We are wrapping up Big Fish/Small Pond month with Sweet Home Alabama – a movie that could've been charming if it wasn't for the overarching hugely problematic parts – we get into it (as much as two white girls from Canada can) in the episode – plus some swooning and appropriate Melanie Lynskey love. Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson are the creators, showrunners, writers, and executive producers of the hit Showtime drama series, YELLOWJACKETS. YELLOWJACKETS, equal parts survival epic, psychological horror story and coming-of-age drama, is the saga of a team of wildly talented high school girls soccer players who become the (un)lucky survivors of a plane crash deep in the remote northern wilderness. The series chronicles their descent from a complicated but thriving team to savage clans, while also tracking the lives they've attempted to piece back together nearly 25 years later, proving that the past is never really past and what began out in the wilderness is far from over. YELLOWJACKETS stars Emmy Award-nominee Melanie Lynskey, Tawny Cypress, and Emmy Award-nominee Christina Ricci. In this interview, we talk about the pros and cons of working as a writing partnership, the challenges and rewards of writing original content versus writing for existing shows, what they look for when hiring writers for their staff, the specific difficulties of writing a show with two timelines, and much more. This week, we're taking aim at SERIAL SLAYER (a.k.a. CLAUSTROPHOBIA, 2003), a tense little thriller that proves broad daylight won't save you when there's a crossbow-wielding psycho perched on the roof. Three coworkers—Melanie Lynskey (before she was cool on YELLOWJACKETS), Sheeri Rappaport (CSI), and Mary Lynn Rajskub (24)—find themselves trapped in a house while a silent, unseen killer picks them off one by one. No phones, no way out, and no idea who's next. Horror fans, take note: Judith O'Dea (NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD) makes a cameo! Because if anyone knows how to handle relentless terror, it's her. Is this indie thriller a forgotten gem or just another early 2000s curiosity? Tune in as we break it down, discuss the kills, and decide if crossbows should be banned from horror movies forever.
Rose Red is the rare mini-series that Stephen King wrote directly for the screen and is essentially his stab at playing in Shirley Jackson's Hill House sandbox. With a wild cast that includes both Nancy Travis and Julian Sands and Melanie Lynskey and a story that feels like a Greatest Stephen King Hits compilation, Rose Red is a fascinating one to look back on.
This week on The Treatment, Elvis speaks with Pulitzer Prize winning playwright David Mamet — whose newest project is the film adaptation of his own 2023 play Henry Johnson. Then, director David Cronenberg stops by to talk about his latest film The Shrouds. And on The Treat, actress Melanie Lynskey celebrates a director whose collaborative process with actors is legendary.

Welcome to Director Watch! On this AwardsWatch podcast, co-hosts Ryan McQuade and Jay Ledbetter attempt to breakdown, analyze, and ultimately, get inside the mind of some of cinema's greatest auteurs. In doing so, they will look at their filmographies, explore what drives them artistically and what makes their decision making process so fascinating. Add in a few silly tangents and a fun game at the end of the episode and you've got yourself a podcast we truly hope you love. On episode 97 of the Director Watch Podcast, the boys are joined by film critic Jesse Nussman to discuss the next film in their Peter Jackson series, Heavenly Creatures (1994). After making a name for himself as a horror director, Jackson took a different route for his next film, incorporating his genre sensibilities for a drama about a real life murder case in New Zealand. Centered around two young girls who become friends and a tight bond that is threatened by their parents, who find it stranger than your average friendship. In an attempt to be with each other forever, the two girls come up with a plan to run away, and in doing so, commit a heinous crime that shocked the entire country. By tackling this subject, Jackson was able to embody a magical realism to the entire film, particularly in the imaginative world the girls have built for each other, and in doing so, created a one of a kind bio-pic that is haunting and heartbreaking. Ryan, Jay, and Jesse breakdown their thoughts on the film, if running away was a good plan, the murder weapon used in the crime, the breakout performances for Melanie Lynskey and Kate Winslet as well as the different paths each actress took, Jackson's imagery in the dream world, if the extended cut adds anything new to the story, and how hard it is to find this film on streaming and physical media. You can listen to the Director Watch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 2h20m. The guys will be back next week to continue their series on the films of Peter Jackson with a review of his next film, The Frighteners. You can rent it via iTunes and Amazon Prime rental in preparation for the next episode of Director Watch. Till then, let's get into it. Music: MUSICALIFE, from Pond5 (intro) and “B-3” from BoxCat Games Nameless: The Hackers RPG Soundtrack (outro).
Jodie and Andrea are kicking off our new movie series with Heavenly Creatures, not just Melanie Lynskey's film debut, but a true crime story that's full of themes that Yellowjackets keeps circling: queerness, violence, fantasy, and the messy emotional world of teenage girls. It's also directly referenced in the show's original pitch deck, making it the perfect place to start.Next week, we're diving into Richard Donner's 1985 coming-of-age adventure classic The Goonies. It shows up in Season 3, and while it might seem like a big shift from Heavenly Creatures, at its core, it's a story about intense young bonds, kids chasing escape, and the ways adults shape the world around them. So if you ignore the brutal real-life murder, it's really not that far off.Recommended Reading:“Let's Moider Mother: Heavenly Creatures and the Politics of Delusion” by Betty Jay“Heavenly Creatures Is a Queer Adolescent Nightmare” by Drew Burnett GregoryIf you're reading this, that means you've probably got your podcatcher of choice open right now. [Editor's Note: The following contains spoilers for Yellowjackets, Season 3, Episode 3, "Dislocation."]Raise your hand if you judged Callie way too soon during Season 1 of Yellowjackets. Callie is the only teenager in the present day timeline, and she often acts like it. She's moody, rarely listens to her parents and, in Season 1, Episode 5, crossed a major line by wearing Jackie's (Ella Purnell) Yellowjackets jersey as a Halloween costume. Sure, one could label that bratty, if not cruel behavior, but as Sarah Desjardins pointed out during her Collider Ladies Night interview, we can't forget that Callie is a child, and she's a child that's been subjected to quite a few head-spinning and disturbing situations courtesy of her parents' (Melanie Lynskey and Warren Kole) twisted past and present. While Callie appears to be keeping it somewhat cool at the start of Season 3, there's no doubt there's a lot bubbling up underneath because, as Jeff explains, Callie just witnessed her mother's friends wearing animal masks chasing her through the woods with knives, she shot one of them, and then saw Natalie (Juliette Lewis) die. Sure, they arrived at Lottie's (Simone Kessell) wellness center with “five Dateline's worth of problems,” but the problems they added to that list while there changed the game big time for Callie. In the first few episodes of Season 3, we start to get a sense of how. With the first three episodes of Yellowjackets Season 3 now available to stream on Paramount+, Desjardins swung by the Collider Ladies Night studio to explain how she took the character from a seemingly stereotypical bratty teenager, to a highly determined - and often manipulative - young adult who's been heavily shaped by her mother's mysterious past and will stop at nothing to get answers. Showtime's Yellowjackets is really two shows in one. One is about a group of '90s teenage plane crash survivors, and the other follows them now. The trick is finding that balance between the actors playing the same characters. “Casting just did an excellent job. They found people with similar essences,” says Jasmin Savoy Brown, who plays the younger version of Taissa. “If anyone has a harder job, it's [Tawny Cypress, who plays Taissa's older self], because technically, she has to play to who her younger person is, me.” Brown admits it's “intimidating” to have the modern-day characters played by greats like Cypress, Christina Ricci, Juliette Lewis and Melanie Lynskey. “All of them make it so easy. There's no one that's snobby or diva or rude.” And Brown, who can also be seen in the upcoming Scream 7—“I'm really honored to be playing the first out queer character in that franchise's history”—is most aware how special this moment is. “I'm really grateful, I get to work with people who've been doing this for a long time, and all of them happen to be really kind.” See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

