In this episode of Cult Film School, Adrian and Dion circle back to the 1980s with alien invasions that burst into song: Musical Aliens! They look to the “everything-and-the-kitchen-sink” genre parody Voyage of the Rock Aliens (1984) and the bubblegum brightness of the SoCal musical alien sex comedy Earth Girls Are Easy (1988). They'll discuss the excesses and oddities in both films, the music, the aliens, and some questionable choices, and the joys these musicals bring. Will Adrian and Dion survive these alien visitors? Maybe, but only if they could carry a tune. We're traveling the galaxy to find that universal sound called music this week, as we're watching alines try to woo Pia Zadora in Voyage of the Rock Aliens. New episode! If you’re searching the universe for rock music to take to your planet, it stands to reason that you come to a town where Pia Zadora is dancing to New Wave. Anders Yates returns to BGM’s delight to talk with Bil about the cult classic (?) VOYAGE OF THE ROCK ALIENS! Listen […]
Colin's escape attempt failed, and he's back to making sure Paul behaves himself. This time we've got our dancing shoes on and we're ready to groove with the heavy sounds of, Voyage of the Rock Aliens (1984), the cult American musical starring Pia Zadora and Craig Sheffer. Along the way Colin reminiscences about Dusty Bin, Paul reveals his future Vegas act, and they both help the environment by recycling old jokes.
Les, Kurt, and Jason were so energized by Don Johnson's Heartbeat in the previous episode (the promotional movie moreso than his actual pulse), so they're tackling some more music videos this week. But first, THE Pepper MaShay came to see Les's show, as did Lesley Ann Warren and Lifetime of Hallmark SUPERFAN Samantha (thanks for listening). Then Kurt shares what may be newly specific news about Blac Chyna as it relates to sobriety. Fun fact: Les is kinda dickmatized by Dick van Dyke (a conversation started after a June Squibb spotting). Then it's time to get into 3 different defining (?) music videos of the 80's, starting with Journey's “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart).” The Sherrie of Steve Perry's “Oh Sherry” almost killed this video, but she doesn't have to because it dies on its own (though without a soundtrack since the instruments keep disappearing). Then, the guys took a look at Slade's “Run Runaway” video, complete with a kilt-wearing dude swinging a giant phallic telephone pole all around a well lit castle while lead singer Noddy Holder is doing… something… with his mouth (Jason has a theory). Finally, Les subjects Jason and Kurt to the Pia Zadora and Jermaine Jackson classic (at least in Europe) “When the Rain Begins to Fall” from Pia's movie Voyage of the Rock Aliens. At least there's a vespa chase and some proximity to peak Michael Jackson. Facebook : alifetimeofhallmark Instagram : lifetimeofhallmarkpodcast Theme song generously donated by purple-planet.com

Writer, producer and cinephile Andrew Grissom returns to the podcast to discuss Nicole Holofcener's newest comedy YOU HURT MY FEELINGS starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Tobias Menzies, Michaela Watkins and Arian Moayed. The plot concerns a New York writer Beth (Louis-Dreyfus), who overhears her therapist husband (Menzies) trashing her latest work in progress. YOU HURT MY FEELINGS debuted to positive reviews, critics citing it as one of Holofcener's strongest recent works as writer and director- but will its touchy themes cut too close to home for our podcast conversation? Listen to see if we hurt each other's feelings as we discuss this film, plus diversions into AMC snacks, The French Connection, Planet of the Apes, The Last Duel, Paterson, Regarding Henry, Voyage of the Rock Aliens, and much, much more!
Surprise! We're back! A little of what's being going on (you'll hear more in the episode). Over the summer, one of our beloved meowscots, Memphis passed away after a prolonged stint in the hospital and it really hit me. Hard. It's been difficult to do much creatively and most of my creative energy has gone towards projects with Neighborhood Theater Group when I have it. I honestly wasn't sure about continuing with the show at all but, thankfully, my lovely partner and co-host, Crysta convinced me to keep going. So here it is, this month's episode where we screen 1984's Voyage of the Rock Aliens!

The guitar-shaped spaceship has landed this week with VOYAGE OF THE ROCK ALIENS! This new-wave curiosity is a bright, fun, synth-filled musical that absolutely screams 80s, but it's also FILLED with sexual innuendo - either that or Cooper and Nolan's brains are still stuck in last week's steamy Basic Instinct 2 episode. Either way, you're going to want to come along for the genre-bending ride; this episode (featuring a beer from R. Shea Brewing) is a voyage that's DEFINITELY worth taking.

