Joe Banks, author of Hawkwind: Days of the Undergound, is back in Derry and Toms to enthuse about a film that was, for me, a shock revelation about one of Britain's most misunderstood bands. Not only were Slade a hard rocking act whose reputation as a live act belies their popular image as a slightly goofy glam rock fixture from early 70s Top of the Pops that invade our ears every bloody Xmas... But in 1975 they took a big swing (and commercially a miss), resulting in an incredible film about the seedy underbelly of the music business that turned 50 this year. It spawned a fantastic novelisation too, courtesy of the late John Pidgeon and published by Panther, that ranks up there with the sweatiest, grittiest NEL pulps of the mid-70s. So we talk about that too. JOIN US!

HAWKBINGE RETURNS with a monster of an episode: so much Hawkwind news to catch up, the big release from 1995 to dissect and the big bonus of a chat with our good friend Joe Banks about his most excellent new Hawkwind book “Sideways Through Time”. Prepare to abducted by the Hawkbinge podcast and not returned to reality for several hours…So, we're still in 1995 for Hawkwind's second release of that year, “Alien 4”. Some new faces in the mix for an album based largely around the concept of alien abduction. We check out the first appearances for both Ron Tree and Jerry Richards, deep dive into  this maybe-kinda-concept album, ponder who the aliens really are and finish up with some Space Sex. No, really. As ever, we also look back at the music scene in the latter part of 1995, check out the state of the band at the time and explore the album art, while also adding tracks to the forthcoming Hawkbinge Sessions Vol 7 playlist on Spotify from albums we've been listening to in between our respective alien abductions. And finally… a visit to the pod from Joe for a chat about his new book provides a most excellent way to kick off our 2025 episodes. This episode, coming out on Christmas Eve, is with two of my best friends. They are pastors who lead a church in Illinois, formerly led youth ministry in Georgia. We had a superb conversation about the true meaning of Christmas...what a close relationship with Jesus looks like...misconceptions of our faith because of "headline theology"...the importance of friendship on Earth...reading the entire Bible in 30 days...the challenges of ministry...and a lil football too. (3:03) Joe Banks and Jarrod Six are the lead and executive pastors of Abundant Church in Alton IL. The 3 of us met a decade+ ago in Columbus GA. We start our pod chat with why CHRISTmas is the culmination of our faith and how it's an opportunity to show others our authenticity. How can an intimate relationship with Jesus (his birth being celebrated) be compared to intimacy in our marriage? (13:51) For those who want to hear God speak to you, His Word is a great start. Pastor Joe talks about some in their church kicking off 2025 with a Bible Shred, reading the entire book in 30 days! And they both gives keys to success to discipline in reading the Bible on a regular basis. In the face of life's ups and downs, (24:05) friendship is also crucial or "redwood faith." They explain. And instead of Christianity being about a stuffy set of rules to follow, His Word describes a life of joy. But what's it really like working with a best friend, side-by-side in the tough world of ministry? They both love football, but sports or other things we put above God...can become a real problem. (49:30) Holidays are for celebrations, but it can also be depressing and difficult, so these guys talk about how to bring people into community. Jarrod opens up about how it can be heavy for pastors carrying other people's burdens but it's a calling. And finding balance in ministry is a myth. (1:04:50) Joe closes us out with a prayer of blessing. Merry Christmas everyone!! Thanks for listening to the #RunTheRace podcast, which I hope you'll subscribe to! Share it with your friends. So it turns out there's a 'Britain is Fucked' novel about Hawkwind tonning around in a van fighting ghosts and squares with guns that shoot their music AND that happens to feature Moorcock as a tertiary character with a saucy house computer. WHO KNEW??? Well, some of you did obviously... but I didn't until my mate Yarks sent me a copy for my birthday a few years ago. It turns out that I was dimly aware of author Michael Butterworth at the time as I'd had some of his Space 1999 novelisations on my shelf for f'n years without realising that he was one of the dudes behind Savoy Books and appears to be a really cool cat. So who better to drop by Derry and Toms to talk about it than Joe Banks, author of Hawkwind: Days of the Underground: Radical Escapism in the Age of Paranoia? Nobody. Nobody better. JOIN US!

