The last few week of practices focusing on the Elements and the Doshas has brought us to take a closer look at our vital energy called Prana. Like a candle in a pot, we can draw on the Gheranda Samhita for a deeper understanding of how we practice. Using the object as a representation of our embodiment, the vessel is our body that holds the flame, wax and light.Prana – FlameTejas – Light emanating Ojas – resource that fuels the flamePrana is linked to Vata Dosha as it is the life force that stimulates and moves the other two Doshas. Ojas is linked to Kapha Dosha as it fuels the life force with its nutrient rich wax through our diet, rest and care. Tejas is linked to Pitta Dosha which shows our radiance, our energetic expression, our charisma. In the Gheranda Samhita it states the 5 Stages of Prana.ActivationChurnConsolidateIgniteDirectInspired by a Buddhist teaching on the embodiment of our life force, they see issues with the human condition as four vessels that we are consistently working on like potters; Closed Vessel, Dirty Vessel, Tilted Vessel, Leaky Vessel. We become the Yogi potter as we practice to mend, re-shape, clean out and repair as we put ourselves in the kiln of our Yoga practice. The desired heat in practice is Tapas, the heat for positive change. As we understand ourselves more, Svadhyaya, which vessel we identify with and bespoke our practice to promote healing, to inspire ourselves and transform. So our practice is one to first activate, then churn the Prana around unblocking and dissolving obstructions. With a stronger body and control of the Bandhas, we can consolidate the Prana, then ignite the Prana to burn brighter and direct it to either higher states of consciousness or our duties and responsibilities in our day as a result of practice.Closed/Upside Down VesselUnable to hold content or receive.Closed mind and heart. Can't communicate. Not open to hearing or looking at source of problem.Ignorant of themselves and how they affect others.Dirty VesselDisturbed by physical, emotional and energetic toxicity.Symbolic of prior conditioning of past experiences – Samskaras – which interferes with one's ability to see, think and act clearly.Whatever is put into vessel it gets contaminated. Tilted VesselCan't fill to capacity. Distorted or tilted view of themselves and others.Blame themselves or others for current situation.Decreased ability to take in the teaching that might help them. Leaky VesselLet's valuable content escape. They can hear the teachings, understand their importance, but get distracted not being able to hold attention to move in a positive way.Choices dissipates the energy and is wasted on unhelpful thoughts, speech, behaviour and actions.TV, Social Media, News, Emails, etc contribute to this leakage. To read more and to practice with Zephyr Wildman, click here. This Kapha balancing practice will be shaped around the pose Natarajasana; Lord of the Dance pose. We will be doing this pose in different gravitational planes to connect to the playful dance in the practice and to stimulate Kapha, bringing it to focus on the joy this practice can bring.Ayurveda is based on understanding 3 thingsYour Prakruti which is the nature of an individuals personal constitution Make-UpYour Vikruti which is the nature of your imbalanceYour bespoked Medicine in the form of Yoga, Pranayama, Mediations, foods, herbs, vitimans and other life style choices to bring you into harmony, optimising your health and well-beingThis session we will focus on Kapha Dosha which is a combination of matter and form dominated by the element of water and earth. Kapha provides stability and sustains the body tissues and nurtures the resource of fuel for our Prana, life energy, called Ojas.Reflecting on the previous sessions, Vata – Nervous System, and Pitta– Digestive abilities, Kapha is the cohesion that binds and holds things together in the body, the mucus and oil that lubricates joints and tissues. It has the greatest quality of structural integrity in the physical body and serves to protect us. The typical body type of a Kapha is the heaviest of the Dosha types, robust, well-proportioned, strongest and sturdy in build, they are more dense, carry more muscle mass, body fat and are bigger in bones. They usually find it easier to gain weight than lose it. Kapha Dosha types loves rest, sleep and lounging about. Kapha natured people are said to inherently move slowly, tend to be lethargic, which influences their pulse to be slower than the other doshas. Do to this, it is said that they tend to have the longest lifespan because of their slow metabolism and because of their restful state they have a stronger immune system and endurance in the body.Kapha physical traits usually include bigger facial features, wide eyes, big hands, smooth, firm, radiant and oily skin. They tend to have a deeper calming soothing voice, thick nails and hair, and long eye lashes. The character type of Kapha is one of being devotional, trustworthy, supportive, loving, caring, nurturing, very compassionate, empathetic and patient. They are self-reflective, emotionally calm, grounded and thoughtful. This is in us all and serves to keep us in harmony internally with ourselves and unite us with others. They are very forgiving. When they are with others they are fully present, they prefer creating depth in relationships which drive them to feel belonging.Kapha natured people have the endurance to retain what is received through deliberate effort, but are slow learners. They view work as being of service and find great meaning in their life fulfilling that purpose. They are consistent in loyal and reliable in action, once committed they do it faithfully overtime. They view a life that is worth living is one that is filled with love and enjoy the little things of life with all senses. They are easily pleased by the little joys of life and love things that are tried and tested. They don't like change. To read more and to practice with Zephyr Wildman, click here. Doshas - Overview of all Doshas

