Welcome to TV Break, where Pop Break's Podcasts Editor Alex Marcus is joined by editor-in-chief Bill Bodkin, and TV Columnist Josh Sarnecky to talk about the happenings in television. Here's the format of the show: The Best Thing I Saw on TV Last Month – Alex, Bill, & Josh talk about a show/episode/event they liked from the last month including HBO's House of the Dragon S2, Disney Plus's The Acolyte S1, Hulu's The Bear, and Netflix's Ripley. News Break – Alex, Bill, and Josh react to breaking news that Skydance has finally completed its long awaited merger with Paramount Global. Streaming Wars – Alex, Bill, & Josh pick a streamer they think “won the month” based on new shows airing/upcoming shows announced etc. Josh gives the nod to Netflix thanks to their conversation starting films like Hit Man, Axel F, Atlas, and Under Paris and their hit series like Bridgerton (plus news that they will be creating their own amusement experience). Bill passed over Netflix to give props to MAX after they debuted their trailer for The Penguin, converted some of their event series into HBO originals, announced Damon Lindeloff will be writing their Green Lantern series, and earned major ratings with the NBA Finals and House of the Dragon S2. Meanwhile, Alex spoke up for Tubi a month after they beat Disney Plus in total viewers for second behind Netflix, and scored a ton of good press in the process. New Series Spotlight – This month, they reviewed Presumed Innocent, Apple TV Plus's adaptation of the 1990 Harrison Ford feature film and the 1987 best selling novel by lawyer turned novelist Scott Turow. The series was created by David E Kelley and stars Jake Gyllenhaal, as a local prosecutor accused of murdering his fellow ADA, played in flashbacks by Renate Reinsve, who he happened to be having an affair with at the time of her death. In today's episode of Bingeworthy, our TV and streaming podcast, host Mike DeAngelo embraces the wacky side of faith and technology with Peacock's newest series, “Mrs. Davis.” Created by Damon Lindelof (“Lost,” “The Leftovers” HBO's “Watchmen”) and Tara Hernandez (“The Big Bang Theory,” “Young Sheldon”), the show follows Simone (Betty Gilpin), a nun who has been tasked with tracking down the Holy Grail by an all-knowing and possibly evil artificial intelligence, referred to by many as, “Mrs. Davis.” The truly bonkers, globetrotting adventure series also stars Jake McDorman, Andy McQueen, Chris Diamantopoulos, Elizabeth Marvel, David Arquette, Ben Chaplin, and Margo Martindale. MV PASSION reviews MARVEL'S HELSTROM, created by Paul Zbyszewski. Starring Tom Austen, Sydney Lemmon, Elizabeth Marvel, Robert Wisdom, Ariana Guerra, June Carryl and Alain Uy. Now streaming on Hulu.
Elizabeth Marvel (Fargo, True Grit, new show Helstrom) chats with Chris about embracing technology, what following the Grateful Dead on tour taught her about performing, and what it’s like living on a farm during the pandemic. Elizabeth also talks about her son’s obsession with Stan Lee, venturing into the Marvel universe and her new show Helstrom, on Hulu now!
This week we are joined by the prolific, multiple Obie Award-winning actor, Elizabeth Marvel. She’s on the show to discuss 2017’s cuckoo zombie/murderer/demon-possession film, The Wailing. Elizabeth initially talks about how this film inspired her latest role as a demon on Hulu’s Marvel show Helstrom. But she also goes on to elaborate on the details of her creative process. She discusses how she approaches acting as a “visual medium,” which is why she always speaks to the DP on set. She also talks about loving to shoot on location because she “wants chaos.” Elizabeth did so much research on The Wailing and she is such a wealth of information on the craft of acting. She has a phenomenal story about working in a cramped townhouse with Ben Stiller and Adam Sandler in The Meyerowitz Stories. And she reveals that the Coen Brothers called people she knew before working with her to make sure she wasn’t an asshole. Please consider financially supporting our show by becoming a Maximum Fun member at Maximumfun.org/joinYou can watch Helstrom on Hulu starting October 16.If you haven’t seen The Wailing yet – you simply must! With April Wolfe and Elizabeth Marvel.
