John Moon, Former Freedom House Paramedic and Retired Assistant Chief of Pittsburgh E.M.S. joins Larry and Suzie to discuss the City of Pittsburgh's 2024 Black History Month exhibit that salutes Freedom House Ambulance Service.
John Moon preaches on John 18:13-27.
In May 2020, the murder of George Floyd inspired people to take to the streets in America and overseas, calling for cop reform, the defunding of police, or saying police should be abolished altogether. And as racial injustices continued, communities took matters into their own hands. The Healing and Justice Center in Miami, FL rolled out Freedom House Mobile and Crisis Units as an alternative to people having to call police, particularly in mental health emergencies. The group draws its name and inspiration fromFreedom House in Pittsburgh, which in 1968, became the nation's first paramedics. Prior to 1968, police would transport people to the hospital during medical emergencies; but in Black communities, the result was often a disaster. Freedom House was all Black, rooted in community, and able to save lives. In a special two-part story, Into America explores Freedom House then and now; and how Black communities have always worked to keep themselves safe. On part one of ‘Don't Send the Police,' Trymaine Lee speaks with retired paramedic and health-care worker John Moon about how Freedom House began, and its lasting impact for generations to come.Follow and share the show on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, using the handle @intoamericapod.Thoughts? February marks Black History Month, an opportunity to celebrate the contributions Black Americans have made to society. And today, we're going to be celebrating that. But before that. Given the themes of this episode, we want to acknowledge the brutal murder of Tyree Nichols and the violence towards high schooler Tauris Sledge, both by police. This horrific violence only adds to the urgent call for alternatives to policing in America. And this conversation today is about imagining and realizing those alternatives. As it turns out, it's been done before, and Black Americans have always led the way. This conversation was recorded before recent events, so we don't address them directly, but we do dive into the possibility of a better vision for our country. Advocates are rightly calling for communities to slash police budgets and reinvest that funding into community health services. These calls have been met with varying degrees of buy in, with some claiming that they are too idealistic or even naive. But all we need to do is to look to Black history to prove that these naysayers are wrong. This has been done before. This is the story of our country's first ambulance service, an alternative to policing that became a model used across the country. Freedom House was founded in Pittsburgh's historically Black neighborhood, The Hill, in 1967. Back then, police were responding to all health emergencies, a service they were not effectively providing, particularly to Black communities at a time when the US was deeply segregated and reeling from the civil rights movement. Freedom House provided both life saving health care and career advancement for Hill residents who are both underserved and often overlooked by society. Here to talk with us about the Freedom House, its ongoing legacy, the importance of community based emergency response, and why alternatives to policing are both so important and so possible, are John Moon, former Freedom House EMT and retired assistant chief of Pittsburgh's Emergency Medical Service, and Brandon Buskey, director of the ACLU's Criminal Law Reform Project.

Episode 263 is John Moon and Kevin Hazzard. It was my honor to have both John and Kevin on Medic2Medic to talk about Kevin's new book Ambulance Sirens: The story of the Black Men Who Became America's First Paramedics. It was a double honor as I had a chance to catch up with John, as I worked for John when I was a young medic for the City of Pittsburgh. We talk about John's path into EMS, Freedom House, to retire as an Assistant Chief. Kevin writes a compelling story about John and Freedom House. Kevin is making his second appearance on the podcast and talks about his inspiration to write this book.

A few years before Johnny and Roy of EMERGENCY! fame, there was a group of groundbreaking EMS providers delivering ALS care to the Hill District of Pittsburgh, PA. Their story has largely gone untold, but John Moon, retired EMS Assistant Chief from Pittsburgh EMS and Freedom House Paramedic is on a mission to get the stories of these first ALS providers shared. Doctors Nancy Caroline and Peter Safar, were all part of this history, but I never knew the rest of the story of how these EMS pioneers trained "unemployables" from a underserved community into the first Paramedics. One night halfway through a graveyard shift at the hospital, orderly John Moon watched as two young men burst through the doors. They were working desperately to save a dying patient. Maybe today he wouldn't bat an eye at this scene, but in 1970 nothing about it made sense. The two men weren't doctors, and they weren't nurses. And their strange uniforms weren't hospital issued. Moon was witnessing the birth of a new profession—one that would go on to change the face of emergency medicine. The two men were some of the worlds first paramedics, and, like Moon, they were Black. This is the story of Freedom House Ambulance Service of Pittsburgh. They were the first paramedics and they changed the way we think about emergency medicine. Freedom House Ambulance Service

When we think about missionaries, there is a tendency to see them as Christians with the greatest faith and spiritual maturity. This week, John Moon, our AMI missionary and pastor in Guatemala, shares with us that missionaries are not a special class of Christian. They are just as fearful of what comes next, uncertain if they will be ready or prepared for what God calls them to. He encurages us that we can be assured that God will certainly equip us with everything we need for the good works He has planned.

Kevin and classmate John Moon have a fireside chat about GER. The calm before the storm. This a large block, and as John Moon thoughtfully points out in this episode, it is a marathon — not a sprint. At this point in your career as a medical student, you should have a sense of what works for you (in regards to studying). With that in mind, John and I discussed important topics, how to score easy points, and how to balance GER and pre-dedicated Step 1 studying.

John Moon, NEADS’ Director of Programs and Communications , describes the organization’s efforts to improve the lives of the hearing impaired and the disabled with service dogs. Started in 1974, NEADS provides specialized training depending on a recipient’s circumstances, such as for hurricane alerts in some parts of the U.S. Service dogs are trained to assist wounded veterans, those with spinal cord injuries, autistic children, and more. Pups begin training at 8 weeks and are selected for temperament as well as intelligence. Inmates from several correctional facilities in the northeast volunteer to train NEADS service dogs, and over the years NEADS’ specialists have matched dogs and owners with 99% success. Vests labeled “service assist dog” are placed on service dogs, giving them the legal right to enter public buildings and vehicles where other dogs (such as therapy dogs or comfort dogs) are not permitted. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/radiorotary/support
