This week we get alllllll creepy crawly. We watched Arachnophobia, another movie, like almost all movies, that doesn't have nearly enough John Goodman! “Before Eight-Legged Freaks made spiders scream-worthy and before Jeff Daniels became America's favorite newsroom anchor, there was Arachnophobia—the movie that turned every shoe, vacuum, and rolled-up newspaper into a weapon of survival. This week on Myopia Movies, we crawl back to 1990 to face our fears—literally—with a horror-comedy that dares to ask: what if your quaint small town was overrun by an army of venomous spiders with a taste for blood… and interior design? Is it scary? Is it silly? Is it the Jaws of the jungle gym set? Let's put it to the test as we examine toxic masculinity, arachnid-based paranoia, and John Goodman as a pest control cowboy who deserves his own franchise. So shake out your shoes, check the corners of your room, and join us for Arachnophobia—a movie that proves once and for all: nature is coming for us… one creepy leg at a time.” How will Arachnophobia hold up? Today we talk about two legends: Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger! Our B-Sides include I Know Where I'm Going!, The Small Back Room, Gone to Earth, and The Elusive Pimpernel. Our guest is the legend Katie Walsh, podcaster and film critic at the Tribune News Service & LA Times. Also discussed is Powell's infamous (and masterful) opus Peeping Tom, the duo's later work (Oh... Rosalinda!!, The Battle of the River Plate), Powell's autobiography, and the career of Jennifer Jones. Be sure to give us a follow on social at @tfsbside.bsky.social.

EPISODE 184: Jason is joined by Drew from Reel Feels and Parker from Dissect That Film to take on the monstrous world of creature features! Together, they tackle five iconic films that redefined horror and sci-fi terror. From the subterranean terrors of Tremors (1990) to the skin-crawling suspense of Arachnophobia (1990), the eerie allure of Guillermo del Toro's Cronos (1993), the genetic nightmares of Mimic (1997), and the high-seas horror of Deep Rising (1998), this episode ranks and reviews the creatures that made us all a little more paranoid. Buckle up for survival, suspense, and mayhem!
Sting is a nasty little creature feature that came and went to little notice. Released on under 1,000 screens, this tale of a cosmic spider running amok is sure to make the hairs of any arachnophobe stand up. It's lean; it's mean; and it's got enough gross gore to unsettle even the least squeamish of us. It's like Alien—if the Xenomorph was an eight-legged freak who enjoyed dining on birds, babies, and pups. Now, sit back, drown the ick with a West Bestern IPA from Belching Beaver, and don't you dare whistle! The Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Chumpzilla, and Bling Blake are washing ourselves with mothball water to keep Sting away! It's episode 291…and would anyone object if I tore this floor out? Arachnophobia (1990) takes us to the sleepy Californian town of Canaima, via the jungle sinkholes of Venezuela, to follow the story of the newly arrived family physician Dr Ross Jennings. When townsfolk begin dropping dead in mysterious circumstances, Jennings suspects foul play of the eight-legged variety, but is it just his Arachnophobia talking? No, as we've seen the spider, and it's been biting and killing people. Death comes to a Spielberg-inflected sleepy suburbia as we talk about spiders vs. dead mammals, another in a long line of creepy coroners with bad food hygiene, programmes you'd take your phone off the hook for and why an entomologist suddenly becomes a spider-freak. All of which leads to one question: How would you survive? Whatever happens, one thing's for sure: A web would indicate an arachnoid presence. Next time on the main feed, it's Spider season, with creepy-crawly classic Vermines/Infested (2023), meanwhile it's Shyamalan time on the Patreon with Knock at the Cabin (2023).
“How do you not kill the guy on the toilet?” - Eric On the season 14 finale of We Hate Movies, the gang welcomes actor/comedian/podcaster/author/movie-lover and all-around good guy, Paul Scheer to the show to chat about the sleepy, yet kinda crazy monster movie, Arachnophobia! Why isn't this movie just about John Goodman's exterminator character? Why couldn't the major spider at the end be a huge, dumb puppet monster? How funny is it that this movie doesn't care about those kid characters at all? Why couldn't we see that dumb sheriff eat shit on-screen? Why would you uproot your whole family without being absolutely certain you have that job, Jeff Daniels? And you better believe we're marveling at all the Seinfeld alums in this! PLUS: Just watch Shatner in Kingdom of the Spiders instead of this. Arachnophobia stars Jeff Daniels, Harley Jane Kozak, Julian Sands, Stuart Pankin, Brian McNamara, Mark L. Taylor, Henry Jones, Peter Jason, James Handy, Roy Brocksmith, Kathy Kinney, Mary Carver, Frances Bay, and John Goodman as Delbert McClintok; directed by Frank Marshall. It's episode 290…and the Internet and dreams are similar. They're areas where the repressed conscious mind escapes. Paprika (2006) follows its titular dream-based protagonist, and her real-life alter ego Dr Atsuko Chiba, as she administers a futuristic form of therapy using a prototype device called the DC Mini. However, when so-called ‘Dream Terrorists' steal the devices and use it to run rampant through other people's dreams with disastrous results, it's up to Dr Chiba and her motley crue of scientists to find them before it's too late. We break down the second half of Anime horror/Satoshi Kon/'films that Hollywood sort of remade with just enough changes to avoid a lawsuit' season (what could this film about a device that allows you to invade other people's dreams have inspired I wonder?) and discuss the joys and pains of a creative portrayal of limitless dreamspace, characters both paper thin and fatphobic, and rank spices/condiments based on Joe's usage relative to Ketchup and Mayo. Plus, what would make Chris finally commit to buying a neuralink? All of which leads to one question: How would you survive? Whatever happens, one thing's for sure: The shade of the tree with the flowers that bloom at night is where the residents of darkness rest. The people of daytime are not allowed! Next time on the main feed, it's Spider season, with creepy-crawly classic Arachnophobia (1990).
A phobia is defined as the “irrational fear” of certain things or situations. Arachnophobia is a fear of spiders (though some might argue that’s a perfectly rational thing to be afraid of!). Then there’s globophobia and xocolatophobia. These and some four hundred other phobias are real and documented. It seems we can become afraid of most anything. The Bible tells of the Israelites’ fear after receiving the Ten Commandments: “When the people saw the thunder and lightning . . . they trembled in fear” (Exodus 20:18). Moses comforted them, offering this most interesting statement: “Do not be afraid. God has come to test you, so that the fear of God will be with you” (v. 20). Moses seems to contradict himself: “Don’t be afraid but be afraid.” In fact, the Hebrew word for “fear” contains two meanings—a trembling terror of something or a reverent awe of God. We may laugh to learn that globophobia is the fear of balloons and xocolatophobia is a fear of chocolate. The more serious bottom line about phobias is that we can be afraid of all kinds of things. Fears creep into our lives like spiders, and the world can be a scary place. As we struggle with phobias and fears, we do well to be reminded that our God is an awesome God, offering us his present comfort in the midst of darkness.
