Aaron Alexander & Andrew Gordon sit down to review The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes (2023), the prequel in Suzanne Collins' blockbuster YA dystopian saga. Directed by Francis Lawrence (Catching Fire, Mockingjay) and adapted by Michael Lesslie & Michael Arndt, the film takes us 64 years before Katniss Everdeen's time, exploring the origins of President Coriolanus Snow (Tom Blyth – Billy the Kid), when he's still a mentor in Panem and seeking to restore his family's lost prestige. Standout moments include Snow and Lucy Gray's performances in reaping ceremonies, the provocative “snake pit” element in the Games, and the tension-filled scenes that show Snow's moral decay—especially his final acts as he begins to embrace power at any cost. With lush cinematography, ethical dilemmas, and emotional character arcs, Songbirds & Snakes offers both spectacle and introspection, casting a dark light on how one young man transforms into the tyrant Panem would come to fear. Want to write a great screenplay? Little Miss Sunshine writer Michael Arndt shares secrets from Pixar, Hollywood, and a decade of script doctoring! What We Discuss with Michael Arndt: Success in screenwriting often requires extreme persistence and resilience — Michael Arndt wrote 10 screenplays over 10 years before selling Little Miss Sunshine, and even then did about 100 drafts of that script before it was ready. The best stories often create a "tilted universe" where the protagonist is a response to or antidote to the negative values of their world (like Robin Hood emerging in response to an unjust system, or The Dude's laid-back nature contrasting with an aggressive world in The Big Lebowski). Audience feedback is crucial but challenging to balance — as Michael quotes Billy Wilder: "Individually they're idiots, but collectively they're a genius." You have to respect audience intelligence while still maintaining your creative vision. Great endings often work by creating a false binary (win/lose) and then revealing a surprising third option that exceeds audience expectations — like in Little Miss Sunshine where Olive neither wins nor loses but creates something entirely unexpected. Anyone can improve their storytelling by studying great stories and breaking them down systematically — Michael's own journey shows that storytelling is a craft that can be learned through careful analysis, practice, and continual refinement of understanding how stories work. His video essays on screenwriting (available on YouTube) offer concrete tools for developing these skills. And much more... Nadien volgde een Q&A. Bo Sels capteerde en monteerde het hele gesprek tot deze fraaie podcast. Enjoy!
It's the Little Movie That Could of 2006, “Little Miss Sunshine”! It shined at the Oscars, including a frankly totally deserved Best Supporting Actress nomination for Abigail Breslin and equally wholly deserved wins for Michael Arndt's screenplay and Alan Arkin as dirty grandpa. But there's also the way Toni Collette eats that popsicle and Greg Kinnear dealing with a kinky cop and Steve Carell and Paul Dano's misanthropic uncle and son making a connection on a pier before Olive's truly iconic dance routine. The movie is also riddled with featured ensemble standouts, from Linda to Kirby to Pam, and that score that just makes us want to do what we love and fuck the rest. We talk about lava, character wounds, and emotional storytelling ALL THE TIME on the show, but it's important to remember: there's more to good storytelling than an emotionally juicy character. Today, Oscar-winner (and friend-of-the-show) Michael Arndt discusses this, along with trends he is noticing in the evolving world of 21st century cinema. Little Miss Sunshine is a 2006 American tragicomedy road movie directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris (in their directorial debut) from a screenplay written by Michael Arndt. The film stars an ensemble cast consisting of Greg Kinnear, Steve Carell, Toni Collette, Paul Dano, Abigail Breslin, and Alan Arkin, all of whom play members of a dysfunctional family taking the youngest (Breslin) to compete in a child beauty pageant.
In our final episode of 2023, Michael Arndt – the acclaimed writer of films like Little Miss Sunshine and Star Wars: The Force Awakens – drops by for a two-hour dissection of his script for Toy Story 3 –a Pixar sequel that went to infinity and beyond when it came to thrills, laughter and emotion. Directed by past Script Apart guest Lee Unkrich, the 2010 film could have repeated the formula that made past the franchise's previous films a global phenomenon, making instant icons out of Woody, Buzz and their found-family of fellow play-things. Instead, it leapt forward in time to find Andy, the toys' owner, all-grown up and about to head to college, heaping huge existential questions on fans' beloved characters. If a toy is retired to an attic, never to be played with again, what is their reason to be? What does it mean to be outgrown by people you love, who no longer love you in return? If that sounds heavy for what is ostensibly a kids' tale, wait till we remind you that Toy Story 3 was a movie set mostly in a brutal toy internment camp that ends with our heroes about to be incinerated. That boldness is why many regard the film as being “peak Pixar” – and can you blame them? Toy Story 3 capped a remarkable run of hits for the animation studio that included Ratatouille in 2007, Wall-E in 2008 and Up in 2009. No wonder Michael and co felt emboldened to take risks on this third instalment of the franchise – risks that reaped incredible storytelling rewards.Michael was picked by Pixar – presumably via email or a phone call, rather than a giant mechanical claw like the ones in Pizza Planet – because few storytellers do grounded emotion and dysfunctional families like he does. At the onset of his career, across three days in May 2000, he'd written a screenplay about a family on a road trip to New Mexico that became a monster hit. Little Miss Sunshine earned the Virginia-born screenwriter a Best Original Screenplay Oscar in 2006 and catapulted him onto the radar of Pixar, whose brain trust would soon begin cooking up a story for a third movie in their Toy Story franchise. In the conversation you're about to hear, Michael breaks down the many early iterations of this movie, including an abandoned Toy Story 3 from before his time on the project, in which the toys travel to Taiwan after Buzz is shipped there following a global product recall on the toy. We get into the machinations of Lotso Huggin' Bear, how the story is deep down one about parenthood and of course, that traumatising moment our heroes hold hands, staring down certain death. To prepare for his upcoming appearance on our show, TSL is proud to rebroadcast a classic, Michael Ardnt's Act 1 Masterclass. Little Miss Sunshine's script, written by our guest Michael Arndt, won almost every major industry award, and for good reason. Its warmth, humor, and surefooted commitment to its themes makes it one of the finest scripts written this century. And SO many of those themes show up in Act 1. Michael has become a bit "obsessed" with act 1's lately, because it's our chance to maximize the "rooting interest" around our hero so that our audience has no choice but to keep watching.

