Capsule Review: Whether you're a fan of the originl Hunger Game's trilogy, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is a dark and violent descent into villiany you didn't know you needed. Suzanne Collins (finally) showcases her understanding of dystopian hellscapes. And this adaptation proves it by turning what could feel like a needless return to Panem into a stunningly lush, brutal, and well-crafted tale of how easy it is to abandon "the good" in pursuit of safety. It's a grim reminder that often, cruelty is the point. Watching a young Coriolanus Snow (Tom Blyth) navigate the ruthless intruge of a post-war Capitol is a brilliant allegory for how the scramble for power ultimately makes spectacles of us all. Photo Credit: Murray Close Return to The Hunger Games, the landmark film franchise that has earned over $3 billion globally, with Lionsgate's adaptation of Suzanne Collins' #1 New York Times Bestseller The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Years before he would become the tyrannical President of Panem, 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow (Tom Blyth) is the last hope for his fading lineage, a once-proud family that has fallen from grace in a post-war Capitol. With the 10th annual Hunger Games fast approaching, the young Snow is alarmed when he is assigned to mentor Lucy Gray Baird (Rachel Zegler), the girl tribute from impoverished District 12. But, after Lucy Gray commands all of Panem's attention by defiantly singing during the reaping ceremony, Snow thinks he might be able to turn the odds in their favor. Uniting their instincts for showmanship and newfound political savvy, Snow and Lucy Gray's race against time to survive will ultimately reveal who is a songbird, and who is a snake. We also talk about the Disney influence on the film, particularly around character and toy design. Our collective rating adds up to: 6 thumbs up The French Dispatch: Wes Anderson's latest film, with a plethora of brilliant actors. We discuss the balance of humour, pretentiousness and how Wes Anderson this new Wes Anderson film is. We talk mostly about the performances of Jared Leto, Lady Gaga, Adam Driver, Al Pacino and Jeremy Irons. We reference Ridley Scott's previous film The Last Duel (2021) and its similarities. Our collective rating adds up to: 2 thumbs up and 1 thumb down The Matrix: Resurrections: We discuss our general enjoyment of the film, with each of us falling in different points of the spectrum. Our collective rating adds up to: 2 thumbs up and 2 thumbs down The Power of the Dog: Jane Campion's return to the big screen, after two seasons of Top of the Lake (2013-2017), her last film being the fantastic Bright Star (2009). We discuss the fantastic cast, including Kodi Smit-McPhee, Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst and Jesse Plemons. We discuss the tension in the film, in connection to Quentin Tarantino and Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood (2019).