Over the next few sessions we will be exploring how to create balance within ourselves by studying how we can harmonise our Doshas. This is pointing us to the sister science of Yoga called Ayurveda.Ayur- Life, Longevity Veda- Knowledge, Wisdom and Spiritual Science The link between Yoga & Ayurveda is Prana. The components of this vital energy are Prana – vital force,Ojas – vital essence of nourishment,Tejas – vital light.David Frawley states in his book Yoga & Ayurveda “Yoga is the intelligence of Prana, seeking greater evolutionary transformation. Ayurveda is the healing power of Prana, seeking to consolidate the life systems it has already developed.”Your consciousness has a purpose to this embodiment. It is said to be Dharma – your purpose, your path, your mission that you are meant to carry out to serve yourself and others. As a Yogi, you are trying to find ways to fulfil that. Sva Dharma – is living in harmony with your own dharmic constitutional type and the personalised practices that keep you on your dharmic path to fulfilment. So being Adharmic – is living that brings pain, disease, discomfort and disharmony. Yoga shows us how to realise the “Self”. Through practice you understand the nature of mind and cultivate Self-Knowledge to lead you to liberation (This explained in the Series 7 Stages of Yoga). Ayurveda shows us how to live in such a way that our physical and mental actions don't deviate from what is realised as our true nature or Self. What is dharmic for one might not be for another. So it is important that we bespoke our diet, herbs, asana, PY, meditation and other practices to support a harmonious life. The combination of Yoga and Ayurveda directs one's practice, awareness and life to the realisation of what lies beyond this mundane experience as well as how to live in this world with skill. Yoga is the best therapeutic tool in Ayurveda for keeping the Doshas balanced. Asana, Pranayama and Mediation with Dharana (focused concentration) treats various ailments, structural problems, mental, emotional and energy conditions and disorders.Doshas are physical constitutions and functions that tell us how the organs and body work from a Yogic perspective of Prana. Bespoking practices according to individual types, or, 3 Doshas – Vata, Pitta and Kapha Dosha. We are all three, just one is usually dominate and one usually goes out of balance easily. In this session we will do an overview of all three Doshas. Each Karma will be focusing on the positive qualities of each Dosha and how we can bespoke our practice to become familiar with them in ourselves. To read more and to practice with Zephyr Wildman, click here. How many of us are living in an energy deficit, putting out way more energy than we are receiving or generating for ourselves?  I think this is especially true for parents.  The basic foundation for vibrancy is nourishment but I think the true long game is resilience.  In order to become more resilient you first need to understand the relationship between nourishment and resilience.  In the first episode of Vibrancy is a Long Game, I talk about the Ayurvedic concept of Ojas which is the vital essence of Kapha Dosha and is a part of immunity and true deep nourishment on all levels.  Like many Ayurvedic concepts, Ojas is a part of a trinity.  The other two counterparts are Prana (the vital essence of Vata Dosha) and Tejas (the vital essence of Pitta Dosha) and I think for true vibrancy, we need to look at all three of these vital essences. In this episode:Why it is important to be resilientThe relationship between nourishment and resiliency, why nourishment needs to come firstWhat Tejas and Prana are and how they relate with OjasWhy all three of these are important for long term vibrancyWays to cultivate Prana and TejasRelated Episodes:Episode 2:  The Lens of AyurvedaEpisode 3:  What the Vata?!Episode 8:  Oh Pitta, You're Hot!Episode 10:  Kapha, the Sweet OneEpisode 15:  Vibrancy is a Long GameReferences:Lad, V., M.A.Sc (1990). Lässt dich das, was du gerade tust lebendig fühlen? (Arbeit etc.) 2. Wenn nein, warum nicht? 3. Was kannst du tun, damit du dich lebendig fühlst? …weil du Liebe bist. In this episode, Dr. David Hanscom continues his discussion with internationally renowned Ayurvedic clinician, Zeeba Khan. She describes how doshas (mind body spirit compositions) can indicate the types of illnesses or disorders you might be susceptible to.  