BONUS: Gojko Adzic on Optimizing Products for Long-Tail Users (Agile Online Summit 2024 Replay) In this BONUS episode, we revisit Gojko Adzic's insightful interview at the Agile Online Summit 2024. Gojko, an award-winning author and software expert, unpacks the principles behind his latest book, Lizard Optimization, offering a fresh perspective on improving product usability by addressing the needs of long-tail users. From learning from unexpected user behaviors to refining products with a systematic approach, this episode is filled with practical tips for product teams and Agile practitioners. What is Lizard Optimization? Drawing from his experiences as a product developer, Gojko introduces the idea of Lizard Optimization. He discusses how observing unexpected user behaviors led him to refine his SaaS tools like Narakeet and MindMup. By focusing on usability challenges and unusual patterns, he has turned serendipity into actionable insights. “Users aren't stupid—they're just finding creative ways to get value from your product. Listen to them.” Gojko explains the inspiration behind the metaphor of the “Lizardman constant,” a concept from a Scott Alexander blog post. He describes how this principle applies to product optimization: understanding and addressing the 4% of surprising, unexplainable behaviors can uncover opportunities for innovation. “The job isn't to judge users—it's to explore why they're doing what they're doing and how we can help them succeed.” The High-Level Process of Lizard Optimization Gojko outlines the systematic process described in his book to leverage unexpected user behavior: Observe Misuse: Identify how users deviate from expected patterns. Extract Insights: Focus on one unexpected behavior as a signal. Remove Obstacles: Help users achieve their goals more easily. Monitor Impacts: Detect and adjust for unintended consequences. “Start monitoring for the predictable but unexpected—those hidden gems can unlock your next big feature.” Practical Advice for Product Teams For teams ready to apply these concepts, Gojko emphasizes the importance of expanding observability tools to include product metrics and not just technical ones. He shares how tracking unpredictable user actions can inspire impactful changes. “About a third of what we do delivers value—focus on finding where unexpected value lies.” Recommended Resources To dive deeper into these ideas, Gojko recommends: Trustworthy Online Controlled Experiments by Ron Kohavi Evidence Guided by Tim Herbig LizardOptimization.org “Experimentation and evidence-based decision-making are the keys to building better products.” Closing Thoughts: “Look for the Unexpected” Gojko's parting advice for Agile practitioners is simple yet powerful: Look for the unexpected. By embracing surprises in user behavior, teams can transform minor inconveniences into major opportunities for growth. “The unexpected is where innovation begins.” About Gojko Adzic Gojko Adzic is an award-winning author, speaker, and product creator. His books, including Lizard Optimization, Impact Mapping, and Specification by Example, have become essential reads for Agile practitioners and product teams worldwide. Gojko is a 2019 AWS Serverless Hero, the winner of the 2016 European Software Testing Outstanding Achievement Award, and the 2011 Most Influential Agile Testing Professional Award. He has also co-founded several successful SaaS tools, including Narakeet, MindMup, and Votito. You can link with Gojko Adzic on LinkedIn.

What if you could get paid to grow your email list? According to Adrienne Hill, hosting a virtual summit is one of the best ways to expand your network and add new email subscribers–all without spending a dollar on ads. Adrienne is a Project Manager with experience managing multi-million dollar launches for Fortune 500 companies. As the Founder and CEO of Build A Life By Design, she's channeled her corporate expertise into building her own brand and helping other entrepreneurs thrive online. Through her courses, coaching programs, and done-for-you services, Adrienne helps entrepreneurs activate Social Media Sales Machines so they can scale their business to 6-figures and beyond. Why Summits? With her background in project management, Adrienne viewed summits as the simplest way to launch her business. Instead of relying on one person (herself) to get everything done, she realized she could leverage a large group of people to create something even more powerful. In her first summit, Adrienne brought together 20 contributors to share their expertise through an interview series. As the host, everyone who signed up for the free event went straight to her email list. She was able to grow her inbox by 1,000 people in just two weeks. The other contributors also walked away happy, having grown their list by dozens or even hundreds. Adrienne begins planning her summits three months in advance–but once the planning stage is over, promotion is surprisingly easy. With 20 contributors all required to promote the event to their audience, you have the opportunity to reach thousands of new people. Use a Summit to Fuel Your Live Launch A core part of Adrienne's summit strategy is the VIP ticket: a low-cost offer for attendees to upgrade their tickets and enjoy more summit resources. This keeps the event profitable and allows her to make anywhere between $10-94k on each summit. She then puts a portion of that revenue away to spend on ads during her next live launch. Adrienne has found her sweet spot to be hosting four summits a year. In between those events, she runs paid ad campaigns to continue growing her email list. Then when it comes time to launch, her list is full of warm leads. Enjoy this episode with CEO Adrienne Hill… Quotes “To me, the art of sales is learning to put someone else's needs above your own.”  “People who are okay with the status quo and they like having a job with the nine-to-five security and all that stuff, they think entrepreneurs are right out of their minds…we're comfortable with a level of risk they would never be.” “The thing about summits is people either don't know they exist at all or they're highly misunderstood…but just like any business strategy, if you execute it well you're going to get great results.” “I don't want to sit there and hustle myself to death on social media and hope something sticks.” “It's a great business-building tool and it's also a great networking tool.” “You never need to run ads to a summit. It's 100% organic, 100% free, zero ad spend. That's one of the things I love about it.” “In the entrepreneurial world, every time you have a failure, every time a lesson comes in or something falls apart, you grab those learning moments and treasure them. Because that's exactly what you need to improve your performance.” Links mentioned in this episode: Claim your virtual workshop seat: https://www.socialsalesmachine.com/VLL_free Visit Adrienne's website: https://www.buildalifebydesign.com/  Connect with Adrienne on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/adrienne-hill-coaching

