On this week's episode of the Baked-In podcast presented by Busey Bank, Josh had the distinct pleasure of sitting down with world renown inspirational speaker, podcaster and best-selling author John O'Leary. John just wrapped on the film adaptation of his 2016 book - On Fire: The 7 Choices to Ignite a Radically Inspired Life. The movie will tell the story of O'Leary, who was burned on 100% of his body at age nine in a house fire. While this conversation could have gone in a million different directions, they spent the time together discussing the challenges of bringing this movie to the starting line and especially to St. Louis, the on-set culture John helped to foster with his daily presence and the lessons learned on set that had nothing to do with movie making. His infectious positivity is incredibly inspiring. As a 9-year-old, Missouri native John O'Leary was nearly killed while playing with fire. Burned on 100 percent of his body with 89 percent covered in third-degree burns, John was not expected to live the first night.  But then something happened, call it a miracle. Through the power of countless people all striving to keep John alive, not to mention the well wishes from near and far, including President Ronald Reagan, Pope John Paul II, sports announcer Jack Buck, NHL star Gino Cavallini and the entire St. Louis Blues hockey team, John pulled through.  But that's just John's origin story. John survived, but he felt lost trying to fit in. Throughout his youth, he would try to be like everyone else by taking big risks, whether physical feats, drinking, or other extreme behavior. "Anything someone else would do I would do even bigger and better to prove that I was ordinary," he said. "I wasn't chiseled, I was bandaged. I was just raft with lies and a mask."  At age 28 while working construction, John was asked to share the story of how he was burned — and he said "yes" for the first time. So, he spoke to a Girl Scout troop of three.  "I did a lousy job. I was not even paid with a box of Samoas," he joked.  But one of the girl's fathers asked John to speak at his Rotary Club. That grew to another speaking gig and then more and more speaking engagements, not to mention two books, including the Number 1 bestseller, "On Fire, The Seven Choices to Ignite a Radically Inspired Life," which has sold 250,000 copies and been translated into 12 languages. "I'm not afraid of the scars anymore," John said. "By saying 'yes' to others, I began to realize the dignity of my own story." Over the years, John has spoken publicly 2,500 times and reached several million people to reveal "what happens when we allow ourselves to be used for something bigger than ourselves."  I am so inspired by John, not only because of the great baseball stories he shares about Jack Buck and the dozens of signed baseballs he received, but also because John embodies the principles of faith, healing, and dedication to purpose.  John shares his story and the lessons he's learned in this week's episode of Chiseled. If you'd like to reach John, you can do so on one of his two websites, JohnOLearyInspires.com and readinawe.com, which will also give you the opportunity to take the 21-day challenge to spark inspiration, meaning, and joy. Childhood trauma can really impact how we show up as mothers.Even if you've done a lot of work on it, the memory and wound is there. Part of the motherload includes combating these unconscious behaviors, patterns, and beliefs that play out in our lives — some of which we're aware of, some not.Today I'm with my friend Jaymie Gerena, a transformational strategist, master NLP practitioner, and mother of three children. She's a survivor of child abuse and sexual and physical abuse and has been featured in many publications for her work helping women heal trauma and grow soul-aligned businesses. In this episode, Jaymie and I discuss finding identity after abuse – for her it involved consciously approaching life and motherhood with a sense of building safety instead of hypervigilance – and approaching controversial topics within our families. This conversation is so important because when we're rooted in our identities as mothers, it's easier to hold space for uncomfortable conversations and be confident in our beliefs – which consequently makes us better versions of ourselves, too.In this episode you'll hear about:Jaymie's background: her traumatic childhood; losing her father and brother due to drugs and gang violence, respectively; and becoming a mom at age 20How Tony Robbins and personal development changed her life – and how that ultimately affected how she parented, tooJaymie's advice: make a list of where you want to be and where you are now; then, figure out how to fill the gaps to get to that version of your future selfBeing the victor instead of the victim and CHOOSING what to take forward, what to leave behind; what matters is how we move forwardTaking audits of our days and relying on intuition in our choices as parents vs. researching different points of view against what we innately feelPracticing being uncomfortable and holding safe places to have hard conversations with other mothers, whether they agree with you or notResources & LinksDid this episode resonate with you? In this episode, Steve talks with Chris Gardner, President of FMF&E Wealth Management in Syracuse, New York.  