Every parent dreams of setting their kids up for success—protecting them from pain, offering them opportunities, and giving them the tools to thrive. But what if, in trying to shield our kids from struggles, we're actually limiting their potential? What if you could give your child a superpower—a mindset that turns challenges into opportunities, builds confidence through healthy struggles, and equips them to create value for themselves and others? I had my first paper route in the 3rd grade! Getting up early, rain or shine, instilled a work ethic in me and taught me so much more than an allowance ever did. That was back in the days when you had to collect the money from your customers by going door to door. In today's episode, we're diving into the principles of Value Creation Kid, a proven roadmap to raising financially competent, responsible, and resilient kids. Joining us is Lee Benson, a seasoned entrepreneur with over 25 years of experience as a CEO. Lee grew and sold his company, Able Aerospace, for 9-figures and now helps low income families thrive. Lee shares practical insights, including: How letting kids have healthy struggles builds resilience. Lee's childhood was rough and full of Ace's Adverse Childhood Expereinces, but despite this he learned how to turn struggles into capabilities and confidence. (See the 10 Ace questions below.) 55+ “Home Gigs (jobs)” to help kids earn, save, spend, and learn financial independence. Lee's struggles and expertise, combined with actionable steps for parents, will inspire you to equip your kids with the confidence and grit to succeed in the real world. Did they make you feel afraid you might be physically hurt? Physical Abuse: Did a parent or other adult in the household often push, grab, slap, or throw something at you? Or ever hit you so hard that you had marks or were injured? Sexual Abuse: Did an adult or older person ever touch you inappropriately, try to make you touch them sexually, or force you into sexual contact? Neglect Emotional Neglect: Did you often feel that no one in your family loved you or thought you were important or special? Or that your family didn't look out for or support each other? Physical Neglect: Did you often feel that you didn't have enough to eat, had to wear dirty clothes, or had no one to protect you? Or that your parents were too drunk or high to care for you or take you to the doctor if needed? Household Dysfunction Parental Separation or Divorce: Were your parents ever separated or divorced? Domestic Violence: Did your mother or stepmother (or another household adult) often get pushed, grabbed, slapped, or have something thrown at them? Or did they ever get hit, kicked, or threatened with a weapon? Substance Abuse: Did you live with anyone who was a problem drinker or alcoholic, or who used drugs? Mental Illness: Was a household member often depressed, mentally ill, or suicidal? Incarceration: Did a household member go to prison? How the ACE Score Works Each "yes" response equals 1 point, resulting in a total ACE score ranging from 0 to 10. Higher scores indicate a greater exposure to childhood adversity, which is associated with an increased risk of long-term health, emotional, and behavioral challenges. She has over 10,000 hours of experience in education, both in the classroom and corporate sector. Even though she holds a Master's degree in education, she struggled to understand her neurodivergent and oppositional kids. Inspired by her experience using Myers Briggs and the Enneagram with business teams, she spent over a decade researching temperament pattens to help family teams. She is a best-selling author and host of the Not So Normal Parenting podcast. Her podcast is entitled Not So Normal Parenting because not only are she and her kids neurodivergent but some of her life experiences, such as driving off a cliff her wedding night and going viral for embarrassing her seventeen-year old son by dancing on a snowy and jammed interstate, fall into that category. In addition to being talked about by Hoda Kotb, the BackStreet Boys, and Princess Kate, even U2 singer Bono mentioned the incident in his autobiography. Because Wendy herself has struggled as a helicopter parent, a cranky parent and an embarrassing parent, she wants to help other parents struggle……..a little bit less!

In this eye-opening episode, Keith McCurdy joins BaseCamp Live to expose the cultural shifts that have led to skyrocketing anxiety and emotional fragility in children. Today's episode couldn't be more timely. We're exploring the important topic of resilience and how to support our kids in navigating challenging times. Joining me is Dr. Tovah Klein, author of the insightful new book Raising Resilience: How to Help Our Children Thrive in Times of Uncertainty. Dr. Klein is a renowned developmental psychologist and the director of the Barnard College Center for Toddler Development. With over 30 years of experience, she's dedicated her career to understanding what children need to thrive, regardless of their circumstances. She's a sought-after advisor to children's media and organizations, including National Geographic Kids and Apple TV+. In her latest book, Tovah explains why resilience isn't a fixed trait but a skill that can be nurtured through supportive relationships and intentional parenting practices. And so in today's conversation, we unpack what it means to be an anchor and container for our children, explore the five pillars of resilience—security and trust, emotional regulation, agency, social connection, and self-acceptance—and discuss why understanding our own emotional baggage is key to helping our kids build resilience. I love the way Tovah frames resiliency as a skill that is built together between parents and children because so often we think of it as an individual characteristic. And as you'll hear in this conversation, it all starts with the connection between us. There's so much food for thought and hope. About Dr. Tovah Klein Tovah P. Klein, Ph.D. is the author of Raising Resilience: How to Help Our Children Thrive in Times of Uncertainty and How Toddlers Thrive: What Parents Can Do Today for Children Ages 2-5 to Plant the Seeds of Lifelong Success. Working worldwide with programs addressing the needs of children, she is highly sought after as a developmental expert on a range of timely topics and an advisor to children's media and organizations, including National Geographic Kids, Apple TV+, the Children's Museum of Manhattan, the Hunts Point Alliance for Children, Room to Grow, and Ubuntu Pathways South Africa. As parents, one of our primary goals is to raise children who are self-assured, adaptable, and equipped to navigate the challenges of adulthood – but striking the right balance between support and challenge is no easy feat. In this episode, we explore this delicate equilibrium of parenthood, sharing our personal experiences at different stages of the journey. We emphasize the importance of repairing ruptures in parent-child relationships to build emotional intelligence. We also consider how to set appropriate boundaries, examining the phenomenon of parental over-protection. As the world rapidly evolves for the next generation, we open dialogue about preparing children for the uncertainties ahead. Our conversation underscores the value of honest self-assessment by parents, community feedback, and open communication with children. Ultimately, asking tough questions – "How is my kid really doing?" "How am I doing as a parent?" – can be daunting, but we believe these introspective pauses are essential for growth. Do you have blood on your hands? Are Christian beliefs motivating trans people to commit the unthinkable act of suicide? The alarming prevalence of depression among people battling gender dysphoria has prompted advocates of the transgender movement to demand political action, proposing that the solution lies in the push for "trans rights". But what happens when the pursuit of these "rights" collide with basic human rights? This week, Frank tackles a very sensitive question from a listener regarding the outcry for more "trans rights" by the parents of a young trans person who tragically decided to end his life prematurely. As Frank shares some of the details of this heartbreaking story, he'll address the erroneous notion that being in opposition to "trans rights" is what caused the untimely death of their child. During this podcast episode, Frank will answer questions like: What are trans rights? How do they collide with basic human rights? What are the main conditions surrounding trans suicide? Does social acceptance lessen the likelihood of suicide among transgender people? How did a high school in Virginia fail in protecting not one, but two teenage victims of sexual assault? How do trans activists bully people? What is the best way to love someone struggling with gender dysphoria? Is it approval? Frank will also highlight a few examples of how "trans rights" have compromised the overall safety and privacy of young women and briefly discuss how so-called gender affirming care has contributed to the current mental health crisis. Later in the episode, Frank will identify the root cause of the staggering suicide rates among transgender people and explore solutions that can offer true healing for those within the trans community. To learn more about the major flaws of transgender ideology, be sure to pick up the updated and expanded copy of Frank's book, 'Correct, Not Politically Correct: About Same-Sex Marriage and Transgenderism'.
