featured Wiki of the Day

fWotD Episode 2869: Pulgasari Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Thursday, 13 March 2025 is Pulgasari.Pulgasari is an epic monster film directed and produced by Shin Sang-ok in 1985 during his North Korean abduction. A co-production between North Korea, Japan, and China, it is supposedly a remake of Bulgasari, a 1962 South Korean film that also depicts Bulgasari/Pulgasari, a creature from Korean folklore. The ensemble cast includes Chang Sŏnhŭi, Ham Kisŏp, Ri Chongguk, Ri Ingwŏn, and Yu Kyŏngae, with Kenpachiro Satsuma in the title role. Set during the Goryeo dynasty, Pulgasari follows a blacksmith's daughter who brings to life a metal-eating monster her late father created to defeat the monarchy.Shin and his wife, Choi Eun-hee, were kidnapped in 1978 by agents of Kim Jong Il, and held captive in North Korea. Pulgasari was put forward in February 1985 to capitalize on the success of The Return of Godzilla (1984), and became Shin's last film made under Kim Jong Il's orders. Kim Seryun and Ri Chun-gu collaborated on the screenplay. Principal photography took place in Pyongyang from June to August 1985 on an estimated ¥200–300 million ($2–3 million) budget, making it one of the most expensive films ever produced in North Korea to that time. Some sources suggest that North Korean filmmaker Chong Gon-jo, who was given sole director credit, completed filming on behalf of Shin. A team of 15 Toho employees, including Teruyoshi Nakano, handled special effects photography from September to December.Pulgasari was previewed at Toho Studios in January 1986 and readied for release in Japan and North Korea later that year. However, the film was banned in March after Shin and Choi escaped North Korean supervision and fled to the United States, where Shin later worked on a remake. Pulgasari eventually debuted on VHS in Japan on January 21, 1995, and had its official premiere in Tokyo on July 4, 1998, to commercial success. Critical reception in Japan was positive, with many favorable comparisons to Godzilla (1998). It has since become the most-widely-seen North Korean film internationally and a cult classic. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:12 UTC on Thursday, 13 March 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Pulgasari on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm generative Kajal.

Earlier this month, Toho Studios released “Godzilla Minus One”—the 37th film in the now almost seven-decade-old franchise. Godzilla has gone through many phases over the past 70 years: symbol of Japan's nuclear fears, cuddly defender of humanity, Japanese cultural icon and, now, the centerpiece of another Hollywood cinematic universe. But it was 1954's Godzilla that launched the whole thing, with a story written by Japanese author Shigeru Kayama. He also wrote a novelization for the movie and its sequel Godzilla Raids Again (University of Minnesota Press: 2023), both translated by Jeffrey Angles. In this interview, Jeffrey and I talk about these novels, how they differ from the movies, and how they start Godzilla's journey to becoming a cultural icon. S2E2 Psychedelic Kaiju w/ War of the Gargantuas (1966) & Matango (1963) Kevin Moss from the Junk Food Dinner podcast joins Cory and Bob for the most wigged-out Japanese monster movies ever to come out of Toho Studios. First, it's the good Brown Gargantua vs. the evil Green Gargantua in a battle of land and sea elemental forces in the appropriately titled WAR OF THE GARGANTUAS (1966), an epic that rattled the minds of everyone from Guillermo del Toro to Tim Burton to friggin' Brad Pitt (who gushed about it once during The Oscars). It's also a favorite of Mark Mothersbaugh of DEVO, who used to close out their set with "The Words Get Stuck in My Throat," the baffling-yet-catchy pop song that's ruined by Green Gargantua in the middle of the movie. Watch for it. The Gargantuas are about half the size of Godzilla or Rodan, and they don't have tails, so they move fast and hurl tanks like they're baseballs. Starring a decidedly unimpressed Russ Tamblyn from the original WEST SIDE STORY and the lovely Kumi Mizuno. Things get even weirder with our second feature, MATANGO (1963) aka ATTACK OF THE MUSHROOM PEOPLE. Seven stranded castaways (or maybe a few more) are shipwrecked on an island where the only thing to eat are mutated mushrooms with the power to transform you into creepy toadstool creatures. It's kaiju meets full-on body horror. Kumi Mizuno is back for this one along with Yoshio Tsuchiya and Akira Kubo. Both of our films also feature the artistry of Gojira director Ishiro Honda and special effects wizard Eiji Tsuburaya, which makes Honda the most featured director on OLD MOVIES FOR YOUNG STONERS of all time, since we profiled his ALL MONSTERS ATTACK (1969) in Season One, Episode Six. We haven't even done Orson Welles or Fritz Lang movies yet, but we've featured three Ishiro Honda movies. Priorities! Big thanks to Kevin Moss for joining us. His indispensable JUNK FOOD DINNER podcast is streaming on Apple Podcasts and your favorite podcast app. You can learn more about it at junkfooddinner.com. All of Bob's Ishiro Honda knowledge in this ep comes from the excellent book, "Ishiro Honda: A Life in Film from Godzilla to Kurosawa" by Steve Ryfle and Ed Godziszewski. Bob purchased the book from MZS.press, the bookstore run by movie and TV critic Matt Zoller Seitz out of his home. Highly recommended. This is it! We're finally talking about the King - King Kong that is! The big ape has been one of Hollywood's (and the world's) biggest stars since he first showed up on the scene in 1933. At the time, the original King Kong was cutting edge, and it influenced many later generations. Kong is a part of pop culture, and new versions of the eighth wonder of the world keep getting made. There is something universally appealing about this unique and powerful figure. We'll go through the long history of Kong in films (and a little bit on TV), starting of course with the classic original 1933 King Kong, directed and produced by Merian C. Cooper and Ernest Schoedsack, with ground-breaking stop-motion effects by pioneer Willis O'Brien. The exciting story, the ferocious  Kong, and the whole beauty and the beast angle, made the film a huge success. It was quickly followed up with a sequel, also in 1933, Son of Kong, which was amusing but no where near the success of the original. In the 60s, through a somewhat circuitous route, Kong wound up across the Pacific and got a job with Toho Studios, making King Kong vs Godzilla in 1962, and King Kong Escapes in 1967. There's a connection to the 1966 Rankin-Bass King Kong Show cartoon too!Near to our hearts, even though it's clearly a flawed film, is the 1976 version of King Kong. The film may be best remembered today for the amazing John Berkey poster showing Kong astride the World Trade Center towers. We'll talk about the controversy over the robot Kong and how the great make-up genius Rick Baker played Kong. Bob took the hit for the team and watched King Kong Lives, and gives a rundown of that sequel. If you're excited to hear what we think about Peter Jackson's 2005 remake of King Kong, well, you may want to ratchet back your expectations. We have some strong opinions on the film, and that's all we'll say here! Finally, we finish strong as we enthusiastically discuss Kong Skull Island (2017), which took a very different approach to Kong, and will lead to a rematch with Godzilla next year!Larry's Kong and Bruce mugs, seen front and backOn this episode's Sensor Sweep, our mission commander, Larry, shares his love of tiki mugs, and shows off two: a Bruce the Shark from Jaws mug from Mondo, and a Kong mug from Tiki Farm. First up: the little-remembered American prison-escape melodrama Runaway Train, starring Academy Award winner Jon Voight in his most colorful performance outside of Anaconda; followed by an even bigger character - Toho Studios original kaiju in his building-stomping debut: 1954's horror masterpiece, Gojira - renamed (and recut) in the United States as 'Godzilla, King of the Monsters!' What could these movies have in common? Akira Kurosawa, of course! Join us as we dig deep into how both countries faced their postwar anxieties through pop art!

