Art ain't just about pretty pictures—it's about truth, pain, and unfinished stories. In Exhibiting Forgiveness, André Holland takes on the role of Tarrell, a rising painter whose past comes back to haunt his canvas when his estranged father La'Ron (John Earl Jelks) suddenly reappears. What follows is a raw, deeply personal journey of trauma, redemption, and the kind of family wounds that even time can't erase. Directed by Titus Kaphar, a celebrated artist making his feature debut, this film isn't just a visual masterpiece—it's an emotional gut punch. With Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor and Andra Day bringing powerhouse performances, the story forces us to ask: Can you ever truly forgive someone who broke you? And if you do, are you actually healing—or just painting over the cracks? In this episode of TruVue Podcast, we break down how this introspective drama blends art with real-life struggles, creating a film that feels more like an open wound than just another family story. We bring the barbershop talk to the box office because it's not about the review—it's the conversation with the crew. We keep it real on the reels, so grab your paintbrush and let's talk about Exhibiting Forgiveness! This episode of Does it Fly? is presented by Netflix, the exclusive home of Terminator Zero, starring Timothy Olyphant, Rosario Dawson, Sonoya Mizuno, André Holland, and Ann Dowd. Terminator Zero is now streaming only on Netflix. We've got a special episode of Does it Fly? for you this time around. Consider this one a little bonus after our recent episode on The Terminator, because now we've got an inside look at Terminator Zero, Netflix's brand new, lushly animated anime series (with an impressive voice cast, to boot) that adds a previously unseen dimension to the entire Terminator franchise. We sent one of our hosts, the brilliant Tamara Krinsky, to talk to Mattson Tomlin (The Batman, Mother/Android). But Tomlin is currently the showrunner of Terminator Zero, and those familiar with the thoughtful, gritty nature of his other screen work won't be disappointed by the rigorous knowledge and intensity he brought to this show. And with our pop culture expert, Tamara, asking the big questions, Tomlin unpacks a lot of the central themes of the impressive new show. Check it out here or on our YouTube page. Oh yeah, and let us know what you think! If you want more interview style episodes of Does it Fly? where your favorite creatives tell us HOW they make your favorite sci-fi, horror, and fantasy projects work, drop us a line in the comments or on our socials!Check out a few of our favorite points from the interview, which we feel offer a nice parallel to our usual episode structure. But this is a pretty in-depth exploration of Terminator Zero with the showrunner, so don't take our word for it, listen to the episode!THE SCIENCEDOES IT FLY: I'm curious, as you were putting the pieces of this together, did you do any research? Did you talk to scientists so that the audience would watch this and say, “yeah, this flies. This works for us.” MATTSON TOMLIN: Yeah. Probably not to the degree that the PhD guy would be happy with me, but definitely a lot of reading about Turing tests today and about what the capabilities [of AI] are. It's kind of one of those things where, as far as we know and what the public facing information is, we're not quite there yet … I think that the jumps [in capability] are exponential. So there was still a level of invention. It's a sci-fi show, so you've got to make some stuff up, but we also made sure that it never felt like it was fully beyond the bounds of what's actually happening out there today. THE STORYDiF: When was the moment during production that you as a writer, as a showrunner, felt like, “yeah, this thing has wings. This thing can fly.” MT: There's a couple of different answers to that, because it comes in stages. I feel really proud of the show. I think that there are stages … For me, the first time that that happened was while I was writing, and I got through episode four [and then] once I started writing episode five, it's like, “oh, now the plane has taken off, and now we're at altitude, and now, actually, I have to think about landing.” Having these four episodes, and I can I can read that 100 or so pages and go, “I stand by this, this is working now I just need to land the plane.” It's not that I felt like, “oh, I've got this.” But I felt like there was enough material that there's a story that is being told now that feels worth telling. That was kind of the first time. The second time was definitely once art started to come in from [anime studio] Production IG, and seeing the level at which they were executing and [knowing] this is going to look beautiful. I think then the third time was certainly the working on the score and working with [Terminator Zero composers] Michelle Birsky and Kevin Henthorn and finding a sonic identity for the score that felt like Terminator, and at the same time, does its own thing. We didn't just want to be playing the same stuff, it needed to feel inherently its own.THE