For anyone that grew up in a household where the word love was seldom said or shown, it can be the only thing that we remember about our relationship with our parents. Today's guest can certainly speak to that. Brian Ondrako is a father, author, sales consultant and the host of the Just Get Started podcast. In his newest kids' book, The Magically Magnificent Mysterious Mind, he reminds us that the happier we are, the happier it will make others around us feel. As a single Dad, Brian is intentional about the time he spends with his son. He talks about how his grandparents had the biggest impact on him as a child, and now that he's a father, he wants to be that person for him. In our conversation, we talk about how kids are happiest when they're loved and supported, how he's handling his son's YouTuber aspirations, and the four pillars that Brian says can make or break any relationship. Why entrepreneurs struggle with sales and how Brian helps clients climb over that wall with honesty and empathy. Kids are happiest when they feel supported and encouraged to try out new things and learn from their experiences. It's easy to be rude and harder to be kind. Let's raise our kids to be kind. Gentlemen, I am absolutely pumped to welcome Dr. Kelly Flanagan back to the show. He is many things to many people, and he's a legendary member of our brotherhood. Kelly has a new book coming out this week titled, The Unhiding of Elijah Campbell, and I can't wait to dig into it. I hope you'll check it out too. One topic that we've discussed many times over the years on the podcast and our Online Summits is how we can all be better at being vulnerable with our friends and especially our family. And we really unpacked that in this conversation as we talked about how we all have a tendency to hide ourselves and our truest thoughts to avoid feeling shame. It's natural to want to hide our crap, our secrets, and the things that we don't like about ourselves. But doing that doesn't promote and create connection. And when we unhide ourselves, there's freedom to be found there. Kelly shares a fantastic story of someone who gave an advance copy of his new book to their friend's 95-year-old mom. And after reading it, her mom shared some things with her daughter that she had never talked about before. So it's not just freedom but healing that can be found when we unhide ourselves. We covered a lot of ground in this conversation. We talked about the importance of facing your past to improve your present, the challenge of saying no to our kids, and how love isn't always about being in agreement with each other, but being able to hold space for disagreement as well. So much good stuff there. One more thing: If you purchase Kelly's book (and I highly recommend that you do) please leave a review on Amazon. Even if you're only two chapters into it, you can still share your thoughts before you finish the book. It helps so much in spreading the word, and reviews help us too. So here's my gift to you: If you leave an honest review of this show, take a screenshot of it and send it to info@frontrowdads.com with your address. I will send a free copy of the book to the first 5 people. (US Residents only) Mark Your Calendars and Sign up! Kelly Flanagan Podcast Highlights How to stop hiding your authentic self and learn how to fully express yourself with your kids, spouse, friends and family in a healthy way. The importance of welcoming, and accepting, all the parts of your personality and every role you play in interpersonal relationships. Why entrepreneurs are future-focused and often fail to face the past, and how that harms them in the long run. Fully revealing and unhiding yourself isn't always sharing ourselves with others, sometimes it's actually about helping ourselves and our own confidence. True love isn't always about being in agreement with each other, love is being able to hold space for disagreement. When we send our kids to school, are we hoping that they'll only learn the bare minimum? How much more would they learn if they were challenged and encouraged to explore their curiosity and creativity? Imagine sending your kids to a place where they look forward to being there every single day and are encouraged to be the best version of themselves. Today's guests have not only imagined it, but they've created it. Tim Nikolaev and Chris Coggin have reimagined the middle school experience for children through Peak Collective, where they focus on increasing self-awareness and developing self-confidence through rites of passage. It didn't take long to realize how good these guys are by the changes I saw in Tiger's mood and mindset after being part of this group. And it fires me up to see him excited to go to school and learn and willing to bond with other kids. Tim and Chris have created a community of adults and kids built on love, trust, and lifelong learning. Peak's mission is to support kids to become emotionally mature, compassionate, brave, and hardworking adults. And I'd say they're doing a heck of a job so far. In this episode, we dig into the importance of rites of passage for the growth of our kids, how our children are mirrors of our growth as parents, and why it's crucial to give our children room to be curious to pursue their dreams and find their purpose. Tim Nikolaev & Chris Coggin Podcast Highlights What do you model for your kids with your actions? It's hard to expect your children to behave a certain way if you don't behave like that yourself. Why our kids are a mirror for our growth as parents, and how that can help us be better dads. Building trust with your kids doesn't happen by telling them what to think and feel. It's built by letting them figure out what their dreams are and supporting them in the process. Why passion, joy, dedication, and commitment are crucial in education, and why they're missing in our traditional education setting. Why Tim and Chris refuse to scale Peak Collective and how that helps them stay focused on their mission. When times are good, it's easy to show up as a parent. But it's a hell of a lot tougher to do that when life throws a few curveballs at you. That's why we need to cherish every moment we spend with our loved ones. We're not promised tomorrow, so the best we can do is make today count. Today's guest, Matthew Christiansen, is someone I look up to as a parent and someone I'm honored to call my friend. Matthew is a father of 3, the CEO of the game development studio Mount Verita and the former CEO of Bright Bridge Web. Matthew and his family recently went through one of the most unspeakable tragedies a family can go through: The loss of a child. His son died a month after birth, leaving a hole that can never be replaced. But Matthew still celebrates his son every day. He does that through his relationship with his three other kids, his work, and his relationship with his parents and wife. Everything he does in life is done with love, kindness, and intention, thus honoring the memory of his lost son. Today, we discuss the importance of being intentional with the time you spend with loved ones, how to raise successful, happy, and confident children, and why it's essential to stick to your healthy routines during those dark days. Matthew Christiansen Podcast Highlights Why just 30 minutes of daily focused time with your children can drastically impact your relationship with them. Why it's critical to praise your kids' effort instead of their results. The habits that helped him recover from depression after losing his son. How Matthew built his first business at the age of 16, and scaled it to 20 employees without any outside investment. Why it's important to have brothers that will call you out on your bullshit but will also share your grief when needed. What's it like to live in the shadow of a legendary dad that has changed the lives of millions. As businessmen, we'll put a significant amount of thought into the terms we agree to in our professional lives. But do we do the same with our family agreements? When I look at the challenges I have with my kids, especially with screen time or chores, I've come to realize that it's because the agreement isn't clear. What are the boundaries and consequences for not doing what they agreed to? What's really crazy is that less than an hour before recording this interview, I was having a discussion with my wife about why we don't see eye to eye on certain things. Her response was, "It's because we don't trust each other in those areas." I think she nailed it with that answer. That's why the timing couldn't be any more perfect to have this conversation with Daniel Matalon about agreements and trust. Daniel