As we head into Good Friday and Easter weekend, a local Pastor joined us to talk about Jesus dying on the Cross and rising again...growing up as a pastor's kid and his own call into ministry...what it was like starting a brand new church...how we can lay down our lives daily, as Jesus died for us...opportunities for churches on Easter...and their year-long prayer chain. (3:25) The crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus was Plan A, but we can't live up to His standard. Pastor Grant Collins of Fountain City Church in Columbus GA explains that and how it applies to our lives. (13:48) His dad was a longtime pastor, and they were at church a lot. What kind of help does he give Pastor Grant, over the last few decades ago of ministry (also sharing those moments he felt called). And being obedient to God helps you discovery your unique calling. (27:45) Starting or planting their church 7 years ago, it was scary and their family almost went to Turkey instead. Pastor Grant had a wakeup moment that helped change his definition of faith and lead a mission-focused church without empty religious traditions. He says here are things we can do to take up our cross daily: disown ourselves, be convicted by His Word, put ourselves in God's presence, be rooted in community, have accountability partner(s), get involved in church. (52:30) Is his church doing Easter different than other Sunday services? Regardless, he knows it's one of the most attended and calls this an opportunity to share the Gospel, connect people with community. Fountain City Church is also leading a 2025 "Unbroken Prayer Chain for the Chattahoochee Valley" which other churches, businesses, small groups, etc. can sign up to pray certain days or weeks to help with what this pastor calls a spiritual "awakening" in this area: https://fountaincity.churchcenter.com/registrations/events/2643050. She operates a cafe in West Georgia with a motto of "serving coffee with kindness." We could all use that in our world today. Rewind back to what made her focus on loving people out of dark times, this business owner talks about growing up dirt poor with a mom who made life magical with outdoors adventures...leaving everything to hike the Appalachian Trail...making plans to kill herself but why she didn't do it...and the healing power of kayaking. Now, she's opening up a first-of-its-kind venture in the Chattahoochee Valley. (3:18) The owner of The Brick and Mortar Cafe in Columbus GA first talks about why she left her 3 jobs and sold all her stuff, a decade ago, to set out to hike the AT from Georgia to Maine - and then why she had to stop after nearly 700 miles. The roots of it were depression and proving something to herself and the power to keep moving. And in Maine, she got a job managing a coffee shop that inspired her to open up her own! (10:00) The mission of her coffee shop in "Old Town" is to love people where they are, put a smile on customers' faces. That comes from the dark place of Heather being suicidal, years ago, and one final phone call stopped her. Brick & Mortar may not be faith-based, but they want to touch people's lives. A small part of that is writing uplifting messages on their coffee cups. Heather also hopes she can inspire/mentor other female entrepreneurs who, like her, may have though these dreams are not achievable. Growing up as a people pleaser, she's also learning to take care of herself. She also talks about how her life changed from losing her mom recently, after being her caregiver, and how the cafe community she build supported her so much. (24:45) The next business for her is a collaboration with the owner of local italian restaurant Treviolis called "The Collegiate Outpost" inside Columbus Technical College, a new concept for this part of GA. it's not just a place for coffee, sandwiches, pastries, pasta but also designed with a culinary internship program where students can learn skills and get future jobs at area restaurants, cafes. (27:37) Not owning a TV for the last few decades, Heather loves the outdoors - getting on the water and in the woods for decompression, stress relief, meditation. And Heather gets emotional talking about how her mom showed them how powerful and exciting it is to be out in nature. She also shares some wisdom she's learned from the valleys and mountaintops...her evolving from a judgmental young Christian to a person focused on love instead of legalism...plus some of her favorite coffee drinks. And I close out the episode talking about the pros and cons of coffee for your health and workouts, then a final prayer. We also talk on this episode about transitioning from being only to runner to strength training...dealing with the pressures of being a strong woman on the job and in the gym...and how faith brought her out of a path of panic. After a update on the growth of women's sports, (6:20) Madison Montgomery joins in to talk about her Final Four experience, why it's important to shine the light on female athletes, and her advice for young women. (17:00) Becoming "too thin" a year ago, Madison has since lifted weights more and hired a nutrition coach. You may be surprised what she's learned about workouts and especially food (and more of it). She also describes the "athlete camp" she recently attended. (27:18) In her mid 20s and busy juggling school and jobs and being fit...she started having panic attacks which led to depression and thoughts of suicide. She shares her story to help other women who may think they need to portray having it all together. (37:08) And Madison credits getting through dark times to the Lord's grace. Known as Chap, this Puerto Rican Chaplain in Georgia is focused on church unity and diversity, and showing our faith with works, hence the name of the church he's the founder and pastor for: Love in Action Outreach Ministries. He's also the organizer of a special event this weekend called "March for Jesus Columbus." You can learn more about both at