The latest tariffs imposed by the Trump administration have raised lots of concerns about prices and the general economy. Why those concerns are not shared by one border town mayor. Plus, a beloved sketch comedian from the '90s wrestles with modernity.
Point Roberts, Washington, faces economic challenges as a U.S. exclave dependent on Canadian visitors. Tariffs from trade disputes have strained local businesses, leading to concerns about the town's survival. The five-square-mile area experiences decreased Canadian tourism, affecting commerce and prompting reports of harassment linked to nationality. Community leaders emphasize the need for elected officials to recognize their struggles. The Point Roberts International Marketplace notes a 30% sales decline, while real estate cancellations worsen economic conditions. Residents face difficulties accessing essential goods due to customs restrictions, and the local government seeks support to navigate these complex issues. Community leaders advocate for engagement from both Canadian and U.S. officials to stabilize the situation.Learn more on this news visit us at: https://greyjournal.net/news/ Hosted on Acast. When Veronica suffered a life-threatening bowel obstruction, she was told she had just hours to reach the specialist care she needed to save her life. From the outside, Veronica Croser appears to be a fit and active young Mum with a passion for adventure. If you met her on one of the many remote hiking trails she enjoys exploring, you probably wouldn't be surprised that this active rural woman also volunteers as a local firefighter for her SA community of Bordertown. But what might surprise you is what's been happening INSIDE Veronica Croser. This dynamic rural woman has spent a lifetime dealing with the often debilitating and almost always painful effects of Inflammatory Bowel Disease and it's even more complex cousin, Chrones disease. Yet against all odds – and in much the same way she has successfully tackled some of Australia's most remote bushland tracks and mountain walks - Veronica has tackled her ill-health with an incredible combination of inner strength, self-determination and incredible courage. Veronica Croser is living proof that you can't always judge a book by its cover. ***Thanks so much for listening to this episode of the Flying Doctor Podcast. With Trump heading back to the White House, it has many Quebec border towns worried about the possible influx of migrants crossing the border. Canada saw a spike in people trying to enter at the U.S. border following Trump's election in 2016. One border town mayor says she's worried about her community becoming known as a crossing point. Caroline Rossetti, the Mayor of Saint-Armand, which borders the state of Vermont, spoke to Andrew Carter.

C.S. Giscombe—known to his friends as Cecil--talks with long-time friend Roxi Power about the second half of his newest poetry book, Negro Mountain) (University of Chicago Press) which was recommended by a New York Times critic as one of the 5 best poetry books of 2023. In the second part of our interview, Giscombe dives deep into the book's central concepts, such as “negro luck” and the “the long story of evil” through totemic figures that reappear in dreams and landscapes, including wolves and jaguars. Drawing on stories and ideas from Ed Roberson (“the idea of image and the idea of capture”), we explore ways to write about “what's there…but not seen,” including the namesake for the real Negro Mountain in Pennsylvania: an 18th c. African-American man named Nemesis, whom Giscombe calls “the long shadow on the mountain.” The book collages dreams, history, and multiple forms of address—"speeches, elocution, and theatrical masks”—to explore monstrous cultural projections. C.S. Giscombe teaches at the University of California's Berkeley campus, where he is the Robert Hass Chair in English. His prose and poetry books include Negro Mountain, Prairie Style, Ohio Railroads (“a long poem in the form of an essay”), Similarly (selected poetry and new work), Border Town, etc. In progress are Railroad Sense and Medicine Book. He is a long-distance cyclist.
In April 2023, the Boten-Vientiane line in Laos welcomed its first passengers. This high-speed train, a symbol of Beijing's New Silk Road initiative, connects the Laotian capital Vientiane to southern China in just a few hours. A vital commercial artery, it has opened up Laos, the region's only landlocked country. But the $6 billion project has come at a cost for Vientiane, which borrowed the money from China. More Chinese-funded infrastructure projects are now underway in places like Boten, a border town in Laos and the terminus of the high-speed rail link – a Chinese enclave in Laotian territory. Our regional correspondents report.

The torture and gruesome murders of three Navajo men by white high school students touched off a series of racially-fueled conflicts in Farmington, N.M. on the border with the Navajo Nation. The murders in April 1974 became known as the Chokecherry Massacre. One protest organizer at the time called Farmington “the Selma, Alabama of the Southwest,” referring to the simmering racial tensions. Demands by Navajos and other Native activists since then have improved relations in the border town and surrounding areas somewhat. But many residents and observers say the sources of the problems remain just below the surface. We'll recount this little-known period of Four Corners history and discuss what community relationships are like 50 years later. GUESTS John Redhouse (Diné and Ute), longtime activist Chili Yazzie (Diné), Shiprock community member Dr. Jennifer Denetdale (Diné), professor and chair of American Studies at the University of New Mexico Nate Duckett, Farmington mayor

In a dramatic turn at the U.S. southern border, illegal crossings in Eagle Pass, Texas, abruptly ceased following a significant visit by over 60 House Republicans. This sudden halt spotlighted the formidable control Mexican drug cartels wield over immigration, pausing operations to avoid bad optics during the Congressional visit. Despite December's staggering 302,000 illegal border crossings, Eagle Pass, a usually bustling entry point, witnessed an eerie calm, contrasting with the prior overwhelming influx that forced the closure of border points and overwhelmed local resources. The cartels, seemingly dictating the flow, paused their lucrative $32 million-a-week human smuggling operation, exposing the crisis's orchestrated nature. This event underscores a pressing need for strategic border management and robust policy responses to combat cartel dominance and ensure national security. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/darien-dunstan3/message

Title 42 had ended, and now multiple border communities have issued disaster declarations to help prepare for the surge of illegal migrants they expect to accommodate in the days following the end of the pandemic-era border policy. The Biden administration fought hard to overturn this policy, but now they've introduced a new immigration policy that would make seeking asylum stricter. The lifting of this policy, however, has caused record-high migrant detentions at the U.S.-Mexico border in recent days, worrying border communities about their capacity to handle the humanitarian crisis that may follow. Due to time limitations, we could not include all of the conversations in our original segment. On the FOX News Rundown Extra, you will hear our entire interview with Mayor Trevino about how his city is preparing for a huge surge of migrants, the strain that these surges put on the Laredo community, and how he would go about beginning to fix the U.S. immigration system. Yet, absent a secure borders policy, unrestrained immigration will make the vast majority of Americans worse off. To understand the toxic politics of Biden's open borders policies, one need only understand the late Professor James Q. Wilson's principle of “concentrated benefits, diffuse costs.