Chris was fortunate enough to begin his career in the investment space, managing big money at an early age. Eventually,  Chris craved meaning beyond numbers and after a failed business attempt, he moved from Boston back to New York in 2001. Back in New York, Chris joined an IRA and has not looked back since. While he's always loved working with people, it took a personal tragedy for Chris to realize the power of getting vulnerable with clients. At the end of the day, he believes this business has nothing to do with pie charts and projection graphs, and everything to do with building relationships with clients based on trust.  Chris talks with Steve about the power of encouraging clients to tell their own stories, the best ways to address client concerns, and how advisors can stop wasting time on things that don't matter.  “I see our job of getting things down to a bite-sized level for people. I mean the highest level of mastery I think would be simplicity, right? So if we can get people to really get some feel for what direction they're going in, then we get a chance of building trust with them and then we get a chance at having a lifelong client.” ~ Chris Gardner, CFP Main Takeaways  Spend more time listening to your client than speaking at them. Listening to your client helps you understand where they're coming from which, in turn, helps you become a champion for them.  There's always an emotional question behind a numbers question. When you're vulnerable with clients, they're encouraged to act the same way. That vulnerability helps you address the root cause of their questions. Work with people who share similar values. When you care about the same things as your clients, serving them becomes much easier.  The business of financial advising is a business based on human behavior. To succeed, advisors need to understand empathy. That empathy is something that can never be replaced by robo-advisors.  Links and Important Mentions Chris on LinkedIn FMF&E Wealth Management A Very Personal Finance Story by Chris Gardner CEG Worldwide On Fire: The 7 Choices to Ignite a Radically Inspired Life by John O'Leary Bill Bachrach George Kinder Building a StoryBrand: Clarify Your Message So Customers Will Listen by Donald Miller Subscribe and Stay in Touch Apple Podcasts Spotify Steve on LinkedIn Follow Buckingham Strategic Partners on Twitter

If there is one skill to master in life, it is selling. Why? Because no matter what you do, whether you are a product designer, an executive, an entrepreneur, or a preacher, if you develop the ability to sell your idea, your vision, your strategy, or your product/service, the sky is the limit. And more than merely selling, ultimately, mastery of selling comes when you develop the ability to be of service while selling. What does it mean to be of service while selling? It means that you authentically listen for people's concerns (whether in the foreground or background) and align on resolving it (if possible) within the context of your work/offering. That’s what John O’Leary -- #1 National best selling author, inspirational speaker, and top podcast host -- does and as he puts it, his job is to serve.  John's life journey has been everything but easy though.  At the age of 9 years old, 100 percent of his body was burned in a terrible fire. John was given a 1 percent chance to live but after a 5-month hospital stay, dozens of surgeries, and the amputation of all of his fingers, he pulled through. Today, John is the best-selling author of On Fire: The 7 choices to ignite a radically inspired life that sold upwards of 120,000 copies and was translated into more than 12 languages, as well as most recently In Awe: Rediscover your childlike wonder to unleash inspiration, meaning and joy. If you've ever struggled, had self-doubt, felt trapped, at a dead-end, or like your life wasn't igniting, then do we have the show for you. Today I'll be talking with John O'Leary, one of my all-time heroes, both him and his mom, though I just heard about him a few weeks ago. He is the author of the future New York Times Best-Seller, "On Fire: The 7 Choices to Ignite a Radically Inspired Life", and one of the most inspirational people I have ever had the pleasure to have on the show. Today we'll talk about John's miraculous journey, one that should have killed him, and instead helped mold him into the person he is today. We'll talk about going through our own fires in life, flipping the ignition, learning to burn, and out of the fire, creating something more beautiful than we ever could have imagined. That plus we'll talk about the world's greatest mom, accumulating baseballs, Phra Phuttha Maha Suwan Patimakon and what that means, and why in the world, you'd want someone to get in a hockey brawl for you.   Key Points Discussed: What is a milkshake promise? What happened to John when he was 9. How the experience became a true blessing in John's life. How his older brother Jim changed and became a state hero (lifesaver of the year for Missouri) How his sisters Amy and Sarah became true hero's as well. Why he asked his sister for a knife so he could kill himself How his seven-year-old sister risked her life (3 times!) to save her brother John. What his mom told him he credits with saving his life What his mom says when he asks if he's going to die How do we light our internal flame? What we can learn from Robin Williams. How do we turn our lives around? What you can do to ensure that tomorrow is better than today Journals ‘why me' in the morning and in the evening ‘what can I do to ensure that tomorrow is even better than today? What Big Roy had to do to him, to keep the scars from pulling him into the fetal position How do you become extraordinary??? “We have to forget everything we've learned and realize we are BORN extraordinary!!!” The importance of asking ‘why do you choose to thrive?” Why his story with his Dad, Denny will be a second book. Who was Glenn Cunningham – and how did he help hundreds if not thousands of kids. Can you tell us about the announcer Jack Buck, the voice of the Cardinals? How John O'Leary day at the ballpark took place How you can make a huge difference in someone else's life – simply! How Gino Cavallini got in a hockey brawl on John's behalf. Why he wanted his book to be a guide to waking up from Accidental life.   