O Lord, You are my God; I will exalt You and praise Your name, for in perfect faithfulness You have done wonderful things, things planned long ago._ With these words, Isaiah falls in worship before the Lord. You have been a refuge for the poor , a refuge for the needy in their distress, a shelter from the storm and a shade from the heat. How beautiful the Lord is, and how kind! In His gentleness, He stoops down to lift us up and draw us into His own family. This exultant reflection, which is adapted from Isaiah 25, Luke 1:51 and Psalm 18:35, is set to the glorious music of Giovanni Gabrieli's Canzon septimi et octavi toni a 12. Beloved, let us rejoice and be glad in His salvation! The words are read by Elizabeth Hume and Robert Weston, and the music is wonderfully performed for us by Nicola Gerard, Anthony Thompson, Mike Halliday, Peter Richards, Francis Cummings, Shirley Richards, Philippa Barton, Christiane Mueller, Jo Garcia and Corinne Frost.

We mark the death on August 12, 1612 – 412 years ago today – of the composer Giovanni Gabrieli.  Born in Venice circa 1555, he grew up and spent his professional life in that glorious city, and died there as a result of complications from a kidney stone. Gabrieli's magnificent, soul-stirring music went a long way towards helping to define the expressive exuberance of what we now identify as Baroque era music.  The impact and influence of his music was ginormous, an impact and influence that culminated a century later in the German High Baroque music of Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)! To a degree beyond any other composer before or after him, Gabrieli's music has come to be identified with his hometown of Venice, in particular the acoustically unique Venetian performance venues for which so much of his music was composed.    It is necessary, then, for us to spend some time in Venice, if only to get some inkling of what makes this singularly remarkable city so spiritually, artistically, and architecturally unique; and why Gabrieli's music is uniquely Venetian.… Continue Reading, only on Patreon! Donald Macleod explores the lives and music of uncle and nephew Andrea and Giovanni GabrieliAndrea and Giovanni Gabrieli share a name that dominated Venetian music during the late 16th and early 17th century. Both uncle and nephew were organists and composers, and their music was linked inextricably with the exceptional city in which they lived and worked. From the organ loft of St Mark's Basilica to the resplendent palazzos of merchants and noblemen, they provided the soundtrack to Venice's golden age, with its numerous feast days and celebrations. But together, they would also pioneer an ambitious way of writing choral music - playing with texture and architecture– that would eventually echo beyond the Venetian waterways and profoundly affect the music of the future.Music Featured:Andrea Gabrieli: Benedictus dominus Deus sabbaoth Andrea Gabrieli: Fantasia allegra del duodecima toni Andrea Gabrieli: Hor chel nel suo ben seno; Vaghi augelletti; Angel del terzo ciel; O suave a mio cor Andrea Gabrieli: Aria della battaglia Andrea Gabrieli: Laudate dominum omnes gentes a 5; Laudate Dominum in sanctis eius a 10; Giovanni Gabrieli: O magnum mysterium Andrea Gabrieli: Ricercar del settimo tuono Giovanni Gabrieli: Deus qui beatum Marcum Andrea Gabrieli: Sancta et immaculata; Laetare Jerusalem Andrea Gabrieli: Maria Magdalenae et altera Maria; Maria stabat ad monumentum Andrea Gabrieli: Kyrie a 5; Christe a 8; Kyrie a 12; Gloria a 16 Giovanni Gabrieli: Exaudi me domine a 16 Giovanni Gabrieli: Hic est filius Dei (arr. No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what You have prepared for those who love You, Lord, but You have revealed it to us by his Spirit. The Music: Gabrielli's Canzone primi toni The end of the 16th century found Giovanni Gabrieli combining the roles of organist and principal composer at St Mark's Cathedral, where he was able to take full advantage of the superb acoustics in that majestic building. One commentator described his dialogues between different instruments as being the 16th-century equivalent to ‘surround sound.' This simple canzona perfectly offsets the theme of this short piece. Musicians: Julia Herzog, Jo Foote (recorders), Lizzie Attwood, Elizabeth Long (flutes), Francis Cummings, Claire Lewis Lim, Chian Lewis Lim and Suzanne Herzog, Jo Garcia, Matthew Deakin (strings) No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what You have prepared for those who love You, Lord, but You have revealed it to us by his Spirit. Lord, I'm eager to do Your will. Lead me to such people, places and sources of information that will increase my stock of wisdom and my store of learning. Help me to know what to say when people come to me in need. Grant me knowledge without pride and insight without suspicion. Keep me from spending too much time with people I can never really help, or be helped by. Help me to realise that when You say “No” or “Wait” You mean it, and that You have good reason for saying it. Help us to listen to You, Lord. May we hear You through the pages of Your Word, now wild and disturbing, now calm and reassuring, Let Your word enter the secret places of the heart, dispersing fear and condemnation, bringing light and love. Help us to perceive the links and connections amongst the turbulent affairs of mankind: between cause and effect, sin and consequence, mercy and the avoidance of disaster. For You are the stillness that comes after the turmoil; the peace at the end of the day, and the One who renews our hope.

