Tread Perilously begins a cornucopia of sci-fi with the most infamous episode of Torchwood: "Cyberwoman." When Ianto Jones invites a specialist in Cyber tech to Torchwood 3, all hell breaks loose. It turns out he's been keeping his partially Cyber-ized girlfriend on life support since the Battle of Canary Wharf. He's using a Cyber-conversion machine to do it. And none of the others know about it. Of course, Cybermen are going to Cyberman, but will a "Cyberwoman" also seek to make all organic life like her? Also: what will Captain Jack Harkness do when he learns Ianto has been keeping a woman prisoner in their basement? Justin faces his first -- and possibly last -- episode of Torchwood. He learns almost immediately why Erik has been putting this one off for so long. Episode writer Chris Chibnall is, once again, in the hot seat. Erik is accused of being a David Tennant fan. The weeds lead to some darker places, but also to discussion of The Tick, the Noldor, and more. Justin tries to make sense of Torchwood as a concept. He also notes Erik's "angry" British accent. A surprise Burn Gorman appears! White Water Summer is used to prove a point. The viscosity of Ianto becomes important and Justin suggests Torchwood isn't sexy enough.

You are not supposed to say the name “Beetlejuice” three times, otherwise he will appear. Someone must've said gone and said it because he's back in theaters 36 years after we last saw him in 1988 in “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.” Michael Keaton reprises yet another one of the characters that made him the star that he is along with Winona Ryder, as Lydia Deetz, and Catherine O'Hara, as Delia Deetz, from the original. Also, Tim Burton returns to direct this sequel to the movie that pretty much got him the “Batman” job. Burton does again feature the afterlife oddities and general weirdness but amplifies it for today's audience. It all starts with Lydia seeing Beetlejuice visions and needing to reunite with her daughter, Astrid, played by Jenna Ortega. Events soon lead them to the house from the first movie and all that lie within, including the title character, who hasn't forgotten Lydia. However, there's a ghostly figure, named Delores played by Monica Bellucci, who hasn't forgotten about Beetlejuice. She's on the hunt for her man and woe to any that get in her way. Tim Burton also brings in some new characters like Rory, played by Justin Theroux and Wolf Jackson played by Willem Dafoe. Will it haunt you forever if you don't go see this at the theater? Check out this episode to find out that very thing. “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” also stars Arthur Conti, Nick Kellington, Santiago Cabrera, Burn Gorman, Danny DeVito, Sami Slimane and Amy Nuttall. But while Ken's is in editing CGI-animated features like TOY STORY 3 (2010) and CARS (2006), Holly's earlier work was actually as an animator for TV shows such as BLUES CLUES and WONDER PETS! Together they took on the roles of Animatic Editor (Ken) and Production Editor (Holly) to help tame the massive challenge of crafting a contemporary stop motion classic. Academy Award-winning director Guillermo del Toro's lifelong love of animation and the art of stop motion began when he was a child growing up in Guadalajara, Mexico. By the age of eight, he had started shooting his own amateur stop motion films using his toys and a Super 8 camera that belonged to his father. As a teenager, he began teaching Claymation classes and, in the process, came upon an idea that would find its way to fruition four decades later; a cinematic adaptation based on Gris Grimly's design from his 2002 edition of Carlo Collodi's 1883 Italian novel, The Adventures of Pinocchio. Co-directed by del Toro and stop motion vet Mark Gustafson (in his feature directorial debut), the film stars the voices of Ewan McGregor, David Bradley, Gregory Mann, Burn Gorman, John Turturro, Ron Perlman, Finn Wolfhard, Cate Blanchett, Tim Blake Nelson, Christoph Waltz, and Tilda Swinton. In this week's episode of the AIPT Movies podcast, Alex, Tim, and Matt discuss Chloe Okuno's psychological thriller, Watcher! How do they use real world situations to create a lack of trust for both the characters and the viewer? How well does the fish-out-of-water setting increase the sense of tension and isolation for the protagonist? Also, Matt saw 2017's Life from Morbius director, Daniel Espinosa. What did he think? Listen now to find out!In addition to the movie discussions, Tim has been fired from Harry and the Hendersons II: The Squatchening for the third, and seemingly final time. Once again, the blame falls on Tim's arch-nemesis and fellow suit actor, Wilson Montenero. Will Tim ever discover the reason for Wilson's seemingly endless grudge?!You can find AIPT Movies on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. Director: Chloe Okuno Screenwriter: Zachary Ford, Chloe Okuno Starring: Maika Monroe, Karl Glusman, Madalina Anea, Chloe Okuno, Burn Gorman, Gabriela Butuc, Tudor Petrut Runtime: 1 hour 36 minutes SXSW Synopsis: set in the midst of a citywide panic over an active serial killer, a young woman moves into a new apartment with her partner and is tormented by the feeling that she is being stalked by an unseen watcher in an adjacent building. (This review was originally part of MTR's 2022 festival coverage.) ** Watcher, director Chloe Okuno's feature debut, follows Julia (Maika Monroe) and Francis (Karl Glusman), a young couple just arrived in Bucharest, Romania for Francis' new job. Julia doesn't speak Romanian or know the country. Almost immediately, she finds herself adrift in the city with an increasingly unavailable husband. She spends most days listening to language lessons and otherwise wandering around at loose ends. Francis does little to help his wife adjust. He's quick to speak in Romanian, cutting her out of conversations by often failing to translate. He makes no attempt to orient her in the city or their new lives. The first night in their home, she notices the silhouette of a man standing at a window in the building across from theirs. He appears to be looking at her. Days later, in an attempt to convince herself she's imagining things, Julia waves when she sees him. The man raises a hand and waves back. If this setup has a decidedly Hitchcockian feel, have no fear you're not imagining it. The hints of voyeurism and Rear Window vibes echo thematically throughout the film. There's even a very meta moment early on where Julia can't shake the feeling of being stalked inside a theater while watching Stanley Donen's Charade. Okuno plays with visual perspectives with overhead shots, shots from below, and three-quarter angles to build an ever growing specter of doubt in what Julia's actually experiencing. Her approach invites the audience to transfer their own anxieties and fears onto the main character. It's not unique but unlike its predecessor films in the genre (think Hereditary or Repulsion), Okuno uses Julia's seeming aimlessness to credibly make room for doubt without completely leaving the character as an empty cipher. In Monroe's capable hands, Julia's got depth in her distressed gaze. Her growing listlessness and lack of focus aid in distorting time and recollection. Paranoia is self-replenishing. Once something trips that switch, it's like a constant itch at the base of your skull; a twitch between your shoulder blades. If the feeling lingers long enough, you can find yourself practically jumping at shadows, flinching away from people, and avoiding places where you can't put your back to a wall. Thread that paranoia into a story centering a woman convinced she's being watched (and possibly followed) who can't get anyone to take her seriously and you've got the perfect nightmare fuel. As Julia's sense of being followed increases, Francis begins to fully discount her unsettled feelings, casting her further adrift. It doesn't help that there's an actual serial killer, called the Spider, preying on women in the city. Pretty soon, she's sleeping poorly and coming off as a blurry eyed hysteric to the people around her. So when her only friend, Irina (Madalina Anea), goes missing from the building; no one's willing to take her seriously. Whenever she tries to articulate what she's feeling, it comes out sounding hesitant and unconvincing. To others, the situation begins to look more and more like an unhinged American woman targeting a solitary local man. Monroe's performance convincingly pushes you into questioning her reliability as a narrator. As incidents and inexplicable encounters keep happening even Julia begins to doubt herself. But if you, like me, automatically say, “oh no” whenever you see Burn Gorman's name on a cast list; then you know, Julia should definitely trust her gut.

We’re starting our walk through Season 4! Which Expanse characters sound like they ought to be an R&B duo, and does that mean it’s time for a BUFFY-like musical episode? We talk about what a difference it makes to spend so much time on not one, not two, but three planets in a single episode, and so little on spaceships. Also on the docket: the dangerous animal magnetism of Burn Gorman, Steven Strait’s plus-10 modifiers to smiling, a couch-surfing former gunnery sergeant, and a couple of bold predictions from the podcasters who have only seen the first episode of the season…
Host Ana Marie Cox sits with Burn Gorman to talk about his experience playing bad guys, the similarities he sees between The Expanse and the 'old west' and his character's relationship to the others on the show. Ana is also joined by Ty Franck who writes and produces the TV show and speaks about the show's new landscape.
