Dedicating your life to scientific pursuits can have countless benefits for humanity, but you have to bear in mind the potential drawbacks. You could study something before its dangerous effects are known, like Marie Curie, invent something monumentally destructive, like J. Robert Oppenheimer, or accidentally fall through a time hole to the court of King Arthur like Dr. Vivian Morgan, the protagonist of the film we're here to talk about today.Luckily, Vivian isn't the sort of person to get bogged down in things like 'trying to understand what happened' and 'attempting to get back to her home time', and instead throws herself wholeheartedly into her two passions: speedrunning the industrial revolution and murdering her rivals at court. But can she truly make life better for the serfs of England? Can Arthur be persuaded that the King's Law isn't always right? And why does Merlin keep spinning in a circle, emitting colourful gas? What would you do with the incredible power of time travel? No, look... no, you can't stop historical tragedies from happening because you can only go back in time 48 hours so- no, you can't buy a lottery ticket either because you're a teenager in this scenario, so you- no, you can't see wonderful things all over the world, you have to remain within a 20 minute travel radius of your school. You'd use it to stop nerds embarrassing themselves two days in the past? Yeah, that's probably as good as it's going to get, isn't it.That's the decision the heroes of this week's DCOM, 2008's Minutemen, also come to and before long they're popping out of a time hole to stop a nerd from getting pantsed, and barreling through the space time continuum to prevent a geek from walking around school with toilet paper stuck to his shoe. But when their chronovigilantism offers one of them a chance to undo his greatest mistake, will he take it? Being a princess is hard work. You're the best person in your whole kingdom, and yet you're somehow expected to set an example for the scum who live there, and occasionally military dictators will stride into your throne room and declare a military coup. Luckily for those situations, we have the Princess Protection Program, a secret service just for young, female royalty, who will spirit princesses away from dangerous conflict zones and force them to live in a stinking bait shack in a Louisiana swamp. Hooray! This unlikely situation is where Princess Rosalinda (Demi Lovato) finds herself in 2009's Princess Protection Program, much to the chagrin of one of the bait shack's current occupants, Carter (Selena Gomez). However, as Rosalinda's exile continues, the two find themselves growing closer, and both of them start to realise the true meaning of being a princess: pop rock montages. Will Rosalinda be able to return to the kingdom of Costa Luna? Can Carter win the coveted title of Homecoming Queen? And why doesn't General Kane just strafe everyone involved with his F-16s? What if a snowman came to life? It'd be pretty horrifying I expect, on account of how he'd be like, three fleshy balls, precariously balanced on top of each other. But what if the snowman had abs? Pretty sexy, right? Also he has the mind of a child. Wait, come back. That's the premise for Hot Frosty (2024), Netflix's smash hit holiday movie in which a sexual snowman comes to life to romance a bereaved widow looking to put the spark back into her life. And by romance, we mean fix a bunch of stuff around her house, get turned down for hugs, and almost kiss her twice, because this movie is light on the steamy romance, and heavy on scenes of policemen doing sketch comedy work. But it's probably for the best, because did I mention he has the mind of a child? Good, good. Just checking. Anyway, happy holidays y'all, and if you want bonus episodes of the show, monthly livestream watchalongs, or a shoutout at the end of the show, remember to check out our Patreon at Patreon.com/extrahelpings. Welcome, foolish mortals, to the Mom Can't Cook podcast! Consider this dismaying observation: this episode is about the 2003 Haunted Mansion movie, which offered us this chilling challenge: watching the 2003 Haunted Mansion movie. Eddie Murphy plays Jim Evers, a workaholic real estate agent who drags his family to the titular manse with the hopes of earning a big payday from selling it. But as soon as the Evers arrive they realise that all is not well at Gracey Manor, as the house's 999 happy haunts come out to socialise. Will Eddie Murphy stop effing around long enough to save his family? Are Master Gracey and Eddie Murphy's wife actually really into each other? And how is ramping a horse and carriage out of an attic considered anyone's 'way'? Vega omega, Mom Can't Cook! fans, this week we're heading back to the spay-stay for another instalment in the Zenon series of sci fi films that is confusing major, as well as viral extreme (bad). When we join our hero Zenon, she has a lot going on, with a new cousin, her space driving test, and the Galactic Teen Supreme contest all vying for her attention. But when moon activist Sage Borealis approaches her to tell her that going to the moon is bad, Zenon must decide whether