Send Kris and Rob a Text Message!February 18, 1949, London England. Mrs. Olive Henrietta Olivia Robarts Durand-Deacon is meeting a man at his workshop to discuss her new invention, false fingernails. What Olive doesn't know, is that the man she knew as a perfectly pressed and manicured neighbor, was actually a scam artist and serial killer who was going to murder her and put her body into a vat of sulphuric acid. Like the other wealthy victims, he'd lured with promises of business deals only to steal their assets, she was joining five other victims whose bodies were already sludge. This is a story of greed, narcissism and murder. This is John George Haigh. On February 20, 1949, police in London arrested thirty-nine-year-old John George Haigh on suspicion of his connection to Olive Durand-Deacon, a wealthy widow who'd gone missing a few days earlier. Haigh had a long criminal history of fraud and theft, so when police discovered that Haigh had recently pawned several items belonging to the missing woman, they naturally believed he had robbed and possibly killed Duran-Deacon. The truth, they soon learned, was far worse. After days of interrogation, Haigh eventually confessed to the murder of Olive Durand-Deacon, telling detectives he had drained her of her blood, which he intended to drink, then disposed of her body in a forty-five gallon barrel of acid—but she was far from the first of his victims. By the time his case went to trial, investigators had connected Haigh to six victims, all dissolved in acid, and he'd confessed to three additional murders that were unconfirmed. In his confession, Haigh claimed he'd murdered his victims in order to drink their blood; though, it's far more likely his motive was primarily greed. Nevertheless, Haigh's claim was immediately seized upon by the British tabloids, who labeled him a “vampire killer” and provided endless sensational coverage of the arrest, trial, and his eventual execution. THE TRUE CASE THIS STORY IS BASED ON: Red wine, ice cream, and a warm bath are usually ways to unwind after a long day, but in the twisted mind of John George Haigh, they became tools of terror. Born in 1909 in Yorkshire, England, Haigh was raised in a strict, ultra-religious household. His early years were marked by loneliness and nightmares, which foreshadowed his later descent into crime. After a failed marriage and several stints in jail for fraud, Haigh devised a gruesome method to dispose of his victims: sulfuric acid baths. His first known victim was his former employer, William McSwan, whom Haigh murdered and dissolved in acid. He then turned to McSwan's parents, eliminating them in the same manner to gain access to their wealth. Haigh continued his deadly spree, targeting wealthy acquaintances like Dr. Archibald Henderson and his wife, Rose, in 1948. His final victim, Olive Durand-Deacon, a wealthy widow, led to his downfall when detectives linked her disappearance to Haigh. Investigators found incriminating evidence in his workshop, including remains that survived the acid baths. Despite Haigh's claims of insanity driven by recurring nightmares, the court found him guilty on all counts. In August 1949, Haigh, known as the Acid Bath Murderer, was executed, his dark imagination and horrific crimes coming to a fitting end.SOURCES…Steven Casale, The-Line-Up.com: https://the-line-up.com/acid-bath-murderer-john-haighMurder Noir music provided by Alibi Music Library. = = = = =(Over time links seen above may become invalid, disappear, or have different content. In this repeat from one of the show's most popular episodes you are invited to join us on a stroll down the historic lanes of Stamford, where the tales of Saxon settlers and Georgian grandeur intertwine, brought to vivid life by my guest, local historian and raconteur, Bill Cunningham. As Bill peels back the layers of time, we wander from the River Welland's influence on the town's inception to the stone-crafted beauty that defines its aesthetic today. We muse over the significance of Stamford's position on the storied route from London to York, where ancient inns like The George have quenched the thirst of travelers for a millennium, and we peek into the future with The Mayors Guides, set to continue the tradition of sharing Stamford's historical riches. The architectural splendour of St George's Square serves as a backdrop for tales both inspiring and sinister; it's not just a setting for period dramas but a stage where the drama of history itself unfolded. Bill shares the gripping stories of Arnold Leese, whose love for camels and fascism painted a complex portrait of Stamford's past, and Edward Edwards, whose naval legacy is forever entwined with the Bounty's mutiny. These narratives are testament to the fact that beneath the town's resplendent facade lie stories of intrigue and the human condition in all its shades. Our journey wouldn't be complete without the chilling tales of Stamford's darker denizens, notably Thomas Bacon, whose life story reads like a Victorian gothic novel. As Bill recounts the accusations of murder and arson that followed Bacon from Stamford to London and beyond, one can't help but shiver at the grim chapters written into the town's history. Yet, the conversation isn't all gloom; we wrap up reveling in the town's architectural triumphs, void of the macabre overtones associated with characters like John George Haigh. With Bill's encyclopedic knowledge and lively banter, your appreciation for Stamford's historical and structural fabric will be irreversibly enriched. Please note error at 17.25. John George Haigh was a lazy bastard. Instead of finding gainful employment, he decided he was going to victimize wealthy people. He had gone to jail for stealing earlier in his life, and while he was in prison, he learned forgery which would help him impersonate his victims after he murdered them. He ended up killing six people before he was finally caught, and he disposed of his victims in a bath of acid, a-la "Breaking Bad" style. This week, Vee covers John Haigh, a man who claimed to have murdered 9 people in fits of vampiric bloodlust, and then dissolved their bodies in sulfuric acid. Find out what happens an overconfident and greedy conman misinterprets corpus delicti, and the how sludge, a handbag handle, and gallstones brought this callous killer to justice.
In the years following World War II, serial killer John George Haigh committed five perfect murders, using sulphuric acid to dissolve his victims into soup. His sixth murder, however, was hastily done, and led to his arrest, a trial and eventual execution. The case captivated the United Kingdom, especially when Haigh claimed he had drunk a glass of each victim's blood before disposing of their bodies. My guest is Gordon Lowe, author of "The Acid Bath Murders: The Trials and Liquidations of John George Haigh". He walks us through Lowe's murderous life and eventual death at the hands of one of Britain's most famous executioners.