https://www.facebook.com/loveinactionoutreachga. (2:33) Chaplain Emilio Rosa first talks about his call into ministry, that started with translating his dad's sermons into English for a church at age 8. (8:26) He recalls facing racism while growing up as a minority in the 1970s in Brooklyn NY. Rosa opens up about pet peeves about churches separated by race, but what can be done about the divided body of Christ? He says we have to be intentional about being with those that don't look like us, amidst a push lately for multicultural churches. (13:45) The event March for Jesus will happen in downtown Columbus GA - for a 4th year - on Saturday March 15, with gathering at 9am at St. Luke church then heading out on 3 mile march at 10am, with a break in the middle for a brief message and worship. Part of this is praying for local cities and leaders. Columbus' mayor is scheduled to be involved again. Rosa talks about why being part of this is so important, getting out of your comfort zone, showing a diverse group that has a message of hope for those seeing this march. (27:05) The chaplain also breaks down the ACTION part of his church "Love In Action Outreach." Most of Jesus' work was outside the church. He talks about how he/we can identify needs. Part of the way Rosa does it is through being on the Columbus Hispanic Outreach Committee - sharing resources, networking, then doing. This president of the local AHSAA association, covering schools in East Alabama, also gets in tens of thousands of steps during each football game as a white hat. It sometimes has to dance on the football field to keep from being run over. (22:04) Dana has also become a student of the game of hockey that he loves now. His day job is endodontist (dentist) in the Griffin GA area, but some people may see his hobby as extremely challenging: running a marathon race or more per month for the last 8 years! That includes some 100 milers. On "Run The Race," Paul Shepherd talks about that consistency as he chases marathons/ultras in all 50 states...favorite races like Boston and UTMB in France and beyond...benefits of trail running...this sport as a way to be humble and grow closer to God...building his own running trails...and other cool race stories, from Jerusalem to ones themed for history or military. (2:07) This episode kicks off with my personal recap of my latest 26.2 mile race, the Rehobeth Beach Seashore Marathon in DE, which Paul ran as well! (11:06) Paul talks about the keys to consistency vs. fleeting motivation. What helps is having 2 signed-up-for races on the calendar at all times. He's 47 states into his marathon journey now. (19:20) Paul has run some of the big ones like the Boston Marathon, the Kona triathlon, and Ultra Trail Mont Blanc (UTMB) - he goes into details about the trails there from France into Italy/Switzerland, the 106 mile loop with 36K feet of vertical, in an area where his grandfather escaped after being shot down in Germany during WWII. After a little on the pros and cons of running on trials - which he likes better - (28:03) we dive into his mindset of being a "forever beginner," trying new things and staying humble with new skills. Running, in his eyes, is also spiritual - because when we stress our bodies (like in ultra races), the spirit carries us and we connect with God who "designed us to run." (37:00) Paul also built a half marathon trail on the land where he lives, inspired in part by "Field of Dreams." It means sharing fun and suffering at home with fellow runners. (42:20) After giving his take on our DE marathon together, he talks about making core memories as he runs races all across America, helping him learn and love our country even more. This June, he plans to run a marathon in his 50th state, joining the only 2,000 people in the world that have done that. We wrap up our chat with some of his quick stories about the Jerusalem Marathon, painfully going down stairs after his early-on Soldier Marathon, and his still marathon-running 82-year-old dad being his run hero. (3:20) Andrea Mills' high school senior daughter took her own life on February 6, 2019. What prompted it may shock you. It was a wakeup call for this family...and a warning for so many others, before it's too late. It has to do with purpose, self-worth and empowerment for teenagers. (14:20) Andrea felt major guilt, but God kept her going...and seeing so many others with intrusive thoughts motivated her to go from grieving mom to advocate! Along with sharing their personal story, she has advice for other moms and dads about what to ask your teens and talk to them about. For the last 4 years, she has led a nonprofit named after their daughter where they talk about navigating mistakes/failures (that will happen) at many school assemblies, which have had 80,000 attendees so far, preparing young people and their parents for this fight! Suicide comes with stigma too, to even talk about, but Andrea says we have to use our voices for change. (27:45) Faith is also a centerpiece in the story of Lexi and her family. So is spiritual warfare and people pouring into each other with encouragement (for outsiders and "comfort carriers" too). Andrea also explains the message behind the name "Love Like Lexi." (42:05) And this Thursday February 6, they'll be hosting the tri-city Live Project Crusade at Woodruff Park in Columbus with free food, new inspiring music, the Miracle Riders and other groups - all to help people out of the darkness. Are you ready for a change or to live your best life? Maybe God is signaling to you it's time for a shift. A new life coach is ready to help you prepare and organize with a strategy. Quadasia (Dasi) Love wears a lot of other hats too: international chaplain, model and actress, and a prophet at her church (through the fivefold ministry) that's focused on unity and going soon to Zambia. (3:15) Dasi Love kicks us off on this podcast episode with insight on how faith impacts big life changes for us, like God's call and tools to do