Synopsis If you've ever witnessed a spectacular display of the Northern Lights, you'll know the feeling: jaw-dropping wonder at the powerful forces unleashed in the vast spaces of the night sky. The American composer Henry Brant experienced something like that in St. Paul, Minnesota, in 1982 during a visit, and later translated the experience into his “Northern Lights over the Twin Cities,” a work commissioned by Macalester College in St. Paul to celebrate its 100th anniversary in 1985. Like most of Brant's works, this piece employs several distinct groups of performers separated by space, a technique called “spatial” composition. For his Macalester Centenary commission, Brant utilized all the musical ensembles the College had to offer, including its chorus and orchestra, its wind, marching, and jazz bands, and even its bagpipe ensemble, all positioned at various points around the College's cavernous Field House. Brant said his own “spatial” works were inspired by the antiphonal works of the Renaissance composer Giovanni Gabrieli, the multiple brass ensembles in the “Requiem Mass” by the French Romantic composer Hector Berlioz, but above all by “The Unanswered Question,” by the modern American composer Charles Ives. Brant was born on today's date in 1913. He was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 2002, and died at the age of 94, in 2008. Hoy viajaremos a Venecia. Escuchar audio

Your Classical Coffee Break returns to the topic of what artists must do to support themselves. We listen to Giovanni Gabrieli's Canon in 12 in Echo and discuss his success in working within the Church structure. Then we turn to JS Bach and discuss how he made a living through playing the organ and composing. We listen to a number of Bach's pieces (Cantata #150, Concerto for 2 Violins, and St. Mathew Passion) and explore the various patronage positions he took to keep afloat. Was Bach such a groundbreaking composer that potential patrons just didn't get it? Art isn't easy. contact the show at yccb@mauriceriverpress.com

Saint Mark’s Basilica in Venice played an important role in music of the late Renaissance. Here Alessandro and Giovanni Gabrieli took advantage of the architecture by placing separate choirs of instrumentalists across from each other and thus pioneered a new antiphonal sound. Baroque, 1553-1612: The Latin word Cantata means “to sing”, the word Sonata means “to play.” That last title is vague enough to cover a multitude of instrumental genres. Vocal music comes with a built-in structure for the composer to follow.

Oct. 30, 2013. A tribute to Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge's commitment to fostering performance of Renaissance music in the United States, this evening's triple bill sampled some of the most popular trends and performance styles from the period. The party begins as combined brass choirs of the U.S. Navy Band exult antiphonal music by Italian composers Giovanni Gabrieli and Carlo Gesualdo. On their shawms, sackbuts, dulcians, bagpipes and drums, Piffaro, performing music by Dufay, Ockeghem and Clemens non Papa, gives a taste of the 16th-century equivalent of a modern-day rock band. Boston-based vocal ensemble Blue Heron performs choral gems by Dufay, Ockeghem and Sweelinck. The forces combine for a jubilant finale to the Library's version of a Renaissance fair. Lucie Skeaping presents a programme featuring music by one of the most engaging and important Venetian composers, Giovanni Gabrieli, who died in August 400 years ago in 1612. Gabrieli spent his life working in Venice and held the esteemed position of organist at both St. Marks and San Rocco, so some of the musicians and singers must have worked in both establishments too. It is unclear exactly what compositions Gabrieli wrote specifically for the Scuole di San Rocco, but there are some interesting clues left to us by the English traveller Thomas Coryat (featured in yesterday's Early Music Show). Lucie Skeaping introduces a selection of Giovanni Gabrieli's music including the 10-part 'Jubilate Deo' from his Symphoniae Sacrae, 'In Ecclesiis' in 14 parts, and some instrumental works including canzonas and the Sonata con tre violini.
