This episode we find ourselves in Denver, Colorado at the Denver Rare Beer Tasting. We are joined by Rick Lyke, founder of Pints for Prostates, Sam Calagione from Dogfish Head, Jim Koch from Boston Beer Company, Gary Glass from Left Hand Brewing and Teddy Pepper from Ozark Beer Company.
Gary Glass was entrenched in the world of homebrewing. What began as a hobby soon turned to a career, where he spent 20 years at the Brewers Association, including a long stint as the director of the American Homebrewing Association. When COVID-19 struck and the Brewers Association laid off a significant portion of its staff, Gary was included in that group and pondered what he would do next. He wanted to stay involved in the brewing industry and thought about doing sales, but an opportunity presented itself at Lefthand Brewing, the venerable Colorado brewery that has cornered the craft market on nitro stout. It wasn't far from his house and Gary was able to begin as a brewer, his first professional job in beer, where he's spent the last nearly two years proving himself, working hard, and learning processes. Earlier this summer that work was rewarded as he was named head brewer. From starting off on malt extract to now running logistics on hundreds of barrels at a time, it's been quite the journey, and we'll start at the beginning. COVID has brought new attention to what many are calling the “mental health crisis" on college campuses. A 2020 study found that nearly 40% of college students experienced depression and 13% have had suicidal ideations. The week Lisa Levenstein talks with Gary Glass, licensed psychologist, and director of counseling and career services at Oxford College of Emory University, about the challenges facing students and the increasing pressure on faculty to address mental health concerns. Glass calls on us to expand our thinking from how to diagnose and treat individuals in crisis to how to build a broader campus community and culture that supports students more holistically. Following the conversation, Levenstein talks with her friend and colleague Tiffany Holland, a lecturer at UNC Greensboro and Guilford College. Holland shares her experiences embracing vulnerability and building community with students in the wake of the pandemic. About our Guests: Gary D. Glass, PhD, is a licensed psychologist who has been working with college students and serving various campus communities for over 20 years. Committed to an interdisciplinary perspective, his professional identity extends beyond “licensed psychologist” to include Educator, and he incorporates skills and wisdoms from his undergraduate studies in English literature and Communication, as well as his deep appreciation for music, poetry, and theology. Read Gary's article for Inside Higher Ed “Rethinking Campus Mental Health” J. Tiffany Holland is a public educator, freedom dreamer, and wayward scholar. Her scholarly passions focus on the expansiveness and complexities of black identity and the potentials of black liberation. A former performing artist and middle-school teacher, Tiffany has taught history and Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Guilford College and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She holds an M.A. in history from Duke University. She lives in Greensboro North Carolina with her partner, her wonder-twin seven-year-old children, and her extended and magical queer family. Gary Glass, director of the American Homebrewers Association, joins us to preview Homebrew Con in Nashville in June and other AHA-related topics.
We're getting all nostalgic on this edition of The Business of Music, our new video and audio podcast devoted to all aspects of the music business. Mary Newland & Richard Baker join Jan Hall and Gary Glass in the studio for a fun look back at how things used to be in the halcyon days of the 70s and 80s. Mary Newland & Richard Baker have been making music together for well over thirty years. After living and working in LA, and individually recording and touring with the likes of Santana, The Beach Boys, Gino Vanelli and Gary Wright, they're now living in South Western Ontario and sharing their love for the music of the Great American Songbook, and the music of 70s as performed by Linda Ronstadt as the leaders of the Blue Bayou Band.
Vancouver based singer-songwriter Chris Ronald joins us on our new video and audio podcast The Business of Music for a fun chat about managing his own career, with a focus on touring and grant writing. He also takes part in our light-hearted 'Round the Table' at the end of the session. This podcast is brought to you by Folk Roots Radio and hosted by Jan Hall with Gary Glass, the video director for the Sun Parlour Coffee House Sessions. Chris Ronald moved to Canada from England in 2002 and has built a great career as a songwriter renowned for his song craft, with an Americana and Canadiana sound that has been described as “Canadian folk with British roots”. Chris Ronald released a lovely fourth album, “Fragments” in 2017 on the Canadian folk label Borealis Records, the follow to the album Timeline from 2014, which earned him a Canadian Folk Music nomination for 'English Songwriter of the Year'. For more information about the music of Chris Ronald, visit http://chrisronald.com.
