I had so much fun, and learned a ton from this conversation with Greg Peterson of the Great American Seed Up and the Urban Farm Podcast! If you've been listening for a while, you know that podcasters are great conversationalists, and can be very entertaining - Greg is no exception! Greg's podcast has about 900 (nine hundred!) episodes since the end of 2015!Greg has been on a mission since he was 15 years old to figure out how to fix the broken food system, and has been running the Great American Seed Up out of Arizona for several years; kind of like a buffet for seeds - thousands of people attend in person each year, to stock up on seeds. He says seeds are expensive to buy when you buy from a store, mostly because of the pretty packaging, so they simplify it, and you can buy in bulk. *You can also mail order seeds, FYI* In my head, I've been trying to imagine what the event looks like, to have bulk seeds for thousands of shoppers...The first soundbite I posted to promote this episode gave me chills - he said this: "I am the person on the planet responsible for transforming our global food system." WOW! And this is the message he hopes you will take away from this conversation: "The most important thing that we can be doing right now is figuring out where our food comes from and how to grow our own. And that starts with having seeds and knowledge to grow food." He also says that 20% of our gardens should include pollinator-friendly plants - that's a great piece to start with! You can find all things Greg Peterson at https://www.urbanfarm.org/ and https://greatamericanseedup.org/They're also on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/urbanfarmu?igsh=MXZpNzhmbzdrd3Nndg%3D%3DYou can send me messages(this is new!)!Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here YouTube channel link is here You can DM me there or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com Website for Amy's Garden Jam is https://amysgardenjam.com/ (podcast has its own tab on this site!) When Sam Baker approached me about talking about the product he represents, worm casting tea, and also mentioned that WiggleBrew has tested and discovered that earthworms can actually "EAT PLASTIC," it was a no-brainer- I couldn't wait to hear more about that! As a big fan of worm compost (vermicompost), I was very excited to promote the crap (pun intended) out of WiggleBrew, and Sam didn't disappoint. He was talking to me from an Agriculture conference in Chicago, where he presented WiggleBrew, and mentioned he felt over dressed, because he wore a business suit, and the others were dressed more comfortably. But I hope the folks there really heard him like I did- "A team of recent college grads is making a fertilizer from worm poop that row crop farmers are using instead of the toxic stuff. Along the way, they discovered that earthworm microbes can also be used to break down plastic!"This feels like game changing information to me - I mean, the real game changer would be less plastic being produced, of course, but to have earthworms eat it, and then produce fertilizer?? WHOA--From WriggleBrew's website: "it's not all poop jokes and worms over here- there's a more serious reason we're doing this all- more serious than saving habitats. Malnutrition that stems from mineral fertilizer use on crops makes up about 4% of child deaths around the world right now. Mineral fertilizers, like a certain TikTok famous houseplant fertilizer, does not let plants uptake (eat) the micronutrients that we humans need from our food: like zinc, iron, and magnesium. Makes the plants more susceptible to disease too."Check out WriggleBrew's website: https://www.wrigglebrew.com/Find them on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wrigglebrew/and on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/PRAGWriggleBrewYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPzJEBVwHWJzbmc15QN5TcQand on TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@wrigglebrew_officialYou can send me messages(this is new!)!Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here YouTube channel link is here You can DM me there or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com Website for Amy's Garden Jam is https://amysgardenjam.com/ (podcast has its own tab on this site!) It's been a while since I've done a solo episode, and there's a lot to catch up on! I changed my last name, for one - literally the day I recorded this with Jen.I've got a weekly newsletter - it's not long, and it's not a sales pitch - literally just keeping in touch. Social media algorithms are wonky, and are not our own, and I would definitely miss people if we lost them! I deleted my Facebook account because I was seeing less of what I wanted it for daily.I want to buy a farm; I attached a Substack that woke the dream I've had for over 20 years toward the bottom here, but this is something I've wanted to do since I was in my 20s, and now I feel called to reimagine and make it happen. I'm looking for suggestions for funding, since properties are ridiculously expensive now, and looking for people to farm WITH, and for properties to consider - really wanting New England, where I belong... I brought my friend Jen Ross along with me because she has an excellent podcast called The Agritourist, and I've learned a ton from her and her guests, and have gained so much inspiration - I HIGHLY recommend it (link below for Spotify)! She used to have a farm, and is planning to do so again - she's also a martketig WIZ! She and I have been sort of daydreaming ideas, and things are sort of starting to fall into place, so I thought it was fitting to do this with her.Jen's podcast The Agritourist is available here: https://open.spotify.com/show/7fPesgSO98MPi2x275g0Wj?si=a391aa71a42b4e1eYou can follow Jen on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/heartbeetfarms/My Newsletter (sign up for updates, and keep in touch!): https://amy-fagan.kit.com/499688fe6aThe Substack that woke up my farming dream by Alexandra Fasulo is here: https://houseofgreen.substack.com/p/one-of-the-biggest-wealth-transfers?triedRedirect=trueYou can send me messages(this is new!)!Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here YouTube channel link is here You can DM me there or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com Website for Amy's Garden Jam is https://amysgardenjam.com/ (podcast has its own tab on this site!) I had a whole different idea of where this conversation would go with Geeta Sidhu-Robb, and I am thrilled to have been wrong about that! I was so happily surprised at the direction, talking about taking your power back, and how menopause is a GIFT to women, because for possibly the first time in our lives, we are forced to put our own needs first - and that was definitely not a thought I had about menopause...Not too long ago Geeta was a newly divorced mom of 3, homeless without a solid plan. Today she is the Founder of WCorp, helping businesses worldwide to certify as supportive to women in many aspects, and has now spoken at the United Nations TWICE and won an award as a thought leader and empowerment coach!Geeta also hosts a podcast called Activate Yourself, and it's nice to have her voice more available to keep in the empowered frame of mind. After speaking with Dr Marlene Siegel, more than ever, I want to clone her and help every caring pet parent get the best possible health care for their fur and feathered babies. If you're a pet parent like me, you've probably wondered from time to time if you're giving the best care to your pet. Dr Siegel will set things straight, from her 40 years of experience studying and treating different animals, and heartbreaking and heart warming stories. Dr Siegel always knew she would work with animals, but didn't expect what happened when her daughter was young on her horse to change her veterinary practice forever. Her business (she sells food and supplements because it may be hard for some of us depending on where we live) is called EvoLove Adventures, and you can find all her offerings and education on her website below.Dr Siegel grows her own food forest to offer the healthiest, cleanest, most nutritionally dense foods to her own family - animals included, and explains what she's growing, and why we should be, too. She talks about the chemicals and contaminants in our food and WATER that we take in, and the virtually 100% cancer rates as well as other health issues in pets, and how we can avoid the heartbreak with her 6 Keys to Health and Healing Pets Naturally (free E Book available on the website!) and her Empowered Pet Parents Course. The message she wants people to take from this: "There is a proven path to healing. The Empowered Pet Parent Course gives you the tools, knowledge, and confidence to take back control of your pet's health. Address the Root Cause, Not Just Symptoms. Support detoxification. Reduce inflammation. Build resilience."Learn more about Dr Marlene Siegel at her website:https://drmarlenesiegel.com/You can get tips and stories on her Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drmarlenesiegel/Or on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DrMarleneSiegelHolisticVetYou can send me messages(this is new!)!Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here YouTube channel link is here You can DM me there or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com Website for Amy's Garden Jam is https://amysgardenjam.com/ (podcast has its own tab on this site!)How Do I Get There From Here by Jane Bolduc - listen to more at https://www.janebolduc.com/Podcast cover by Becca Kofron- follow here on Instagram here https://www.instagram.com/cute_but_loud/ and check out her awesome art projects. I loved meeting Brittany Hansen so much; it was such a gift spending time with her because she is a very well-rounded person! Brittany lives in Idaho with her spouse and children on 1/3 acre, and she is homesteading - or as she calls it Micro-homesteading, but it is totally effective! And some cool tips for city folks were shared, because she is using every inch of space, and has created a sharing community where she is, so she can access locally grown or made items, and offer some in return. We get to learn about raising QUAIL! I've heard of quail here and there, but have I actually seen a quail? Nope. Tasted their eggs? Nope again. Brittany's kids have an allergy to chicken eggs, and learned that quail eggs can be a good option, so she is raising her own quail to feed her family! (Check out my promo posts for this episode, because Brittany shared pictures with me!) I've been told since talking with her that quail might be a way around zoning with chickens, too...Brittany is immersed in the sustainability world - She is Co-Owner of Viiision, which, my understanding, is like a PR for companies to share their transparency of sustainability progress so that customers will see them to support them (Brittany, please correct me if I'm too far off!).AND, since we talked, she has started her own podcast, called "Who's Going to Fix This?" Talking about world issues, and who is taking the steps to make change happen. Brilliant! Only a couple of episodes in, and I'm hooked!Brittany's message she wants you to remember from our conversation: "If we want to change the world we have to lead with that change. If you want more sustainability adopt little changes that interweave that into your life until it becomes a part of you." I love so much that there are people in the fashion world who find fault with it, and have ideas how it could be made better - Victoria Scholz is that person, and her opinions feel so spot on to me - at least, a lot of the things she talks about are things I've noticed and wish someone would fix.Victoria's brand is called House of Dodos, and she just a couple of weeks ago completed her Masters in Sustainable Fashion. I briefly met Alyce Rose/AKA Ms Thrifty Rose/AKA Auntie Outside this January at Podfest, and I saw a post of hers where she advertised her 1st Wednesday Thrift Nic, and my podcaster radar alarm sounded - I had to hear more about this thrifting business - and boy did I! Alyce is CONNECTED, and she has an energy that you just want to be around - and she makes things happen!I just love Alyce's attitude that she doesn't worry about what others think. Her message she wants you to remember her for: "Do YOU your Way." Alyce shares her journey of creating her businesses, Ms. Thrifty Rose and Auntie Outside, and how they are interconnected. She discusses her approach to live sales, the creation of Thrift Nic events in Jacksonville, FL, and her philosophy on sustainability and confidence. Alyce also touches on her podcast, Auntie Outside, which addresses important community topics. Throughout the conversation, we emphasize the importance of focusing on oneself, embracing community, and the joy of giving items a second life. This was a super fun conversation, and it was so great to hear how much thrifting is embraced in the Jacksonville area! You can find Alyce on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/msthriftyrose/She's also on TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@msthriftyrose?lang=enYou can send me messages(this is new!)!Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here YouTube channel link is here You can DM me there or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com Website for Amy's Garden Jam is https://amysgardenjam.com/ (podcast has its own tab on this site!)How Do I Get There From Here by Jane Bolduc - listen to more at https://www.janebolduc.com/Podcast cover by Becca Kofron- follow here on Instagram here https://www.instagram.com/cute_but_loud/ and check out her awesome art projects. Send us a textWelcome back to Wildly Unplug, where we share stories of nature, conservation, and creativity—and explore what develops when we unplug and step outside.Today, I'm thrilled to introduce fellow podcaster Amy, creator and host of the Grounded in Maine podcast. With over 100 episodes, Amy's show explores the vast world of sustainability with a refreshing, relatable perspective. Our conversation covered everything from homesteading myths to simple acts of mindful living—and a few laughs about chickens, roosters, and worm bins along the way.Where to Find Amy
I found Clara Franken in a podcast newsletter, and started listening that morning to her podcast, Travel Devil, and the first episode I listened to was about the Trash Traveler; a man who travels and brings attention to himself by cleaning up the area, and I knew I wanted to hear all about what else she's learned hosting a podcast all about sustainable travel.Clara lives in Germany, but is from Belgium, so she travels a lot, but she mostly travels by train, or "slow" travel, as she calls it. And she explains why. And she really walks the walk, and it shows, as the week prior to this episode airing, she's featured on a billboard at the train station in Leipzig! (she has yet to see it with her own eyes - not for lack of trying - but her friend has seen it!)I love Clara's Instagram reels - she's very committed to sustainability, and she's also very entertaining! Y'all, this is very personal, and I'm so happy to have some of my closest friends join me to chat up our special place, Growing to Give. Growing to Give is a climate-friendly, volunteer-driven, nonprofit farming operation in Brunswick, Maine, that grows certified-organic vegetables for donation. I invited my friends Karin Sorensen, Robin Knight and Mary Aveno to help me to chat up our favorite non-profit where we all had the honor of helping to grow organic produce to donate to local food pantries to offer some highly nutritious produce to our less food secure neighbors. We all met there, and became fast friends, and more like family in the same purpose. We missed each other when we were absent, and celebrated every day we were together, and we did some great work (they still do, but Karin and I moved away), and have helped to grow and donate over 100,000 lbs of food! There are several other volunteers at Growing to Give - too many to gather for an episode and everyone get a word in, but that's how the magic happens.Growing to Give began as a dream of