is a social impact producer, the Founder of #IsThereEnough, and co-founder of Impact Launchpad. The universe is definitely speaking to me right now; I just need to listen. In our conversation, Daniel talks about what it really means to build trust with our family through agreement and understanding. You'll learn how we can give our kids a choice with that trust and that letting them make the wrong choice is okay. We should support them, but also let them know that there are consequences for those decisions. He also talks about how the opposite of agreement is not disagreement, and how the path to avoid conflict is through agreement. And above all, how we can inspire our kids to become who they are, instead of who we think they should be. There are so many takeaways from this chat that I had to stop and let the moment breathe a few times. I hope you'll get a ton of value from this episode and that some of you will bring a few of these topics back to your FRD Bands. Let's keep the conversation going fellas. How trust is built through agreements, especially small ones, because our children want to be trusted and empowered. The opposite of agreement is not disagreement, it's war. And collaboration is a better outcome than winning. As parents or coaches, we should help our kids become who they are, not who we think they should be. Why the things we struggle with always seem to hear their ugly heads, even though we think they're in the past. Why the ultimate answer to #IsThereEnough is, “What are we going to do about it?” Get the Full Show Notes Want access to the full show notes, including links to all resources mentioned during today's conversation? In today's society, we don't teach men to protect themselves and protect their families. But part of being a better Dad and a better husband is being able to take care of your loved ones in every way possible. If you find yourself in a situation where their lives were in danger, would you be able to respond? Let's face it, we're making ourselves easy targets by ignoring violence's role in our lives. Like it or not, it's out there. Understanding it and knowing when and how to use it can make the difference in life-threatening scenarios. Today's guest, Tim Larkin, encourages us to shift our mindset around violence. Tim is the founder of Target Focus Training and has coached over 10,000 people from over 52 countries on using their brains and bodies to prevent, prepare for, and survive unthinkable events. In the first of our two-part conversation, we discuss why hope won't save you in life-threatening situations, the little things you can do today to improve your family's safety, and why understanding violence allows you to have a calmer life. Finally, I've got some exciting news! We've got two important dates to add to your calendars: The Inaugural Live Summit is happening in Austin, Texas on December 2-4th. This is a LIVE EVENT with some great speakers like Hal Elrod, Justin Donald and more! Visit FrontRowDads.com/Live for more details and to book your spot today. Our next Online Summit is happening on July 21, 2022 where we'll be focusing on the Intentional Parenting Pillar. Visit FrontRowDads.com/Summit to book your spot right now. Tim Larkin Podcast Highlights - Part 1 How the goal should be to get to a point where you won't even need to use violence. But it requires work to get there. The more you understand how violence works, the more peaceful your life will be. How you're making yourself vulnerable to attacks and home invasions in ways you're not even aware of. That owning a dog can be a great deterrent for home intruders. Tim's basic checklist you can apply that will dramatically improve the safety of your home and family. I soon became certified as a holistic wellness practitioner, a functional nutrition practitioner and a functional diagnostic practitioner. And so much more. After that, I founded the revolutionary thyroid program, the a method as a health professional and a mom. I fully understand the importance of having a fun, simple, and sustainable plan for achieving a responsive thyroid. So I share actionable and practical strategies for developing a responsive thyroid so that the ambitious moms and women can gain freedom from fatigue and lose the thyroid weight once. Welcome to the thriving thyroid podcast. (01:21): All right, you guys welcome back to the thriving thyroid podcast. I have Dawn with me on the episode, something else anyways, I have with me today and we're about this upcoming summit that she has together and I have the opportunity to speak so welcome, Don. (01:46): Thanks. So Shannon, I'm really excited to be able to chat a bit about summit and all that it has for women. (01:51): Yeah. So give us a little bit of background as to who you're and why you decided to do this summit. (02:00): Yeah, so my background really was a very natural background when I had children. So before that, probably not so much, but it's like the moment. Yeah. Kids suddenly you really, really wanna take care of them even better than you take care of yourself. And so with my first child I, I was really, you know, making all her food and looking at cloth diapers and just wanting to be really holistic with her. And that really opened up a whole new world for me. And from that point on I went into the journey of becoming a doula which originally just started with friends and then ended up being a whole business and teaching more natural style childbirth education classes, and then became a breastfeeding consultants for our area. And I really loved the fact that as I got to know women, I saw them also wanting to do things more naturally, which made me feel like I need to stay ahead of them. (02:54): And so I went I went back to school and I became a homeopath as well, which just was just using natural medication to help families. And so I loved all of that and I loved the whole area, but what ended up happening is of course, as, as my kids got older and I got older, it changed kind of the direction of things because I started to see more in the end of mental health and women who are burning out and women who are struggling just to be moms and transitioning from, you know, a working mom to a, a stay at home mom or a stay at home mom to a going back to work mom and all of these areas. And so I guess what really propelled this summit is I did a summit in February that was specifically on mindset and mental health and making sure that you're living your best life and that it's okay to take care of yourself. (03:42): And it's not a bad thing to decide to pull back and be more gentle and take time and, and all of that. And from that summit, I started to hear a lot from women on the health issues that they were dealing with, which often was coming out of stress and overwork and burnout, and even just life transition. And so I thought that is my next summit. I am definitely going to step into a summit. That's gonna talk about women's health physically, mentally, emotionally in a more natural sense. And so I started to put this one together and I'm really, really super excited about it because I feel like it has something for every woman up there. (04:18): Well, and I, so several things, I was the exact same way. I clothed my first two kids. And then they came out with honest company and I was like, I'm going back to you once you kinda hit a certain point. I'm like the amount of laundry that I have. But that was honestly what started me in my journey as well, was my kids. Right. I was doing it for my kids. I wanted to understand these dyes and food and all of these wonderful things. And so I love that part. And then the second part is I feel like, and maybe you can speak into this a little bit. And, and maybe you haven't seen it. I don't know, but I feel like with COVID, a lot of the women have hit more burnout. Mm-Hmm right. They