Sams Disney Diary

It was another packed night on our weekly live show, and this one pulled from just about every corner of Disney fandom. We got into the latest Disney news out of CinemaCon, the newly announced Star Wars Celebration 2027 details, the ongoing Rock 'n' Roller Coaster set list conversation, Star Wars popcorn buckets, and LEGO Smart Play. That already would have been enough for one episode, but the night kept going. We also talked Hallmark with Holly again, the new It's a Small World Hallmark collection, Earth Day, the live Muppets coaster page, H2O Glow returning to Disney's Typhoon Lagoon, and a look back at Rock 'n' Roller Coaster during Easter and Christmas of 1999. If you missed the show, this is your place to catch up on the biggest topics and then jump into the related coverage from the week. Disney News Out of CinemaCon CinemaCon gave Disney fans a lot to talk about this week. Disney used the event to spotlight its upcoming theatrical slate, with presentations spanning Disney Live Action, Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar, Marvel Studios, Lucasfilm, 20th Century Studios, and Searchlight Pictures. Disney also used the moment to launch Infinity Vision, a new premium large format theater certification meant to highlight the biggest and most immersive auditoriums for moviegoers. That made CinemaCon one of the biggest headlines of the week because it was not just about one trailer or one reveal. It was a broader look at where Disney's theatrical business is heading next, which gave this episode a strong headline topic right out of the gate. Star Wars Celebration 2027 Is Heading to Los Angeles One of the biggest Star Wars stories of the week was the official push for Star Wars Celebration 2027 in Los Angeles. StarWars.com confirmed the event will take place April 1 through April 4, 2027, at the Los Angeles Convention Center, and the newly released key art pays tribute to the original Tom Jung poster for Star Wars as the franchise approaches its 50th anniversary. That made Celebration feel like more than just another convention update. This is the next major Star Wars fan gathering in the United States, and it is already being framed around one of the most important anniversaries in franchise history. For Star Wars fans, that is a big deal. Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Set List Talk Is Not Going Away We also spent time on the Rock 'n' Roller Coaster set list conversation, which continues to be one of the most fun fan debates right now. With Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets officially taking shape, the music question has become part of the hype. Disney's official summer page also now lists Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets as arriving May 26, 2026, giving fans even more reason to keep watching for details. LEGO Smart Play Adds Another Layer to the Conversation LEGO Smart Play also made the list this week, adding one more lane to an already stacked show. That is part of what made this episode feel so full. It bounced from theme parks to movies to Star Wars to collectibles without ever staying in one place for too long. Earth Day Brings a Different Kind of Disney Story Earth Day also made its way into the show, giving the episode a broader Disney angle beyond rides, collectibles, and media announcements. Disney Parks Blog highlighted how renewable energy is helping power attractions and hotels across Disney destinations during Earth Month, which gave this week another conversation point tied to how Disney presents its environmental efforts.   H2O Glow Is Back at Typhoon Lagoon H2O Glow After Hours is officially coming back to Disney's Typhoon Lagoon. Disney says the event returns on select nights from June 2 through September 5, 2026, and the official event page says this year includes new additions such as Powerline Max and Chip 'n' Dale. Guests staying at Disney Resort hotels and select other hotels can already buy tickets for dates during their stay, while sales for all other guests begin April 24, 2026. (disneyworld.disney.go.com) Looking Back at Rock 'n' Roller Coaster in 1999 The show also took a nostalgic turn with a look back at Rock 'n' Roller Coaster during Easter and Christmas of 1999. That kind of deep-cut throwback adds a lot to the weekly format because it connects current Disney conversation to the park memories that longtime fans still care about. With the original Rock 'n' Roller Coaster era now giving way to the Muppets version, looking back at 1999 carries even more weight. It is not just nostalgia for nostalgia's sake. It is part of the larger story of how Disney's Hollywood Studios keeps changing. Watch the full live show below.

