Pavel Prigozhin , the son and heir of the late Wagner Group founder, apparently has South Africa on his radar. In this interview with BizNews, SA-Russia expert Professor Irina Filatova says “he's particularly interested in the political side of the affairs…the elections in South Africa, in Namibia, in Mozambique and Botswana.” And using private networks to manipulate social networks and influence public opinion is something his late father Yevgeney used to great effect in Africa. “So there's no doubt that if Wagner's companies, whether it is troll companies or military assistance or whatever, act in South Africa or Southern Africa, they would act in the interests of private interests of the company itself, and of course they would act in the interests of Russia. And many people think that interests of Russia are the same interests as South African interests,” Professor Filatova says. She points out that in almost every coup in West Africa, “there was somebody who was involved in that coup, who started in Russia or in the USSR…was close to the Russian interests”. Meanwhile, Prigozhin Snr has gone from “traitor” to “hero” in Russia, and is being “venerated” again after his failed coup there. Professor Filatova describes his rise to power from hotdog salesman to military strongman; dissects the secret of his success in Africa; and gives an update on current Russia-backed private military operations on the Continent where Western influence is waning fast.

Yevgeny Simkin is a contributor at The Bulwark and co-founder of Samizdat Online.During the Soviet Union, samizdat was the grassroots practice of evading censorship by reproducing banned publications, often by hand. Samizdat Online is the digital incarnation of this practice, publishing articles from an array of outlets while bypassing firewalls and protecting readers' anonymity to bring truth to people living under authoritarian rule. Samizdat's only requirement for publishing articles is that they come from an outlet that has been banned by an autocratic leader. This interview includes two separate conversations, held weeks apart, that I have stitched together as one episode. In the first, we discuss his life growing up in Russia and the antisemitism he faced there, how he cut his teeth at CBS and the erosion of public trust in the media since the days of Edward R. Murrow, how Russia's invasion of Ukraine has affected his Ukrainian and Russian employees, the state of life in rural Russia today, the playful flexibility of Russian grammar and why he thinks poetry is more beautiful in Russian than in English, the ethos of pre-Soviet folktales and where Russia went wrong as a nation, the rise of Putin and the bedrock importance of free speech in the media, and Samizdat Online's efforts in Russia, Iran, China, and beyond. In the second half, we discuss the events of October 7, Osama bin Laden's reputation repair on TikTok, antisemitism in the United States, David Hirsh's thoughts on the banality of evil, and a few exciting updates for Samizdat Online. Over the last year, many countries in the Sahel region have moved away from their former security partners in the west. And Mali, which is struggling to contain secessionists and Islamist militants, has turned to Wagner to bolster their security. Russia's state news agency Tass reported that the country's most famous mercenary, Yevgeny Prigozhin, was on the passenger list for a flight that crashed on its way from Moscow to St. Petersburg on Wednesday, killing all ten people on board. Despite being on the passenger list, it's not clear Prigozhin was on the flight. As head of the Wagner Group, Prigozhin led an unsuccessful mutiny against the Russian military in June. He quickly stood down and struck a deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin that would see him exiled to neighboring Belarus. That exile never came and questions swirled about what punishment, if any, Prigozhin would face for crossing Putin. NPR's Mary Louise Kelly speaks with Nina Khrushcheva. She is a professor of international affairs at The New School in New York City, and she's also the great-granddaughter of former Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev. Episode 20 – How to Break Free from Social Media's Outrage Cycle – Yevgeny Simkin Yevgeny Simkin discusses the damaging effects of social media and the need for structural changes in the media landscape. He argues that while social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter can be harmful, there are other social media platforms like Stack Overflow and LinkedIn that are beneficial because they incentivize positive behavior and focus on reputation. Simkin suggests that social media platforms can be modified to encourage civil discourse and kindness by changing their incentive structures. He also emphasizes the importance of finding alternative monetization schemes for news media that do not rely on clickbait and sensationalism. Simkin believes that the media's focus on outrage and division is misleading and that people are not as divided as they seem. He calls for more compassionate and tolerant conversations to bridge the minor differences that are blown out of proportion. Simkin also discusses the need for a unifying external threat to bring people together and the importance of hope and kindness in society.About The Guest:Yevgeny Simkin is a journalist, technologist, and media expert. He has written extensively about the detrimental effects of sensationalism, clickbait, and divisive content in modern media. Simkin is also the founder of Samizdat Online, an anti-censorship platform that defies autocratic regimes and gives voice to the silenced.Support the showShow Notes:https://outrageoverload.net/ Follow me, David Beckemeyer, on Twitter @mrblog. Where is Yevgeny Prigozhin? In a country where simply expressing public dissent can land you in serious trouble, the Russian warlord who just weeks ago marched thousands of fighters toward Moscow is now, apparently, free to roam the country. Also, in the last decade or so, Egypt has gone from military dictatorship to revolution, from fledgling democracy and then back to military dictatorship. And the Spanish military this week used a well-known Michael Jackson song during an awards ceremony and sparked some controversy. It was another reminder to pay attention to the lyrics before you use popular music in an official capacity.

Yevgeny Prigozhin is now (in)famous around the world for mounting a failed mutiny against the Russian military in a last-ditch attempt to avoid being absorbed into it, as the Kremlin reclaims its monopoly on violence and ends an experiment with outsourcing bits of the Ukraine invasion to mercenaries. The Naked Pravda has focused numerous times before on Wagner Group, and it's now time to write the private military company's obituary. Or is it? How did Prigozhin manage to convince his men to embark on this misadventure? What did we learn about the Russian political elite in this crisis? And what should we expect in Belarus, where at least some remnant of Wagner Group is said to be headed? For insights into the failed insurrection and its aftermath, Meduza turns to three experts.