they've got a career, they've got a job, they have kids, they have a house they have, you know, and then they're locked inside their homes and, and all, all of that has just taken a toll on us mentally and emotionally and the stress and the burnout and all of that. So (05:32): Yeah, you totally, totally agree with you. I think, especially like you had women who maybe were, stay at home moms, but suddenly had then stay at home children homeschooling whether they wanted it or not. Right. Or we had women who were working part from home and doing that you know, and just, it was just such a, a forced transition and really not much time to make that transition. Yeah. And I think even for the whole family, right? Like all of a sudden we saw kids having mental health issues, emotional issues that they didn't have pre and moms trying their best to cope with that. And you cannot be a psychologist and a mom, you know what I mean? Like we already have enough roles. Yeah. So I feel like it just, everything that could have come up came up and I think for women, we're still in the transition, we're still re not even, I wouldn't even say recovering. I feel like we're still in it because we're still too close. Right. Mm-hmm so we're still in it. And we're maybe only now recognizing I need some help. Like I need to actually look at me. (06:36): Yes. Yeah. I, I love that. We're still, we're still in recovery and my husband and I joke we're like people have gotten stupid since COVID and , (06:50): And we we're speaking to ourselves, but it's like, some of that common sense I feel like has kind of gone away, but more so, because we're still in the stress, we're still in the fight or flight. There's still things every single week that is happening and changing and people are, you know, and at least for us, we're like, it's just important to have a lot of compassion because you don't know what someone is going through. And I have a really good friend right now that is going through some things. And I was like, I had no idea. I have no clue that this was happening behind the scenes. And she held it so well for so long. And so anyways, it's just been a reminder to me that it's important to have grace with people. So go ahead. (07:51): I was gonna say too, the other thing too, I think that's happening. And part of the reason why I think this summit is in a really good space is as women are, are, you know, going through all this transition the last couple years, we're also on social media, way more, and we're taking in way more. And that also means that we're getting ads thrown at, thrown at us of what we should be doing, how we should be doing it. What's right. What's wrong. What the problem is with us, whether it's our, you know, our weight our, you know, our ability to do enough work, our ability to be successful, whatever it is, we've been so bombarded with that in a way that even if you, you know, were into social media in the past, you weren't locked in the way that you were in the last couple years. (08:31): Like it was a form of escape too, but we were also getting all of this pressure to be, you know, the best person and, you know, the COVID 30, like we heard of all these things during that time. And I think that's part of what I would like to demystify as we go through this summit is, Hey, Hey, let's actually look at life in reality and what you can actually manage and what let's make it simple. You know, it's okay for you not to be a twig. It's okay for you not to starve yourself. It's okay for you not to be on an exercise and diet roller coaster. It's okay for you to have emotions and to have, you know, PMs and to you know, have gut issues. And these are all things that can happen now. How do we make you healthier in a way that doesn't drive you crazy or feel like something else is getting put on your plate. Yeah. And so I think that needs to happen to pull back from all that stuff we've been inundated with. And at the same time kind of give us a sense of relief. Like, oh my goodness, okay, I'm not doing it all wrong. and, and this is some of this is normal. (09:37): I, I think that's so good for so many reasons. And I think that would kind of hit on what my first question was, is, and, and maybe you wanna add to this is who is this summit for? Like, as a listener? How do you know if this is for you or not? (09:54): Yeah, I think like truly, honestly, I think it doesn't matter your age as far as being a woman or the time of life. Like we really are covering all the ages and stages. The only thing we're not covering is we're not covering pregnancy and fertility. So if that is like your absolute biggest passion, and that's all you wanna hear about, that's probably not for you then, but otherwise you're in. And I think the, the cool part about this is, you know, whether you are, have a, like a young family, no family you have that premenopausal stage you're in menopause. This will cover all of those things because it's really about areas to improve the life and the health overall of women. Not just like you specifically have to have these things in order to, to enjoy and participate in this. So I think that's the fun part about it is that there's so much information for everybody. (10:44): And yet it's, I keep saying this, but it's not information that you're gonna feel like, oh my goodness, I've gotta do all these new things now. Like it's information that you're gonna be like, oh, I'm already doing some of this, but I didn't know this. So I actually could tweak what I'm doing. And I think that's the nice part is it's not about being overwhelmed. It's about just taking what you're doing now and probably even simplifying what you're doing now and giving you that sense of, oh, okay. I can kind of let go of some things and I don't really need to make massive changes. I just need to do what I'm doing now. A little more efficient, efficiently. Really. (11:17): Yeah. Yeah. And we already recorded my episode and I know we kind of briefly talked about on that episode, how it it's the small adjustments, right. It's the small tweaks that make this big change. I think I've talked about this before on the podcast, the, the compound effect, or I know. Yeah. I feel like that was a really popular book a couple years ago. But, and, and now the atomic habits book is coming out and it's, it's about stacking your habits. It's about these small, simple things that just add up to this big lifestyle change. And then before, you know, it it's like, oh, this is my life is totally different than it was six months ago or a year ago. (12:05): So. Right. Right. (12:10): The only thing I was gonna say is the thing about it is if you're only making simple changes, right. It doesn't feel like like impossible to do. And I think every single speaker it's so nice, cuz they've all been you know, these things are great. This is something you might wanna add. This is something, if you didn't know about it now you know about it. Right. And you can kind of choose what you wanna do with that. And it might be something that, okay, this month I actually am gonna do these things cuz they're easy, but down the road, this is what I want my big picture to look like. And so it, it gives you both ends of that. And I think that's really, really awesome. (12:45): Yeah. So what is this summit about? What are some of the topics that you're covering? (12:52): Yeah, so it's five days. It's totally free. I just wanna say that before we keep going on. So people know it runs from June 20th to 24th and the registration will be open on the 6th of June. And it covers everything from thyroid to P C O S. So I would say those are the two more specific topics. Then it talks about like reducing our PMs naturally. We are talking about weight loss in all different ways. So things like how your gut health can help your metabolism and how