Josh & Katie Pascoe from Cottam ON make music together as Fresh Breath. Josh and Katie joined Jan Hall and Gary Glass in the studio for the first edition of The Business of Music, our new video and audio podcast devoted to all aspects of the music business. An incredibly nice couple Josh & Katie Pascoe have a wonderfully positive attitude to both life and their music. They describe themselves as a folk-rock, blues, pop and country band with a lot of heart and soul. A fun live band, Fresh Breath released their well-received full-length album “Us Against The World” in June 2017. They've just released the follow-up... "The Big Picture". Fresh Breath always wrap their performances with their fun mantra "Peace, Love... and Fresh Breath". Josh and Katie chat about managing their own career with a few fun questions from Jan & Gary, we call "Round the Table", to wrap things up.

This week on The Session we welcome Solid Ground Brewing, from Diamond Springs, CA. to the studio. We are joined by co-owners KC Sare and Scott Johnson. These guys love brewing clean fermented, continental ales and lagers, but they bring us some big surprises! They've got some big brewery process chops that they use in their brew house that gives them a unique perspective on craft beer. But what sets them apart is their attention to detail and their combination of viticulture and brewing science to create craft beer that defies its own category. We are also joined by one of our favorite homebrew guru's, Gary Glass, to talk to us about this year's HomebrewCon in Providence, RI. And later, we get a call from Dave Marliave, from Flat Tail Brewing, (or Marliavoovooveevov as we like to call him...sometimes) who is on another quest to save the world, while defiling himself. But it's for a truly wonderful cause that's close to our hearts here at the BN and we hope you'll give it a listen and even support his heroic efforts. Learn more about your ad choices. On this weeks episode I jump on the phone with Director of the American Homebrewers Association Gary Glass. Gary’s been homebrewing since 1992, has a wealth of knowledge in not only homebrewing but also craft beer industry. During our phone call we talk about the history of the AHA along with his history with the AHA. We touch on independent breweries and I ask him some homebrewing questions based on things I ran into during my last home brewing adventure. This week on The Session, we welcome Chris Burcher from Wolf Hills Brewing Company, from Abingdon, VA. to the show. Chris talks to us about the rise of the hyper-local brewery and how he pulled back his distribution to focus on his own local market. We have a great, and refreshingly honest, discussion about how focusing on local allowed Wolf Hills to reduce costs and increase profitability. Chris found more accurate data in his local market that allowed him to better predict how his brewery would run when maximizing their local presence. Plus, we get to taste a huge mistake made in the brewery that turned out great, but leaves Chris with a decision to make on what to do with all that beer. Finally, we get to speak with our old friend Gary Glass from the American Homebrewers Association about the organizations 40th birthday, coming up on December 7th, 2018. Gary talks to us about their history, as well as some legislation being dealt with in North Carolina that affects homebrewers. To wrap it up, we discuss HomebrewCon 2019 and how excited we all are that it's in Providence, RI. this year! All in all, it's a fun show with some great info! Learn more about your ad choices. You know how we said we were getting back to our "usual" format? Ha! Today we blow it up again because y'all sent in so many great questions. So many in fact, that we've split the Q&A into two episodes. But first, before we dive into your questions, Denny grabbed a seat on a bus next to Gary Glass, Director of the American Homebrewer's Association to talk about the AHA's new phone app - Brew Guru - and why you want to put it on your magical sci-fi pocket computer. Then we get into your questions. For convenience's sake we've divided the questions into general topic categories. This episode we tackle Fermentation, Ingredients and the Mash. And hey, we even have our first "live" caller! Aren't we fancy? Don't forget to come back for Episode 25 when we tackle even more questions (plus some other cool content!)