She identifies the 3 doshas – Vata Dosha, Pitta Dosha and Kapha Dosha – and gives examples of what they might signify for health. The first step in working with a client is to diagnose their doshas. From  there she will work to bring the most out of balance dosha into balance. To do this, she questions her clients about diet, sleep, stress, what brings them joy and how often they engage in those things. She also asks them why they want to get better. She has discovered there is always an element of forgiveness and compassion in the healing process. Zeeba is an internationally renowned Ayurvedic clinician, meditation teacher, energy healer and motivational speaker who uses holistic treatment to restore her patients' mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual health and to prevent disease and disorders. In particular, she focuses on healing trauma, which often leads to anxiety, depression, feelings of loss, and low self-esteem. She has presented month-long workshops to corporate clients, including some well-known global leaders and has also led meditation and yoga workshops at schools internationally to incorporate wellness education into their curriculum. KAPHA DOSHA If you don't have any knowledge already of the ayurvedic doshas, you may benefit from listening to our episode #39 Realign your life with the ayurvedic doshas before listening to this episode! to recap: in Ayurveda medicine, we are each made up of 3 main doshas, or Types that we tend to hold more or less of in our bodies, minds, and spirits. It is said that when these 3 dosha constitutions are in balance with each other, WE are in balance – thus our bodies are healthy and vibrant, our minds are clear and calm, and we are much more in flow. In this episode, we'll dive into the third type, Kapha dosha. we'll be covering the energetics behind this dosha, some mindset tweaks, and how you can bring balance to certain areas of your life. You'll walk away from this episode knowing if you need less or more of Kapha dosha in your life to find your middle ground. The Kapha dosha is associated with the elements of Earth and Water. Think calm, slow, heavy, cool, soft, and steady. This dosha is associated with the respiratory system – the sinuses, throat, and bronchi, as well as fluids, regulation, and nourishment in our bodies – like the acids that aid digestion and the lubrication for our joints, spine, and nerves. Imo its main energy is in the root and heart chakras. If you have a predominance of Kapha dosha in your physical body, you'll find - You have a strong or heavy build with excellent stamina, large eyes, soft and radiant skin, thick hair and normal digestion - gain weight easily - are prone to a slow metabolism, congestion, oversleeping, depression, and lethargy If you have dominant Kapha energy in your mental/emotional body, you find - you make slow decisions, are detail oriented, and consistent - often experience the following: stubbornness/sluggishness/stagnancy/depression/dullness/complacency - prefer routine and doing one thing at a time - you have a subjective feeling of heaviness in the mind and may find yourself deeply stuck in a pattern that isn't serving you (without realizing) this dosha also has a multitude of strengths – when it's in balance in the mind we are thoughtful, forgiving, patient, and even tempered. When it's in balance in the body we feel a strong sense of support, grounded-ness, and endurance. The Kapha mind also tends to be more emotionally stable and even-tempered especially when in balance – this dosha is compassionate, empathetic, laid-back, and has a cool temperament. Stress may send this dosha out of balance which may cause them to be over analytical, judgmental, jealous, or competitive. They resonate with the earthy astrological signs – Virgo, Capricorn, and Taurus, as well as the watery signs Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces. in order to bring balance to any dosha, we use opposites as medicine. Kapha is earth and water – the opposites would be light, warm, dry, and active. Any meditations or movements that warm the body, stimulate circulation, and encourage movement in general to help release “stickiness” from the mind/body are beneficial for Kapha. The key is for this individual to feel light, clear, and to release stagnation and heaviness. By incorporating activity, change, movement, and stimulation - the Kapha can better avoid stagnancy, excess coolness, or heaviness in the mind body spirit. For yoga poses, the best are ones that help awaken the body gradually through the senses by using breath, imagination, and the stimulation of emotions – preferably in the morning to set Kapha up for more energy throughout the day. Example of a good yoga flow for kapha would be sun salutations in between standing poses, like forward bends and twists. Breathing slow and rhythmic to maintain concentration during the poses. As far as meditation goes, anything that focuses on releasing attachment, cleaning mental sluggishness, or focuses on purification are great for kapha dominant persons. As far as foods, tastes that stabilize Kapha are pungent, bitter, and astringent. Examples: pungent – chili peppe

Spring is the time to shake off the lethargy of wintry days and be up and about.  But the changing climate can do weird things to our insides.  One part of our body that is affected most by the changing weather is our digestive system.  And as I keep saying that is the function of the body on which our health depends the most.  So learning how to deal with Spring may sound funny, but is extremely useful if you're looking to pass this season uneventfully.  Here's an episode dedicated especially to tips on managing our minds and bodies in the Spring season! Here's what this episode will tell you:How climatic changes in Vasant Ritu (Spring season) can affect our health. How the climate affects the functioning of our digestive system. Why and what you need to eat to protect yourself from health problems during this time. How small changes in your lifestyle and routine can help to deal with the effect of climate change.Specific yoga asanas for allergies and to calm the disturbed Kapha Dosha in this season. If you're looking for natural ways to wellness and health, this is the way to start.I'll be happy to answer any questions on Ayurveda and how it can help.  Find me on Twitter@Ayurvedaguy, on  Linkedin at www.linkedin.com/in/nirogam or email me at puneet@thatayurvedaguy.com to chat about it.
