Brent Axe chats live following Syracuse basketball's 66-62 win over FSU in the ACC Tournament. It was a "survive and advance " type game for SU who won despite shooting just 2-of-14 from 3-point range, 12-22 from the free throw line and letting a 16-point lead wilt down late in the game. Again. JJ Starling had 27 points for the Orange, 19 of which came in the second half. Become a Syracuse Sports Insider today! Brent Axe chats live following Syracuse basketball's 74-60 win over NC State. It was a win for the Orange in which it led from start-to-finish and now it looks like SU will avoid having the Scarlet Letter of one of 3 teams that don't qualify for the ACC Tournament. Axe breaks down how JJ Starling came alive in scoring 15 of his 17 points in the 2nd half, how SU was able to dominate the paint and how sometimes you just have to take what a bad team gives you. Axe also discusses the highly-inflated number Syracuse reported for attendance and how SU fans, while happy to get a win, are more interested in what awaits in rebuilding the roster in the transfer portal. Brent Axe chats live following Syracuse basketball's 88-82 loss to North Carolina. Another lackluster defensive effort haunted SU against the Tar Heels, wasting a 26-point night from Eddie Lampkin and 22 points from JJ Starling. SU's guiding light now with five games to go in the season is to avoid being left out of the ACC Tournament. Brent also discussed how he was was put to sleep by Adrian Autry's postgame presser and talked about how it demonstrated that even though the Orange play hard, they are just going through the motions four games below .500 with an 11-15 record. Axe also describes how JJ Starling was able to break free to score 16 of his 21 points in the 2nd half, the wild ending to the game and why Notre Dame's head coach flipped out and a major weakness SU needs to overcome. Brent Axe breaks down Syracuse basketball's 85-61 loss to Louisville at the JMA Dome. Louisville completely shut down SU guard JJ Starling, who was held to four points on 1-of-7 shooting. The Orange really didn't have a Plan B on offense with Starling out of the mix and Donnie Freeman still absent from the lineup with a leg injury. SU's defense wasn't much better as the Cardinals hit 12 3-pointers on the Orange with most of those coming from Chucky Hepburn, who had 24 points. Brent also discussed the vibe (or lack there of) in the Dome with a listed crowd of 19,750 certainly being inflated. 00:00-15:00: ESPN's Doug Sherman chats about how he would start his career at 18 now, JJ Starling's return and impact on the Orange, if SU is getting hot, how this ACC helps or hurts Syracuse's status and more.
Brent Axe recaps Syracuse basketball's 79-71 win over Boston College. The Orange used a late 22-6 run and were clutch at the free throw line down the stretch to earn its first road win of the season. JJ Starling was one of first Syracuse players in double figures with 26 points. Eddie Lampkin added 10 points and 13 rebounds. Kyle Cuffe gave SU a major lift off the bench in the second half, including two clutch 3-pointers. Brent also discusses how Adrian Autry needs to flip his starting lineup to JJ Starling, Cuffe, Eddie Lampkin, Jyare Davis (if Donnie Freeman is still out with injury) and Lucas Taylor and if Syracuse can "punch up" and beat Louisville on Tuesday night at the JMA Dome. Brent discusses SU's keys to victory including JJ Starling's 21 points and how he has made a significant difference in the lineup since returning from a hand injury. Syracuse basketball should be encouraged by its regular season especially since it was Adrian Autry's first year as the Syracuse Head Coach. A rinse and repeat performance by the North Carolina Tar Heels on Tuesday night allowed the Syracuse Orange to control the game throughout and ultimately led to a court storming win in the upstate, 86-76. RJ Davis led four Tar Heels in double figures but it was Orange guards Judah Mintz and JJ Starling along with forward Chris Bell that repeated cut up the UNC defense on the way to the victory. Greg Barnes joins host Tommy Ashley for the Inside Carolina Postgame podcast breaking down the night. Brent Axe chats live following Syracuse basketball's 86-79 victory over No. 7 North Carolina at the Dome. It was Syracuse's first win over a Top 10 team since defeating Duke in January of 2019. The Orange got a powerhouse performance from its backcourt with Judah Mintz (25) and JJ Starling (23) combining for 48 points. The Orange shot 63% against the Tar Heels, the first time UNC has allowed a team over 60% since 2015. Can this performance carry over through the rest of the season and how did it show Syracuse growing up as a team? The students stormed the court at the Dome. Axe talked about why SU fans saying "act like you've been there before" need to get over it but does call out some other questionable behavior by the students during the game. Brent also played back some audio from the locker room from Coach Autry, Judah Mintz and JJ Starling and reacted to opinions and comments from Syracuse Sports Insiders about the game. Locked On Tar Heels - Daily Podcast On North Carolina Tar Heels Football & Basketball