VIBEDiF: Why was the decision made to do this as an anime?MT: From a creative standpoint, you're just able to do things that haven't been done before, because if you're making a movie and a movie that's in a franchise like Terminator, then there are certain expectations, certain beats that it has to hit. And, you know, those movies are $100-200 million movies. A [movie of that scale] is going to be a certain kind of thing. And this isn't that. Not only because it's animated, but because it's an anime. So it creates these variables … It's an opportunity to kind of breathe a lot of new life into it …it was kind of driven by story and an opportunity to just do something the franchise hadn't done before.WANT MORE FROM DOES IT FLY?We also took a deep scientific look at the paradox that so much of the entire Terminator franchise revolves around. This episode of Does it Fly? is presented by Netflix, the exclusive home of Terminator Zero, starring Timothy Olyphant, Rosario Dawson, Sonoya Mizuno, André Holland, and Ann Dowd. Terminator Zero is now streaming only on Netflix.“Come with me if you want to learn.”OK, fine, that's not what anyone says pretty much anywhere in the Terminator franchise. But haven't you ever wondered just how some of the time travel concepts that set up one of the most successful and beloved sci-fi movie and TV franchises of all time work? This episode is really only dealing with the “grandfather paradox” as it relates to The Terminator (1984), James Cameron's original sci-fi horror masterpiece that pretty much strapped a stardom rocket to Arnold Schwarzenegger's back and helped redefine the boundaries of sci-fi and action storytelling on screen. It also kicked off one of the most sprawling and beloved science fiction franchises of a generation. Check it out here or on our YouTube page!SUGGESTED VIEWING While we're pretty much only focused on that first film for this episode, if you want to expand your Terminator knowledge, it can feel like a lot. When in doubt when you're navigating a big franchise that occupies different places on its own timeline, we always advise you not overthink it and just watch in release order. So we'll give you that along with some suggestions to make this as fun and painless as possible. The Terminator (1984)If you want a sci-fi action movie that's filmed with the pacing and sense of dread of a horror movie, you can't go wrong with the original. A legitimate classic of 1980s genre cinema, it has endured for a reason. If you only watch one movie in the franchise, this is the one!Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)If you only watch one other Terminator movie, make it 1991's bigger and more technically groundbreaking sequel. For those of you who want a more summer blockbuster action sensibility as opposed to the first film's horror undertones, you can just go ahead and watch Judgment Day on its own, as it does an excellent job getting you up to speed even if you haven't seen the original. Bigger action sequences and some eye-popping special effects make this one essential viewing.Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003)Probably not as bad as you've heard, but not exactly essential viewing either. This one builds out the lore of how Skynet rose to power and has a few bonkers battle sequences, but if time is of the essence, stick to the first two movies. It's also the first entry in the franchise that starts messing with the canon in ways that future installments try to smooth out.Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (2008-2009)The franchise's first expansion into TV has a devoted cult following, and with good reason! Still, that's a lot of viewing hours, and it isn't strictly faithful to the lore of the series as a whole. This can be viewed as its own self-contained alternate timeline within the Terminator universe.Terminator Salvation (2009)Terminator Salvation is a direct sequel to the events of Rise of the Machines…and thus a prequel to the first film. And despite starring Christian Bale at the height of his stardom as John Connor, it's…well, let's just say it's not essential viewing. But if you're keeping track so far, the canonical events of the franchise go from the first three movies to this one…which depicts events prior to the first film. Got it? Good, because it ain't getting any easier!Terminator Genisys (2015)This one is essentially a reboot of the entire franchise and…you know what? You can skip it. Trust us.Terminator: Dark Fate (2019)Somewhat maligned upon release, but better than you've heard! We're back in alternate timeline territory, though, as this film ignores everything other than the first two movies and instead acts as a direct (if belated) sequel to Terminator 2: Judgment Day. Honestly, worth your time, especially if you're looking to condense the franchise to a more digestible three films (in this case The Terminator, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, and Terminator: Dark Fate)Terminator Zero (2024)Netflix is the exclusive home of this first animated Terminator outing, made by the same anime studio who brought the