In which the Mister and our buddy, Zach G, join me in reviewing VOYAGE OF THE ROCK ALIENS (1984), which is available on Tubi, but also for rent/buy on Prime. Written by Edward Gold, James Guidotti and Charles Hairston; the film is directed by James Fargo. The story follows a group of aliens (the band Rhema), who are out looking for the source of rock and roll music. They stumble upon our little planet and land in Speelburgh, a small town with a bunch of teens and the alien leader, Absid (Tom Nolan), becomes infatuated with Dee Dee (Pia Zadora). The story is devoid of plot and not much makes sense but there's a decent soundtrack which showcases Zadora, Rhema and the other featured band, Jimmy & The Mustangs. This is more a film for the nostalgia seekers and not meant to be taken seriously. The film has a run time of 1 h 37 m, and is rated PG, although there is a brief bit of nudity (topless woman). Please note there are SPOILERS in this review. Opening intro music: GOAT by Wayne Jones, courtesy of YouTube Audio Library. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jokagoge/support

Seemingly at random, we chose to review a film neither of us had heard of. Turns out Voyage of the Rock Aliens is somewhat of a cult classic and perhaps deserves more recognition, in some ways. This delightfully bizarre 80s "musical' harkens back to the 50s Beach Movie days and mixes that dynamic with the 80s Music Video revolution. What is born of that is a weird little cult hit that was perhaps one hit song away from being a big deal, guess they should've got Michael instead of Jermaine. Enjoy Wes and Spencer's review of Voyage of the Rock Aliens
Get ready for an episode that's out of this world (pun very much intended), because this week Zak and Aaron are joined by Joey from the So Wizard Podcast for a discussion about the glorious mess-terpiece that is "Voyage of the Rock Aliens." What's it all about? We're not quite sure. Is it a psychosexual romp through a bizarre 80s fever dream? Absolutely. Is Joey to blame for bringing it into our - and by extension your - lives? Would you be tempted to watch a film where aliens travel around in a space ship in the shape of a Flying V looking for the source of rock and roll in the universe? Guitar spaceships! Extraterrestrial new wave bands! Teenage rockabilly gangs! Escaped madmen! Sea monsters! Awkwardly shoehorned Jermaine Jackson videos! The 1984 sci-fi rock n' roll musical Voyage of the Rock Aliens has it all, and joining me to chat about it for this special bonus episode is LA-based funk wizard Chaki. Along the way we delve into the film's fun-but-uneven soundtrack, dish out spicy takes on celebrities, and explain how the 80s were all about Devo and phone booths. RIP Dusty Hill of ZZ Top
Ok, this week I have an update on some previous crowdfunding projects I mentioned, including the successful conclusion to Fat Fleshy Fingers on Kickstarter!! This week's project is a GoFundMe from the filmmakers behind Silent Shadow, Yolit Rios (on Instagram @yolitsvisionary) and Gary Jay (on Instagram @garyjayjr): (Silent Shadow short: https://youtu.be/q4iFFk6PT8M). They're raising money for a new western short with a black lead. Link below, and I'm trying to get them on the show. Also covered, briefly, is the trailer for Animosity, the first film from Brendan Steere. He actually won awards for this film at Buffalo Dreams way back in 2013, but it's only now getting released thanks to the smash hit that was The VelociPastor. I also go on a rant about Michael Epstein (https://twitter.com/MichaelJEpstein) sending me down a rabbit hole of obscure 80's rock musicals (titles and links below) New Projects discussed on this episode: Lucky Lucy on GoFundMe: https://www.gofundme.com/f/lucky-lucy-short-film Animosity coming soon from the director of The VelociPastor: https://youtu.be/mxkgYI4EzXY The Good Exorcist available on TubiTV, Plex, and rental, coming soon on Blu from Troma: https://www.justwatch.com/us/movie/the-good-exorcist Obscure 80's Rock Musicals mentioned on this episode: Voyage of the Rock Aliens: https://www.justwatch.com/us/movie/voyage-of-the-rock-aliens The Apple: https://www.justwatch.com/us/movie/the-apple Rock & Rule: https://youtu.be/knENwlh0FFA Streets of Fire: https://www.justwatch.com/us/movie/streets-of-fire --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/nsfapod/message