special things vs. bad habits and the world's distractions. There are plans that need to be made over the course of months, part of her life coaching called "My Kairos Time" (greek for due season): https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61571592010474. (8:40) Time management is huge for a lot of us. Time to eliminate excuses. And when do you know to make that sometimes-scary change in your life? Dasi says "God can't be through you what He isn't to you." She went from being a pre-med Biology major in college and a future Dr. Love....to a real relationship with Jesus, attending seminary and becoming a Chaplain for Dunamis International Chaplains. This young woman is (19:03) also an actress and model who won't comprise on certain photo/video shoots. She was the stand-in and running double for the main actress in the Kendrick Brothers' popular film "Overcomer." (25:35) Dasi also loves to discuss what true unity looks like, in and out of the church. She's learned a lot from her job as a chaplain - going where they're needed! (32:50) One more hat she wears is as a prophet top make sure others are in alignment with the Word of God, not as a "fortune teller." This is part of the Christian concept of fivefold ministry - 5 roles to serve the church in different ways. Satan can also pervert those roles or what's in the Bible. What can also get in the way of those gifts are pride, churches' fear of criticism, denomination differences, pastors not held accountable). (44:33) Along with fundraising for a Fall 2025 trip to Zambia, Dasi Love also has partnered with pastors to help persecuted believes in the Islamic state of Pakistan. She explains...then closes our episode out in prayer. Thanks for listening to the #RunTheRace podcast, which I hope you'll subscribe to! Share it with your friends. The young woman on the podcast today is a lawyer and road runner turned therapist + ultra athlete + race director who shares some insightful, deep thoughts on finding the right career path...the path of running as a healer instead of a competition...why and how she's done numerous 100 mile races now...her tools to help professionals and athletes that are very driven...and how sports (especially endurance) can help with your mental health. Subscribe to "Run The Race" to hear more inspiring guests talking about fitness and faith. After talking about the rare snow we just had in Georgia - and getting to run in it - (6:34) I introduce to y'all Emily Labutta, a licensed Associate Professional Counselor with Atlanta Wellness Collective, a big change from her years as a criminal prosecutor. Why the change? And her reasons for running have changed too! you can probably relate to what she's been through. Now, it's about adventure (on trails) instead of performance. Great quote from her: "What happens in the soul is better than what happens on the watch." (17:24) Athletes can be driven...and as a therapist now, she can help with positive aspirations/energy instead of negative self-talk. Listen, she cries during long races, then gets to running again. She's completed nine 100 mile races in the last 3 years, including a recent one around a track in less than 24 hours! Emily has some wisdom about training your legs, stomach and more for those long distances...and how to ACCEPT the PAIN. (33:24) Sports challenges also help a lot with self-discovery and our own resilience, what we can and cannot do (both important). She explains the connections that can happen between endurance athletics and trauma. (43:51) She also helps lead events as a co-race director, adding that job now with Revolution Running in Georgia. Her newly created race The SPARROW (I'm running the 3 hour but there's a 6 hr option) on February 8 in Flowery Branch GA is named for a Latin phrase that means "While I breathe, I hope." We had a superb conversation about the true meaning of Christmas...what a close relationship with Jesus looks like...misconceptions of our faith because of "headline theology"...the importance of friendship on Earth...reading the entire Bible in 30 days...the challenges of ministry...and a lil football too. (3:03) Joe Banks and Jarrod Six are the lead and executive pastors of Abundant Church in Alton IL. The 3 of us met a decade+ ago in Columbus GA. We start our pod chat with why CHRISTmas is the culmination of our faith and how it's an opportunity to show others our authenticity. How can an intimate relationship with Jesus (his birth being celebrated) be compared to intimacy in our marriage? (13:51) For those who want to hear God speak to you, His Word is a great start. Pastor Joe talks about some in their church kicking off 2025 with a Bible Shred, reading the entire book in 30 days! And they both gives keys to success to discipline in reading the Bible on a regular basis. In the face of life's ups and downs, (24:05) friendship is also crucial or "redwood faith." They explain. And instead of Christianity being about a stuffy set of rules to follow, His Word describes a life of joy. But what's it really like working with a best friend, side-by-side in the tough world of ministry? They both love football, but sports or other things we put above God...can become a real problem. (49:30) Holidays are for celebrations, but it can also be depressing and difficult, so these guys talk about how to bring people into community. Jarrod opens up about how it can be heavy for pastors carrying other people's burdens but it's a calling. And finding balance in ministry is a myth. We have a lot going on in our world and personal lives these days. Preaching lately about stress-free leadership and stress-free marriages, my guest this week is a Pastor in East AL and West GA who's giving some raw insight on hearing the voice of God (instead of trying to build faith) to help discover His will for your life...helping spiritual leaders in America plus on his numerous missions to Africa...strengthening the church's connection to communities...and why he started