[Editor's Note: The following contains spoilers for Thunderbolts*.]One of the very best parts of having a returning guest on Collider Ladies Night? Realizing how much they've accomplished during such a short period of time. Geraldine Viswanathan made her first Ladies Night appearance in 2020 for The Broken Hearts Gallery and since has completed a four-season run on Miracle Workers, starred opposite Zach Galifianakis, Elizabeth Banks and Sarah Snook in The Beanie Bubble, headlined Drive-Away Dolls with Margaret Qualley, made Oh, Hi! with Molly Gordon which secured distribution out of Sundance 2025, and now she's part of one of the biggest film franchises of all time, the Marvel Cinematic Universe.Viswanathan makes her first MCU appearance as Mel in Thunderbolts*. She's Valentina Allegra de Fontaine's (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) extremely attentive and diligent assistant. Initially, she seems quite loyal too, but when Bucky (Sebastian Stan) suggests Mel secretly slip him information on Val in hopes of having her impeached, eventually, Mel concedes. While that choice may suggest Mel's willingness to double-cross her boss, ultimately, she changes course again, pushing the button that saves Val's life from the Sentry (Lewis Pullman). So where does Mel stand? Does she skew more villain than hero? Does she still admire Valentina? That's exactly what I dug into with Viswanathan during her second Collider Ladies Night interview. Hosted on Acast. The second MCU film of the year - Thunderbolts* - has now arrived theaters globally. To be perfectly frank, I was never super excited about this movie prior to the marketing. I was excited by the initial announcement of a Thunderbolts film and Jake Schreier's involvement as director but was quite thrown off by the initial cast announcement. While the Thunderbolts were never really Marvel Comics team that I gravitated towards, I did like a lot of the usual characters included... and seemingly almost none of them were going to be a part of the movie squad. This choice continued a very awkward trend of the MCU trying to distance itself from the very media that allowed it to exist in the first place. I have to say though, props to the marketing team. By the time I was stepping into the theater, I was PUMPED to finally be seeing Thunderbolts*. Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, it is the 36th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The film was directed by Jake Schreier from a screenplay by Eric Pearson and Joanna Calo, and stars an ensemble cast featuring Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, Wyatt Russell, Olga Kurylenko, Lewis Pullman, Geraldine Viswanathan, David Harbour, Hannah John-Kamen, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. In the film, a group of antiheroes are caught in a deadly trap and forced to work together on a dangerous mission.Marvel Studios first teased the formation of a Thunderbolts team within the MCU in 2021. The film was revealed to be in development in June 2022, when Schreier and Pearson were attached. The main cast was revealed in September, with additional casting through early 2023. Lee Sung Jin joined to rewrite the script by March 2023, one of several creatives who returned to work with Schreier from the Netflix series Beef (2023–present). Production was delayed due to the 2023 Hollywood labor disputes, causing some cast changes in early 2024. Calo joined by then for further rewrites. Filming took place from February to June 2024 at Trilith Studios and Atlanta Metro Studios in Atlanta, Georgia, and also on location in Utah and Kuala Lumpur.Thunderbolts* premiered on April 22, 2025, at the Empire Leicester Square in London, England, and is scheduled to be released in the United States on May 2, as the final film of Phase Five of the MCU. On this week's episode of The Discourse, host Mike DeAngelo sits down with Nicholas Stoller, the filmmaker behind "You're Cordially Invited," a star-packed wedding comedy hitting Prime Video on January 30. Stoller, the mind behind "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" and "Neighbors," returns with another laugh-out-loud project, this time revolving around two weddings that are double-booked at the same venue. Will Ferrell steps in as the devoted (and increasingly unhinged) father of one bride, while Reese Witherspoon plays the protective, take-no-prisoners sister of the other? As expected, wedding warfare and chaos ensue. Rounding out the ensemble are Geraldine Viswanathan, Meredith Hagner, Jimmy Tatro, Rory Scovel, and Leanne Morgan. With wedding comedies being a well-worn path sub-genre in films —"The Wedding Singer," "Bridesmaids," "Wedding Crashers"—Nick Stoller had no intention of simply rehashing old formulas. In fact, he didn't even think of it as a “wedding movie” at first. “I just thought [Will and Reese] would have great chemistry together,” Stoller explained. “I've always been obsessed with Will, but I was also obsessed with Reese and really wanted to see her do a hard comedy again. She's just so funny.”

On this episode of Paid in Puke, we analyze Susanna Fogel's 2023 thriller, Cat Person based on the 2017 short by Kristen Roupenian, and adapted for the screen by Michelle Ashford, who was the showrunner for Masters of Sex, but most importantly, wrote the teleplay to the abortion episode of 21 Jump Street. The film stars Emilia Jones, Geraldine Viswanathan, Hope Davis, Isabella Rossellini, and Nicholas Braun. We all had very different feelings about this film, both from our initial watch together in the theater, and after our analytical watches for the pod. Journey with us as we discuss how heavy-handed a metaphor we can tolerate; why Fogel might have tried a bit too hard to cater to a male audience, at the film's expense; the surprisingly problematic element of the source material; and how Nicholas Braun perfected towing the line between awkward and creepy.  Plus: Did Harrison Ford ruin a generation of men?

As you'll hear in this edition of Collider Ladies Night, Beanie Feldstein is a favorite. She's a hugely talented individual, with a deep passion for the craft of acting who heavily values the opportunity to create with good people. There's no doubt a good deal of that was in her from the start, but in revisiting her filmography in celebration of the release of her latest film, Drive-Away Dolls, it becomes abundantly clear that Feldstein is able to stand tall, deliver big and use her voice to change this industry for the better because she's been well encouraged and supported by some of the best out there.Feldstein plays Sukie Shankleman in Tricia Cooke and Ethan Cohen's Drive-Away Dolls. Fresh out of a relationship with Margaret Qualley's Jamie, Sukie is on the warpath. She's a no-nonsense cop who isn't about to let Jamie get away with breaking her heart. When Jamie and Geraldine Viswanathan's Marian get mixed up with some criminals while road tripping to Tallahassee, Sukie has no problem giving the goons the information they need to put them hot on Jamie and Marian's trail.Collider Ladies Night interviews are meant to be career-spanning conversations touching on as many titles as possible. In Feldstein's case, however, the interview often came back to one specific film, which is a beautiful thing. Feldstein told me, “Lady Bird changed my whole life and career.”Check out what Feldstein told me about working with Greta Gerwig on her feature directorial debut, collaborating with "one of the single most brilliant people I've ever been around," Sarah Paulson, making Drive-Away Dolls with Margaret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan, and loads more on this edition of Collider Ladies Night! The movie Drive-Away Dolls is a shaggy comedy about a couple of lesbian friends (Margaret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan) who take a road trip and unwittingly find themselves wrapped up in a bizarre criminal caper. There's a strange briefcase, a shady senator, and psychedelic vibes, which makes for one weird little movie. The movie directed by Ethan Coen, who co-wrote the screenplay with Tricia Cooke.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