weight loss is not always about the food you eat. And so it's, it's interesting. It's not just like here, here's your 1200 calorie diet and that's what you need to do. And then we're talking about exercise. We're talking about strength training for women and why it's important. Why is that valuable for us as women? Because a lot of women steer clear of anything that has to do with weights. (13:39): We're talking about walking and the benefits of walking for your posture, for your confidence and for your health. So again, not often something that we talk about that just walking is an awesome option for you and it's way less stressful on your body. And we're also gonna talk lots about different types of nutrition. We have a great episode on sleep, which I know many women have requested. So I think that'll be awesome. And we have someone food psychology, which is gonna give some super valuable information. I think that'll be so much fun. So many people will be kind of blown away by some of the stuff that comes up there. And we're also gonna cover some meditation and mindfulness because we need to know it's okay to, to sit down and actually take the time to take care of us. And that's part of that. So (14:23): Yes, and lots more too. I, I think that that's an area that I was just talking to my husband about last night. I was like, I need to meditate and be more mindful. And I was like, I have all of the resistance in the world towards this. And so that's currently the book that I'm reading is I think it's called how to train your mind, but it a big focus on that is the meditation. And I don't wanna do it, but I know I need to. So , (14:55): I think for a lot of women, like any of these areas, right? Whether it's exercise, whether it's eating, whether it's meditation and mindfulness or like you could, you choose often we're very all or nothing. Right? So it's like, we've gotta be all in. I'm gonna meditate half an hour a day and I'm gonna do it like sitting on my bed in complete silence and the children are gonna be tucked away somewhere else in privacy and you know, whatever it is, we have this thing in our mind of what the perfect scenario is. And if we're not gonna achieve that, we just don't even start. And I think for, for all of us, it's good to remember that, you know, if you wanna do two minutes and it's, you know, while you're in the shower, because the kids aren't quiet today and that's your only space to do that, then that's enough. Right. So sometimes it's just reminding ourselves too, that doing the little consistent actions is better than, you know, wanting the big action, but never really getting to it or getting to it once a week or whatever. (15:47): Yeah. Yeah. So good. So what is the best way to take all of this information in and (15:55): Yeah. Yeah. So summits are awesome because you get everything in one place in a short amount of time, but it can also be really super overwhelming. We probably have between three and five speakers a day so that, you know, they're 20 to 30 minutes each. So there's a couple things you can do. The one thing that I, I have been saying is anytime you go to any summit, know what you're going in, wanting to get. So if your area that you are really focused on is a specific area of your health, this is an area that you know, that you would like to improve, you know, soon then go in and take a look at what are the speakers today that are covering something on that specific thing and watch them only. So that way you're not feeling like I have to watch everything. (16:35): And often again, what we do is if we didn't catch everybody the first day, we just don't show up the rest of the days. And that, that doesn't make any sense. It's better just to take in what you need right now and get what you want for today and then move on to the next day. So that's one way you can do it and just really be focused on what you want. And it's a great idea just to have a pen and paper so that when you are listening, you can quick draw it down. Like one thing, even from each speaker that really stands out to you. So if they say something that you think that I want to implement, just put one thing down, because again, you're not gonna do 15 things. Yeah. So you'll make it manageable. And then the other option too, is we always offer VIP passes, which is just lifetime access to all of the videos. (17:14): So if you really feel like this is an area that's important to me, I wanna see it all. I wanna take it in. I wanna do it whenever I want. I wanna be able to go back to it, then you have an option to purchase a VIP pass. And if you don't wanna purchase that, then you can just watch them as they come out each day. And they're up for you for 24 hours for free. So you can do it either way, but you definitely wanna go in kind of knowing what is your most important area of focus so that you can feel like, okay, I got what I wanted to really know about in, in that process of the five days. (17:44): I, I love that for a lot of reasons. One, because I'm the person, okay. Here's a really poor actually, it's a really good example, but it's embarrassing. so her birthday fell on the 29th, December 29th. And in February, there was not a 29 day. So I was like, do I take the picture before? Do I take it after? And I overthought it for way too long. And I ended up not taking the picture because I did not know when to do the stupid picture. And so it was the same thing and all, or nothing mindset where it has to be on the day at the right time. And now I missed on that opportunity forever because I didn't just take the stupid picture, like a day early, a day, late two days late, it doesn't matter. It was a picture, you know? Yeah. And that's embarrassing to admit, but I think a lot of women have, yeah, similar thoughts. (18:50): If I can't do all of this, then I'm just gonna do none of it. It, and so we, we sign up, we get started, we have the best of intentions. Kids are crazy, summer's happening. And then it's like, I'm just not gonna do that. Or I just can't do all of them and therefore I'm not gonna benefit. And so I love that you said, know what you're going in for and focus on what you feel like you need the most, or invest the extra little bit of money and pay for the VIP pass and just go all in and, and watch it and commit to yourself that you're gonna watch it while you're folding laundry or, you know, doing dishes or something like that. (19:33): Exactly. yeah. I think we're, we're, we're far too hard on ourselves and we do get into that perfection and mindset. And the reality is we, we are the ones who lose out. So mm-hmm , if you wanna take care of your health, pick an area and just focus on that and do what you can and then have grace for yourself and say, I, you know, I got something, I learned something today. I wouldn't have learned if I wasn't here. Yeah. Right. That's really all we need to do. (19:57): Yes. Yeah. So good. Okay. So how do you get into natural health? Like if you are wanting to get started, how do you, how do you do that? Where do you start? (20:10): Yeah, that's a big question. I mean, I think it depends again, like you and I, it was because of our kids. Right. So like, is it for you? Is it for your family? Who is it that you're wanting to make those changes for and why? So I think, again, you have to kinda ask yourself some questions before you figure that out. I know for, for our family, it was really the idea of, we wanted to have a really vibrant life, no matter how old we get. And I think the older I get, the more, I think that is I wanna be traveling. I wanna be, be able to go out and, and move around and have a walk and even see my great grandkids and be able to play with them. Right. I don't want to feel like I'm not mobile. I'm in a lot of pain. (20:49): I feel like I can't do so many things that I would like to be doing