the "Unite The Valley" nonprofit that's about to have it's first big leadership event, a month from now. You can learn more and sign up at https://utvchatt.com/. (2:28) Pastor Curtis Doleman Jr. of Praise Ministry Tabernacle (Phenix City AL) explains how a deep connection to God and knowing His voice...leads directly to hearing the Lord's instructions for our life. To improve in leadership or anything else, do you try using your own tools or trust God and the tools he gives us? That can make it stressful or not. There are pre-conceived notions for leaders. He also explains the "staring contest" with God. (15:55) 33 years ago, Pastor Curtis had an unconventional salvation experience, alone in his bedroom. You don't want to miss this story, what he said to God and the quick responses in Scripture. (21:01) After going into ministry, he went on overseas Missions including to Africa, where Curtis also focuses on preaching to the leaders of churches, who also are stressed out and striving at times. He talks about the difference in prayer and worship in African nations. (29:45) A pastor for three decades himself, Curtis has long been called to help strengthen the church, which at times he says is like a "circus." Should we be quiet and stoic in church out of respect, trying to act perfect...or should we strive for freedom, real faith and an authentic experience with God? We talk about grace and sin too. (39:45) He also describes the paramount importance of faith leaders being connected with the community, local government, other leaders where you live. (46:50) The nonprofit he founded "Unite The Valley" has "lunch and learns" the 2nd Thursday of each month. And soon, they're hosting a leadership symposium January 9-10 in Columbus GA. He talks about the goals of these events, to lift up leaders. Pastor Curtis says the church does not lack anointing but has a lack of leadership. (55:35) And he closes our episode out in Prayer. It depicts what the Bible foretells about the Rapture to the Tribulation. On this pod episode, hear what this special event is all about, leading to thousands of lives transformed. (4:00) David Barr leads the final conversion portion of "Judgment Journey" that takes place at Faith Baptist Church in Lagrange GA, which 3,000 people attended on its first two nights. There are 6 more opportunities, the next Fridays and Saturdays through November 2. In these perilous times, this 45 minute human drama that you ride through brings the Bible book of Revelations to life, according to David. He talks about the new technology, tickets selling fast, and their goal of presenting the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Tickets are $25 each and they are selling out. Here's more info: https://www.judgmentjourney.com/. (11:20) Is it ok to make a decision for Christ out of fear? in Judgment Journey, they present the dark realities of post-Rapture life and Hell, but they also are focused on planting seeds of faith by presenting the love of God, as we make a monumental choice. (15:13) David explains what you can expect on this 45-minute journey - with 14 different scenes/elements - and how it's Scripturally based. (25:20) Judgment has a negative connotation, but in this sense, David says what God does is like discipline from a parent, out of love. He also describes the steps they take before/during/after someone chooses Salvation at Judgment Journey, which they signify by ringing a bell. (38:00) For those who don't attend church or have been hurt by Christians, this is seen as a nontraditional church activity that some people event think is a Haunted house or trail. #219: From Fed Prison To Pastor, Helping us PRESS IN to God and Worship to Start Workday

After spending nearly 15 years in federal prison, this former longtime drug addict got his freedom and became a pastor for a home church and a nonprofit recovery program that is connected to a business in East Alabama. His is one of many inspiring success stories of faith and fitness that you'll hear on this "Run The Race" podcast. (2:45) Pastor Chris Cloud first chats with me about the effectiveness and encouragement from having worship before work, which is what dozens of men do every early weekday morning at a company called Abel Electric in Salem, AL. He's one of a few pastors that work for the nonprofit Abel Ministries, being a light for former convicts, construction workers, men who need second chances. (10:27) Chris shares his personal story, how he went from foster care to drug addiction to federal prison in 1998 to revival behind bars, where he really learned and practiced how to "Press In" to the things of God and totally focus on Him. He explains what that means and examples of pressing in. He reminds us...it's what we do IN the trial that defines us. He went from discipling others in prison to (23:05) working on the outside - helping men get on the right path, learn a trade to be able to get a job, but how did discernment help them vet the men in their 12 month recovery program? Getting that acceptance and seeing other men freely worship God can also be a "culture shock." (29:15) Chris' passion is raising others up to find their identity in Christ. It's about seeking HIM not things. And they're showing the community that there can be many success stories when faith is involved, these former convicts becoming positive citizens. They're celebrating those at Abel Ministries' first ever Graduation Gala for their recovery program Tuesday night October 1 at 7/6c at First Baptist Church in Opelika. To learn more about what Abel does and how you can help their growing ministry, planning to expand soon, go to https://www.abelministries.org/. (37:55) As for fitness, Chris previously competed in bodybuilding, lost weight while using drugs for a decade, then actually became a certified personal trainer while in prison. He has Biblical advice for those going through dark times, and it won't happen overnight with a "crockpot God." He now