classic Ghost in the Shell to screens. Terminator Zero functions both as a self-contained Terminator adventure (meaning you don't necessarily need knowledge of the rest of the franchise to enjoy and understand it) and also as something that enriches the lore of the films. Lushly animated and boasting a cast that includes Timothy Olyphant, Rosario Dawson, Sonoya Mizuno, André Holland, and Ann Dowd, serious fans won't want to miss this.FURTHER READING Do you want to delve a little deeper into the facts, concepts, and stories Hakeem and Tamara referenced in today's episode? Of course you do! Grandfather ParadoxThe central concept of this episode and the one we wanted to explore the most! This article has the most succinct explanation of a rather headache-y concept we've ever seen. “...the idea that a cause must precede its effect. The paradox suggests that a cause is eliminated by its own effect, thus preventing its own cause and essentially becoming reverse causation.” It goes on to explain some of the other scientific concepts that inform this pretty well. For a little additional context, you can also check out this piece. The Bootstrap ParadoxThe other paradox that informs our discussion (and pops up often in pop culture time travel stories). Our question is…why is Northrop Grumman writing about this. WHAT DO THEY KNOW THAT THEY AREN'T TELLING US?!?Heisenberg Uncertainty PrincipleHey, remember this one from our episode on the transporter from Star Trek? We don't think you can do any better for quality book-learnin' on the subject than this article from CalTech.Relativity TrainIn case our animation illustrating Hakeem's point about viewing actions in a train traveling at a different speed than the observer, Harvard University made a pretty substantial meal out of the experiment which you can read about (and watch) here.WANT MORE FROM DOES IT FLY?Just a reminder, if you haven't watched our exploration of Xenomorph biology as it was explored in the first Alien movie (which also happens to be one of our most popular episodes), now's a good time to get to it!Check out our episode on the most infamous moment in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, which just celebrated its 40th anniversary. This week we're excited to present a conversation from the 2024 edition of New Directors/New Films with Exhibiting Forgiveness director Titus Kaphar and lead actor André Holland. One of the contemporary art world's most important painters, Titus Kaphar creates powerful work that is multidisciplinary in nature and profound in historical meaning, often incorporating multiple layers and sculptural dimensions to his canvases. Kaphar brings the same sense of profoundly felt dynamism to his startlingly accomplished cinematic debut, Exhibiting Forgiveness, a wrenching work of emotional depth and visual flair starring the magnificent André Holland in one of the actor's greatest screen roles so far. Painter Tarrell Rodin (Holland) is a loving and grounded husband to singer Aisha (Andra Day) and father to young Jermaine (Daniel Berrier), but he's violently haunted by nightmares of his childhood. While preparing for a new gallery show, Tarrell finds his life upended by the sudden return of his father, La'Ron (John Earl Jelks). His mother, Joyce (Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor), has forgiven La'Ron for the abuse and addiction of their family's troubled past, but Tarrell cannot bring himself to do the same. While working on his large-scale canvases, Tarrell journeys to his past, wondering if he can alter the pain of his present. Kaphar's film—as provocative in its depiction of unresolvable familial crises as it is about the meaning and co-opting of Black voices in the contemporary art scene—wrestles with difficult, personal questions without settling on easy answers. The conversation was moderated by New Directors/New Films selection committee member Madeline Whittle.

We welcomed director Luca Guadagnino and actors Taylor Russell and Chloë Sevigny to NYFF60 to present and discuss Bones and All, a Spotlight selection of this year's festival, moderated by NYFF Executive Director, Eugene Hernandez. In a startling, star-making performance, Taylor Russell plays Maren, a teenager who has just moved to a small town in Virginia with her father (André Holland). However, it's only a matter of time before the frightening secret Maren harbors is revealed and she must hit the road again—on her own. Soon, she meets another young drifter, Lee (Timothée Chalamet), who understands her more than anyone she's ever met, and the two set out on a cross-country journey, satiating their dangerous desires and reckoning with their tragic pasts. Adapting a novel by Camille DeAngelis, director Luca Guadagnino (Call Me by Your Name) has crafted a work of both tender fragility and feral intensity, setting corporeal horror and runaway romance against a vividly textured Americana, and featuring fully inhabited supporting turns from Mark Rylance, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jessica Harper, Chloë Sevigny, and Anna Cobb. A United Artists release.
