Mary Shelley was just 18 years old when the idea for Frankenstein struck her on a rainy night in Geneva, Switzerland. Cooped up on vacation with nonstop rain, famous poet Lord Byron had challenged the group of literary geniuses to come up with a ghost story. Mary struggled. She could think of nothing. Then one night, as she struggled to sleep, she was hit with what she referred to as a "waking dream." What followed would come to define the science fiction genre, both inspiring and horrifying readers for centuries to come. But who was Mary Shelley, the creator? Who was she to bear such a creature? How did she manage to embody all that horror, that pain, that grotesque abnormality, gothic morbidity? Well, the more you know about the life of Mary Shelley, the more it all makes sense. It doesn't often happen, maybe every few years, but Nashville got walloped with a big winter storm this week. It's nothing like the weather they get in places like Buffalo, but the 8 inches of snow we got this week nearly shut the town down. Then, two days after the snow, we were hit with a day of freezing rain. That means most people haven't left the house for days. Years ago, being cooped up in my house would make me stir crazy. But in recent years, I can go weeks without leaving the house if necessary. The pandemic changed everything... Post Malone is the gift that keeps on giving. He released his new single "Cooped Up" today, and it's just as good as you'd expect. The song features Roddy Ricch and has a catchy beat that'll have you singing along before you know it. Jacqueline Jax gives you her first reaction to the music video before writing her review for new Music Release Radar. Post Malone and Roddy Ricch Cooped Up Reaction Video The track is about Post's struggle with fame and how he feels like he's "cooped up" in a world of people who don't understand him. There are some lines that really stand out: "My life's been one big lie/I'm so sick of this place/I'm just trying to live my life" If only we could all relate to those lyrics! It's clear from this track that Post Malone is really trying to push himself as an artist but still staying true to his roots. We can't wait for more new music from him! Post Malone made his musical guest debut on Saturday Night Live‘s Selena Gomez-hosted episode this weekend, where he began with a performance of “Cooped Up” alongside Roddy, before debuting a new track with Fleet Foxes, titled “Love/Hate Letter to Alcohol.” An entourage of acapella singers joined the Grammy-nominated artist on stage for the latter single, while a live percussion performance supplemented the newly-debuted tune. Both “Cooped Up” and “Love/Hate Letter to Alcohol” will appear on Malone's upcoming album, Twelve Carat Toothache, which is scheduled to arrive on June 3. source: https://hypebeast.com/2022/5/post-malone-cooped-up-music-video-roddy-ricch What's going on Internet, Analytic here aka Dreamz and I would like to welcome you to mine, which I call the Notorious Mass Effect Podcast! At 12 minutes past seven this morning I just wanted to put my head in my hands. Because what I was listening to was so depressing. You may have heard it too. It was the conversation Mike Hosking was having with a bar owner in Rotorua, who was talking about homeless people living in motels. Megan Woods was in Rotorua yesterday to do some cheerleading about a new “hub” the Government is setting up to help homeless people there. Rhetorical question: When did we become a nation of “hubs”. These “one-stop shop” things that are full of good intentions but leave you walking out the door with not much more than you walked in with. Maybe a few pamphlets. Someone needs a roof over their head at night, so what does the Government do? It builds a “hub”. Politicians love setting up “hubs”. They do it all the time, all over the show. Because it means they can say they're doing something about a problem when they're actually not doing a damn thing. “We're here to help”. Come and see us at our one-stop shop. Yeah yeah…do me a favour. Have you ever seen those people doing it tough carrying a sign saying “I need a hub”. Of course not, their signs say things like “looking for work”, “need money for food” that sort of thing. And on the same day Megan Woods was setting up the hub in Rotorua, we heard that New Zealand is currently spending a million dollars a day on motels for emergency housing. That's $100 a day for the 10,000 people in this country who currently live in motels paid for by the Government for emergency housing. And so, Mike was talking to this guy about what's going on in Rotorua. Here's what he said about the scene at the motels where people are living paid for by the Government. He said: “You see kids running around the streets late at night unattended.” And he wasn't talking about teenagers - he said these kids are 4, 5, 6, 7. He also said: “It's disgusting and way beyond our imagination. And if this terrible underbelly isn't ripped open and exposed, we're never going to solve the problem.” And I just pictured the scene he was talking about. I thought about 4, 5, 6, 7-year olds running around the streets at night. Cooped up living in a motel. The ones who're at school trying to do their homework amongst all that. I pictured what these kids are being exposed to - with the types of people that will be living in other units next door, upstairs, and downstairs. As I said, it was depressing. Apparently, the Prime Minister thinks having people living in motels is better than having them living in cars. Again - do me a favour. Of course, living in a motel is better than living in a car. But that's like telling someone who's been diagnosed with cancer and told they have a year to live, that it's better than being told they have six months left to live. It's meaningless. What wouldn't be meaningless - is the Government coming out and saying 'this is an appalling situation we've got ourselves into and we can't keep spending a million dollars a day putting homeless people in motels and expecting the problem to fix itself'. Because it's not going to fix itself. It's just another example of a government playing whack-a-mole - that game where things pop up and you have to bang them down as fast as you can. Cost of living crisis - bang. Homelessness - bang. Covid-19 - bang. Mental health crisis - bang. Whack-a-mole. Left, right and centre. Whack-a-mole. Labour, National, ACT. And I'm exhausted by it. Because it feels to me like we are living in a permanent state of crisis and the only thing any of our political parties seem capable of is having the hammer on hand and whacking things down when they pop up. Responding, not leading. And this appalling situation where we have 10,000 New Zealanders living in motels paid for by the Government, is just the start. If the Government - and the Opposition - are allowed to let this continue without getting to the nub of the problem and fixing it, then it is going to become i...

