// ABOUT ANDY MILNE AND UNISON A fearless, versatile explorer as a pianist and composer, Andy Milne has been a distinct and respected voice at the heart of New York's creative jazz scene for almost 30 years, collaborating with dancers, visual artists, poets and musicians spanning jazz, classical, pop, folk, and world music. At the piano, he skillfully blends poetic gravitas with a playful sense of order. He has recorded and toured throughout the world with Ravi Coltrane, Ralph Alessi, Carlos Ward and Carla Cook, and has collaborated with a range of artists including Andrew Cyrille, Sekou Sundiata, Avery Brooks, Bruce Cockburn, Fred Hersch, Ben Monder, Dianne Reeves, Jen Shyu, Tyshawn Sorey and Jamie Baum. A former student of Oscar Peterson, Milne was at the center of the M-BASE Collective as a core member of saxophonist Steve Coleman's bands, as well as performing with Cassandra Wilson and Greg Osby. Milne composed and produced the scores for seven documentary films by acclaimed director William Shatner and has now released eleven recordings as a leader or co-leader. Milne is presently an assistant professor of music at the University of Michigan in their Department of Jazz & Contemporary Improvisation. Originally from New Orleans, John Hébert, has been a highly sought-after New York bassist since the mid-1990s. A former student of Rufus Reid, he has collaborated extensively with pianists Fred Hersch and Andrew Hill, appearing on celebrated recordings from each pianist. He has also performed with Lee Konitz, Paul Bley, John Abercrombie, Kenny Wheeler, Paul Motian, Uri Caine, Bill Stewart, Mary Halvorson, Tomasz Stanko, David Liebman, and Toots Thielemans, among many others. An accomplished bandleader, Hébert's 2015 Sunnyside release Rambling Confessions — his quartet featuring Milne — received critical acclaim, including 4.5 stars from Downbeat. Over the past decade, he has been named multiple times as a “Rising Star Acoustic Bassist” in Downbeat's Critics Poll and has received multiple GRAMMY Award nominations. Hébert is a full-time professor of bass at Western Michigan University. Clarence Penn is one of the most in-demand jazz drummers in the world. A composer, bandleader, and prolific producer, he performs regularly with Maria Schneider, Dave Douglas and Uri Caine. Since 1991 when he arrived in New York City, Penn has placed his unique blend of mega-chops, keen intellect, and heady musicianship at the service of a staggering array of A-list artists including Ellis and Wynton Marsalis, Betty Carter, Stanley Clarke, Steps Ahead, Makoto Ozone and Michael Brecker. His impressive discography includes several hundred studio albums, including GRAMMY Award-winning recordings from Randy Brecker and Maria Schneider, representing a 360-degree spectrum of jazz expression. He has toured extensively throughout the United States, the Americas, Europe, Japan, and Southeast Asia, as well as composed music for films and commercials, and produced tracks for numerous singers in the pop and alternative arenas. #andymilne #junoawardwinner #jazz
Andy Milne's outstanding career spans a wide breadth from collaborating among the elite of North American creative music, to being an accomplished film scorer and educator. I originally spoke with Andy in early 2020 in advance of his tour for his then newly released trio album The reMission. That canceled tour has been rescheduled, now two years later, but much has happened with the trio Andy Milne and Unison in that time. Most notably the album won a Juno award in 2021 for Jazz Album of the Year in the Group category.Although two years have passed, much of our conversation is still relevant and brimming with insight into the world of Andy Milne.A note about the audio for this episode: This interview was recorded as a reference to be transcribed during the period when the Showbiz Roundup was a blog. As such, the fidelity is not as high as we've come to expect from this program, and contains a small amount of background noise.

When it comes to kindness, it is the one thing that has been helping me through the six lockdowns so far in Victoria. It's helped bring some much-needed purpose and joy into my days when I have felt lost and deflated. That being said, today's guest is seriously one of the kindest people I have ever had the pleasure of connecting with. Andy Milne is a living, breathing human kindness machine. Today's show has a straightforward goal, and that's to hopefully give you some inspiration and ideas on how you can make one person's day better with an act of kindness this week. Andy is such a beautiful human, and I am so excited to share him with you for the second time. To listen to Andy's full story, you can grab that on episode #144. Also, to reach out and see all the epic work he is doing, you can do so here https://slowchathealth.com/
Just turn on, press record, and play.At about the halfway point in our interview, John casually mentions that he just received word that a record he's on, “The ReMission”, led by pianist Andy Milne with drummer Clarence Penn, had just won a Juno (the Canadian Grammy). Fact is, John himself has been named several times in the Downbeat Critic's Poll, as a bassist and leader, and has become over the last decade one of the most sought-after jazz bassists in NYC. He's an incredibly expressive and open musician, having played with Lee Konitz, Fred Hersch, Andrew Hill, Toots Thielemans, Maria Schneider, and tons more. AND, he approached our duets in an obvious yet brilliant way that no one previously had attempted (a mini-“Big Noise” milestone). His story stretches from New Orleans to New York, with a wild, musical stop under the New Jersey Turnpike that's for all to see and hear on YouTube. Once you check that out, I'm fairly sure an Hébert rabbit hole binge will follow.

The jazz/metal crossover can take many forms, but in the case of Kenny Grohowski, that overlap is clear and overt. Growing up as a serious fusion head, this NYC-via-Miami drummer went on to study jazz at the New School and play with established artists such as Lonnie Plaxico and Andy Milne. Metal was a later discovery for him, but as of 2019, Grohowski is now fully immersed in that scene. He regularly performs and records with the outlandish, eclectic Imperial Triumphant, as well as Simulacrum, a trio masterminded by John Zorn that draws on Grohowski's entire skill set. Kenny and I spoke about how hearing Meshuggah helped him get over his fusion snobbery, the unique "swing" of metal, the anatomy of a Zorn session, how he's able to make his blastbeats breathe and much more.
Dear Teacher, When you got your first job, did you get the most undesirable position in your department or grade level? What about passed up for a position because the other applicant had more seniority? Have you presented ideas at meeting only to get shot down? If this sounds like you, I’ll wager that you have looked at your situation and wondered, “Am I valued?” There were many times in my career when I have shared my ideas because I thought they would make the situation at my school better. I would get one of several responses. Sometimes, I was Ignored, but this was rare. Usually I was acknowledged for the idea on the spot, but that's as far as it went--when there was no follow-up, I suspected they did not place much worth in my words. Other times, I was flat out told "no" and given the kinds of reasons that led me to believe that they wanted to maintain the status quo. Our guest for this episode of Dear Teacher, Don't Give Up! is National Health Teacher of the Year, Andy Milne. He's a teacher at the top of his game! Outside of his teaching duties, he also runs the website slowchathealth.com and is a sought after public speaker. And though he presents as very "put together," he'll be the first to tell you that things weren't always that way for him. For a time, he questioned whether he was a good fit for the job. Seven years into the job, feeling undervalued at the school where he was teaching at the time, he walked away. And that time away gave him the perspective he needed. He eventually made his way back to the classroom, and he has some great perspective to share about his journey. If you find yourself in similar circumstances, or you would like some perspective from an experienced teacher, you can reach out to Andy in the following ways: Website: slowchathealth.com Email: milnea@nths.net Twitter: @CarmelHealth Ways to Connect: Also, if you have a story to tell, about a time you considered walking away from education, I want to hear all about it.
