There is a saying when boating in areas with shifting sand and shoals. “Local knowledge necessary to navigate safely”. The same can be said for life. When we come up against major issues that we have never experienced, it is smart and helpful to have someone who has been there before to guide you through the unknown territory. Iris Waichler, a licensed Social Worker, specializes in doing just that. Iris has over 35 years of experience working with hospital patients, and their families, who are going through catastrophic health issues. Her mission is to educate and empower people who feel overwhelmed by their own health challenges, and to support the caregivers of others.Ms. Waichler found herself in the role of a patient when she battled infertility for many years. The feelings of loss and helplessness she personally experienced were profound. She promised herself if she was successful in having a child, she would do everything she could to help other people fighting infertility.Seeing the struggles of others as well as her own, she knew that people needed to have a voice when they enter these unknown waters. The book is unique in that the first half is a memoir of her dad's life which she wrote with him to chronicle his experience of being cared for coupled with that of her being a personal as well as professional caregiver. Ep 044: In our show, we've covered many topics but we've not had the conversation about Caregiving. According to the National Alliance of Caregiving (NAC) and AARP, 53 million, or 21% of Americans are providing unpaid care to an adult with health or functional needs. 24% of caregivers are caring for more than one person. 26% of Americans are caring for someone with Alzheimer's disease or dementia. Lastly, 26% of family caregivers report THEIR own health as fair to poor! So what do we need to know about caregiving BEFORE we get into the role? How do we balance our own mental, physical, and emotional health and the person we're taking care of? Where do I go if I need help and have questions? How do I make sure I'm ok AFTER the adult I'm caring for is gone? That's the premise of today's show! Enter an expert who has been a well-known patient advocate and licensed clinical social worker for the last 35 years. She began her career working with geriatric patients who experienced catastrophic illnesses and counseled them and their families about adapting to these medical problems. She also covered the emergency room for 13 years seeing patients of all ages with a variety of medical problems. In writing her new book, "Role Reversal: How to Take Care of Yourself and Your Aging Parents," our guest has come full circle. Her experience in caring for her beloved father, who died at age 97, triggered her passion in reaching out to others who suddenly find themselves in a caregiver role and are uncertain about what to do or where to go for help. SUMMARY In her award-winning book, Role Reversal: How to Take Care of Yourself and Your Aging Parents, Iris Waichler blends her personal experience with her professional expertise as a licensed clinical social worker and patient advocate for over 40 years. Her book is designed to help caregivers who are now 53 million strong in America, 90 percent of whom are adult children or spouses. Realizing caregivers lose a loved one twice, the author teaches how to cope with and overcome the overwhelming challenges that arise while caregiving for a loved one—especially an aging parent. Packed with invaluable information, Waichler addresses a myriad of pertinent topics ranging from dealing with grief and estate planning to taking precautions to avoid scams and finding the right level of care for an elderly parent. AVOIDING CAREGIVER BURNOUT: Pay attention to your body (headaches, body aches), emotional symptoms (increased irritability), and mental pressures (guilt). Have a backup/respite plan, and then revisit the plan frequently and adapt it to allow for changes. Incorporate weekly time off to recharge. MORE IDEAS TO HELP CAREGIVERS: Hire a geriatric care manager. Identify people who live nearby who can help. Divide caregiving assignments, maximizing skill sets. Use reminiscence therapy. Reach out to get additional help. QUOTES FROM WAICHLER “It doesn’t matter how old you are when you lose a parent. It can be a surprise even when you expect it. It remains a loss or an absence in your life regardless of the relationship you had. Your life is forever changed.” “This role reversal…can be emotionally difficult and stressful for all concerned. It can test everyone’s patience and commitment.” “The best thing you can do for a person with dementia is recognition of the person they were and are and be compassionate in your communication.” “The people we see in their old age today are an altered reflection of who they were when they were young.” “The intimacy of being with someone who is ill, and taking care of that person, is both a powerful and painful experience.” RECOMMENDATION Find a geriatric care manager and other resources to support caregivers at the Aging Life Care Association. When Iris' friend was dying of a brain tumor, a group of friends became the caregivers. She was impressed by her friend's courage of facing death. Iris helped her friend's brother cope with the transition, to let go, to say goodbye and enabled them to bond. She felt privileged. Iris shares the following nuggets of life wisdom for caregivers: - strive not to judge - be open to listen - be there for them - accept circumstances that we are given - family is a subjective word - recognize that you may be feeling that you are losing the person that you once knew - get support for yourself as a caregiver - identify who will be the advocate Iris Waichler has been a well known patient advocate and licensed clinical social worker for the last 35 years. She began her career working with geriatric patients who experienced catastrophic illness and counseled them and their families about adapting to these medical problems. She continued to work on a rehabilitation unit in a large Chicago teaching hospital with patients who had suffered traumatic brain injuries, strokes, cancer, amputations, burns, and neurological diseases like multiple sclerosis and parkinson’s disease. Ms. Waichler also covered the emergency room for 13 years seeing patients of all ages with a variety of medical problems. In addition she worked with kids who had been victims of child abuse. Her long term hospital work gave her insights into how overwhelming it was for patients and families who suddenly found themselves in a hospital setting feeling helpless and alone. This prompted her to write her first book, Patient Power: How to Have a Say in Your Hospital Stay. She understood that if people knew what questions to ask and where to go for support, it would help empower them and assist them in coping with their medical conditions and the resulting life changes. She used these insights to supervise social work students, and teach medical students, interns, residents, and nurses about patient rights, ethics, and to help them become more empathetic and effective in their day to day patient and family care. Ms. Waichler found herself in the role of a patient when she battled infertility for many years. The feelings of loss and helplessness she personally experienced were profound. She promised herself if she was successful in having a child she would do everything she could to help other people fighting infertility. She authored a second award winning book, Riding the Infertility Roller Coaster: A Guide to Educate and Inspire. This book won 2 best book of the year awards. The response was so great she began doing individual and group counseling with people who had infertility. She volunteered for RESOLVE, a national infertility group, and went on to do a series of radio interviews, magazine articles, workshops, and speeches designed to inform and support men and women with infertility. In writing her new book, Role Reversal: How to Take Care of Yourself and Your Aging, Ms. Waichler has come full circle.