The North Carolina Tar Heels lost for the 3rd straight Tuesday, this one coming at the hands of the Syracuse Orange, whom Carolina had previously torched. The Tar Heel defense was not stout enough and allowed the Orange backcourt combo of Judah Mintze and JJ Starling to score 48 combined points. What's happened to the defense? Carolina figured out some efficiency with attacking Syracuse's zone, but not enough to overcome the defensive lack. Why did Hubert Davis choose to go with Elliot Cadeau chiefly operating as the facilitator out of the high post? How can Carolina re-group and put the pieces back together moving forward?Locked On Tar Heels Discord: https://discord.gg/DGhGSEPP2dFollow & Subscribe on all Podcast platforms…

Brent Axe chats live following Syracuse basketball's 86-66 loss to Duke on Tuesday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Duke was not hitting 3-pointers in the first half (0-9) but hit all 8 of its 3-point attempts in the second half to pull away from Syracuse. The Orange struggled from the 3-point line (4-16) and have to find an answer from beyond the arc. Is there one head coach Adrian Autry can turn to? Brent also discusses if Autry will have to consider a change in his starting lineup as Chris Bell, Justin Taylor and Naheem McLeod continue to struggle in that role and the Orange lineup of Judah Mintz, JJ Starling, Maliq Brown, Benny Williams and Quadir Copeland appears to be SU's best option at the moment, though Copeland struggled against Duke after earning the ACC player of the week award for his career-high performance against Pitt. Brent also reacted to opinions on the team from Syracuse Sports Insiders. Become a Syracuse Sports Insider today! Brent Axe recaps Syracuse basketball's 80-68 win over Georgetown on Syracuse basketball postgame presented by Crouse Health. Axe talks about how SU put forth its best all-around effort of the season against the Hoyas. Judah Mintz had 25 points and JJ Starling added 21, but it was the bench contributions of Quadir Copeland and Mounir Hima which really lifted SU to victory against the Hoyas in Washington D.C. Brent Axe and Mike Waters recap Syracuse basketball's 81-70 win over Cornell on Tuesday night at the JMA Dome. The Orange had to hold off a pesky Cornell team from springing an upset. They did it with 13 3-pointers, 28 points from Judah Mintz,, 19 from Chris Bell, an all-around great game from Justin Taylor and 12 rebounds from Maliq Brown. Even players who struggled for the most part, in this case Quadir Copeland and JJ Starling, made key plays to give SU the win. Axe and Waters also discuss Benny Williams not playing against Cornell and how that situation evolved throughout the game with Williams putting on his warm-ups, sitting on the bench during timeouts and distancing himself from team huddles. However, Houston has to potentially face Auburn in the second round....in Birmingham. And may be without Marcus Sasser. Will the midwest and west end up with Kansas and Houston in the Final 4? Or will Texas or Miami pull through? What kind of upsets could we see, from a team like VCU or Drake? We close the show making region MVP and breakout player predictions, while covering JJ Starling's commitment to Syracuse and Will Wade's new job, and suspension, at McNeese State. The Final Four Is Not On The Schedule - A Michigan State Basketball Podcast.
November 28, 2022: It was announced today (November 28) that ESPN is canceling the Big10/ACC Challenge going forward and this will be its last year. The conference challenge will be replaced by the SEC/ACC challenge next year and we suspect we will see some iteration of the Big10/Big12 challenge as its replacement. Anyway, Michigan State will head into South Bend to take on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in an interesting matchup. Notre Dame is 5-1 but has looked shaky and not very dominant despite playing lesser competition. They are led by 4 fifth year starters and an athletic heralded freshman in JJ Starling. Per usual, Notre Dame is a good offense ranking #28 in KenPom with decent shooting and turnover percentage. However, they are an unmitigated disaster on defense ranking #168 in overall defense where the only bright spot is good defensive rebounding. It appears that the Spartans will be without Jaden Akins again as well as Malik Hall who still has a few weeks left to recover from the stress reaction in his foot. Expect to see MSU try to get out and run and build upon their shooting success against a poor defensive team. We wouldn't expect a lot of offensive rebounding against Notre Dame but perhaps they haven't yet been challenged by a team like MSU. Finally, if Michigan State gets a lead, will they be able to hold it without any late game heroics? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