as my life gets older. And at the same time, I want to have that for my children. I wanna be able to start that in them and let them enjoy that and then continue that in their own life because it's just normal for them. And so I think you, you need to decide what it is that you, you want it for. And then really, again, the Summit's a great place to start because you can literally hear some of the things that you can do naturally, whether it's reducing your toxins, whether it's the food that you choose to eat whether it's using essential oils, whether it's the meditation and mindfulness part of it, and you can then decide, okay, what, what is the thing I actually can do right now? What, what seems most valuable to me right now? What can I actually, you know, put in my life right now and then start there because there's lots of places you can go from there. And just finding one is a, a great place to, you know, kind of dip your toes in and, and get into it. And then doing something is always gonna be better than doing nothing. And again, if you try to be perfect and do every area, then nothing really happens well. So picking one is probably the easiest. (21:56): Yes. Well, and I love that's. One of the things that I love about summits is there's a lot of different topics and you're exposed to a lot of different things and you can kind of pick and choose, you know, I remember going through phases where I was really interested in herbal medicine. And then I, I already had essential oils, but because I understood herbal herbs herbology and things like that, then I was like, oh, these, these, these essential oils are so cool. And then , and then, because I understood essential oils and I understood herbs, and I was like, well, duh, homeopathy. Right? Like, and started learning more about that. And, and it kind of built for me because little by little, so the, the benefit in my opinion of having a summit is you can, like you said, kind of start with where you're at and maybe you really resonate with a talk or a discussion or a person. And, and you're like, I want to learn more about that for me right now. (23:06): So, yeah. Yeah. And some of it is even just nice when you see a certain speaker or you hear them and you think, you know, what, what they're saying really does resonate. Like you said, with me just following them, right. Mm-Hmm, signing up for their newsletter, following them on whatever social media and just really sticking with that for a little while so that you can have a little more comprehensive knowledge of, okay, this is what it's really about. This is what it means to do this. This is how it works in a life. This is how you fit it in, this is what I would be, you know, looking at. So you can, it it's. I just think it's great, cuz you can literally watch things now before you adapt and it makes it so much simpler to decide, yeah, this is for me or it's not. (23:43): Yeah. I remember it kind of that kind of when I was struggling and I, I kind of felt like I was drowning in life and I was like, I don't even know. I don't even know what to do. I don't know what to focus on. I just, my anxiety was kind of taking over a lot of my life and I was overthinking a lot of things. I remember following someone on social media and it was something that I grew up doing. And so it was an easy adaptation, but she had talked about setting a timer and just getting as much done in that 10 minute timer or 15 minute timer. And I started reimplementing that because it was familiar, but I had kind of forgotten and I was like, this is amazing. And that sparked a lot more productivity in my life. And a lot more, I was able to reduce my overwhelm, which allowed me to progress in other areas because I had a clean space. (24:45): And, and so sometimes it's just those, those little things that yeah, and that you learned by fol and I had followed this person for, I don't know, over a year. And then she shared that tip one day and I was like, yes, I am going to do that. So I think that's also really important. So let's transition to essential oils. What do you suggest for essential oils for those busy moms? How can we incorporate that into our life? I was looking for my roller bottles and I think somebody has run off cuz I normally keep 'em on my desk. but (25:24): Yeah. And I think that's, that's the great part about essential oils, right? Is that kids are very compliant with them. It's not like trying to put medicine down their throat or, you know, make them do something that is laborous or that they have to stop for a long time to get it done. Like it's just, it's quick. It's easy. It smells good. I remember from the moment we introduced them, both my girls were like, I want my own, like it was like their own personal perfume kind of thing. Like they want their own. So it it's simple to it to adopt. I think that that's the nice part, but for, for moms specifically and, and women really, I think some of the nice things about essential oils is there's something that can help support you, whether it's your mood or your emotions and starting off your day. (26:08): And that's part of like my morning routine really does use essential oils because I know if it's a busy day, I'm gonna need something to calm me down and something to help me feel motivated and stick it through. And so, you know, I have my favorites for that. And then if I know the kids have certain things, they have to do my happen to do online schooling. I know a couple of 'em have exams a certain day. So guess what, we're gonna put the diffuser out and we're gonna use some focus oils and we're gonna really make it so that they are able to sit there and get through it and not feel overwhelmed and upset as the questions are coming in. So I think for, for moms in general, it's just such a simple way to manage your household both emotionally and physically, when stuff comes up on a day to day basis, that you can really feel empowered. Like I'm, I'm capable of handling the little things so that stuff doesn't get out of control. And I think that's where most, most women can start is just what do you need most in your family, whether it's stuff for physical health or for emotions or mental or whatever else. (27:08): Yeah. Well, and I, I love that you talk about that because, or at least the focus part, well, two different things. So for me, I love adaptive. That's like my favorite oil mm-hmm , it smells super good. It smells like perfume. I'm not putting on the toxic chemicals. Right. And because I am nursing, my body odors have changed a little bit and so , but I also have a little one smelling me all day, so I didn't want those chemicals around her obviously. And then the second part, when it comes to focus and using essential oils, there is a great way for people to help train their brain. So certain smells you'll have certain memories and things like that. Yep. And when my, so I really got into essential oils when my husband was going to school and I started giving him some focus, blends, and he would put it on his jacket and he would smell it before he studied. (28:14): And then he would again, put it on his jacket and kind of while he's taking the test, like smelling his wrist and he, his test scores went up. So I, you know, I just, I have a deep left for all of those things and it's an easy way to incorporate those things in. And especially since I work with a lot of women with brain fog, mm-hmm, , this might be, you know, a great way to, to incorporate some of those in for, for you ladies that need to yeah. Do well with recalling things. So tell us what are some of your favorite essential oils? (28:55): Yeah, so, absolutely anything that helps with hormones. I have to tell you is probably some of my go-tos, so things like stage calm. There's some blends that I like that are specific to a certain company. So I like