With the 10th annual Hunger Games fast approaching, the young Snow is alarmed when he is assigned to mentor Lucy Gray Baird (Rachel Zegler), the girl tribute from impoverished District 12. But, after Lucy Gray commands all of Panem's attention by defiantly singing during the reaping ceremony, Snow thinks he might be able to turn the odds in their favor. Hi, I'm Mark Cecil host of The Thoughtful Bro. I want to tell you about the podcast I'm launching. See, a long time ago I realized that the greatest thing on the face of the earth, at least to me, is storytelling. Storytelling is everywhere. It's in how we understand our planet, our country, our own bodies. Stories determine how we decide to vote, who to marry, what to eat, whether to fight a war, and quite simply, why to get out of bed in the morning. Stories don't just reflect our world. They actively create it. Storytelling is so fascinating to me, in fact, that pretty much my ideal social scenario is to go to a party, bump into a writer who's just put out a book, then whisk them away to a corner and spend the next 45 minutes or so, asking them about how and why they told the story that they did. That 45 minute download is, in essence, the Thoughtful Bro podcast. Every episode I'll spend time talking to a world class writer. I'll speak to award winning authors like George Saunders, Erik Larson, Jennifer Egan, and Mitch Albom. You'll hear from writers who've had their books turned into blockbuster TV shows and movies viewed by tens of millions of people: writers like Caroline Kepnes, whose books became the Netflix series "You," and Emily St. John Mandel, whose novel became the HBO show "Station Eleven." I'll talk to writers involved in current events, like Lt. Colonel Alexander Vindman, who had a key role in Trump's first impeachment; and Former NATO Supreme Allied Commander Admiral James Stavridis, who recently tried his hand at fiction. I'll even talk to some of the most successful screenwriters working today—people like Michael Arndt, who wrote "Little Miss Sunshine" and "Toy Story 3," and David Koepp, who wrote "Jurassic Park," "Mission Impossible," and "Carlito's Way." Together, these are some of the most innovative and decorated storytellers to be found anywhere. They've won the Pulitzer Prize, The Man Booker Prize, The MacAurthur Genius Grant, the Academy Award and more. My interviews are wide ranging, fast moving, deep delving, and, I hope, entertaining. Think of the it as "Inside the Actors Studio"—but for storytellers. Oh, and one last thing. What about the name? The Thoughtful Bro? Well, that's me of course. As it turns out, being thoughtful and being bro-ish kind of go together like, say…a dinner jacket and a baseball hat. Like bourbon and Banksy. The first two episodes of The Thoughtful Bro will be dropping very soon. I hope you'll subscribe and check it out. In the meantime, stay thoughtful.
Kenny and Mike continue a series looking at Christ Figures in Film with the 2006 Film Little Miss Sunshine. The film won 2 Oscars, Alan Arkin for supporting actor and Michael Arndt for Screenplay. Ten-year-old Abigail Breslin also received a Supporting Actress nomination for her portrayal of Olive. Faith Spotted: The ten-year-old daughter in a very dysfunctional family, Olive (Peace Bringer) serves as the Christ figure as she is the source of reconciliation for the family members. While in great conflict with one another and angry at life and the hurdles life presents, the pure, and innocent love Olive has for life and others inspires the family members to work together for her behalf.

You love road trips, we love road trips, everyone loves road trips, right? Well not the Hoover family, as they pack it into their VW Microbus and travel from New Mexico to California in 2006's Little Miss Sunshine. Richard (Greg Kinnear), Sheryl (Toni Collette), Dwayne (Paul Dano), and Grandpa (Alan Arkin), and Olive (Abigail Breslin) are the Hoovers, a modest family with a penchant for the dramatic. After Sheryl's brother Frank (Carell) tries to kill himself following a personal and professional tragedy, the Hoovers agree to take him in. But when Olive learns that she is a finalist in the Little Miss Sunshine pageant, the entire family knows they have to do what it takes to get her there to let her live her dreams. Alan Arkin and writer Michael Arndt won Oscars for their efforts, and Little Miss Sunshine went on to make over $100M on an $8M budget. But does it hold up? Listen as Jon, Colin and Brent debate micro-dosing with heroin and creepy as fuck child pageants as they see if this movie deserves a first-place prize, or if it should be left in the trunk wrapped in a sheet until we can figure out what to do with the rest of our lives.
