Brian interviews Dr. Jenny Mathers. Dr. Mathers is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of International Politics at Aberystwyth University on the west coast of Wales. Her research and teaching are focused mainly in two areas: Russian politics and security; and women and war. She is currently working on three projects relating the war in Ukraine: the militarization of Russia's children; Russia's soldiers' mothers and their relationship with the Russian state; and a book examining Russia's war in Ukraine from the perspective of feminist security studies. Dr. Jenny Mathers talks tonight about Russia's war in Ukraine from A Feminist Perspective.
Every time Ukraine pulls off another ‘improbable' victory, or achieves a substantial breakthrough, journalists and military analysts return to their familiar refrain that ‘the war will now grind on indefinitely' or that ‘there will be no more advances until spring'. From the battle of Kyiv, to Kharkiv and now Kherson, the stark evidence of extraordinary Ukrainian capability and boundless Russian incompetence is quickly forgotten. It seems that underestimating Ukraine's potential and over-estimating Russia's strength is a comfort zone the experts cannot tear themselves away from. The war is not going well for Russia. His propagandists on state TV are making ever more aggressive and genocidal demands against Ukraine – doubling down on its right to exist; hardliners are making their voices heard as never before, and Putin is striking out vindictively against Ukraine. How did we get here, and what is the endgame for Putin's regime and his dreams of imperial revanchism? Dr Jenny Mathers, senior lecturer in International Politics at Aberystwyth University, on Russian reaction after Ukraine's deadly attack on its military.
In September 2021, Russian applied a Foreign Agent law to citizens who report or share information on crime, corruption and especially themes related to the military and security services. But the origins of the law go back much further, to 2012, when Russia started to regulate Public Associations, NGOs and other private financial entities. At first the law was likened to US legislation that limits the activities of lobbyists employed by foreign governments. But since its introduction, the scope of the law has been progressively expanded. Now it can be described as a blunt and indiscriminate weapon that's being used to crush every vestige of civil society and independent media in Russia. Today, I'm discussing the impact of the Foreign Agent law on journalism, civil society organisations and political opposition, and we'll be looking at the effect it has had on some specific groups and individuals, such as Echo Moscow, TV Rain, and Navalny's team, as well as the work of Memorial. We discuss a subculture of women that have often been ridiculed and marred as hysterical, obsessive, juvenile and embarrassing and ask whether fangirls have been misunderstood? We hear from playwright and songwriter, Yve Blake who has created the award-winning musical ‘FANGIRLS' that's currently touring at Sydney Opera House and Hannah Ewens, a music writer at Rolling Stone, a former fan girl and author of ‘Fan girls: Scenes from Modern Music Culture'. New research shows increasing numbers of young women in the UK are suffering injuries and other health problems because of the growing popularity of anal sex among straight couples. We hear from one of the authors of the report - Lesley Hunt who is a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust - and also from Claudia Estcourt from the British Association for Sexual Health and HIV. If you're a mother in Russia and have ten children, you'll now be rewarded by the President. That's because Vladimir Putin is bringing back the “Mother Heroine” award which Joseph Stalin introduced in 1944 to encourage large families after tens of millions Soviet citizens died in the Second World War. This time around, women will get a one-off payment of one million roubles - that's £13,500 - after their tenth child is one years old, as long as the other nine children are still alive. Mothers will also get gold medals with the Russian flag on and the country's coat of arms. Dr Jenny Mathers is a Senior Lecturer of International Politics at Aberystwyth University, and an expert on Russian politics and security. We have a performance of ‘I do this all the time' from the artist Self Esteem And pockets - do you get overjoyed when you realise your dress has pockets, and do you get angry when you realise those new pair of jeans have fake ones? Data tells us that the majority of women want pockets on our clothes but don't always get them. Comedian Tiff Stevenson tells us about her love for pockets. Fashion historian Amber Butchart delves into the fascinating history of women's pockets - from tie round the waist bags to the Suffragette suit, she explains how pockets have evolved over time influenced by surrounding, politics and cultures.