Additional Resources: www.JohnOlearyInspires.com   …….   For free meditations, weekly tips, stories, and similar shows visit: www.InspireNationShow.com   To support the show and get even more great tools, tips, and behind-the-scenes access, visit: www.Patreon.com/InspireNation   And to follow Inspire Nation (and the lives of Michael and Jessica) on Instagram, go to www.instagram.com/inspirenationlive

In 1987, John O’Leary was a curious nine-year-old boy. Playing with fire and gasoline, John created a massive explosion in his home and was burned on 100% of his body. He was given 1% chance to live. This episode will challenge you to ask yourself, "What more can I do?" as the legendary Hall of Fame announcer, Jack Buck, asked himself after seeing John in the hospital for the first time and fearing that he would not see him again. You will not want to miss this as John takes us through his mindset and the importance of faith in overcoming adversity and trauma, including how to use it in a manner that brings out the best version of ourselves. You will learn why John finds it so important to journal on a daily basis and a simple question to help you start. This epic story of survival was first showcased in his parents’ book, Overwhelming Odds, in 2006. Originally printing 200 copies for friends and family, his parents have sold 70,000 copies, most in back-of-room sales at John’s speaking events. It was this book that first invited John to embrace his miraculous recovery and share it with the world. John inspires nearly 75,000 people at 100+ events each year. He speaks to companies and organizations across industries, such as: sales, healthcare, business, safety, marketing, financial services, faith, education and insurance. John’s first book ON FIRE: The 7 Choices to Ignite a Radically Inspired Life was an instant #1 National Bestseller; 120,000 copieshave sold and it has beentranslated into 12 languages. I'm really grateful for all of the guests that come on our show, but the individual that you're about to hear today is somebody that I have been really excited about, and trying to get on this show for over two years. I'm so honored to have him with us today.John O'Leary is a #1 national bestselling author and speaker. He inspires over 75,000 people at over 100 events each year. He speaks to companies and organizations across industries such as sales, healthcare, business safety, marketing, financial services, faith, education, and insurance. One of the things that John has also done is created his first book, On Fire: The 7 Choices to Ignite a Radically Inspired Life. This was an instant #1 bestseller. Over 120,000 copies have been sold, and it's been translated into twelve languages. His Live Inspired podcast ranks in the top 20 on iTunes, and his online community is over 200,000 strong. You'll notice that I didn't mention anything about John's background within this introduction; that's because his story is so powerful that I can't wait for you to hear it yourself from him. “Discover what your life is ultimately about, and what really matters, and then you encourage and guide and shepherd as many other people as possible to climb, to rise, and to cross that bridge with you.”   John's major tip to radically improve your life:  shift from being a victim to being a victor.      Ask yourself this question every morning: “why me?” Instead of asking it as a victim to the circumstance, ask it as a victor over it, and it will influence the way you view your life . It will transform what you think, how you feel, the actions you take, and the results you get. The Biggest Helping: Today's Most Important Takeaway   You are worthy. Your life, your profession, your retirement - you are worthy. Start there. Act like it. You have a future that is even bigger and better than you can fathom right now. Open your eyes, your mind, and your heart a little bit more to that possibility. Have a little bit of faith. Children have it naturally, and we start to lose it. Grab onto that possibility that is robustly and vibrantly still present within you and in front of you. Be intentional. Ask questions like, “why me,” in the morning, before you start your day. Ask a question like, “what more can I do,” at the end of each day to make tomorrow even better than today. Lastly: have a mission that guides you forward toward something bigger than yourself. With a compelling enough “why,” not only can you move through fire, but you can climb mountains, you can overcome the insurmountable, and you can free countless individuals to do likewise in their own lives. --   Thank you for joining us on The Daily Helping with Dr. Shuster. Magazine, business podcast – and highly sought-after speaker. John was badly burnt on 100% of his body and should have died. Today he says if he could go back, he’d let it all happen as it did. In this show we got to talking about many of us...maybe most...being at a handicap because we HAVEN’T had a significant tragedy happen to us