Humilitas – humility, poor in spirit, meek, modesty, diffidence, absence of pride and vanity… Jeremiah 9:23-24 says much with very little words. In this way, Jesus calls us to follow him. The one who has ears, let them hear.

Friends of the Rosary: “With a smile, John Paul I managed to communicate the goodness of the Lord,” said Pope Francis during the homily for the beatification of the often called “Smiling Pope.” On Sunday, September 3, in St. Peter's Square, Pope Francis beatified John Paul I, born Albino Luciani, who reigned as pope for only 33 days. John Paul I gained a reputation for his humility and his dedication to teaching the faith in an understandable manner. “How beautiful is a Church with a happy, serene, and smiling face, that never closes doors, never hardens hearts, never complains or harbors resentment, does not grow angry or impatient, does not look dour or suffer nostalgia for the past. Let us pray to him, our father and our brother, and ask him to obtain for us ‘the smile of the soul,” said Pope Francis. As a cardinal, Luciani published a collection of “open letters” to historic figures, saints, famous writers, and fictional characters. The book, Illustrissimi, included letters to Jesus, King David, Mark Twain, Charles Dickens, and Christopher Marlowe, as well as Pinocchio and Figaro, the barber of Seville. He made history in 1978 when he became the first pope to take a double name, after his two immediate predecessors, Popes John XXIII and Paul VI. His episcopal motto was simply: “Humilitas.” Ave Maria! Jesus, I Trust In You! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/malhete-podcast/message

Rev. Allen | Retelling the story of Jesus washing His disciples' feet. What is and isn't humility. Jesus' main teaching - even more than love - was humility. The distinguishing characteristic of his life - even more than love - was humility. We don't talk about humility a lot, but how do you move toward humility? It's not anything you can do, but more of Jesus in you. It's not even a gift He gives, but His presence in your life. John 13:1-20

Humility. It comes from the ancient biblical languages - actually it comes from Greek and Hebrew and Latin. And in all languages, the word humility simply means low. It literally means low. That's all it means. But notice there's a difference between how that low becomes real in terms of how it's lived out. If I'm put low, I'm put in my place, put where I belong. That's not humility, that's humiliation right? If somebody kind of puts me down and puts me in my place I've been put low, I don't feel good, doesn't act good, it's not good, right? But on the other hand, if I bring myself low voluntarily, if I consider myself to become low, that's humility. And there's a huge difference. Now, one could argue that Christ was humiliated on the cross and we could argue that pretty well and make a good case for that. He was humiliated on the cross, but I wanna suggest that he chose to go to the cross. There was more than one occasion when Jesus clearly stated, either I could have rain down fire on you and made this all happen now, or I could have done this, you could have arrested me months ago but you didn't. It's because of my father's will, that this happens and I'm doing this of my own accord. He chose to be made low. And there's a big difference. And so humility for us is choosing this fascinating concept of making ourselves low, not pushing our way to the front, not climbing our way to the top, not putting ourselves in front of others are thinking that we're better than any others. That's what Paul was teaching the church of Philippi. He's just acknowledging that this is the way we get there. So a few years ago, I read a book called “Humilitas,” that's the Latin word for humility. It was written by guy name John Dickson and it's a fascinating book. Dickson says, Humility is the noble choice to redirect our power in the service of others. Wow, we think of those words. Noble. Power. Redirect. choice. I would have never put those words together to describe or to define humility, but once you read the book and once you better understand the biblical text, you recognize how powerful that definition is and why it makes all the sense in the world to be made low in the name of Christ. Dickson says, there are three keys to this definition that kind of make it work. He said The first is dignity. We have to start with dignity, that is to say we must understand that we are made in the image of God, that we are children of God that we have high worth, and high value that we are Dignitaries if you will, that we have dignity 'cause if you don't have dignity, you can't have humility. Hello, 'cause if you don't have dignity, you are humiliated. If you don't have the capacity to choose You are humiliated, you don't have humility, you say. So he said You got to start with dignity, this is the noble cause this is the noble choice. Then he says, There's got to be a willing spirit. That is to say, I have to make this choice. It's a noble choice, it's not just any choice, it's a good and right and fit choice and I have to be willing to make it because, again, otherwise I'm humiliated, I don't have humility. It's a choice. And then, ultimately, he says it's all about the social interactions. It's not really humility unless it's somehow interfaces with other people. And so that's where the redirection of power comes in. I redirect whatever power.