to pursue her dreams of being the galaxy's most extreme teen, or appease the moon goddess Selena to stop her destroying the Earth with weather. Calvin Wheeler, the main character of Life is Ruff, is many things. A big man on campus, a world class skateboarder, master to a snivelling worm-like manservant named Figg and of course, the world's biggest fan of an unpopular superhero named Gotham Man. What he isn't, is a dog owner, something that proves to be a problem when he needs to win a dog show to get enough money to buy the rare comic Gotham Man #1. Enter Tyco, a large, rambunctious shelter dog whose antics prove to be more than the selfish Calvin can handle. Will Calvin be able to overcome his selfishness and lead Tyco to dog show glory? What is going on in Gotham Man anyway? Does that fancy evil boy really die at the end of this movie? High School Musical was a watershed moment for Disney Channel Original Movies, when they crossed over from odd, throwaway curiosities about mermen and telepathic horses, into huge mainstream success, with hit albums, merchandise and two bona fide stars in the form of Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens. With all that being said however, it is still recognisably a DCOM, thanks to such unmissable genre conventions as a vaguely nonsensical plot, a budget of about $40, and of course, a weapons-grade Bad Dad. Can you think of any scenario in which you abscond with the President's daughter and don't end the night being killed by the secret service? Well, Disney can. In My Date With the President's Daughter (1998), regular teen Duncan Fletcher asks a girl at the mall on a date, only to discover later that she's the literal DOTUS. When Hallie decides to escape her handlers for a wild night of mayhem, hijinks ensue. Is this the worst secret service ever? Ice. What is it? Science can only begin to guess. But without it we would not have figure skating or ice hockey, the two sports at the heart of this week's DCOM, Go Figure. We're halfway to Halloween, Mom Can't Cook fans, so what better way to celebrate than with a spooky DCOM! This week it's 2002's The Scream Team, which is, confusingly, about a group of ghosts called The Soul Patrol. It's also about Ian and Claire, two kids whose grandfather passes away, but unfortunately gets his soul crushed in the fist of an evil dead inventor called Zachariah Kull. And also about an insulting Halloween festival that Zachariah Kull is annoyed about? But also mostly about natural gas! And the Soul Patrol are there, occasionally! Good times. Can Johnny save his increasingly large family from the poisonous influence of these bad dudes and their strikingly terrible extreme sport? Jace Newfield is a New Yorker through and through. He loves jazz music, playing baseball in Central Park and, of course, the great taste of an egg cream. He's also a person who is blind, although in a place like the Big Apple, he lives a normal life with his friends. But when his family uproots and moves Jace to Utah, he finds himself struggling with his new surroundings. The school won't get a beeping backboard to allow him to play basketball, his music teacher hates him, and his classmates don't seem to appreciate him walking around loudly talking about how great New York is, and how everyone in Utah is a toothless hillbilly who wouldn't know culture if it spit in their egg cream. Can joining the wrestling team give Jace a new sense of purpose and belonging? Why is this movie about wrestling and not jazz music? What the hell is an egg cream? Continuing the grand DCOM tradition of trying to get you to care about niche sports, this week's episode is about Right on Track (2003), which takes us deep into the highly competitive world of *checks notes* junior drag racing. Here we meet Erica Enders and her sister Courtney, junior dragster prodigies who struggle to be taken seriously because of a) the sexist attitudes of those in charge of this male dominated sport, and b) the fact that the sport itself is driving really fast in a straight line for eight seconds. Will they be able to overcome these obstacles and win the big race? Listen and find out! 17 year old Pete Riley thinks he has it pretty tough. He's the assistant manager of a huge cinema, there's a big Hollywood premiere happening tonight, and he's friends with like, 37 named characters that this film expects us to keep track of. An impossible task for a movie audience, let alone one stressed boy. But buckle up folks, because Pete's evening is about to get a whole lot weirder as a mysterious phantom starts stalking his megaplex, messing with the screenings, terrorising the customers and threatening to ruin the premiere. Will Pete be able to unmask the phantom and save the show? How is the phantom doing any of this? Why is Mickey Rooney in this film? The answers to these questions and more, await! When we last saw Zenon Kar, star of Disney Channel Original Movie Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century, she'd become a hero after saving her space station from a baffling plot that was something to do with insurance fraud, I think. But now Zenon is back for Zenon: The Zequel (2001), and facing a new threat to her home, as well as the possibility of alien life who are really into rockstar Proto Zoa. Will Zenon save her home, again? What do the aliens want with the lead singer of Microbe? And why do they keep saying "blow an O-ring", even though we all know what it means now? Join Andy and Luke to find out! If you've watched Zenon: The Zequel and have your own thoughts, email them to us at momcantcookpod@gmail.com for a chance to have them read out on the show. Peel your ears and get hip to this, daddy-os, Mom Can't Cook! is making the scene with a flick that is as confusingly 1950s as this sentence. That's right, it's Alley Cats Strike, a film about an unpleasant group of 1950s obsessed, bowling-loving outcasts who are suddenly thrust into the limelight when they find themselves as the town's last hope to win a prestigious, apple-themed sporting tournament. Can they act non 1950s long enough to carry the town to glory? Will a normal person be able to join their ranks and not lose his temper and punch all of them? How many failed apple harvests will it take for this town to go full Wicker Man? The answers to these questions and more, await! Buckle up, DCOM fans, because this week we present a crossover event easily as momentous as Avengers Endgame: all three Lawrence brothers in a single movie! That movie is Jumping Ship, a canonical sequel to Horse Sense, which you'll remember was a story about a spoiled rich kid learning about honest down home folks who keep it real by owning horses and operating enormous ranches. What might surprise you is that this film contains almost no horses, and is instead a story about ancient temples and bloodthirsty pirates in Australia. Why? Your guess is as good as ours! What a treat we have in store this week, DCOM fans, because we're talking about Hounded, the Disney Channel Original Movie with the most violent dog attacks per minute of screen time. It's not even close. The movie tells the story of Jay Martin, a bright student who is trying to win a scholarship to a prestigious school. However, through a series of wacky mishaps, Jay accidentally ends up kidnapping his principal's tiny, violent, bloodthirsty dog instead, and now you can forget about all that prestigious school plot because the rest of the film is just him being repeatedly owned by this horrible hound in a series of scenes that are as inventive in their action cinematography as they are genuinely harrowing to watch. Do you like dolphins? Do you like extremely predictable romantic drama? Do you like heavy handed religious metaphors? If any of these things sound like your idea of a good time then you're either Luke Westaway, or someone else who is going to enjoy the film we're talking about this week, A Ring of Endless Light. The movie tells the story of Vicky Austin, an aspiring poet who spends the summer on Seven Bay Island, an island on the Atlantic coast of the US that is just lousy with dolphins, evil fishermen, and hot boys to become entangled in love triangles with. Will Vicky be able to choose between earnest but kind dolphin researcher Adam Eddington and torrid bad boy Zachary Gray? Can she truly communicate with dolphins telepathically? And just why did dolphins make the conscious decision to give up their hands? The answers to some of these questions await! It's not clear at which point Kyle Johnson, protagonist of The Luck of the Irish (2001), is killed and the rest of the film is just the product of his neurons firing one last time, but it must be pretty early on because this is probably the most unhinged DCOM Andy and Luke have tackled so far. The movie tells the age-old story of a basketball-loving boy who discovers he hails from a family of leprechauns and - uh oh - begins transforming into a leprechaun when his lucky coin is stolen. Andy and Luke grapple hopelessly with the most baffling DCOM plot yet, but not as hopelessly as this movie grapples with accents, or weighty themes such as heritage and the immigrant experience. You probably felt pretty smart the day you sent your clone to school in your place, leaving you free to play Dreamcast and eat microwave popcorn at home all day. But oh no! The clone is effortlessly better than you in every way. That's the nightmare scenario facing Will Browning (Andrew Lawrence) in this week's DCOM, The Other Me (2000). Andy and Luke discuss the film, as well as the best ways to remain un-strangled by your clone, and the folly of disguising your groundbreaking scientific endeavours as a brine shrimp export company. Listen for all this, plus: Are yo-yos cool, the NSYNC WhatsApp group and the introduction of our hot new IP, Ramp Warriors. Happy Monday, podcast fans! We're back and trying to answer one of the most contemplated questions of modern times: can a genius ever be cool? Charlie Boyle, the physics prodigy protagonist of 1999 DCOM Genius certainly gives it a good go, by adopting the bad boy persona of Chaz Anthony so that he can be the big man on campus at a local high school, while simultaneously trying to discover the graviton particle at the nearby university. But how long can Charlie keep this ruse afloat? Could