that keeps us from taking life and time for granted. We fall into inactivity and what John has coined “accidental living”. It’s a very convicting discussion folks. Sometimes we want to discount someone who we think had a benefit we didn’t. Well, having a gas can blow you up as a kid, JOhn feels may just be that...a benefit. The point is not to go blow yourself up. It’s to realize that you may be allowing comfort and ease to steal your glory. Which begs the question of...what to do about it. Well, listen in the the show and hear what John has to say. You've probably heard of CrossFit, but my world champion guest today takes it to another level. Michael Cazayoux is CEO of brUTE Strength Training, which teaches people how to train to become a world champion CrossFitter. By the way, Michael is a two-time world champion for CrossFit. With his team, he won the CrossFit Affiliate World Cup Championship in 2012 and 2013. But when he started CrossFit, he was getting last place in his classes every day. “I'm not a freak athlete that walked into the gym and was crushing everybody,” he tells me in this episode. Michael says he believes any average person can become more if they put in the time and effort, a mentality that applies in fitness, business, and life. I talk to Michael about what you can do to get in shape quickly and stay in shape. We go over some of the techniques he's used to increase his physical, mental, and emotional fitness. His fitness, you could say, crosses multiple areas of his life. The key sticking point to get in shape, he says, is to get into a solid routine. A routine helps you trust yourself more and builds confidence. If you feel like business has taken out of you the desire to remain physically fit, listen up. If you would like to work out more but feel like you don't have time, this episode's for you. And if you find yourself slipping on fitness goals you set for yourself, Michael has something you need to hear. Click play on the player above to begin. Listen to this episode to hear Michael Cazayoux, CrossFit world champion and CEO of Brute Strength Training, tell how to get in shape quickly and effectively and more: Overcoming drug addiction to become a world champion. Sports performance psychology and the link to failed fitness resolutions. How many minutes per day you should work into your routine for fitness. (It's not as many as you may think necessary.) Why you should pay attention to your personality type when setting up your diet and exercise routines. Goal-setting that won't make you feel like giving up too soon. Today's guest is a comedian, author, speaker, huge over-comer and a new, dear friend of mine. She has been through more challenges and misadventures than most, but exemplifies more grace, forgiveness, courage and perseverance than anyone I have ever met. You've likely never heard of her but after our time together, I am certain you will never forget her! Kathy Buckley will share her story in such a way that you will be ready to live more inspired than ever before! My favorite takeaways from our time together: Nobody is in this world with nothing to give. We all have something to give. You can learn more about someone by being fully present with them than by listening to the words they are speaking (she's learned this truth through her lifelong hearing loss). Appreciate who you are and forget about being defined by others. These truths were also shared in her book, If You Could See What I Hear. I loved this book and absolutely devoured it. Order Kathy's book If You Could See What I Hear here. Check out Kathy on the comedy stage here.  The LIVE INSPIRED 7 segment is a series of 7 questions, shared "rapid fire" and answered boldly (without prep!) by our guests. My hope is to leave you reflecting on our guest's answers and YOUR answers... and excited to apply ideas from today's show to help you live an inspired life.  Kathy Buckley's Live Inspired 7 1. What is the best book you ever read? Your book! ON FIRE: The 7 Choices to Ignite a Radically Inspired Life. 2. Tomorrow you discover your wealthy uncle shockingly dies at the age of 103; leaving you millions. What would you do? I don't need much. My needs are covered and my wants are few, so to me money is to provide for others. I volunteer with deaf and hard-of-hearing children through a theater program. I would expand this program to help give a better understanding to more communities.   3. Your house is on fire, all living things and people are out. You have the opportunity to run in and grab one item. What would it be? Everybody is out of my house? An item. I'm not attached to anything! I guess my insurance paperwork.  4. You are sitting on a bench overlooking a gorgeous beach. You have the opportunity to have a long conversation with anyone living or dead. Who would it be? Jesus. I would ask him how could he was so committed. How could he have had that faith. Faith is a powerful thing to bless yourself with and I just have such admiration for him. He was there for those who were less fortunate.  5. What is the best advice you've ever received? My uncle: fear knocked upon my door, faith answered it and no one was there. Which means fear and anxiety are human created, but when you have faith: you can trust and believe that all good things are there for you to receive. 6. Looking back, what advice would you give yourself at age 20? I'm sorry I didn't love you like I should have loved you. I probably would just put my arms around her and let her know she was loved.  