Fortunately (?) he learns he has a rare disease called a brain cloud, which is asymptomatic but will kill him in six months. Joe accepts this without question, and so also agrees to help a millionaire superconductor magnate secure the mining rights on a small Polynesian island by jumping into a volcano. None of this crazy plot really matters because this movie has, just, so many Meg Ryans, you guys, so many. It seems Sam and Danielle have uncovered the truth of the Tom Hanksiverse series of movies and it will shock you (it's Meg Ryan, the truth is it's Meg Ryan all the way down). Despite these shocking revelations, Danielle and Sam manage to get through this movie about a man dealing with his mortality through encounters with a series of Meg Ryans, but they have one qualm with the film: It needs more Meg Ryans.

Laurie Taylor investigates the people who hear the voices of the dead in recorded sounds - and uncovers the strange and haunting world of auditory illusion. Believers in EVP, or Electronic Voice Phenomena think they're hearing the voices of the beyond - messages captured in the throb and static of white noise. Laurie Taylor's a rationalist - he doesn't go in for this mumbo-jumbo. But whilst the peculiar world of EVP may not be evidence of the afterlife, it does show how we're susceptible - far more susceptible than we might have ever believed - to be deceived by our ears. Laurie takes us on an mind-bending journey through the world of aural hallucination and illusion - revealing how the ghosthunters of EVP actually are showing off something rather profound about the flaws in our auditory perception...and they way we scrabble for meaning in the booming, buzzing confusion of the world around us. Contributors include the acclaimed expert on auditory illusion Diana Deutsch, writer and sound artist Joe Banks, neurologist Sophie Scott and parapsychologist Ann Winsper. The Sweeties are back from Ireland, we just bought a new car, and BONUS we decided to watch probably your 22nd favorite Tom Hanks movie .... Joe Versus The Volcano! From 1990 and starring Meg Ryan, times three, this is an oddball of a film that is hopelessly quirky yet funny and romantic in an off beat sort of way.  Joe Banks is a hypochondriac with a shittay job until he finds out he has a brain cloud and only five months to live so he quits!  Some rich old man cons him into jumping into a volcano to soothe the spirits of the island of Wampani Woo somewhere in the South Pacific. But with this death sentence, Joe Banks gets a new lease on life, even if he is to believe it's just a short lease, and finds himself on an adventure of a lifetime! As kids we thought this movie was funny and kinda neato -- but it actually has some really deep parts to it! We'll talk about our eternal love for Tom Hanks and his amazing gift of physical comedy, try to remember all the randoms stars that are in this film, talk about our own hypochondriac stories and try to get to the bottom of all the massive symbolism in this film. Come jump into the volcano with us!

Brien Stewart formed AVAIL in 1988 with Joe Banks, Doug Crosby, and Mikey Warstler. He and his bandmates had the idea to put on a concert featuring bands from the burgeoning local scene, and with the support of his bandmate’s mom, Patty Warstler--who ran the local Youth Club--put on the first Jam for Man concert. After the band moved to Richmond in 1990 and his good friend, Andy Wells, died tragically in a drunk-driving accident, Brien left the band. He went on to play in many memorable bands from the Reston hardcore scene, including L.D.K. (Learning Disabled Kids), BSR (Basic Skills Review), and Lickity Split. He has been recording with Ruin By Design since 2015 and they are putting the finishing touches on a new album this summer. Jolyon Jenkins reports on the world of electronic voice phenomena (EVP) - the community of people who believe that the dead can speak to us through radio transmissions and white noise. The technique was introduced to the English speaking world by a mysterious Latvian, Dr Konstantin Raudive, who travelled to Britain in 1969 with recordings of Hitler, Churchill and Stalin speaking from beyond the grave. The method is now a mainstay of paranormal investigators. Jolyon unearths tapes from 40 years ago made at a key séance held by Dr Raudive in Gerrards Cross. Raudive eventually came to believe that a budgerigar called Putzi was passing on messages from a dead 14 year old girl. Jolyon speaks to EVP current practitioners, and to a man who believes that his recordings of animal noises also contain messages. The claims are improbable, but they tell us interesting things about human perception: about our ability to construct meaning from meaningless sound, and about how our brains naturally fill in the gaps where information is incomplete. Optical illusions are well known, but we are equally prone to being fooled by audio illusions. Sound artist Joe Banks suggests that, while EVP researchers may be carrying out parapsychology experiments, they are unwittingly doing conventional psychology experiments.