The Trump administration anticipates approximately 200,000 federal workers will participate in the deferred resignation program. CBS News has learned that more than 40,000 employees already have. Meanwhile, nearly all 10,000 USAID employees will be put on leave on Friday. Palestinians and Israelis are reacting to President Trump's proposal for the U.S. to develop the Gaza Strip amid Israel's ceasefire with Hamas. While some, like Israel's defense minister, have praised Trump's proposal, many oppose the idea. CBS News' Chris Livesay has more. Residents in Dearborn, Michigan, near Detroit, are reacting to President Trump's comments about "taking over" the Gaza Strip. Dearborn has the highest percentage of Arab Americans of any U.S. city. In 2024, more voters cast a ballot for Trump than Kamala Harris in the historically democratic city. President Trump's efforts to shutter the humanitarian agency, USAID, could have drastic impacts on places like war-torn Sudan. The stoppage could mean less medicine for the sick, fewer first responders and more famine. Warning, the images in this story are graphic. About 2,000 law enforcement officers will monitor New Orleans this week with the Super Bowl between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs set for Sunday. The surge in security comes just one month after the New Year's terror attack on Bourbon Street. Listen in to a very special episode of Conversations with Alan featuring award-winning author Heather Morris who joined me from Brisbane, Australia.Heather dropped by to discuss her New York Times Bestselling book, The Tattooist of Auschwitz, which has sold over 13 million copies worldwide since its release in 2018, and the Peacock series of the same name that premiered in May 2024. The series stars Harvey Keitel as Lale Sokolov and Melanie Lynskey as Heather.Heather first met Lale in December 2003, shortly after his wife had passed away. She was told by a friend, that he had a story worth telling, leading to many days spent with the tattooist of Auschwitz-Birkenau. Lale's life was forever changed the day he looked into the eyes of a young girl as he tattooed her left arm, and she tattooed her love into his heart. What Heather received from Lale was a love story set against the backdrop of the Holocaust. The possibility of survival for these lovers was slim, but prisoners 32407 and 4562 did survive. They endured a place etched in history as a Dante-esque circle of hell, survived a death march, were separated and reunited, married, and lived happily in Melbourne, Australia, for 58 years. The Tattooist of Auschwitz is the story of Lale and Gita.In 2018, Heather visited Auschwitz/Birkenau, an experience that profoundly deepened her understanding of the stories she had heard from Lale.Don't miss this chance to hear first hand from Heather to learn how meeting Lale changed her life and how the dream they shared of seeing his story on screen was realized this year.

“Lisa the Drama Queen” (January 25, 2009) So here's an interesting one. In its twentieth season, The Simpson did an episode inspired by Heavenly Creatures, the 1994 Peter Jackson movie that has Kate Winslet and Melanie Lynskey playing schoolgirls who flee into a fantasy world and also each other. More than a decade later, this story would play out again, only with Lisa Simpson and a new character voiced by Emily Blunt, and that might seem like a strange combo, especially because the Simpson version nixes the sex and violence of the original, but it nonetheless works. Special thanks to the writer of this episode, Brian Kelley, for sharing his memories of how this episode came to be. For a limited time, you can still screen Heavenly Creatures via the GEE Patreon, but that window is closing. Info here. Rose Red is Stephen King's take on Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House, made exclusively for a TV mini-series in the early 2000s. Ghosts, psychics, greedy professors desperate to prove the existence of ghosts and the afterlife, Jimmi Simpson being a creepy weirdo, prune-faced entities, Melanie Lynskey being awesome, this series has it all!
