Creating a Family: Talk about Infertility, Adoption & Foster Care
Send us a topic idea or question for Weekend Wisdom.Question: Hello! I've been listening to the podcast for a little while now as I consider my desire to adopt. I've had many models around me who adopted their children, and although the process is difficult, I have a desire to provide a home to children in need. It seems like now adoptions are declining for various reasons, and I'm trying to consider my motivations and whether it is right for me and my husband. One of our considerations is that my husband has a physical disability, and I wonder if there is anyone or data about how likely/quickly it's possible for someone with a significant physical disability to adopt (domestic infant or international). My husband is very physically independent and is the breadwinner in our family. We have not started seriously contacting agencies as we hope to wait a few years before considering starting our family.Resources:Types of Adoption (Domestic, International, Foster Care)Choosing an Adoption AgencyAffording AdoptionSupport the Show. Please leave us a rating or review. Let's talk about adoption and foster care. Some adopt to expand their families. Others personally feel a command to "look after the orphans" (James 1:27). Recently, I sat down with my friend Holly to learn about her journey of foster care and adoption. It was eye-opening and inspiring, to say the least. In the latest episode of the Simply Fit Podcast, I have the pleasure of speaking with Michelle Madrid Michelle is a writer and coach who focuses on helping adoptees and women elevate their life, their mind, body and spirit. Outside of the adoptee community, adoption and those who go through the foster care system really is a subject that isn't spoken about enough. I reached out to Michelle after realising that I personally don't know enough and want to understand more and shine a light on an important conversation that we should be having more. This conversation was full of insights and Michelle's wisdom goes beyond her knowledge surrounding adoption and you are going to take so much away from this episode. In this episode you can expect to learn: Why the narrative we're told about adoption isn't really accurate. What the impact is on those who grow out of the foster care system.. Along with how each and everyone of us can make an impact even if we aren't in a position to foster. So without further ado, Michelle Madrid. If you are self-matching your adoption or matching with birth parents without the help of an agency, you might be unsure how to determine if it is an actual matching opportunity. The most difficult part of the independent adoption process often is determining if it is a match or scam. Then if it is an opportunity, you must determine whether or not this is a good fit, and years of trained social work is incredibly helpful in that process. Creating and sharing your adoption profile is one of the most important parts of your adoption journey, yet one of the most overlooked steps. Most hopeful adoptive families will create their profiles and then not spend dedicated time sharing their adoption profiles even if there are free options. It doesn't matter if you are self-matching, independently matching, or matching with an adoption agency, an adoption attorney, or a consultant.