Najważniejsze omawiane filmy: Gojira (1954), reż: Ishiro Honda; scenariusz: Takeo Murata i Ishiro Honda, z Shigeru Kayama; w rolach głównych: Akira Takarada, Momoko Kochi, Akihiko Hirata, Takashi Shimura; prod. Damian: The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951), klasyk amerykańskiego kina sci-fi lat 50.-tych, w którym zwaśnione ziemskie narody muszą spełnić pacyfistyczne żądania przybysza z kosmosu albo zostać unicestwione. This week on End Credits things are going to get meta. What happens when you take the story of the world's greatest superhero and make him a bad guy? We'll find out when we watch Brightburn. Speaking of bad guys, we'll talk about Hollywood's battle against new abortion laws,  and the lost meaning of Godzilla. Also, we'll also discuss being Booksmart and what Harrison Ford is mad about now.  This Wednesday, June 5, at 2 pm, Adam A. Donaldson and Candice Lepage will discuss: Georgia on Our Minds. Many U.S. states have passed new, draconian bills aimed at eliminating abortion, and one of them is Georgia. Why does this matter? Well, this year 455 Hollywood movies and TV series will be shooting in that state, and the (mostly) liberal talent behind those films might decide they don't want to work there anymore. So is Y'allywood in trouble? Keep Away From This Jones. During an interview with the Today show, Harrison Ford said that when he dies, so does his most iconic character, Indiana Jones. No one can play the globetrotting archeologist but Ford, despite rumours to the contrary. But is this vanity, or is Ford drawing a line in the sand that there's still a limit to how much you can franchise? Monster Mash. Speaking of franchises, Godzilla: King of the Monsters is now in theatres everywhere, the latest part of the so-called "Monsters-verse." But in trying to turn Godzilla into an expanded universe, have we lost the original point of the monstrous character, who was created by Toho Studios as a response to the two atomic bombings of Japan in 1945? Buy the Book. Olivia Wilde's Booksmart has gotten rave reviews, but it only came in sixth place at the box office. Despite opening the same weekend as the juggernaut Aladdin, and behind other big movies like Avengers and John Wick, some critics see this as a failure, and proof that there's no room for small films anymore at the multiplex. But is that true? REVIEW: Brightburn (2019). You know the story: a kindly farm couple in Kansas find a spaceship from another world and its one passenger, a little boy they raise as their son. But what if that boy didn't grow up to be the greatest superhero there ever was? What if Superman decided to give into temptation and use his powers to do very, very bad things? So yes, Brightburn is Superman gone bad, and their will definitely be gore. End Credits is on CFRU 93.3 fm and cfru.ca Wednesday at 2 pm.

In The Queue - Film Conversations with Andrew and Phil

This episode is a must-listen for Andrew's passionately eloquent rant in support of intelligent junk films. The new "Godzilla" is the latest heir to a cinematic franchise begun by Toho Studios in Japan in 1954 (the year they also released "Seven Samurai"!).  If you are in line to see "Godzilla" it means you are probably interested in watching mass destruction and monsters doing battle at the expense of San Francisco.  Andrew would argue that there is a deeper reason to catch a monster movie.  What is the threat in this new reboot?  While the original Japanese film had to do with atomic bomb anxiety writ large, what is the subtext for Gareth Edwards' new Hollywood remake? These questions are important to Andrew.  On the other hand, Phil doesn't need to have dimension in a Godzilla movie.  He enjoys watching the mayhem as long as it is well realized.  Do you have high standards for your "Godzilla"?