Yes, that Elizabeth Marvel is on the show today. I’m honored she took some time to be with me and with us. Elizabeth is a force to be reckoned with! She has acted in some incredible movies (True Grit, Lincoln) and TV shows (Homeland, House of Cards, Fargo). Her career has been amazing so far. How has she done it? By finding strategic ways to give a damn and by removing herself from the toxic social media environment. Read about how and why she protests in the NYT. Read about the "Cut Piece for Pant Suits” project we talked about in our conversation. ___________________________________ If you need anything at all, text me at 646-328-6414 or email me hello@letsgiveadamn.com. Cette semaine, on enfile les uniformes, prêts à vivre l'intense mission proposée par Sam Mendes. Le réalisateur de Skyfall et Jarhead revient à la guerre avec 1917, et le pari insensé de nous immerger dans son histoire via un faux plan séquence unique. De quoi nous fournir la poussée d'adrénaline suffisante pour affronter les dénonciations de Swallow, de Carlo Mirabella-Davis, sur l'oppression patriarcale et sociétaire. On this episode of Kickin' & Streamin' Podcast, Graham & Jocelyn discuss Netflix original miniseries "Unbelievable," based on an article entitled: "An Unbelievable Story of Rape" published on Pro Publica in collaboration with The Marshall Project. Jocelyn gives a "no spoiler" background of the story, specifically about the character named Marie Adler. Graham & Jocelyn discuss at length the series of miscarriage of justice Marie is subjected to by a string of male detectives and the people she considered to be her family who refused to believe she was raped. The two co-host present the contrasting reality of the other case in the story about Amber, a college student in Colorado who like Marie, was rape in in the same conditions and circumstances, yet her case was believed and investigated by two female detectives who cracked the case and ended up serving justice to Marie. Graham & Jocelyn then moved on to discuss the cast beginning with Kaitlyn Dever, the young actress who played Marie Adler. They marveled at Kaitlyn's histrionics and ability to portray the pain and anguish of Marie Adler in her most vulnerable moments. They also discuss the starring role and acting pedigree of Australian actress Toni Colette (United States of Tara), along with American actress Merritt Wever (Zoey Barkow - Nurse Jackie), in her role of Detective Karen Duvall. During the discussion, Jocelyn shared a personal story of how she felt when a medical doctor dismissed her severe bout of depression as "It's called PMS, honey" and how this relates to law enforcement officers, medical personnel, and other authority figures' reluctance to believe children and women. For Episode 49 we break the no Adam Sandler rule to review the 2017 Noah (Bumbag) Baumbach film The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected). Joining us are returning guests Gail Porter and Heat's Boyd Hilton. If you're a fan of dysfunctional family comedy dramas set in New York you'll be in for a treat with Baumbach stepping in to fill the neurotic void now it’s no longer okay to watch Woody Allen films. Anti Sandler enthusiasts Gail and Helen had different reactions - Gail didn't bother to watch the film but Helen enjoyed the film and would consider re-watching Punch Drunk Love as a result. Starring Adam Sandler, Ben Stiller, Dustin Hoffman, Elizabeth Marvel and Emma Thompson, it’s a fantastic ensemble cast and although re-treads some familiar Baumbach territory (difficulty in parking in New York) and isn't his best (see Frances Ha, The Squid and the Whale...) it's funny in places and recommended for completists. Scores [supsystic-tables id='51'] Scoring 3.85 overall, brought down massively by Gail not having seen it - not a challenger to our highest Flixwatcher rated film What We Do In The Shadows ·but worth a watch. Director Noah Baumbach discusses his new film, The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected), with fellow Director Brian de Palma. Starring Adam Sandler, Ben Stiller, and Elizabeth Marvel, the film tells the emotional tale of three adult siblings who converge in New York to attend an event dedicated to their strong-willed artist father. While there, they must deal with both his fading legacy and the long shadow he has cast over their lives.
The characters in writer/director Noah Baumbach’s films are neurotic, hyper-articulate and often have unresolved issues with their dads. It’s true of movies like "The Squid and the Whale" and "Margot at the Wedding," and it’s true of his latest, THE MEYEROWITZ STORIES, with Dustin Hoffman as the bad dad, and Ben Stiller, Adam Sandler and Elizabeth Marvel as his dysfunctional kids. Bill Camp, the Emmy and Tony nominated actor, has had an illustrious career on stage and in film for over three decades. His most recent turn as "Dennis Box" in HBO's highly acclaimed limited series "The Night Of " earned him an Emmy nomination for his compelling portrayal of an NYPD Detective in pursuit of the truth. Camp brought tremendous pathos and dimension to the role -- as he does to every role he plays.