uses his redemption story to help other inmates, addicts. (49:36) And he closes out this episode with a powerful prayer. Thanks for listening to the #RunTheRace podcast, which I hope you'll subscribe to! Share it with your friends. Debate involving LGBTQ is often divisive in our nation and churches these days. This week's podcast guest is a pastor and missionary who says he formerly identified as homosexual, but an encounter with Jesus a dozen years ago set him on a new journey! He talks about his trauma growing up...that major transition, spiritually and sexually...helping churches and also others in the LGBTQ community...getting married to a woman...and ministering to people through the "Rainbow Journey" movement. After taking a quick look at what the Bible says about homosexuality and how Christians can respond to gay friends, (6:40) our guest tells his fascinating story. Gabriel Pagan explains how he was "delivered from homosexuality," as he calls it. It started with sexual trauma and bullying...led to sexual identity curiosities...being suicidal amidst the stigma of being gay and family shame...then being pursued by Jesus in his mess. What made him say he'd never sleep with another man? (25:20) For those who say they were born gay or God made them that way, why do they need to be delivered from it? Gabriel says when we're Born again, no other identities are needed or above that. No conversion therapy was needed. This now-pastor says he didn't need to pray his attractions away - they'll still come but we can deny them when Jesus meets our needs. It's choosing between our relationship with Jesus and our sexuality. HE will answer any of your questions on that. God is not mad at gay or straight people. Transitioning out of LGBTQ, Gabriel talks about the hardest thing: dealing with his emotions without an escape, instead us processing things with Jesus. Next for him came (34:55) felling in love with the woman that would be his wife. God made a lot of it happen, including the ring. Now, they have 3 sons...have been through a lot, but he says following the Lord is not easy and restoration comes (verse in Joel). (45:41) Gabriel started the "Rainbow Movement," explaining the Biblical symbolism and how we can reflect Jesus without weaponizing Scripture and without rejecting people that are gay. Part of it is equipping churches, changes that come with a cost but concerns about image can mean people continuing to struggle. Gabriel says there's more homosexual people than you think in your church congregation. He also has the "God of the Rainbow" e-course that gives people practical tools. Columbus GA native Trotter Barringer, who is now headed to Strongman nationals, gives us his regiment for the gym, nutrition, and balance with family/church life. (3:20) We talk first about how and why he transitioned from basketball and football to powerlifting then Strongman events. Trotter also had advice on strength training (for those who don't always like going to the gym). He says you can study like he did, then gotta put in the work. He's at the gym 4 days a week, for more than 12 hours total. There's plenty of sacrifice and recovery. (10:15) What about food and fuel for all those workouts? He aims to eat at least 7,000 calories per day! It isn't easy. His favorite go-to food is Mac n Cheese. (12:40) He describes what it was like winning the Georgia Strongest Man competition in his hometown, which included liftings things like 400 pound kegs and stones. You'll want to hear his top stats too for squats, deadlifts, and bench presses. Strongman competition preparation (16:12) also includes a lot of mental reps! How does he do that? And how do his coaches, wife help? Trotter also has to push through the pain, without getting injured. (22:05) Now, his oldest of 3 children, 9-year-old son is keeping in kids strongman events. There are also misconceptions about the sport, sometimes confused with body building, on stage in speedos. If he gets Top 3 at Nationals in Greenville SC September 20-21, he'll get his "pro card." The goal is eventually World's Strongest Man. Could this tall guy use his strength to maybe play in the NFL too? (29:47) Trotter also has a passion to be a man of God and pursue His will. He explains how he tries to be Christ-like in the gym, at work, and everywhere. But why powerlifting? He explains. And his favorite thing is having a max goal...and missing it! Keep improving, never be satisfied. (36:23) And this Strongman's got a few things he's focusing on heading into competition vs some of the best in the nation. I close us out in prayer. Make sure to subscribe to "Run The Race." After introducing our guest and (3:53) giving you a taste/preview of the trailer of "The Forge" - exclusively in theaters on Friday, August 23 - one of the lead actors in that project (5:43) talks about the character being made for him. The annointed movie, as Cameron Arnett calls it, also portrays the plan of God - to go out and make disciples! Is God mad at the church or empowering us? He hopes Christians and nonbelievers take positive messages from "The Forge" about being a better parent, sibling, and putting God first: https://www.theforgemovie.com/. (13:27) Arnett, who started his entertainment career in the late 1980's, has been on TV shows like NBC's Miami Vice, Fox's Star Trek: The Next Generation, ABC's Doogie Howser MD, and more. But after turning down a role that included partial nudity, secular Hollywood turned their back on him. 20+ years later, he started acting again, but this time, representing God - who Cameron says provides and lifts us up, can help you flourish and have success- to give God the Glory. (18:13) He talks some about the organized movement called "Christ Over Career" - a way of life where God wants is to be the greatest and have dominion over the Earth, without and success and fame taking us over. (19:50) Part of Arnett's fame came from his first Kendrick Brothers move "Overcomer" which he shot in my