Did you know that on average 3-7 year old siblings argue 3 1/2 times an hour, spending about 10 minutes every hour arguing? Given that we've all been cooped up together for a while now it may feel even more than that! With different ages and different temperaments all vying for parental attention, not to mention time on scarce devices it might be getting a little tense at home. It may feel like a pressure cooker in your house as the kids start fighting over who's going to be in charge of the remote control , who gets the laptop first and whose turn it is to take out the rubbish -no surprise if your buttons are getting pushed! We are all getting triggered by less these days and feeling pretty grumpy sometimes as so much feels beyond our control. And that's just the adults. Kids are still learning how to get their needs met without attacking each other. It can be really upsetting if the kids are constantly arguing, bickering, calling each other names and fighting over possessions and even more so now when you are juggling working from home and sharing confined space 24/7. But the good news is that there are some things you can do to promote sibling friendliness and effective ways of teaching kids when things go wrong that don't involve taking sides and punishing. Listen to this episode if you want to learn: Why siblings fight and how stress can impact on sibling relationships How holding an Extraordinary Family Meeting can help family members to voice their feelings and identify trigger points for each of them (click here for a free download of an invitation to an EFM) How building quiet time into schedules and having quiet zones can help siblings have some space away from each other Why it is important to keep contact with friends and wider family using technology and how to make such interactions work for younger children What role rules may have in passing on your values about family interactions and avoiding conflicts over possessions and shared resources How adult modelling around respectful communication and dealing with conflict is so crucial. No pressure then! How acknowledging a child's feelings can help avoid battles with siblings in the first place and if they do come into conflict help the children to resolve things themselves How appreciating each child uniquely is so important for building self-esteem (and when children feel good about themselves fighting is less likely) and making them aware of how much you value them (so they don't think you love their sibling more than them). Some examples of descriptive praise: Thank you so much Hannah for taking Charlotte out in the garden to let me get on with my work. That was so helpful. I see you've put the jigsaw puzzle away really carefully Tom. There's nothing worse than spending hours on a puzzle and then finding there's one piece missing. You were really careful to put each little piece back in the box. I know Harvey's not really big enough to join in your dinosaur game Alex but it was kind of you to let him hold the tyrannosaurus for a bit. He loved it when you roared at him. About the importance of Special Time with each child alone. Use this time to connect with them and give them undivided attention How making time with all the children together doing an activity they all enjoy can be used to help them see the fun in having siblings and to teach them important social skills, such as how to work through differences. What to do if kids do fight. Top tip: don't punish them. In this time of difficulty we feel we need to celebrate the surprising uplifting moments (SUMs) we come across so we highlight some positive things that have happened lately. We recommend you do this with your children. Maybe help them to see some SUMs about their siblings! It's 50 years ago this week that Neil Armstrong first stepped out of Apollo 11 and onto the moon's surface, followed by Buzz Aldrin (and don't you feel sorry for Michael Collins, who had to stay in the capsule for the duration). Cooped up, uncomfortable - and of course we're still travelling in space, to the International Space Station and back. So who looks after the comfort of the modern astronauts, how do they get the data and how do they process it? Near Futurist Guy Clapperton had a chat with David Meza, knowledge architect at NASA, about how the process of gradual learning and improvement works. Like the show? Why not leave a review wherever you pick it up from, or have a look at the website at nearfuturist.co.uk to subscribe or pick up more episodes? The Near Futurist was recently listed in the Top 10 Futurist Podcasts - my thanks to Anuj and the team for its inclusion.