This week I'm delighted to be talking with five-time novelist Christopher Castellani. Christopher's newest book is “Last Seen,” which combines suspense, true crime, and magical realism to take the reader on a journey through the psyches and preoccupations of young men coming of age in twenty-first-century America.Christopher's first novel, “A Kiss from Maddalena,” chronicled the Italian-American immigrant experience and won the Massachusetts Book Award; its follow-up, “The Saint of Lost Things,” was a BookSense Notable Book; and the final novel in the trilogy, “All This Talk of Love,” was a New York Times Editors' Choice. His novel “Leading Men,” about the playwright Tennessee Williams and his longtime partner Frank Merlo, was a Los Angeles Times bestseller and is being developed into a movie for Searchlight Pictures. We covered:- What happened in fifth grade that made him decide to be a writer- Why he decided not to pursue the more stable path of becoming a writing professor- How being an author is a little like being a one man band- How he uses his books to make money–and it's not by selling more copies- The habit he started during the pandemic that he still does, and that has totally changed his relationship to reading- The nerdy 80s magazine he's still a subscriber toConnect with Christopher (and check if he's doing an event near you!) at christophercastellani.com.For full show notes with links to everything we discuss, plus bonus photos!, visit katehanley.substack.com.Thank you for listening! A deep dive conversation based on the moviescramble.co.uk review written by Mary Munoz. A woman, thrown into the stay-at-home routine of raising a toddler in the suburbs, slowly embraces the feral power deeply rooted in motherhood, as she becomes increasingly aware of the bizarre and undeniable signs that she may be turning into a dog. Nightbitch is a 2024 American black comedy body horror film written and directed by Marielle Heller, based on the 2021 novel by Rachel Yoder. The film stars Amy Adams, Scoot McNairy, Arleigh Snowden, Emmett Snowden, Zoë Chao, Mary Holland, Archana Rajan, and Jessica Harper. Nightbitch premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 7, 2024, and was released theatrically in the United States by Searchlight Pictures on December 6, 2024. The film received mixed reviews from critics. Mother has paused her career as an artist to become a stay-at-home mom for her two-year-old son. Because her husband is away on work trips most of the time, she is responsible for most of the boy's caregiving. Feeling isolated from her artistic identity and resentful of what she sees as the expectation to be friends with other mothers, she frequently fantasizes about lashing out at those around her. She begins to experience surreal physical changes, including patches of fur on her body, the growth of a tail, additional nipples, and heightened senses. Although she initially dismisses these developments as symptoms of emotional stress and perimenopause, she soon becomes convinced that she is turning into a dog. Nat Turner, leader of the deadliest slave rebellion in U.S. history, was captured on 30th October, 1831. For over two months, he'd hidden out in the woods of Virginia, having led a violent uprising that terrified white Southerners and electrified the enslaved population. When finally caught, by farmer Benjamin Phipps, Turner was armed only with a sword and a few branches. Born into slavery in 1800, Turner was marked from birth - literally - with mysterious symbols on his chest that his family interpreted as a sign from God. A prodigious reader and deeply religious, he became known as a preacher, believing he was divinely chosen to free his people.  In the early hours of August 22, he and his accomplices started their killing spree by murdering Turner's master, Joseph Travis, and his family. They then moved swiftly across Southampton County, recruiting others and attacking slaveholders. Their plan was to reach the county seat of Jerusalem, seize weapons, and spark a full-scale revolution. By the rebellion's end, about 60 white people were dead, but so were over 120 Black people, many of them innocent victims of revenge killings by militias and vigilantes.  In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly uncover the manhunt for Turner and the brief trial before he was hanged; reveal how white lawmakers responded to events with ever-harsher laws prohibiting the movements of enslaved people; and consider Turner's complex legacy…  CONTENT WARNING: descriptions of extreme violence, racist violence, racism, mutilation. Emmy-nominated writer Seth Reiss made his feature film debut with Mark Mylod's THE MENU in 2022, which he co-wrote and executive produced with Will Tracy, and received a WGA nomination for Searchlight Pictures. He is currently a supervising writer on LATE NIGHT WITH SETH MEYERS, for which he has received five Emmys and five WGA nominations. Reiss' new writing and producing project includes Sony Pictures' A BIG BOLD BEAUTIFUL JOURNEY starring Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell. A BIG BOLD BEAUTIFUL JOURNEY follows two strangers who meet at a mutual friend's wedding and have the chance to relive important moments from their pasts, illuminating the path that led them to the present and gaining the opportunity to change their futures. In this interview, we talk about how Seth is balancing his role at LATE NIGHT WITH SETH MEYERS with screenwriting alongside Will Tracy, which led to the successful film THE MENU, and now his new film A BIG BOLD BEAUTIFUL JOURNEY. We also discuss how his writing philosophy favors high-concept premises that quickly focus on emotional, layered characters, with RUSHMORE as a key influence. Reiss also talks about his unproduced film FELLAS AND GALS, and gives advice for aspiring writers. Want more?