home city of Columbus GA. He talks about that experience...plus the different roles of acting, producing, directing films. After pastoring for a few decades, he hopes more Christians become famous - to be able to proclaim to more people who God is and how much He loves us! He has advice for Christians about what to do in the midst of this war in Israel. He also talks about what could happen next in the Holy Land...the relationship between Jews and Christ-followers...what it was like being a hippie rock star in the 1970's and part of the "Jesus Revolution"...plus what husbands are instructed to do for their wives, as he's written a book about. Make sure to subscribe, like "Run The Race." (4:30) After an update on news out of Israel...we hear from Pastor Victor Styrsky, who's now working at a church in Florida after 17 years helping to lead Christians United For Israel (CUFI). I went to Israel with him on a group trip a decade ago! He says many Christians are Not pro-Israel...but he explains how praying, voting, God's miracles can change things in this conflict. (10:55) There's been a war since the rebirth of the nation of Israel in 1948, but can it escalate more than from the gruesome deaths in last Fall's attack and beyond? And will America get more involved in this war? (20:01) I asked him about the differences and kinship between Christians and Jews. Victor reminds us Jews wrote most of the Bible and Jesus was Jewish. He says the separation, in part, comes from the arrogance of Christianity and man. We go through some quick history, but why is there still anti-semitism today? This associate pastor points to people being haters of God. He says we all have a lot to learn, some of that in one of the books he authored "Honest to God": https://www.amazon.com/Christian-Zionists-Confront-Questions-Answered/dp/1934440493. (38:38) This pro-Israel advocate was also a hippie rock n roller in the 1970's who had a popular touring band being focused on in a new documentary releasing next month called "Waterfall: A 70s Rock Band": https://www.harriscenter.net/waterfall. He and bandmates also became "Jesus freaks" and were part of that Jesus Revolution. (42:43) Pastor Victor has also written several books, one called "Wifecoach4men." He gives us some advice on husbands having the responsibility to cherish and nourish our wives. (49:49) Closing out the podcast, he gives dates (just a few days from now) when he believes Iran will attack Israel, and it's on holy days. He prays God will do miracles. (4:57) Spud talks about a conversation with God while at University of Southern Miss and watching Bruce Jenner in the Olympic while working at Sears prompted him to go after the eventually-boycotted 1980 Olympics. He became the 8th highest ranked decathlete in America! (12:14) Overcoming injuries and training again for the 1984 Olympics, even using steroids to do so, he got a diagnosis of deadly and dangerous testicular cancer. Fast forward to a prayer from a stranger, and doctors amazed by his healing. He fell just short of the Olympics. (22:46) Drifting from God for years, he now shares his testimony all over, also played Jesus in a big church production for almost 2 decades, and led now pastors to God. (29:15) Regrets about missing out on the Olympics? Spud also gives us his favorite and worst of the 10 decathlon events, which he focused on during almost his entire 20s in age. He also authored 2 books, explaining what one title "God If You Are Real" really means - it involves tragedy and triumph. (36:19) He's also faced depression, now focused on guarding his thoughts. (40:39) And Spud created a business called Zelosport, creating 7 board games including "finger football" that led to a national championship of that game. She takes us through the ins and outs of that immense challenge on this "Run The Race" episode, along with what she did about burnout and divorce after being a fast cross country runner in college...helping other runners...and connections with the community, the outdoors. (3:16) Cheyenne Greenside, a Washington state native, thought "Why Not?" with the epic Run Across GA, seeing fellow runners in Columbus do it. (8:00) She talks about the training and planning before the race, lots of miles and staying positive, one leg of the race at a time. She had goals for how much to run/walk each day of the event, and how much sleep (hint: it was less than 3 hours per night). What were her favorite foods? You may be surprised what she wanted on sandwiches. (17:13) In challenges, we all need tenacity! What did she do when she was exhausted, feeling broken? One breaking point for her was at mile 140, when she was panicked and sobbing, but her crew/family got her going again. There were challenges like unknown roads, horrible humidity , tendinitis, and painful chafing! Ouch. (25:25) Cheyenne also talks about those closing miles of "Run Across Georgia" and what it was like at the finish line, with so much support from cheering friends. (34:28) One of her passions is inspiring, teaching, encouraging fellow runners. She still works part-time at Big Dog Fleet Feet, where she used to be manager, continuing to push the importance of good running shoes. Worth the cost? (42:50) Going back to her days of running HS track in WA and XC at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, she tried to run faster and faster. Running became more like a job, leading her to finding new purpose through a Trans-con relay (San Francisco to NYC) to raise money for cancer, then burnout again. She has advice for when you get tired of the sport or hobby you do a lot: let it go. Cheyenne explains a little more. Running also helps with mental health. It did for her during a divorce, and she's got the tattoo for that too. She feels most at home and peace while running, loves being outdoors. (53:56) We talk about her future running goals, like a faster 50K and a few 100 milers coming soon, pushing her body to more breaking points and