property owners Patty Carton and John Newlin in 2015, and 2017 was the first year officially growing, and Robin and I were the first 2 volunteers with Theda, the OG Farm Manager, with 1 Rimol greenhouse, and now it's a well-oiled machine of hundreds of volunteers annually, several hoop houses for growing, as well as farm skills workshops, elderberry workshops, and an annual Farmyard Jam fundraiser. It's a very special place of fun, healing and family. I have to say, I was so impressed with myself for getting through this conversation with sensation in my toes - I'm a total baby talking about blood and stuff, and I expected to have a hard time with it, but I was too interested to get queasy, I guess. Even the 2nd time listening to edit, it was still so fascinating! Feeling very lucky that Melissa Meadow crossed my Instagram feed. This opened my eyes to a ton of new information that's available.Melissa Meadow started her career early, and has been in the funeral home business since she was very young, evolved into being a mortician, and has tons of wisdom to share that we might not know about. I had only heard the phrase green burial in the last few months - let alone water cremation and others... AND I thought that cremation was more environmentally friendly than burying a whole body, because it took up more space - boy was I wrong about that! This is why I wanted to have Melissa on the podcast; in her words: "There are options that are better for the environment and align with those wanting transparency and options." I love that she shared so many new options! Have you already made plans for when you die? I had when my mom passed away, but that was in Maine, where I don't live anymore, so I have to plan again- and now I have more information to make a more informed decision. It may sound morbid, but it's an important topic, I think. The more you have planned out, the less traumatic your death will be - speaking from some experience...I hope you take some good info away from this conversation - I know I did!You can find Melissa at her website https://www.themodernmortician.com/ (there are so many helpful resources here!)Her Instagram page, where I found her, is both fascinating and entertaining: https://www.instagram.com/the_modern_morticianShe's also on TikTok here: https://www.tiktok.com/@the_modern_morticianAnd lastly on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/@The_Modern_MorticianYou can send me messages(this is new!)!Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here YouTube channel link is here You can DM me there or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com Website for Amy's Garden Jam is https://amysgardenjam.com/ (podcast has its own tab on this site!)How Do I Get There From Here by Jane Bolduc - listen to more at https://www.janebolduc.com/Podcast cover by Becca Kofron- follow here on Instagram here https://www.instagram.com/cute_but_loud/ and check out her awesome art projects. Do you know about Solar Thermal energy?? I didn't, either; I've heard of solar panels, solar farms, Community Solar... but not solar thermal. Enter Dan Razumovski, of Sun Catch Solar Thermal, out of Colorado! This might be more of a business or farm purchase- they're pricy, and take up a good amount of space, but it's a newer technology- and it's very cool! It stores electricity, so that if power goes out, you can still power your home for a week!If you're interested in solar thermal, though, Dan's company will help you to fill out grant applications and apply for tax breaks for updating, which, I could be wrong, but I haven't heard that many companies offer this service.Sun Catch website to learn more is here: https://sun-catch.com/Here's a video from the company that shows the solar thermal product: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hkw2d-Sw4UcThey're on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/suncatchltd/And on Linkedin here: https://www.linkedin.com/company/suncatch-ltd/You can send me messages(this is new!)!Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here YouTube channel link is here You can DM me there or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com Website for Amy's Garden Jam is https://amysgardenjam.com/ (podcast has its own tab on this site!)How Do I Get There From Here by Jane Bolduc - listen to more at https://www.janebolduc.com/Podcast cover by Becca Kofron- follow here on Instagram here https://www.instagram.com/cute_but_loud/ and check out her awesome art projects. I met Christopher Reynolds through Podmatch, and, as I usually do, I followed him on Instagram and TikTok to see what he's about, and his message is so beautiful. His stories are meaningful and deep, and you can't help but be drawn in and want to support whatever he's putting out. Christopher is a high-end landscape designer, and he discovered for himself what a powerful addition native plants are to his design. He encourages everyone to plant natives wherever we can - just add a few even, to add biodiversity to our area. He talks about ways that adding native plants will improve the land, and bring in beneficial insects and birds, and other critters, and the magnitude of those positive changes. All from just planting a few native plants! A small effort for huge and lasting results! He also talks about the personal project he's working on, Tierra Linda Park, that he's experimenting and bringing back to life using natives, and the results already are truly awesome!Christopher's own words of what he wants you to take away from this conversation from his guest form: "The solutions to many of our big problems are simple and fast in the scheme of things. We can all participate at whatever level we can and all acts, tiny and grand, contribute. If you know how easy it is, then you can't help but want to take action." Crystal McLain and I go back a few years, and she's been a great source of much needed "woo" in my world, and that has saved my bacon what feels like a million times. So I'm sharing one of my personal sustainability resources here... Crystal is a licensed Massage Therapist slash podcaster - her podcast has the same title as this episode. Her episodes are easy to listen to and forgiving. And I'll say it until I die, she has the cutest giggle. I personally am afraid of being seen as an imposter of someone who has their crap together, but she has magical powers and can see right through it. She's kind and has gentle suggestions to help. You'll see!I've shared her reels on Instagram several times, because they are exactly what I needed to hear, hoping it would reach someone else, too. Do you have a "woo" person, or practice in your life, to keep yourself in check so you can keep on keepin' on? Send me a message and let me know what/who yours is. Feel free to let Crystal know, too - she'd love it!Crystal's message she wants you to leave with: "YOU have the power to create a healthier, empowered, and more fulfilling human experience."You can find Crystal on TikTok here: https://www.tiktok.com/@crystal_mclain_creative?lang=eAnd on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/crystalmclaincreative/You can send me messages(this is new!)!Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here YouTube channel link is here You can DM me there or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com Website for Amy's Garden Jam is https://amysgardenjam.com/ (podcast has its own tab on this site!)How Do I Get There From Here by Jane Bolduc - listen to more at https://www.janebolduc.com/Podcast cover by Becca Kofron- follow here on Instagram here https://www.instagram.com/cute_but_loud/ and check out her awesome art projects. I really enjoyed learning about Cleaner Safer Water from Mark Miller, the CEO and Founder of this affordable, lifetime water filtration system. It just makes sense to have something like this in case of power outage. I'm still in awe of not having to buy filters for it ever, AND that it can provider water for up to 300 people! 