7. It's been said that all great people can have their lives summed up in one sentence. How do you want yours to read? Kathy loved unconditionally, anyone who crossed her path.   *** If you enjoyed today's episode, subscribe, rate and review this podcast on iTunes and anywhere you get your podcasts! The Bible says “Pride goes before destruction…” And my guest today learned this lesson the hard way—after having sunk into a deep depression that was ironically spurred by his own achievements. Jack Lannom is a prolific author and the CEO of People First International. His company devotes itself to creating caring company cultures. But Jack himself had forgotten to care. At a time he was rewarded for tremendous hard work with spectacular success, he got too wrapped up in himself. He lost his humility. Jack tells me that all the signs of hubris and ego showed up in his life. In his words, he became a prisoner of his own self-importance. Soon after, he fell into a deep depression that hospitalized him and changed his world. “Don't get caught up in pride and press clippings.” @PeopleFirstIntl via @RustyLionAcad Getting ego out of the way and beating depression Nowadays, Jack has learned to care enough about others that he'll talk to anyone and everyone about their dreams. With more caring behind his conversations, he has come to counsel billionaires going through the same kind of success depression he himself faced. That's a far cry from his egotistical heyday, when his conversations with others invariably revolved around himself. To find out how Jack shifted his life so monumentally and beat the depression that followed his success, listen to this episode. You'll come to know an extraordinary man now intent on making other men extraordinary too. Listen to this episode to hear me speak with Jack Lannom about beating depression caused by success and more: A pyramid of the five most important things you can say to other people. The seven keys to trust. Why being promoted in the same circles as big names like Zig Ziglar and John Maxwell made Jack a prisoner. How a year of deep depression improved Jack's life. The time Jack realized he didn't know the author of his own books. The unspoken caste system in the U.S. Why sanity is a gift from God. Advice for beating a bad day. Read these books to help beat success depression, self-centeredness, and more: “How to Win Friends & Influence People,” by Dale Carnegie “The Big Leap: Conquer Your Hidden Fear and Take Life to the Next Level,” by Gay Hendricks, PhD “Psycho-Cybernetics,” by Maxwell Maltz “On Fire: The 7 Choices to Ignite a Radically Inspired Life,” by John O'Leary “Untapped Potential: Turning Ordinary People into Extraordinary Performers,” by Jack Lannom “People First: Achieving Balance in an Unbalanced World,” by Jack Lannom Do this next to accomplish anything – including beating depression: I know it sounds cliché, but you can do anything you put your mind to. “I never once looked back. I just wanted to pretend like I was ordinary, that I was normal. That was the great goal of my life, to be normal.” — John O’Leary John O’Leary was a normal nine-year-old boy when he was burned on 100% his body in a house fire and given no chance of survival. Five months in the hospital and thirty surgeries later, which included the amputation of his fingers, John strived to live an ordinary life until his parents shared his story with the world and changed his life. Brian Buffini interviews John O’Leary and finds out why the most important job in the hospital is the janitor, the most important trait all humans should cultivate and how a troop of Girl Scouts prompted John to change careers and share his story with the world. Listen to John’s message of hope and get ready to be inspired! Inspirational soundbites from today’s interview: “I think everybody’s got a story; just generally not the one we’re telling the world.” “We are called daily to become a better version of ourselves.” “I looked up at my mom and said, ‘Mom, am I gonna die?’ I assumed she would say no…and Mom gave me truth. She holds my hand a little bit more firmly, she looks me in the eyes and she says ‘Baby, look at me. Do you want to die? It’s your choice, it’s not mine.’” “On that morning, it was January 17, 1987, a child of 9, flanked by his father and his mother, made the covenant to fight on, having no clue what the 18th of January might look like or the 19th, or the first surgery or the thirtieth. All we knew on day one was the fight was on.” “Significance is allowing the ripple effects of our talents and time and treasure to ripple out into the marketplace.” “Ultimately what our prayers should be is not that our prayers are answered; it’s that we live into His will for our lives.” “Embrace the gift of the moment.”   Learn more about John’s story: Overwhelming Odds by Susan O’Leary and Denny O’Leary http://johnolearyinspires.com/shop/overwhelming-odds-book/ On Fire: The 7 Choices to Ignite a Radically Inspired Life by John O’Leary. http://johnolearyinspires.com/shop/fire-7-choices-ignite-radically-inspired-life/ John O’Leary-Motivational Speaker, Reunion with Nurse Roy https://youtu.be/aeVmrWRFOPk Connect with John O’Leary John O’Leary Live Inspired http://johnolearyinspires.com/ Facebook https://www.facebook.com/JohnOLearyRisingAbove Twitter https://twitter.com/jolearyinspires   Connect with Brian Buffini http://www.brianbuffini.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/brianbuffini Twitter: https://twitter.com/brianbuffini Buffini Show Insiders: http://www.thebrianbuffinishow.com/insiders Love what you heard?
