THERE GOD? IT'S ME, MARGARET. Today, we sit with filmmaker Nicole Holofcener! We discuss the making of her new A24 film You Hurt My Feelings (5:44), her creative upbringing in the ‘70s (15:00), and the Jim Jarmusch film that made her want to become a director (17:25). On the back-half, Holofcener reflects on her early apprenticeship on Hannah and Her Sisters (23:54), her intensely personal collaborations with actors Catherine Keener and Julia Louis-Dreyfus (26:20), and a defining scene from her latest film (32:05). To close, she talks about the importance of supporting writers (36:57), her first day on the set of Walking and Talking (37:33), and why, after three decades, she continues to stay on the “seesaw of art and life” (40:02).See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On episode 2 of Paid in Puke Series 8, we're sitting and talking (sorry/notsorry) about Nicole Holofcener's 1996 debut feature, Walking and Talking, starring Katherine Keener, Anne Heche, and Allison Janney for two scenes. Full disclosure, this was the first episode we'd recorded after our long hiatus, so there are some recording hiccups. Some of us forget our own name and mispronounce the director's surname. Fortunately, the animated series "The Great North" helps us out with the latter issue, as they recently dropped an episode centered around Holofcener's most recent film, "Enough Said". Join us to discuss Big Jeans (both the cat and the fashion trend), consequences for casual cruelty, and the nature of phones in the 90s.
We delve ever deeper into the HCU with what Jared describes as "possibly [his] new favorite film," and Jason as Holofcener's "Avengers movie," ENOUGH SAID. And later, we’ll hear from writer and director Nicole Holofcener on her films Please Give, The Land of Steady Habits and Enough Said. Roger Corman is a trailblazer in the world of independent filmmaking. Often called “The Pope of Pop Cinema,” Corman opted out of the major studio system early on by founding his own production and distribution company, New World Pictures, in 1970. His extensive film credits include cult classics The Wild Angles, Little Shop of Horrors, The Trip, and The Intruder. Corman is also widely known for mentoring a number of filmmakers including James Cameron, Gale Anne, Hurd, Francis Ford Coppola, Jonathan Demme, and Ron Howard. Roger Corman spoke about his 50 year career with Josephson Entertainment president, Barry Josephson, at the 25th Anniversary Austin Film Festival where he was receiving the Extraordinary Contribution to Filmmaking award. This week, Greta and Taylor talk two movies from director Nicole Holofcener: Friends with Money (2006) and Enough Said (2013). They'll get into fractured vs coherent narratives, the 'lead' performances of Jennifer Aniston and Julia Louis-Dreyfuss, and just how much Holofcener made it into the finished product of Can You Ever Forgive Me? Is Nicole Holofcener really the female Woody Allen? Should Scott Caan have taken offense to being cast in Friends With Money? Will Greta ever bother to learn the names of the characters in the movies she discusses on the podcast? All will be revealed on this week's G&T! At the end, they'll do a quick wrap-up of the 2018 Oscars and share their picks for favorite movies of 2018.

After getting her start as a PA for Woody Allen, director and writer Nicole Holofcener gave stars like Jennifer Aniston in FRIENDS WITH MONEY, Julia Louis Dreyfus in ENOUGH SAID, Jake Gyllenhaal and Catherine Keener in LOVELY & AMAZING their meatiest, roles. With her new Netflix film THE LAND of STEADY HABITS, starring Ben Mendelsohn, Edie Falco, Elizabeth Marvel, and Thomas Mann, Holofcener will focus for first time from the perspective of a male protagonist. On this episode off Employee of the Month, Catie Lazarus talks to Holofcener about her about being labeled a female director versus a director, rejecting actors, being rejected, and aging, and directing Yoplait ads to TV shows like Amazon's ONE MISSISSIPPI with Tig Notaro so she can do her own iconic, feature films.