whisper. Dium is one of my again, I don't like the smell actually of Jura unless it's mixed with other oils, but it does so well for just my mood and keeping me stable in certain times of the month. So I love that. And then other ones that are absolutely top of my list are sleep oils. So things like that are Woody like V and cedarwood Roman camomile. Any of those are probably again the top of my list, because if I'm not sleeping well, I'm not functioning in any capacity. Well, so I really do prioritize that. Yeah. And then the other thing I love is for is really for the kids. (29:46): So there's just oils where I know everywhere we go, they're in my purse, like there's multiple lavenders, there's multiple tea trees. There's multiple peppermints because they help with aches and they help with, you know, just helping keep everybody calm and they help if we're, you know, traveling very far in a car, they help. There's, you know, a couple digestive oils. I like if they have tummy upset. So there's just certain oils where they're my go to, they're always on me. They're probably everywhere, you know, one of my purses, one to my desk, one, the kitchen, one in the car. But yeah, it's just things that, that have become staples in our home and it's yeah. I just, I can't imagine living, living life without it, at this point, because it does so much for all of us. (30:32): Yeah. Well, and I, I love that you talk about carrying them with you. I actually, and I've had a few friends recently ask me where I got this, but it's like this little black thing and it fits all of the roller bottles in it. And I carry that in my diaper bag all the time. I carry a lot of Frank Ince and I carry a lot of he charm with me because I was in a rollover car accident at 12 years old mm-hmm and I flew out of the car and landed in a Barb wire fence. So I was covered in (31:09): Wow. (31:11): Scrapes from head to toe going through the glass landing in a Barb wire fence, like the whole thing. And so I just, thankfully I haven't had to use them for anything that drastic yet, but I'm like if my kids or myself or we come upon an accident, I would want to have something to help stop mm-hmm the bleeding you know, thankfully I didn't need a blood transfusion or anything like that, but you know, just having some of those things as a first line of defense, I think is just so important for me. And it, it calms my, my mind down knowing that I may not be able to prevent some of these things, but I know what to do if these things were to happen or to come about. So (32:02): Yeah. Yeah. Super. I know there's a mom just recently that was really struggling with her kids just through immune systems and they were always home from school and daycare. And she's trying to work at home. And so it was really limiting her ability to get things done. And I thought, you know, this is something where it's, it's such a simple fix. And we talked about options that she could use with essential oils. And I was just chatting with her. I think it was last week that she said to me, so the first time that I've had two weeks where none of my kids have been home and I've gotten work done just to support their immune systems. And so it's things like that, right. That as women, sometimes we just need something to be able to manage life in a way that doesn't throw us off all the time. And we're not behind the eight ball or running behind trying to catch up because things go, things go off when you have kids, they just do. It's how it is. Yeah. And so again, like it's so supportive and I think it's a simple, simple option to have at hand. (32:58): Yeah. Yeah, absolutely. This has been a fantastic conversation, Don, and I really hope that people sign up for the summit and go check it out. It's free. You can pay to upgrade. Obviously I'm a fan. I wouldn't be, I wouldn't be doing these things if I, if I didn't believe in the cause and the purpose for bringing this information to people, especially in, in a way that is free, right? Like you're just investing your time. And I know as a busy mom, I am, I have to do laundry. I have to do the dishes. I have to sit down and nurse a baby and I can either choose to binge watch TV shows or something like that, but really just investing in yourself in these times, I think is super important. So what are, is there anything that you would like to share in closing? (34:01): I think just bottom line, take the time and gift it to yourself. Like there is never going to be a better time in life for you to actually care for yourself than right now. Like life will continue going on. Things will go by, nothing will change if you don't choose to make some differences and grow in some area. So if you're willing to put a bit of time into yourself so that you can grow and really have a more vibrant, more, more fulfilled life, then choose that, choose that over other things. And so I hope that you would choose to register and take in whatever you could manage of the summit and be a part of this because it's not only amazing information, but it's an amazing community of women that will be there all looking for similar things. And so it gives you a community as well. (34:45): Yeah. Yeah. I love that. Oh, I'm so excited. I'm so excited for this to air. And I'm so excited for the, the summit to go live and, and all of these things for women. So thank you Don, for organizing this and also coming on and talking to everybody about what you're doing and your passion and the reason why you're doing these things. So thank you so much. (35:11): Thank you, Shannon, for the opportunity to chat about it. (35:13): Yeah. I'll see you on the next bye (35:19): Way before, before you go, please subscribe. There are few things in life that can test a dad's patience more than putting the kids to bed with a screaming baby in your arms while their rambunctious siblings are doing everything but trying to go to sleep. Everyone has their breaking point and the urge to yell at your kids can be overwhelming. On a good day, you realize that you don't want to become the scary monster in their bedroom before unloading on them. So what do you do when you're at your wit's end during the bedtime routine? Today, we're talking about what happens when we get angry with our kids, being rejected when asking for forgiveness, and what to do when "I'm sorry" isn't enough. My guest today is Curt Storring. Curt is a husband, father, entrepreneur, and a successful men's group facilitator. After struggling with anger issues and depression in his first few years of fatherhood, he knew that something had to change if he wanted to become a better father to his kids and a better human being. This led him to create his Dad.Work group and podcast with a mission to hurt less and love more. Even though Curt has put in the work, the reality is the work doesn't end. There's always another test or challenge on the horizon as a father. I asked Curt to share a couple of stories from some of his recent blowups with his kids, and I can't tell you how much I appreciated his willingness to be vulnerable and to share his breakthroughs. Sometimes we just need to hear that we're not alone, especially when we're in those dark places. All right fellas, let's dig in. Enjoy this conversation and let's continue the journey and evolve to become better fathers and husbands to our family. One last thing, our next Online Summit is coming up on May 19th and we're going to be focusing on some of the topics we discussed in this episode. We have some great guest speakers lined up to help with some actionable strategies and ideas that you can implement right away to be a better father and husband. We'd love to have you. Click here to sign up and join us. Curt Storring Podcast Highlights Is there anything that could break a man's heart more than their child rejecting them when asking for a hug? How to understand the triggers and patterns that cause us to become triggered. Why wishing for an apology from our own parents in adulthood is wasted energy, and how we're better off by letting go and moving on. No matter how much we feel that we're failing as a father, kids need their father to be a part of their life so don't ever give up. Why saying that you're sorry doesn't always work if you're just saying the words. A real apology is more than words. 222: Behind The Scenes of the Expand Online Summit for Music Educators