The 1990 romantic(ish) comedy  off-beat Fairy Tale Joe Versus The Volcano Synopsis:A 1990 Romantic Comedy staring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan (the first of three films they've done together). Hanks plays Joe Banks, a miserable everyman in a dead-end job with a Bad Boss. To make matters worse, Joe is diagnosed with a mysterious "brain cloud" that will kill him in six months. Enter an Eccentric Millionaire, who is trying to acquire the rights to a rare mineral on a South Pacific island. The natives will only give him the mineral rights if he finds a hero to Appease the Volcano God for them. The millionaire hires Joe, who agrees to jump into the volcano at the end of a month of living it up on an all-expense-paid voyage. Hilarity Ensues. In this review we discuss production History of How "Joe Versus the Volcano" got made, our headcanon building upon the Tom Hanks Cinematic Universe, and we discuss liking the film despite not liking it. So quit your job, ask that person out that you've been too afraid to, and take a leap of faith as we review the movie! (Don't do any of those things if you plan on holding us responsible for the repercussions.) Favorite Quotes Marshall: What kinda clothes do you got now? Joe: Well, I got the kinda clothes I'm wearing. Marshall: So, you got no clothes. Mr. Waturi: But can he do the job. I know he can get the job but can he DO the job? I'm NOT arguing that with you. I'm not arguing that with YOU. I'm not ARGUING that with you. I'm not ARGUING that with you Harry! Harry... Harry... Yeah Harry... but can he DO the job. I know he can GET the job but can he do the job? Luggage Salesman: This is our premier steamer trunk, it's all handmade, only the finest materials. It's even watertight, tight as a drum. If I had the need, and the wherewithal, Mr. Banks, this would be my trunk of choice. Joe Banks: I'll take four of them. Luggage Salesman: May you live to be a thousand years old, sir.  Siskel & Ebert - "Joe Versus The Volcano" (1990) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0xjiHI1cK8k Joe VS. Imaginary Hospital Radio mimics and subverts conventional hospital radio and its aim to relieve its listeners/patients through the collaging and dissecting of the visceral and surgical sounds associated with illness and disease. The hospitals unwanted sounds and noise provide an unexpected artistic source, as a kind of sonic tableau an invisible operating theatre in which the sonic/audio auscultation/surgery occurs live to ear. Richard Crow is an inter-disciplinary artist with a strong background in experimental audio work, photo based media, live performance and site-specific installation. He utilises sound and noise in a performative way, for its spatial and subjective qualities and above all for its psycho-physical implications for the listener. Over the past two decades his solo and collaborative site-specific installations and performances have consisted of highly conceptualised interventions into base materiality, investigations of alternative systems of organisation and research into a certain material decadence, most notably with the project The Institution of Rot. Crow has collaborated, performed, and recorded with many leading musicians and sonic artists including Joe Banks, Adam Bohman, The Hafler Trio, Clive Graham, Michael Prime, Dean Roberts, Kaffe Matthews, Michael Morley, Sandoz Lab Techinicians, & dy'na:mo.
