In this episode of Ojai Talk of the Town, actor Michaela Watkins joins us to talk about her latest film, Suze, a Canadian indie gem screening at the Ojai Playhouse on March 9. She'll be on hand for a post-film discussion, but first, we dig into the heart of the movie, the revival of the "New Sincerity Movement," and why audiences are craving stories about broken people finding connection.Michaela also reflects on her incredible career including a stint of Saturday Night Live, the LA-based Groundlings, working with the husband-wife duo Dane Clark and Linsey Stewart behind Suze to her collaborations with the late, great Lynn Shelton and acclaimed director Nicole Holofcener (You Hurt My Feelings). We swap stories about mutual Ojai friends, share what this town means to us, and much more.Note: We did not talk about the Ventura River estuary, proposed NFL rule changes or the ill-fated El Dorado expedition of 1559 led by "Wrath of God" Aguirre.Tune in for a conversation that's as heartfelt, funny, and sharp as Michaela herself.
If you thought you hated Valentine's Day, you've got nothing over the serial killer in “Heart Eyes.” No Hallmark cards, 2 hour wait times at a fancy restaurant and overpriced flowers for this killer. This Heart Eyes Killer's MO is to kill couples in different cities every Valentine's Day. You'll see people get maimed in this movie but ubiquitous rom-com movie tropes get pummeled as well in a bitingly witty way, while the blood flows. Olivia Holt plays Abby who is trying to get over a break-up and she has a meet-cute at a coffee shop with Jay, played my Mason Gooding, who orders the exact type of drink she does. Very cliche right? “Heart Eyes” enjoys creating moments like that to just pull the rug out from under them and couples it with a no-holds-barred graphically violent slasher flick. To that end, Abby and Jay eventually find themselves getting chased by the Heart Eyes Killer so this courtship will have to happen while avoiding getting slashed by a psycho. Typical stuff. “Heart Eyes” also stars Jordana Brewster, Devon Sawa, Gigi Zumbado, Michaela Watkins, Yoson An and Jacque Drew. This podcast covers New Girl Season 4, Episode 13 which originally aired on Jan 13, 2015 and was written by Sophia Lear and directed by Bill Purple. Here's a quick recap of the episode:In this episode, Coach lost his status as the guy people want to sleep with, so he encourages Jess and Ryan to come out about their relationship at school. Schmidt is dealing with an ulcer which Nick & Kai try to help him with. This episode got a 8/10 rating from both Kritika and Kelly; Kritika's favorite character was Winston and Kelly's favorite was Coach. While not discussed in the podcast, we noted other references in this episode including:Da Vinci - Schmidt agreed that Nick has always been physically lazy, but went on to say that mentally he was like “Da Vinci in tie-dye.” Dennis Rodman - Nick felt that Schmidt lived by his own rules in college and said he was like “a fat, Jewish Dennis Rodman.”Mars Rover - Ryan's field trip idea was to let the students talk to real astronauts and operate the Mars Rover.Additionally we mentioned in our podcast episode the “Old Girl” spoof with Helen Slayton-Hughes. You know you know Michaela Watkins, but you may not know why. Then you remember (or are told) that she's been in over a hundred sitcoms, dramas and comedies, including a 2 year stint on SNL. And then you remember that you love her, and when you see her latest movie, Suze, you'll remember why. In Suze, Michaela plays a woman who once wanted more for herself and sets about reclaiming it, with the help of her daughter's abandoned boyfriend (played by up and coming Canadian actor Charlie Gillespie). Like Suze, Michaela is a woman whose long overdue time has come. We talk about how she so often plays the friend or the sister to the main character (like her real life pal Julia Louis Dreyfus.) How important kindness becomes as you get older. Coping with menopause, oh, and the trails and tribulations of having ADHD, or working with someone who does. Ahem. Suze is available on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV. A Transcription of this episode is located on our episode page. We love writing and would love for you to read what we write. Actor Sara Waisglass, who co-stars with Michaela Watkins and Charlie Gillespie in the mid-life comedy Suze -- now available on digital and on demand -- steps up for Emerald Fennell's Oscar-winning hot-button thriller Promising Young Woman. The Annapolis Film Festival opens on Thursday, April 4th, and will run through April 7th. It features over 70 films, panels, coffee chats, and parties throughout Annapolis. We had the opportunity to hop on the phone with Dane Clark and Linsey Stewart, the directors, for a Spotlight Film screening at the festival—Suze! Suze | April 6, 2024 | 7:00 PM | St. John's College - Key Auditorium When her only child goes off to college, an empty-nest mother gets stuck taking care of her daughter's heartbroken ex-boyfriend, whom she can't stand (especially when he calls her Sooooze). SNL alum Michaela Watkins shines in the role of “Suze,” a perimenopausal, post-matrimonial woman whose mid-life is stagnating until she discovers a renewed sense of purpose in the most unlikely person. “Gage” (amusingly portrayed by Charlie Gillespie) plays in a rock band called The Emotional Morons and his life is going nowhere. In the grand tradition of other such warm-hearted dramedies about lovably flawed people like The Savages and The Skeleton Twins, this film is an emotionally satisfying story with amusingly relatable dialogue and empathetic performances that perfectly capture the humor in human behavior. (Canada, 2023, 93 min, Comedy/Drama) Tickets and passes are on sale now for the 12th Annual Annapolis Film Festival. Have a listen!

In this 1on1, we speak to Watkins about struggling to change and 'who's your Suze'?
With her new movie Suze now playing in theaters across Canada, the invaluable Michaela Watkins revisits Martha Coolidge's Valley Girl, the teen movie that paired Deborah Foreman and Nicolas Cage for a very '80s love story. Your genial host Norm Wilner hasn't seen this one in a while either.

Michaela Watkins is a talented comic and actor. But when she first started acting, she thought she was going to be an actor actor. The Shakespeare and Ibsen-performing type. But it wasn't A Doll's House or King Lear that made her career. It was the Groundlings. She was almost thirty when she joined the comedy theater that changed the course of her life. Watkins was cast on Saturday Night Live during her time with the group. She thought she'd made it. nine months later, she was fired after one season. But, she's only kept growing. Now, twenty-five years into her career, Watkins is still finding new highs. This year, she's starring in three movies. The latest is an A24 film called You Hurt My Feelings. On Bullseye this week, Michaela Watkins joins us to talk about You Hurt My Feelings. She reminisces on her time in the Groundlings and chats about an awkward encounter with Seth Myers after being fired from SNL. Plus, she answers the question we've all been asking: what does Michaela Watkins ask her pet psychic?