overcoming, like she did at Run Across Georgia. These women in Columbus GA are now being very open about their lives, with humor and honesty, in a new book and on a podcast they've been hosting for the past 4 years. (3:28) Jessica Taylor, Jenna Allen and Stephanie Gilbert are focused on breaking down walls within the church and crushing pastors wifey stereotypes. They first chat with me about the struggles and joys of being in ministry and being married to a pastor. Are they expected to be perfect? What are some wins? What pressures do they face in their marriage and church? (10:44) There are also misconceptions about church leaders like them. All 3 of these moms and pastors' wives have tattoos. Reaction to those? They want to be themselves and ultimately see the church unified! (16:49) This trio created the brand "Pastors' Wives Tell All": https://www.pastorswivestellall.com/. That's the name of their book, released this year, and podcast: https://open.spotify.com/show/4uYPezTHqopDVdwx8mA3tj. They talk about how and why they started the pod...teamwork with different gifts...being vulnerable and helping others have healing. Check them out on Instagram too. (24:14) The big message is: you are not alone. And they say the podcast is not just for people married for pastors, but anyone inside/outside the church, women, whoever doesn't feel like the fit in. And they have fun! (34:00) When I asked them about Identity... they asked, who are we without our job? And do we have to earn God's love? No. We talk about breaking down those titles to know who we are in Christ, and being grateful for where we are - including our family. (40:00) Along with some tidbits on what they do for fun and fitness...Stephanie, Jenna and Jessica describe what it was like being on TV for the 700 Club a few times and also releasing their book earlier this year! Each of them has 2-3 kids, and they're busier now with "Pastors' Wives Tell All," so being organized and saying NO to more things is crucial. What's next? They talk about a national conference they're speaking at in mid July...an Africa mission trip...retreats in other states this Fall...and a Pastors Wives cruise next year. (56:56) Stephanie closes us out in Prayer. I close the podcast in prayer. Thanks for listening to the #RunTheRace podcast! Also, write a quick review about it, on Apple podcasts. #203: Mainly Marathons Co-Race Director Inspired By Runners All Over the USA, Setting Records

Some people want to see as much as they can of America. Some people want to run marathons or other distances in all 50 states (like me). My guest for this episode of "Run The Race" helps people do both in a "loony" way. make sure to like/follow/subscribe to the podcast! (6:23) Former mental health counselor Daniel Rueckert and his brother Jesse from Minnesota are co-owners and race directors for "Mainly Marathons" - through which I've run 5 of my last 10 marathons (including some doubles you can hear about in my eps #180 and 202). He says it's exciting and exhausting to see people from all over the world in their 75 annual races in all 50 states through 13 multi-day series. Those are 14+ hour work days for them, with people taking 3-12 hours to finish marathons, no person left behind. Why do people do it this way? People can choose to walk the races...saving money on travel, doing races in multiple states the same week...encouraging, fun environment. How do they (14:22) balance work and life, being on the road 100+ days per year for these events? He explains, since they've directed close to 600 races in their 7 years as "mainly" race directors. Dreadlocked Daniel also talks about behind-the-scenes logistics like where they sleep, picking locations, measuring and getting race courses sanctioned, food and being cheerleaders. He talks about some of the WORLD RECORDS set on their courses too! Seeing these runners from all over the world (25:57), some injured or even paralyzed, achieving big things is inspiring to the Minnesota brothers who ran marathons in all 50 states together as well. Daniel also describes going from a sprinter and jumper to a long distance runner....and some of his favorite places to run and put on races. (34:07) What are the mental health and emotional benefits of running? He gives his perspectives on exercise, addiction, anxiety, as a former therapist who did walk and talk sessions. What can start as chemical dependency and feeling down with no support system...to fitness achievements building confidence, while being cheered on. As race directors, they've heard stories of personal struggles and triumphs on and off the race courses. (43:44) Some may be concerned about running becoming an addiction, but a good chunk of the back-to-back marathon runners see this as their "retirement community." It's about self-reflection too. (46:52) What's it like for them to see the USA like this? Their offices for work have some beautiful scenery. Daniel and his brother now head out for 2 series, 5Ks to marathons across 11 states in 11 days, from Delaware to Maine, starting Wednesday June 5. On this National Day of Prayer, Retired Army Corporal Josh McCart is talking about how faith in Jesus helped save and heal him after a bomb in Iraq left him without part of his arm, angry at God for years. He opens up about the darkness and what changed his life/marriage for the better. He also talks about losing a lot of weight and competing in big kickboxing competitions (yes, with one hand). Go right now and subscribe to "Run The Race" for inspiring conversations like this one about faith and fitness, (3:33) Hear the scary story about the IED blast in Baghdad in 2007 that led to his amputation and turned him into a man with no hope, after thinking he was following God's will into the Army. Why me? One chaplain told him: Why not you? (15:05) Losing his mom a decade after that bombing in Iraq prompted Josh, 275 pounds at the time, to lose at least 50 pounds. Learn how the Covid pandemic helped him find