Let's go behind the scenes of the Expand Online Summit! This is the third year that I am running the summit and be sure to go to expandonlinesummit.com and get yourself a free ticket which gives you access to the sessions for 48 hours. There is also the option to purchase extended access through April 30, 2023 right after you register. My first task was to figure out how this summit is going to be different from last year's summit and from the summit before that. It came down to the state of the world. When I did the first summit, it was 2020 and I had started sending out invites before the pandemic. But I recorded the very first session when my kids were already home because school had closed down. We were in a state of uncertainty and closures and unknowns. The sentiment of that summit was “you can do something online and be successful and you can do something to sustain yourself through the uncertainty that is coming.” Last year, I really wanted to focus on doing better and putting down roots online so we weren't feeling like a fly-by-night operation anymore. We were really saying yes to online For this year, I realized that the people who wanted to come to the summit this year have said yes to expanding online. It's not a matter of if they're expanding, but how they're expanding. And so I put the theme together of scaling beyond sessions. What can we do beyond flipping on the Webcam and getting out in front of the computer screen and teaching a lesson through videoconferencing. We gotta do better than that! It's 2022, the Internet has gotten faster, the tools have become more robust and so on and so on. S Next for this year was sponsorship opportunities. My summit is extremely focused; it is geared 100% towards music educators and I know that there are some amazing companies out there that cater to music education and helping music educators to do more, bigger, better, faster. I created some really great sponsorship packages which yielded four incredible sponsors. Muzie.Live (Sam Reti) The SpeakEasy Cooperative (Michelle Markwart Deveaux) Duet Partner (Neylan McBaine) The Cascade Method (Tara Boykin) Their sessions are not to be missed and the cool thing is that two of these sponsors signed up as sponsors after we had recorded their sessions. They said, you know what, I'm fully invested in this summit. I want to be a part of it, I want to promote it, I want to sponsor it and kind of just have a ringing endorsement. One of the reasons I felt it was important to bring sponsors this year was to add a little bit more authority to the event. I want the Expand Online Summit to continue going on for years and years to come. I want to make it into the premier event for online music educators. That is my goal, that is where I want to take it and I feel like we are getting there now that we're in year three and we have solid sponsors and we've got great registration and all of that stuff, Inviting Speakers My first step this year was to look at the amazing folks who spoke on the summit previously. I then reached out to some of them and invited them back. Once I had my “yeses” I looked at the topics we were going to be able to cover and identified holes that I wanted to fill within the theme of scaling beyond sessions. Then I reached out through Instagram and email with the ask. The best part is that some of the people that said yes to attend have never done summits before. They have great products, great services for music educators, but they just haven't played in this arena and I feel so privileged and honored that they said yes to participating in something that is so new and so different from anything that they've done before. Recording and Producing the Summit Content I recorded most of the sessions on Zencastr. A couple were recorded on zoom. Then I use Camtasia to edit and Vimeo to host. This is what takes the longest – from here I also pull together session highlights which I use to create the playbook (more on that later!) I keep track of everything in a Google Spreadsheet although I actually prefer using Airtable, I just didn't get organized with it this year. Summit Buildout and Testing The speakers provided free gifts for the attendees (with email signup) and/or discounts/offers/coupons for the All-Access Pass holders. It is my responsibility to make sure that the links they provide work and do what they are supposed to. This takes time but I need to make sure that whatever link someone provides me works and it delivers the content that they said, it's going to deliver and that that experience is on par with everything that I am putting together in the summit. It doesn't make me look good or make the attendees feel good or the speakers if I put a wrong link in or if things don't work smoothly. It is on me! One of the discounts inside the All-Access Pass is 10% (that's $600) off the Online Music Course Accelerator program that I run with Brocha Kahan. The All-Access Pass is as low as $67 and will go up to $297, so if that's the only offer you take, you're still ahead $303 :) The total value of the All-Access Pass is over $3600! Now onto the tech stack… WordPress website Deadline Funnels ThriveCart Learndash Gravity Forms ActiveCampaign Tidio Beaver Builder / Beaver Themer That's a lot but I'll tell you that it was SO MUCH EASIER this year, because I already had so much in place and ready to use from last year… Especially the emails that I needed to write for my automations and swipe copy for the speakers to promote the summit. Most of it just went so smooth. I didn't have to do that much and I am so thankful. I mean obviously there's still a ton of work but I didn't have to write a ton of copy from scratch. I feel strongly that that is the reason why this year's summit is going to be even more successful because I didn't have to focus on those little details. I just had to go and plug and play and do the work, which is actually probably one of the reasons why I was so excited to record this episode for you! Gamification and Engagement The final elements of the summit that I feel is crucial to share about are the BINGO board and the Playbook. The BINGO card makes it fun to show up and attend/participate in the summit. There are pre-recorded and live elements and the BINGO board is helping people get into it. And the Playbook is all about making the most of the content. I say this in several of the sessions – the summit is not for entertainment purposes alone, it's a motivation, inspiration, education tool. The Playbook helps to take the ideas from the sessions and make them real and tangible. I am working to make the Expand Online Summit the premier event for music educators who are expanding online, creating online products and services. This summit is part of the launch strategy for the 2nd round of the online music course accelerator which is starting later this month. If you are interested in creating an online course and you want strategy support, camaraderie and hands on assistance making that happen, the online music course accelerator is absolutely for you. There's so much opportunity for music teachers to double down on what you're creating online. I wish you all the best, look forward to seeing you at the summit and connecting with you to see if OMCA is right for you and with that. Hey, here's my Instagram – send me a DM, okay?