1 system could take care of a whole neighborhood!Mark tells us all about the system, and gives some examples of how it works, and how helpful it has been for people who have it. These are Mark's words:"There is now a guaranteed way for you to have pure water for life. Enough for you, your family, and up to 300 other people in any emergency no matter how long it lasts. Even if there is no electricity. And a way to help the ecosystem by drastically reducing the number of plastic water bottles. You can now have better health with pure water for life and always be prepared for any emergency." Oh my gosh, Lynne Bowman was such a pleasure to spend time with! She is an absolute hoot, full of energy, and is adamant that we NOT diet - we should be eating intentionally, for enjoyment. She'll tell us all about it in this conversation. We're talking about preventing chronic disease and being overall healthy and happy! When asked what message Lynne wanted people to get from this conversation, she simply said "eat joyfully." And she brags about her gorgeous new cookbook Brownies For Breakfast, with not just fave recipes, but stories from around her table, where all the best moments happen. I had so much fun talking with Matthew Lesko! He's encouraging people to apply for grants to fund big ticket upgrades, updates, etc. He says "the money's there; YOU might as well have it!"He worked for 50 years for the wealthy, finding them more money, but now is helping the underdog to get ahead, because he can. He says it doesn't pay him a lot, but he actually feels good about his work now.Matthew is a trip! He has more energy than 5 people - he hosts almost daily a live chat with up to 15,000 people looking for ways to find funding for projects and life. He sometimes doesn't sound very serious, but then he inserts a phrase like "it makes you human, and it's hard to flunk a human; it's easy to flunk a robot." I'm so happy to have found him so he can share his tips with you! Merrymeeting Food Council reached out to me to ask if we could help to get the word out about their Farm Skills Program, because the deadline to apply for the next cohort is this Saturday, February 1. If you miss this cohort, they will still take applications for the next. Maine has set a BIG goal of eliminating food insecurity by 2030 (FIVE YEARS), and their plan includes growing more locally.Have you thought about farming at all, or gardening large scale? This is an incredible opportunity in my home state of Maine, and I'm going to be looking into where else this might be an option, because we need more farmers - we're losing them at an alarming rate, and with education from organizations like Merrymeeting Food Council, people can be set up for success! Please look into whether you have something like a Farm Skills Program near you, or take a Master Gardener Class, check out gardening books or classes, or volunteer at a farm near you for experience - knowing where our food comes from is becoming more important every day. This conversation is so informative and excited for the next generation of farmers in Maine. The algorithm was just right not too long ago that I happened upon Seb Jagoe's Instagram reel and became obsessed with his excitement and vast knowledge about soil and growing. It's always a little nerve wracking to reach out cold to a stranger, but this time, at least, Seb was just so gracious to talk with me and share this message. I've had many conversations about soil health on the podcast, but Seb's energy alone is exciting, and different. He talks about the history of soil health, and also when he first started talking about soil. We also discuss the importance of taking care of our soil; how it's not a thing - it's a process. He talks a. lot about Indigenous Knowledge, and food forests, and how the white men took food forests over from the Native Americans and depleted them with so many of our current practices (weed and pest control, monocropping, to name a couple). He has big plans to educate as many people as possible through his social media videos to share his passion for nutrient dense foods and attracting pollinators - all without fertilizers and pest control - because healthy soil and plants will ward off pests naturally!Seb asks that we consider quality over convenience whenever possible. The waste from overconsumption and cheap junk is poisoning our water and soil currently. He said when asked what the word sustainability means to him that sustainability isn't good enough - and he's not wrong! Who wants things to continue as they are, after all? Don't we want better? If not for ourselves, for the next generation? What an enlightening conversation! Listen here! I've been following Angela Hollowell for a couple of years now on Linkedin, and admiring all that she's doing with her podcast Honey and Hustle, and her writing and now documentary film making. When she said she's joined a new group that she's excited about and asked if anyone wanted to hear about it, I saw my chance and said YES PLEASE! She recently joined Dogwood Alliance - info is below:Dogwood Alliance is an environmental nonprofit organization based in Asheville, North Carolina. The group works to achieve broad-based support to end unsustainable forestry practices in the region. They focus in the marketplace to move large paper producers and customers away from sourcing their paper from endangered forests and towards increasing the use of post-consumer recycled fiber and other environmentally-friendly alternatives. Angela's company Rootful Media is committed to inclusive visual storytelling that promotes community-building, meaningful conversations, exceeded fundraising goals, and lasting change. Rootful Media works with regional organizations and national enterprises to amplify diverse groups and voices. I was able to watch the trailer on zoom of the documentary Trail Therapy, which is wonderful - telling the story of Sharon, a therapist who offers sessions while walking outside, as opposed to in a sterile room, to breathe in the fresh air and the scenery. She's also working on, or finishing up now, another documentary about forever chemicals that I'm really interested to learn more about. And her podcast Honey and Hustle is SO good! She focuses on business owners in NC that are doing great things - always an engaging conversation! Bronwyn Holm is an international speaker and spokesperson for Earth Food, a product of living microbiomes to feed our soil, and at the same time battle food insecurity and turn our health issues around. HOW, you ask? Bron talks at length of the benefits of Earth Food in this conversation, and she is SO proud of its capabilities, and rightfully so! She is sharing her message of saving our soil, which will raise the nutritional value of the food that we buy and make - even as a lazy farmHER (Bron's term)!Earth Food has been in Bron's family for decades. She went off after school to do other business ventures, but came back to embrace EarthFood and bring it forward to the masses. in her own words (in her brochure) " It took 27 years perfecting Earthfood. This conversation with Laura Hartley was like medicine for my soul - I hope this helps you to feel seen, too, because it was a message that I didn't expect or know that I needed to hear! I told Laura that I've felt a call to be more involved in what's happening in the world, but I lack the confidence to stand up when the time comes, and she actually has a course/program coming up in January to help people like me to steward our power and find empowerment and passion and education!Laura Hartley of Scintilla Centr, is an Activist, writer and a coach, helping changemakers unlearn and dismantle systems that inhibit our thriving, while visioning and seeing a more just, regenerative and loving world. Laura has a podcast called Public Love Project, which touches on a lot of topics she's passionate about, and is a great resource as well. Her course, also called Scintilla Centr also creates a community of like-minded people, and says (and I totally agree!) community gives acknowledgement and confidence, and that's so helpful!Learn more by listening to this full episode here! You can also learn more about Laura at her website here: https://www.laurahartley.comShe's on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/laura.h.hartley/You can follow Laura on Linkedin here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/laura-hartley-/Or on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/laurahartleypublicloveYou can send me messages(this is new!)!Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here , or on Facebook hereYouTube channel link is here You can DM me there or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com Website for Amy's Garden Jam is www.amysgardenjam.com (podcast has its own tab on this site!)How Do I Get There From Here by Jane Bolduc - listen to more at www.janebolduc.comPodcast cover by Becca Kofron- follow here on Instagram here https://www.instagram.com/cute_but_loud/ and/or check out her awesome art projects here: https://www.cutebutloud.com/ Grounded in Maine Podcast is hosted by Buzzsprout, the easiest podcast hosting platform with the best customer service. I loved this conversation with Janet Irizzary - she has tons of experience in the food business to base her upcoming course, My Mindful Kitchen (MMK) to reduce food waste for families.in her bio: "The MMK Method offers a solution to household food waste, addressing a critical environmental issue that contributes to climate change. Wasting food also wastes valuable water and energy, while releasing harmful greenhouse gases like methane and carbon dioxide, which account for 11% of global emissions. MMK Method empowers families to unite in reducing food waste and creating a more sustainable future. By fostering awareness, streamlining routines, and sharing meaningful moments, it helps families build lasting habits that benefit both the environment and their family's well-being." Who doesn't want that? That's a win-win situation!Janet has run several restaurants, and has seen a lot of food waste, but says the highest amount of food waste is in the home, so she's using the skills she's learned to help families work together to cut that back, and build stronger family ties in the meantime. She also is an instructor at the Culinary Institute of America, and has a degree in Education, so she's very qualified to put this program out to make a difference in home kitchens!MMK will be available January 2, 2025, and for CHEAP as the first version, so check it out and sign up - I know I am! "The MMK Method helps families create lasting, positive change—building a legacy of sustainability."Here's Janet's website link: https://www.mmkmethod.com/She's also on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/mmkmethod/And on Linkedin here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/janetirizarry/You can send me messages(this is new!)!Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here , or on Facebook hereYouTube channel link is here You can DM me there or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com Website for Amy's Garden Jam is www.amysgardenjam.com (podcast has its own tab on this site!)How Do I Get There From Here by Jane Bolduc - listen to more at www.janebolduc.comPodcast cover by Becca Kofron- follow here on Instagram here https://www.instagram.com/cute_but_loud/ and/or check out her awesome art projects here: https://www.cutebutloud.com/ Grounded in Maine Podcast is hosted by Buzzsprout, the easiest podcast hosting platform with the best customer service. This conversation with Bobby Donohue had me so fired up excited for the future!Bobby has single handedly developed an outstanding educational platform for school kids to teach them about climate change in a positive way, so they can problem solve with creativity and hope, and not doom and gloom. He also developed a track just for teachers, to help kids understand some of the more complex topics! This program is now streaming into 86 countries and 1000 schools and counting!Bobby has such a great energy for education, and has been motivated by considering his own children's future, and really, what better motivation is there? And I learned about the STEAM method of teaching/learning - Bobby's love for the arts is very apparent, and I'm so grateful he was here to share it. (We also had SO much fun!)Here's his message he hopes to leave us all with, in his words: "Everyone can contribute to a more sustainable future, no matter their resources or background. By educating the next generation with optimism and practical tools, we empower them to take ownership of the planet's future. Small, achievable actions—whether at home, in schools, or in the community—can collectively create meaningful change."If you're a teacher, or a parent hoping to help your child learn more about climate change, please find Bobby at his website: https://planetbonehead.com/He's also on BlueSky here: https://bsky.app/profile/planetbonehead.comHis YouTube channel is here: https://www.youtube.com/@planetboneheadAnd he's also on TikTok here: https://www.tiktok.com/@planetboneheadYou can send me messages(this is new!)!Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here , or on Facebook hereYouTube channel link is here You can DM me there or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com Website for Amy's Garden Jam is www.amysgardenjam.com (podcast has its own tab on this site!)How Do I Get There From Here by Jane Bolduc - listen to more at www.janebolduc.comPodcast cover by Becca Kofron- follow here on Instagram here https://www.instagram.com/cute_but_loud/ and/or check out her awesome art projects here: https://www.cutebutloud.com/ Grounded in Maine Podcast is hosted by Buzzsprout, the easiest podcast hosting platform with the best customer service. David Auge is a fascinating person who has been in the sustainability realm for a while now, so understands it on a much deeper level than some (possibly a lot) of us. So much so, that he just had a book published by the name of this episode - Man's Search for Sustainability. He talks about a book that he was inspired by, Man's Search for Meaning, by Victor Frankl. In his book, David focuses on bees and locusts - how we consider one more valuable than another, their differences and their strengths, and how they relate to sustainability - that is fascinating! Something I certainly never considered before, but I'm so glad David and I discussed it! These are David's words: "Sustainability is a normative term - one that describes a lot. As a result, it describes comparative choices in a journey - not an end point." It's about the journey, not the destination... Speaking with Kent Scott of Too Long Dogs Homestead just lit me up, because we have so many ideas in common - he's just closer to the dream than I am. I'm so inspired by all the things he's up to, and in such a short time! My very favorite thing so far that I've learned about him is his community involvement, and you know I'm obsessed with Community Sufficiency - taking care of each other and sharing resources for a bigger purpose...Kent and his family moved to Alberta Canada from Vancouver in 2022 and when they saw their house, he and his spouse could see where things would go, and were already making plans. When they moved, Kent brought a shovel in their vehicle, knowing the moving truck would be a few days, and he could at least dig some holes for the trees that were on their way. No time to waste with a Zone 3b Canadian Permaculture Food forest! Kent and his spouse both work full time and are raising 2 kids and 2 dogs, so they repurpose and thrift a lot of things and keep their end goal in mind, and do what they can a little at a time to get there. These are Kent's words "You eat an elephant one bite at time, not in one sitting. Make your grand plan and lay it out based on mature tree canopy size. Then you can take little bites, always towards the end goal." So true, Kent. So true.Kent is really active on Instagram - give a follow, he loves it! https://www.instagram.com/toolongdogshomestead/You can send me messages(this is new!)!Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here , or on Facebook hereYouTube channel link is here You can DM me there or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com Website for Amy's Garden Jam is www.amysgardenjam.com (podcast has its own tab on this site!)How Do I Get There From Here by Jane Bolduc - listen to more at www.janebolduc.comPodcast cover by Becca Kofron- follow here on Instagram here https://www.instagram.com/cute_but_loud/ and/or check out her awesome art projects here: https://www.cutebutloud.com/ Grounded in Maine Podcast is hosted by Buzzsprout, the easiest podcast hosting platform with the best customer service. When I say this conversation was a LONG time in the making, I'm just so glad that Victoria was still available when I got back to her - we decided it was the right time now, and that's why it happened as it did. (so grateful for her cheery outlook)Victoria lives in Massachusetts and she has been working on outdoor classrooms for many years, and is doing great work for her community and even wider with her awesome podcast Outdoor Classrooms!I loved these 2 snips from Victoria's guest form: "It's vital for our mental health and the future of our planet to raise our children outdoors, while also creating communities that understand the value of nature"and also"I believe children need to have a relationship with nature in order to become our future advocates for protecting our earth."I loved talking with Victoria, and all the wonderful things she's doing to expose kids and hopefully their parents and teachers to nature - there's SO much to learn outside - go on, get out there! Oh my gosh, I just loved this conversation with Monica and Cindy of Rapt Gift Wrap! Their business is fabric wrap, to reduce the paper waste from gift wrapping, and it's so beautiful! I thought the timing of this was perfect; hopefully will give folks time to think about gift waste before the rush.Monica O'Neil and Cindy Estes are friends who started Rapt in Massachusetts to help reduce the paper waste in gift giving - the amount of paper after the holiday season fills dozens of FOOTBALL FIELDS, and they saw a problem and are doing something to try to fix it!One of my questions was is it appropriate to take the fabric wrap back to reuse it, or ask if someone will use it, and they have answers to that! They also do some tutorials on the YouTube podcast episode, so check that out - the link is here: https://youtu.be/mut4rECnUXc I started collecting and saving fabric scraps last year, but then I didn't know what to do with it, so very grateful for the opportunity to see it happen! They also have several tutorials on their website https://www.raptgiftwrap.com/ They teach the ancient Japanese wrap called Furoshiki and it's so beautiful, and Monica and Cindy say it's much faster than wrapping with paper, even! You can drool over their beautiful wrapping styles and fabrics on the Instagram page here: https://www.instagram.com/raptgiftwrap/And on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/raptgiftwrapYou can send me messages(this is new!)!Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here , or on Facebook hereYouTube channel link is here You can DM me there or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com Website for Amy's Garden Jam is www.amysgardenjam.com (podcast has its own tab on this site!)How Do I Get There From Here by Jane Bolduc - listen to more at www.janebolduc.comPodcast cover by Becca Kofron- follow here on Instagram here https://www.instagram.com/cute_but_loud/ and/or check out her awesome art projects here: https://www.cutebutloud.com/ Grounded in Maine Podcast is hosted by Buzzsprout, the easiest podcast hosting platform with the best customer service. I'm talking with Nick Bergmann of Peace House Studio- Nick and his spouse Kate are creating children's clothes that can be bought back when outgrown and patched up and passed onto a new child with even more fun personality! (check out the cutie patootie top in the cover, and also in my Instagram promo!)We talk about the start of Peace House Studio, and the Three Pillars of sustainability: people, planet and profit, and what that means to them. We also discuss Organic vs. sustainability: Does organic always mean better or has it morphed into a marketing term? This is a deep subject, but one Peace House Studio cares deeply about and is working with; should they purchase organic cotton from India and have it travel across the world, or prioritize less travel and work with more local providers in this country? This is the organic conversation they're having. I loved this conversation with Nick, learning about the clothing startup processes and thought patterns, their trials and goals, and how transparent they are about sustainability. I was recently approached by Mykhailo and Vlad of Terra Mora on Instagram and was just so impressed with what they're offering that I wanted to feature them on the podcast and learn more about them. These two are both 21 yearrs old, and in the beginning of the current Russia/Ukraine war, lost their homes and just about everything, but they've built themselves back up, and are dedicated to building a sustainable world for the next generation (Mykhailo has a 1 year old son and spouse, so very motivated). Jr Sparrow and I have been friends for a couple of years, but have talked more since I've moved to his home state - even though he doesn't live here now, he's got lots of memories here (and his mom), so he's sharing all kinds of good tips with me. We talk about soil, critters - cute and less cute, and his first sustainability venture as a young person cleaning up after race track events (there's a pro race track less than 15 minutes from me). He is a real wealth of knowledge!Jr has 3 (THREE) podcasts: WV Uncommonplace, WV Uncommonplace Interviews and Sessions, and Sparrows Under Review. Kenya Rothstein is the host of the podcast Thank You For Saying NO, about things happen in life that feel impossible and hard, but turn out to be the best thing for us. I've been following her for a little while now, and at some point she messaged me and said something like "your podcast is about sustainability - I need to be a guest!" I wasn't going to say no - definitely not to an attorney...Kenya is an Environmental Attorney in CA - and soon adding Washington DC! She works for the Plaintiff, and gets to support our oceans and air - how cool is that? She has so many ideas that people can get involved in protecting our natural spaces! My biggest takeaway was for my new area, to talk with restaurants and ask them to advise customers to ASK for a straw or plastic cutlery, and ask the restaurants to make that a new practice, and to talk to them in a way that helps them realize there's a way to help save money AND save waste. I love how simple that sounds, and how doable it can be. This is a shorty, you guys (you're welcome!) - just thought I'd give a little update, since some huge life shifts have happened for me - some, maybe a lot of you, follow on social media, so you know that I recently moved - short update: it's mostly going well! Also, as it has been for a while now, menopause was brought up - October is Menopause Awareness Month - as well as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and Alzheimers Awareness Month - and the election, and all the tension that accompanies - to which I'm just going to say BE KIND please. Crazy weather and high stress is so hard on everyone, and some of us could be on the brink of a breakdown... we don't always know who needs just a moment of kindness, so please just try. But I'll be posting more menopause stuff as it comes up - in my life, and in my friends' lives, it has been helpful. If you've experienced symptoms, please pay attention! I seriously want to scream what I'm learning from the rooftops, because the new study results are life changing - for real! There are several books and documentaries coming out that are blowing the lid off of the darkness we've been living in, and I'm so ready for acknowledgement and validation and RELIEF!I said this in the episode, but there are definitely lonely times in my new place, so if you need some time away, give me a heads up, and my door will always be open. This is a beautiful place, southern Virginia. I'll feed you well - I'm in tight with the farmers, and my little food forest is coming along.....You can send me messages(this is new!)!Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here , or on Facebook hereYouTube channel link is here You can DM me there or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com Website for Amy's Garden Jam is www.amysgardenjam.com (podcast has its own tab on this site!)How Do I Get There From Here by Jane Bolduc - listen to more at www.janebolduc.comPodcast cover by Becca Kofron- follow here on Instagram here https://www.instagram.com/cute_but_loud/ and/or check out her awesome art projects here: https://www.cutebutloud.com/ Grounded in Maine Podcast is hosted by Buzzsprout, the easiest podcast hosting platform with the best customer service. Natalie Hodge is my very first Virginia podcast guest since moving here, and I'm so excited to share our conversation with you! She just recently (this year!) started gardening in containers, and she is HOOKED! I love her story of how and why she started, and how excited she gets talking about growing her own food on her balcony - and hearing about her future plans-- "they" say in the homesteading world that chickens are the gateway drug to farming, but growing your own food brings out a very special experience that hooks you in as well! I didn't ask, but I wonder how long until she calls herself a "plant lady" or "plant mom?"I joined a few Facebook groups before moving to VA, and I happened to see Natalie posting about her Foodscapes program on the local news, and I felt I needed to reach out to her. We learned so much about each other in our first Zoom meeting, and I was just obsessed with her story of not being able to grow anything until she spent time with them - the plant people will understand what we mean--I couldn't possibly leave out her awesome message that she hopes you'll take away from this conversation - "Keep it simple...small changes matter." LOVE this - it's so true!Natalie has her own media company called Rudy's Girl Media, and she's been working with a Zero Waste program theough the VA Public Media to produce her Foodscapes segment. Ep 101: A while back, we were talking with one of our clients, and he shared that there was one area where he felt powerless: his physical health. Specifically, he had been dealing with chronic pain that, despite his best efforts, seemed to impact his ability to fully enjoy retirement. That made us realize that many retirees, while they've planned for their finances, social lives, and even hobbies, often don't anticipate the physical challenges that may come with aging, especially how to manage chronic pain. How do you maintain a positive attitude and find purpose when pain becomes part of your daily life? How can you continue to live a fulfilling and meaningful retirement despite physical limitations? Our guest today is a sought-after speaker who believes in the power of a good story to help, inspire, and motivate people to lead their uncommon and extraordinary lives. By combining his twelve-year cancer journey with his diverse business, athletic coaching, and hostage negotiating background, he shares his wealth of knowledge on Managing & Overcoming Chronic Pain in Retirement. I was thinking that the title of this episode should be "How on Earth did Amy score The Old Farmer's Almanac on the Podcast?? But it was too many characters... Shall we make it the UNofficial title?Carol Connare is the 14th editor of The Old Farmer's Almanac, and only the 2nd woman- since 1792! She talks about the beginnings of the Almanac, and about the great topics discussed (besides the weather), like recipes, fun animal stories, lifestyle trends, and so on. She and her team collect a pool of topics and articles, then pick the best of all of those - and they also respond to emails, phone calls and snail mail! Sometimes they have to do research before responding, but they ALWAYS do! Millions of readers, and anyone who writes in gets a response, which seems unheard of, but so very cool.A couple of listeners, Jenny Boghun and Brenda Simmons (both previous podcast guests!) wrote in questions, and they were all answered inside this conversation, in almost traditional Almanac form. I know for sure that Jenny is going to love this!Have you checked out the Almanac before? It covers so many articles and topics about gardening and paying attention to Earth's weather patterns, because nature can help provide a fulfilling, healthy lifestyle. And we all want that, right? The official Almanac website is here: https://www.almanac.com/ (there are cool tools, articles, recipes, etc here!)You can follow The Old Farmer's Almanac on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/theoldfarmersalmanacOr on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/theoldfarmersalmanac/You can send me messages(this is new!)!Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here , or on Facebook hereYouTube channel link is here You can DM me there or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com Website for Amy's Garden Jam is www.amysgardenjam.com (podcast has its own tab on this site!)How Do I Get There From Here by Jane Bolduc - listen to more at www.janebolduc.comPodcast cover by Becca Kofron- follow here on Instagram here https://www.instagram.com/cute_but_loud/ and/or check out her awesome art projects here: https://www.cutebutloud.com/ Grounded in Maine Podcast is hosted by Buzzsprout, the easiest podcast hosting platform with the best customer service. I loved this conversation with Rhonda Linn so much - we have a lot in common - she's just a bit ahead of me. A big one for me is the title of this episode - A Homesteading State of Mind - you don't know this, but that was almost the name of this podcast! For real!Rhonda is a writer, so I'm going to use some of her words, so I don't make it all clumsy- Her Substack is called Earthen Jar; Stars, and it's so beautiful - I highly recommend! We're talking about Homesteading mostly - Rhonda lives pretty simply (LOVE that!), except on 36 acres, so it's not SO simple--- She started her homestead journey while living in an apartment! So her words below are from personal experience. Here are her words about what she hopes you will take from this conversation:"Anyone can be a homesteader no matter where you live or what resourcesyou have. It's a mindset. Also living by the seasons allows us to live withgrace and peace and makes new solutions and possibilities emerge where wecouldn't see them before."Her words are so lovely and graceful, and she is an inspiration of taking things day by day and just doing the best you can. So grateful for this conversation with her!You can find Rhonda's Substack(writing) here: https://rhondalinn.substack.com/Her website is here: https://rhondalinn.comYou can find her on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/rhonda.linn.3She's also on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/rhonda.m.linn/and her Linkedin is here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/rhondalinnvirtualsolutions/You can send me messages(this is new!)!Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here , or on Facebook hereYouTube channel link is here You can DM me there or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com Website for Amy's Garden Jam is www.amysgardenjam.comHow Do I Get There From Here by Jane Bolduc - listen to more at www.janebolduc.comPodcast cover by Becca Kofron- follow here on Instagram here https://www.instagram.com/cute_but_loud/ and/or check out her awesome art projects here: https://www.cutebutloud.com/ Grounded in Maine Podcast is hosted by Buzzsprout, the easiest podcast hosting platform. Wow, I loved this conversation with Aimee Gallo! She calls herself 'unapologetically candid,' in her podcast description, and I'm 100% here for it. Aimee's not afraid to question or disagree with what we've been hearing our whole lives about nutrition on her podcast, Blasphemous Nutrition. She's not just being contrary; she's been studying nutrition her whole life (since 12 years old, REALLY!). I just love how Aimee tells you that we've basically been fed garbage in the understanding that we have been given, that there are no real studies to back statements up - she focuses on meat a lot - a very controversial subject, of course. And she spent several years Vegan, so she's really speaking from her research AND life experience. She's a Nutrition Coach, by the way---She also talks about how food nourishes us, not just 'is it healthy or not.' I mentioned a recent post about electrolytes, and how that kind of blew my mind, and also just made me really think about what I KNOW about. my food. This conversation is entertaining and enlightening, and really makes you consider what we know. This conversation with Jane Lee Rankin was so easy - it felt like it just flowed for me - it helps that we are very like-minded... Whatever it was, I had the best time getting to know her! Jane Lee Rankin is a 2 time author, and also a farmer in Agritourism, opening up her farm so that others can come and feel the peace that comes with farming (or maybe just digging in the dirt and interacting with animals), and an active community member. She is also a public speaker, talking about Agritourism and entrepreneurship.Jane talks about Agritourism, her journey to living on Apple Hill Farm, an old apple orchard, and how it ALLLLL started: an alpaca. Yup, you read that. She moved far from where she was, and took on an old farm, and started this whole dream because she came face to face with an alpaca. Jane's message she wanted you to leave with: "Live your dream."I think I'll just leave it at that. You can find Jane Lee Rankin just about everywhere - adding all her links below:Jane's and the farm's websites: https://janeleerankin.com/https://applehillfarmnc.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/jane.l.rankin.1also here: https://www.facebook.com/applehillfarmInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/janeleerankin/and here: https://www.instagram.com/applehillfarmnc/Her YouTube channel is here: https://www.youtube.com/@JaneLeeRankinAHFAnd on Linkedin here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jane-lee-rankin-948732a9/You can send me messages(this is new!)!Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here , or on Facebook hereYouTube channel link is here You can DM me there or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com Website for Amy's Garden Jam is www.amysgardenjam.comHow Do I Get There From Here by Jane Bolduc - listen to more at www.janebolduc.comPodcast cover by Becca Kofron- follow here on Instagram here https://www.instagram.com/cute_but_loud/ and/or check out her awesome art projects here: https://www.cutebutloud.com/ Grounded in Maine Podcast is hosted by Buzzsprout, the easiest podcast hosting platform. Ep 099: In recent years, we've witnessed significant shifts in economic landscapes, career trajectories, and personal life choices, leading to a rise in the number of young adults returning to their parental homes. These individuals often head back home for a variety of reasons, including economic pressures like student loan debt, job loss, or the high cost of living. For others, it's a strategic move during career transitions or a personal decision influenced by life events such as divorce or health issues. This growing trend presents unique challenges and opportunities for families. For parents, it can mean adjusting to a new household dynamic and redefining boundaries and roles. For the returning adult children, it often involves balancing independence with respect for family rules and routines. The interplay of these dynamics can be complex, requiring open communication, mutual understanding, and a bit of patience. To help us navigate these waters, we're thrilled to have a very special guest who is a renowned expert in life transition. She has spent years studying and working with families to address the challenges of multi-generational living. Our guest today will share insights on why this trend is on the rise, how it impacts both parents and adult children, and what strategies can be employed to make this living arrangement work effectively for everyone involved. Please welcome Ellen Rothstein to The Retirement Success in Maine Podcast! Chapters: Welcome, Ellen Rothstein! [3:15] What does it mean to have Boomerang Children? Ooh, this conversation with Kyira Wackett was so good! Kyira hosts her own podcast, Untethering Shame, and brought such a necessary conversation for me, as every week I'm talking about all of these cool people who are doing amazing things in sustainability, and this week we're talking about SHAME, which feels so important right now. It's so true, and I often think about people who feel shame around sustainability - folks who feel like if they can't afford the expensive things that say sustainable on them, they're not allowed to feel like a part of the solution. I feel it, too! I've had people that I know hang their head and mention something they feel bad about around plastic/recycling or composting; like I'm a perfect person who does everything right... I'm also human - AND if you notice, I'm talking to these folks so I can learn, too, and highlight what THEY'RE doing... Nobody's perfect, and there's no such thing (that I'm aware of) as perfect sustainability. We should only be comparing ourselves to our yesterday self, and nobody else. Easier said than done, I know, but that's the goal- Kyira, a licensed therapist AND coach, has so many enlightening thoughts on this topic, obviously, and I'm thrilled that she was able to share them with us all, and hopefully not just ease our minds but also empower us.These are her words, from her guest form: "There is no all or nothing, you don't have to be perfect, and that the fear we all have about the state of the world is real, but that it can't be your primary motivation, or you will get stuck in pain and fear and negative self-talk. The pressure will be rooted to the wrong purpose." I've been following Alexa Pavan for a long time on Instagram - I love everything she posts and stands for, and I was so thrilled when she said yes to a conversation! I may have been a little giddy talking with her... Usually I like to get the back story of a guest, and get to the point where their life changed to be more sustainable, but Alexa doesn't have that - she grew up in a pretty sustainable household, and just extended it to include the rest of the world. In her social media, she touches on shopping small, to support local businesses instead of padding the pockets of the ultra rich - and also to stop the big trucks from polluting the air. She talks about keeping our oceans clean, and why that's important (her parents own a scuba diving business in FL, so she's very passionate about the ocean). She talks about imperfect sustainability, and why we shouldn't focus on doing EVERYTHING, but do what we're able to, and if everyone did what they could, we can make a real difference. And to get in touch with nature - spend more time outside and appreciate what's around usAlexa encourages community advocacy, and to remember that our voices matter! We can support with our wallets and our voices.Check out Alexa's website here: https://www.alexapavan.com/Her awesome Instagram is here: https://www.instagram.com/gogreenwithalexa/Her TikTok is here: https://www.tiktok.com/@gogreenwithalexaAnd her Facebook is here: https://www.facebook.com/gogreenwithalexaYou can send me messages(this is new!)!Support the Show. Please follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here , or on Facebook hereYouTube channel link is here You can DM me there or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com Website for Amy's Garden Jam is www.amysgardenjam.comHow Do I Get There From Here by Jane Bolduc - listen to more at www.janebolduc.comPodcast cover by Becca Kofron- follow here on Instagram here https://www.instagram.com/cute_but_loud/ and/or check out her awesome art projects here: https://www.cutebutloud.com/ Grounded in Maine Podcast is hosted by Buzzsprout, the easiest podcast hosting platform.