a passion for martial arts, especially Muay Thai and kickboxing. He explains those disciplines. The 39-year-old is competing against guys half his age in MMA-style matches. I asked about the disadvantages as an amputee. He also wants to live life to the fullest, to honor friends he lost in war. (24:08) Not talking to God for years after losing his arm...his prayer life came back in 2015. Josh tells the story of what happened on a solo hunt that helped him make the switch. (29:22) Now, he and his wife help other disable service couples through Samaritans Purse and "Operation Heal Our Patriots" retreats. And (37:57) how did he lose all the weight. It was moving more, but especially changing how he saw food, eating more intentionally. (41:27) Next up for Josh in the ring is the IKF (International Kickboxing federation) World Classic in Las Vegas this summer, for which he's already visualizing victory. It's to inspire others, especially his sons, but most importantly, to honor God! (45:45) Our guest this week closes us out in prayer. Thanks for listening to the #RunTheRace podcast! Some people may not think of law enforcement and fitness together, but that may be a misconception as our guest on the pod this week is one example of a police officer that's in good shape. Now, he and coworkers are about to do a relay run across the state of Georgia – which he talks about on this episode! We also discuss why he started and has continued running (even through injury)…how health and fitness can be a big part of our family and legacy…what he learned from the Army, CrossFit…and his Christian faith through dangers on the force. Make sure to subscribe to this “Run The Race” podcast. (2:37) Sgt. Dan Lyon has been on the Columbus GA police force for 21 years, ran his first and only full marathon 14 years ago about a decade after being in the US Army. Dan talks first about police, fitness and donuts – how thoese things impact their ability to do their job like chasing suspects. Now, he and 7 fellow CPD officers are doing Run Across GA, which is 277 miles from Tybee Island to Columbus over 2 days on Memorial Day Weekend. He talks about the logistics like living out of a van, running amidst the heat and hills, why they're doing it and why it's fun. Note: he's had a torn ACL for 4 years – but still runs and does CrossFit regularly, just not other sports. (13:34) During his 4 years in the Army, Dan dives into what he did as a guidon carrier, what he learned from the military about being on time, fitness and more. (16:56) What are the pros and cons now of his dangerous job as a police officer? He and the guys will also rep their police force while running across GA with the team name “Got 1 Running” – which refers to a term used on their jobs. Here's their page: https://www.classy.org/team/572806. This husband and dad (19:12) also has advice for parents about being active with your children and family. He's bonded with his daughter, now 23, through running races together. (21:37) And he tells the story about getting into running, decades ago, thanks to his sister who had not played sports. Now, he hopes to inspire other officers to run or get in shape or at least to stop drinking sodas. Dan stays away from sugar…but why? (27:22) We also talk briefly about how his Christian faith fits into his job and the dangers he faces and the gratefulness of citizens…then close out chat with more on the causes that they're raising money for through Run Across Georgia: MercyMed of Columbus and House of Heroes. It's the most popular golf tournament and one of the biggest sporting events in the world! With this episode coming out one day before The Masters 2024 tournament begins, I'm talking with a golf coach who works in the same city as that event...about golf fitness...strength and mental training for sports...his evolution from a young golfer in South Africa to a player then coach in the USA...and he give insight on hot topics about some of the biggest names at The Masters. (2:55) Augusta University (GA) Director of Golf and Men's Golf Head Coach Steven Paine and I kick it off by talking about how golfers are more athletic and stronger these days. How does that help/hurt? He has advice for amateur golfers about a few ways to strengthen your body to benefit your golf game. (9:19) Thanks to Steven's team and 14 others playing in an NCAA tournament in Augusta last weekend, all the players got to go watch the pros practice at Augusta National in the last few days. This South Africa native describes what it's like playing (and coaching) at that famous course, and the challenges it poses. (13:22) I go rapid fire with him about The Masters, with questions about reigning champ Jon Rahm...dangerous #1 Scottie Scheffler...Tiger Woods' chances...and McIlroy going after a career grand slam. Steven calls it that Rory will win in August, eventually. He also has some other insight you want to hear. Weather is also huge there and for golf, in general. Along with physical, (20:25) mental strength is paramount for golf. Steven explains how a sports psychologist helps their team - like with expectations, preparation. (24:00) How's it been for him coaching the last decade vs his career as a player? On and off the course, Steven also tries to live out his faith, which his players can see. They also are influenced by pros like Scheffler, who's outspoken about his Christian faith. (30:44) Balancing family and golf/career is also important. Your schedule matters. (33:40) Starting to play golf at age 10, Steven explains how he got a green blazer for representing South Africa as a junior...then coming to the USA where he almost led his golf team to a national championship in his first year at Columbus State University. Check out those stories and how/why he was temporarily a caddy on the PGA Tour. Steven closes out our chat with a little bit on the magic and mystery of The Masters, from unique aspects of the tournament to coaching tips and best food at Augusta.
