Awkward Conversations

Today's awkward conversation is a revisit from last season, which is knowing the signs of possible drug use and what to do. Our host, Jodie Sweetin is joined by Timothy P. McMahon who has been employed by the DEA since 1998 and Amy McCarthy, Clinical Social Worker at Boston Children's Hospital. Special Agent McMahon shares common ways that kids hide drugs in plain sight and what signs to look for with changes to personality, involvement, or money use. They also share tips on how to talk to your child about drugs and how to respond with love rather than anger if you discover your child is using drugs. This topic can be scary and overwhelming to parents but they need to remember the sooner you address it, the better.  Key Takeaways: Teenagers often hide drugs in plain sight. Some places could be behind picture frames on the wall, in a book on their bookshelf, or even in a pop can or tennis ball. If you discover that your kids are using drugs, be sure to not respond in anger. Take a step back and collect your thoughts before approaching your child. Rather than lecture them, ask open ended questions and come at if from a place of wanting to understand what's going on. When you find these drugs you need to address the situation as quickly as possible because the situation will only get worse. And with each time that they use or engage in drug use, it can only lead to that much more danger.   BIOS: Jodie Sweetin is an actress, author, and advocate, best known for her role as Stephanie Tanner on the iconic sitcom "Full House" and its sequel "Fuller House". In 2009 she penned her memoir, "unSweetined", which chronicles her journey through addiction and into recovery. With her frank and open approach, Jodie has emerged as a compelling speaker and advocate who now seeks to use her platform and experiences to educate others and reduce the stigma associated with addiction and recovery. @jodiesweetin   Amy McCarthy, LICSW, is a Director of Clinical Social Work at Boston Children's Hospital's Division of Addiction Medicine. She has been working in the Adolescent Substance Use and Addiction Program since 2019 @amymccarthylicsw   Special Agent Timothy P. McMahon has been employed by the Drug Enforcement Administration since October 1998 and has been assigned to DEA's New Jersey Division.  Prior to becoming a Special Agent with the DEA he spent six (6) years as a trooper with the New York State Police from October 1992 thru October 1998.  Special Agent McMahon has been assigned to enforcement and task force groups investigating drug trafficking organizations. He has also served as the Special Agent Recruiter, Demand Reduction Coordinator and Public Information Officer. Special Agent McMahon was recently promoted to Group Supervisor for the Special Support Unit. Supervisory Special Agent McMahon earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from St. Bonaventure University. In this episode, Becca Post joins Megan to discuss her journey to becoming a therapist and coach for wellness seekers. She discusses the challenges of navigating the twists & turns of life, the importance of building a support network, and the value of asking for help. Becca's group therapy practice focuses on providing modern tools and personalized models for therapy and aftercare. Becca shares how she started offering coaching to help clients who were transitioning out of therapy and looking for a place to check in and receive accountability. She also discusses her vision for her business, including expanding beyond Utah and training therapists in coaching. This is a relaxed and FUN conversation! You don't want to miss it. Takeaways: Navigating personal and professional transitions can be challenging, but it's important to embrace imperfection and trust the process. Self-care is crucial for maintaining well-being, and it's essential to prioritize activities that bring joy and help regulate emotions. Asking for help and building a support network is necessary for personal and professional growth. Setting boundaries and delegating tasks are key strategies for avoiding burnout and maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Transitioning from therapy to coaching can provide clients with more tangible guidance and support after therapy. After therapy is not the end of the healing journey, but rather a phase where clients can implement what they have learned and receive more direct support. Coaching can be a space for clients to explore their goals, receive accountability, and leave with skills and homework. Building a business in the therapy and coaching field requires vulnerability, identity shifts, and the ability to adapt to change. Training therapists in coaching and offering a holistic approach to healing can help shift the traditional model of therapy and provide more comprehensive support to clients. More about Becca: Forward movement requires modern ways of thinking.  Which is why Becca combined her clinical training in psychotherapy models with holistic tools and spiritual practices to create my Forward Model of Change. With a commitment to show up in my humanness so you can too, Becca can offer you permission to shift your patterns and propel yourself forward.  Becca is a Clinical Social Worker, Mental Health Therapist and Coach for wholeness seekers, trapped achievers, karmic breakers, family shakers, and emotional feelers, and the founder of Forward Healing, where we offer modern tools + personalized models for Therapy and After-Therapy.  Because we believe in a preventative approach to healing, which means wholeness doesn't come from a diagnosis. Paul Krauss MA LPC and Laurie Belanger LCSWR speak about the foundations of what Trauma-Informed Care really means in the context of our greater society, not just mental health practice or trauma therapy. Laurie and Paul discuss the intersections of Trauma-Informed Care and change in greater society This is a different way of approaching human behavior and it really ought to help us question, reorganize or even dismantle many of our institutions of care (medical, educational...for starters) and build something better. That may sound a bit ambitious, yet it becomes pretty clear once you begin unpacking the core concepts of Polyvagal Theory. Neuroscience and Trauma therapists agree: It's something like a ‘Windows update' for "being a human.” We are living in a very strange time in history. We actually have the knowledge that we need to create more compassionate and science backed care and education of every member of society. Yet we are falling farther and farther behind in many real spaces. Much of it comes down to systems that were not designed with emotional safety in mind as being important for learning or healing  physical health issues. Fear of change keeps broken systems in place. This means that trauma-informed providers and educators are out here in society trying to share and equip a community working from within systems that were not designed to work that way.  Rather than become discouraged, Laurie Belanger LCSWR is talking about it. As citizens, the steps we can all take from within the outdated systems we are working within. We are talking about the possibilities of someday re-inventing the systems that no longer serve us. Laurie Belanger LCSWR is a licensed Clinical Social Worker & Trauma Psychotherapist in New York State. With a bachelors in Psychology from Moravian University and a Masters in Social Work from The University at Buffalo Graduate School of Social work, Laurie continues to pursue a lifetime of advanced learning attending conferences and training herself on the advances continuing to be made in the field of trauma, social work and psychology. Key Takeaways We have a crisis in the US healthcare system. One of the biggest challenges is access to quality consistent care. The care is often subpar, and the shortage of providers negatively impacts the quality of care. People don't want to plan for aging well because they are afraid of getting older. Fears like having reduced mobility, getting an illness, running out of money and dying can feel overwhelming. Everyone wins when you plan. Create a life plan early in you're in your 40s and 50's to share with adult children, family, and friends. We need a collaborative team approach to aging.