Frederick Douglass was not only one of our greatest activists, he was a great writer, an artist who worked in words. Director Julie Marchesi (P.O.V., American Masters, African-American Lives) and producer Seun Babalola (NOVA, The United Shades of America, Africa Everywhere) explore the growth of his mind and the power of his words in their Emmy-nominated “Frederick Douglass: In Five Speeches.” Each speech is performed by one of the film's all-star cast (Nicole Beharie, Colman Domingo, Jonathan Majors, Denzel Whitaker, Jeffrey Wright) and André Holland provides a narrative spine by reading from Douglas' autobiographies. Inspired by David Blight's magisterial biography, the film is light on didacticism but shot-through with the inspiration that can only come from one born under slavery and freed by his own actions and words. “Frederick Douglass: In Five Speeches” is now streaming on HBO. It's 'Part Two' this week's @EchoChamberFP https://www.instagram.com/echochamberfp/ and this time, we bring you three vastly different, BUT, very good films!, Starting on Apple TV+ with a story of friendship from the future, then it's over to Netflix for a book adaptation that hits a racial & cultural nerve. And then, what could be this generation's 'Love Jones'! 'Finch' is a new dystopian feature on Apple TV+, directed by Miguel Sapochnik and written by Craig Luck & Ivor Powell. On a post-apocalyptic earth, Tom Hanks is Finch, a man who embarks on a moving and powerful journey to find a new home for his unlikely family—his beloved dog and a newly created robot—in a dangerous and ravaged world. Rebecca Hall adapts ‘Passing', Nella Larsen's celebrated 1929 novel of the same name for the big screen! It tells the story of two Black women, Irene Redfield (Tessa Thompson) and Clare Kendry (Ruth Negga), who can “pass” as white but choose to live on opposite sides of the color line during the height of the Harlem Renaissance in late 1920s New York. After a chance encounter reunites the former childhood friends one summer afternoon, Irene reluctantly allows Clare into her home, where she ingratiates herself to Irene's husband (André Holland) and family, and soon her larger social circle as well. As their lives become more deeply intertwined, Irene finds her once-steady existence upended by Clare. 'Really Love' is directed by Angel Kristi Williams and co-written by Felicia Pride. Set in contemporary Washington D.C., a rising black painter, Isaiah (Kofi Siriboe) strives to break into the competitive art world, while balancing a bittersweet romance he never expected with a strong & ambitious law student, Stevie (Yootha Wong-Loi-Sing) with her own dreams, aspirations, and desires. On today's episode of our daily NYFF59 podcasts, NYFF Director Eugene Hernandez speaks with director Rebecca Hall and cast members Tessa Thompson, Ruth Negga, and André Holland about Passing, a Main Slate selection of the 59th New York Film Festival. A cornerstone work of Harlem Renaissance literature, Nella Larsen's 1929 novel Passing is adapted to the screen with exquisite craft and skill by writer-director Rebecca Hall, who envelops the viewer in a bygone period that remains tragically present. The film's extraordinary anchors are Tessa Thompson and Ruth Negga, meticulous as middle-class Irene and Clare, reacquainted childhood friends whose lives have taken divergent paths. Clare has decided to “pass” as white to maintain her social standing, even hiding her identity from her racist white husband, John (Alexander Skarsgård); Irene, on the other hand, is married to a prominent Black doctor, Brian (André Holland), who is initially horrified at Clare's choices. As the film progresses, and resentments and latent attractions bristle, Hall creates an increasingly claustrophobic world both constructed and destabilized by racism, identity performance, and sexual frustration, leading to a shocking conclusion. A Netflix release. Explore what's playing at NYFF59 and get tickets at filmlinc.org/nyff.