137. Voyage of the Speed Racer: Buckle up! We're back to discuss a pair of ridiculously fun and colorful gems. The delightful artist/author Abby Denson joins Christine and Emily to tackle 1984's sci-fi musical Voyage of the Rock Aliens (streaming via Amazon Prime) and 2008's Speed Racer. Expect much ‘80s fashion adoration, Craig Sheffer cheekbone worship, and massive misunderstanding involving race cars and milk. Be sure to check out Abby's new ADORABLE graphic comic, Kitty Sweet Tooth (us.macmillan.com/books/9781250196774) available wherever books are sold. In a very special episode of The Fun Box Monster Podcast, we find the answer to the question, "What if Troma was given a million dollars to remake Grease, but had to keep it PG-13?" When some guys dressed as nuns try to kill Jermaine Jackson in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, Pia Zamora runs off with him and they have a Romeo and Juliet thing which turns out to have been just a music video from another planet. If watching this happen in the first five minutes of a movie is too much for you, Voyage of the Rock Aliens may not be your cup of tea. But if it leave you wanting more, get ready for a fake DEVO, a giant murderous tentacle, a chronically ill puma, the fake Stray Cats, Ruth Gordon leering at dudes through a telescope and a terrifyingly cut Craig Scheffer. This was a special episode we did with my wife Michelle, and she is fully to blame for this episode. Enjoy!

Nobody knows where they came from. They parasite in human beings, takes control and the human change its figure to hideous monsters. Yoji and Sachiko get caught up in the horrific battles of Necro-borg. What will their fate be? It's an all new year with The Horror Junkyard and WTF happened? That's right, it's "WTF January" with the back-to-back full-throttle splatter-ific Japanese cyberpunk science fiction/horror series "Meatball Machine". First up the 2005 movie that started it all, Meatball Machine. A story of unrequited love, expressed through the gory savagery of rubber-suited, bio-mechanical torture machines. Also, Kat gives her review of the 1984 musical turd Voyage of the Rock Aliens. A mess of a movie starring Pia Zadora, and perennial leading man Michael Berryman. Which unfortunately does not feature GWAR-like pain armor and buckets of blood. The 80's eats far too much pixi-dust and barfs out the worst of it right into our faces. It's Pia Zedora showing off why a millionaire had to pay for her to act and Craig Scheffer giving poopy face for 90 minutes. If you want to make sure you've seen the worst musical, you can't miss this pile of no talent. The deal with Voyage of the Rock Aliens is that it's a failed project before it even gets started. Originally it was supposed to be more like UHF instead it's more like Grease 2. You've got Pia Zedora attempting to launch her career by dancing like she's in a blender. On the opposite side of the obligatory love relationship is Craig Scheffer (yes Craig Scheffer from Nightbreed and A River Runs Through It) whose entire thing is to lip-sync over Jermaine Jackson and making poopy-face over and over and over and over again. Believe it or not, the movie has a myriad of other terrible set pieces and acting. Each and every musical number (with the exception of the the Jermaine Jackson "When the Rain Begins to Fall" which wasn't supposed to be in the film) is absolutely atrocious as if you went to the mall and had the "Be in the Music Video" store produce your movie. The Rock Aliens are actually the band Rhema (mostly, the bass player wasn't screen-worthy apparently) who ALL have no business being on screen give us the majority of the musical numbers so I hope you like Devo knockoffs. Add in a couple psychopath slashers, a tentacle monster, West Side Story knockoffs, bad costumes, future makeup, terrible robots, C.H.O.M.P.S. level comedy, Love Potion No. 8 devices and Ruth Gordon and you've got a recipe for disaster that boils over onto your stove, making a permanent stain on your psyche. Be warned, this one's not for everyone and can be a little tough to get through. You may end up squirming in your chair in discomfort. But it's an absolute must if you want to know what the worst musical is, love crappy 80's videos, or love touring IMDB Bottom 100 worthy films. [Every Thursday we post an episode or two from the archive. We've reviewed some wild movies this year. Here's a gem you shouldn't miss] Can Steven Spielberg transport us back to the magic of the 80s? Can the Rock Aliens? Can Jimmy and the Mustangs? Can Pia Zadora? That's what Nate apparently wants to know; why else would he decide to pair the 1984 cheese-fest 'Voyage of the Rock Aliens' with Steve's pick of Spielberg's newest thrill ride? We start off with 'Ready Player One,' then at 28:49 we discuss VOTRA. RHEMA as a six-piece band produced an album called Voyage of the Rock Aliens that accompanied their appearance in the film of that name. The band then broke up, but songwriters Marc and Jeffrey continued to work together on various projects, and have finally now produced a proper album as RHEMA called Shine, drawing on their '80s roots but incorporating modern electronic music textures. We discuss "Rebel Flame" and "The World Is So Small" and listen to "Life in Front of You" from that new album, and discuss one old song, "Combine Man," specifically a 2009 Marc Jackson remix.