he use his groundbreaking discoveries to fix ice hockey games? And shouldn't everyone be wearing a lot more radiation shielding? The answers to these questions and more await! If you've watched Genius and have your own thoughts, email them to us at momcantcookpod@gmail.com for a chance to have them read out on the show. Spooky season is here, podcast fans, and we're celebrating the only way we know how - by watching a DCOM with the word Halloween in the title. This week, Andy and Luke are talking about Halloweentown, a seasonal story about a young girl called Marnie who discovers that her grandmother is a witch who lives in a magical place called Halloweentown, where it's Halloween all year round, and the residents are all monsters of varying levels of attention to detail, depending on how close they are to the camera. But all is not well in Halloweentown, and so Marnie and her siblings set out to save Grandma's home from an evil presence that threatens to take over not just the town, but the entire world. Will Marnie unlock her witchy powers in time to stop the presence? Does it really count as being a monster if you're just wearing a Shrek mask and cargo shorts? How did this movie get three sequels? 60MW Towers always gets positive feedback about the beginning section of the ABC of gaming shows, where the guys chat about their personal lives and are not afraid to open up their feelings to the listeners. With that in mind, here is of another branch in the ABC series: ABC of Fording Ahead (this is the 4th show in this series). In these shows Ben, Chris and Alan (see what they did there, still keeping the host initials despite a slight change in the staff rota for this particular series) chat openly about their lives (both past and present) and how they try and stay positive, despite the inevitable ups and downs of life. Show notes: 1. Don’t feed the trolls; don’t let people live rent-free in your head. We spent a lot of time discussing this. You have the choice to keep reliving conversations or actions of others in your head or you can let it go. When you keep mentally fixated on thoughts that anger or upset you, it’s only hurting YOU! The other person likely has not given it a second thought. They are going about their business, while you spiral into negativity. Let it go! Engaging in conversation, especially on social media, can be fun, but more often than not, it can create irritation. If you find yourself engaged in a conversation going nowhere, abandon it and forget it. Don’t feed the trolls! 2. There’s strong evidence that acts of kindness don’t just make others happy; they make you feel good as well. Even just taking a moment to do someone a small favor or randomly sending a text message can put you in a better frame of mind, breaking you out of negative thinking. If you get into a habit of doing something compassionate for another person every time you’re feeling down, anxious or hopeless, it’ll soon become automatic and your negative periods will last for increasingly shorter times. 3. One of the best ways to train your brain to stay positive is to find something you love to do, such as a sport, hobby or pursuit. Whenever your thoughts are focused on your own personal joy, you’ll strengthen the associated neural pathways in your brain and will find more to be joyful about as a result. 4. “Run a mile a day, read a book a week; Strengthen the mind, strengthen the body.” If you want to be a better positive thinker, take an honest critical look at how you treat your body and identify potential areas for improvement. Diet, exercise and overall fitness plays a huge factor in your overall mental health. It doesn’t have to be anything radical. Start by just moving more, maybe a walk or some basic pushups and get to a point where you are more active today than you have been. Part of your health is also your spiritual health (whether it’s religion, or Gaia, or karma or whatever is in your inner core), you need to have that third leg to keep you upright. 5. Show me your friends and I’ll show you who you are. If you are having a hard time staying positive, see if you have surrounded yourself with a roomful of downers. You tend to act like those you hang around with, so choose your circle carefully. This isn’t to say you abandon those who need you. However, if you are struggling with positivity, it becomes much harder for you to be able to help him or her through their issues. 6. When you lay down at night, take a moment and consciously recall at least three individual things that went well for you that day. These do not need to be big. In fact, it’s more important to remind yourself of the small positives. Maybe you hit all of the traffic lights on the way home. Maybe your dog made you laugh. Perhaps a family member randomly said they loved you. Whatever it is, force yourself to recall those three moments from your day. The more you do this, the more it will become automatic. Soon, you’ll be noticing the really good things happening around you all the time and you won’t ignore them. Once you see you are surrounded by positives, when you are dealing with a negative, it no longer seems overwhelming.