Behind Her EyesCreated by Steve Lightfoot (The Punisher, Hannibal), Behind Her Eyes is a tight little thriller about a young woman involved with her married boss, who then finds herself in a friendship with his lonely, fragile wife until it's not.It stars Simona Brown, Eve Hewson, Tom Bateman, and we neglected to talk about Robert Aramayo, who is excellent as Rob. You may know him as young Ned Stark in Game of Thrones or creepy Elmer Wayne Henley Jr. in Mindhunter. He was even in Tom Ford's Nocturnal Animals! We're sorry, Rob. We'll talk about you next week. Yes, Elaine did guest the ending... believe it not!!NomadlandThis one is definitely an Oscar contender, along with last week's Judas and the Black Messiah. Yeah, we're getting December caliber movies in February. Thx COVID. Zhao Ting has always used "real people" (non-actors) in her movies, which is no exception. In addition to the Oscar-worthy performances by Frances McDormand as Fern and David Strathairn as David.Nomadland is a hard-hitting modern-day The Grapes of Wrath. Everyone should be free to live as they choose. But, until our older Americans ALL have that choice, we have failed as a nation. That said, the resilience and dignity displayed by the real-life Nomads is more than admirable, Throwback: The Knick One of our favorite shows in the last decade is Steven Soderbergh's, The Knick. Spearheaded by Steven Soderbergh's resourceful / expedient directorial ingenuity (producing a gorgeous motion picture from nothing more than an iPhone & some affordable stabilizers / lenses), Tarell Alvin McCraney's lean screenplay (seething with a biblical heft and a savvy subversiveness toward the capitalistic status quo), and a crackling cast (led by the smooth and silky André Holland, playing the ever clever sports agent Ray Burke), "High Flying Bird" is a disruptive game-changer on many levels. Released directly onto Netflix—and bypassing just about every buffer / middle-man possible—the production of this film nicely mirrors the core message of the movie: preaching the power of intellect & cunning in circumventing the hegemonic powers that be. Sure, the aforementioned streaming service is a hegemonic power in its own right; but in many ways, a film like "High Flying Bird" would hold a very small probability of being made if it sought out funding & a platform in the superficial movie-scape of modern Hollywood. Leading by example, "High Flying Bird" thus showcases just how invaluable the schemings of a sharp mind can be in terms of bringing the big boys (whether that be the NBA or major studios / producers) to the negotiation table. With zingy dialogue, a taut / melodious pace, and a few unexpected twists that boast the rewards of outsmarting one's adversary in the internecine marketplace of modern capitalism, there is not a boring or vapid moment to spare. Devoid of excess & superfluity, "High Flying Bird" is truly a feat of economic filmmaking; and though sports are never directly depicted in action, the philosophical, fiscal, and even spiritual elements of what it means to have a love for the game—and what it means to position oneself in a way that demands and earns respect from the game that has been placed "on top of the game"—are ever palpable: sermonized onscreen from the pulpit of pointed cynicism and adroitness. Suffice to say, if you have not yet seen this film, do not let "High Flying Bird" burrow too deeply into the catacombs of Netflix's bizarre algorithm; and as always, it is recommended that you watch "High Flying Bird" first if you do not want key plot developments to be spoiled. Finally, if you enjoy the podcast, please like / subscribe / share the word with your friends!! And we look forward to seeing you again when we publish our final episode of this segment of sports movies (the "Behind the Scenes" sub-genre), which will analyze on the recent classic, "Moneyball". Happy New Year!

The Friends discuss two audio plays: Richard II by Shakespeare and Julia Pastrana by Shaun Prendergast. Richard II was presented by the Public Theater and WNYC, and starred André Holland as the king and Miriam A. Hyman as his foe Henry Bolingbroke. It's still available to download. Julia Pastrana is produced by Amphibian Stage Co. and is about the ugliest woman in the world. It's based on a true story and is meant to be listened to in the dark. How immersive! The Friends discussed what worked about the productions, does race matter when it's radio and how audio plays can give you the ASMR tingles. This week's guest is playwright Clare Barron, who was a Pulitzer Prize finalist for drama for her play Dance Nation. Barron just wrote a new short play called What This Will Be Like When It's Over, for a new theater journal called The Flashpaper. It's about dating during the pandemic. She and the Friends got into a deep discussion about sex and dating, and how Barron is able to get ultra-personal in her plays without feeling self-conscious. Also, she talked about that time she had sex onstage. There's some very frank talk of sex, with some expletives thrown in, so please if listen on your headphones if these subjects are sensitive to you or anyone around you. Here are links to things the Friends talked about in this episode. Free Shakespeare on the Radio: Richard II Julia Pastrana at Amphibian Stage Co. This summer, the Public Theatre, in New York, is putting on Shakespeare’s history play “Richard II.” Because most theatre was cancelled, even outdoors, due to the pandemic, the Public partnered with WNYC to bring the show to the radio. The production stars André Holland as the weak, indecisive king who faces a rebellion by his cousin, Bolingbroke. Richard is not a “bad dude,” Holland says, but a man doing the best he can in a situation he cannot manage. The theatre critic Vinson Cunningham spoke with Holland about performing Shakespeare as a Black actor and his concerns about taking on the role of King Richard: What would a Black man playing the failed leader convey to an audience? Holland also explains why he thinks that Black actors are particularly suited to inhabiting the language of Shakespeare.
FROM OPEN AIR TO ON THE AIR! Join WNYC and The Public Theater as we bring Free Shakespeare in the Park to the airwaves with William Shakespeare’s RICHARD II. Brought to you in a serialized radio broadcast over four nights, listen as the last of the divinely anointed monarchs descends and loses it all. When King Richard banishes his cousin Henry Bolingbroke and deprives him of his inheritance, he unwittingly creates an enemy who will ultimately force him from the throne. One of the Bard’s only dramas entirely in verse, this epic and intimate play presents the rise of the house of Lancaster through a riveting tale of lost sovereignty, political intrigue, and psychological complexity. Directed by Saheem Ali, experience this beautiful and cutting play in an exciting serialized radio format from wherever you are. “A fractured society. A man wrongfully murdered. The palpable threat of violence and revenge against a broken system. Revolution and regime change. This was Shakespeare’s backdrop for Richard II. I’m exceptionally proud of this production, recorded for public radio with a predominantly BIPOC ensemble, led by the extraordinary André Holland,” said director Saheem Ali. “It’s my hope that listening to Shakespeare’s words, broadcast in the midst of a pandemic and an uprising, will have powerful resonance in our world.” In support of the fight against racism and inequality and in recognition of the unspeakable violence against Black communities, The Public Theater and the artists of RICHARD II dedicate this production to the Black Lives Matter Movement.
Your hosts Manish (@themanish89) and David (@daveagiannini) reach the year 2016. It’s the year Moonlight was released, the Academy Award Best Picture winner, directed by Barry Jenkins and starring Trevante Rhodes, André Holland, Janelle, Naomie Harris, and Mahershala Ali. It’s also the year Park Chan-wook’s The Handmaiden was released, starring Kim Min-hee, Kim Tae-ri Ha, and Jung-woo. Both are important LGBTQ films in their own right, and both are discussed in this episode!

Hawaii 5.0 se finira en saison 10 C’est une triste nouvelle pour les fans d’Hawaii 5-0 : la série, qui fête ses 10 ans cette année, fera donc ses adieux au terme de sa 10ème saison. Fadl Saadi, PhD is a comedian/luminary/admirer of all things Vin Diesel, and he joins Sasha and Steven to celebrate xXx: RETURN OF XANDER CAGE (2017), also starring Donnie Yen, Kris Wu and Deepika Padukone. Why do Fadl, Steven and Sasha keep on profusely apologizing to Michael Bisping? Can motorcycles turn into waterskis? And what's this "Hollywood dirt" that Sasha supposedly has on Vin? Listen to find out. Also, Sasha and Steven recommend CASTLE ROCK and HIGH FLYING BIRD, a TV show and a film both starring arguably the sexiest man alive (spoiler alert: it's André Holland). André Holland has turned in quietly powerful and honest performances in “42,” “Selma,” his leading role on the Stephen King-inspired Hulu series “Castle Rock,” and more. From his early days of studying theater and using Backstage, to his breakout in Steven Soderbergh’s “The Knick” and Barry Jenkins’ Oscar-winning “Moonlight,” the Alabama native has excelled at following his gut to stellar projects and collaborators. He now leads the new Netflix film “High Flying Bird,” a sports drama from screenwriter Tarell Alvin McCraney filmed entirely on an iPhone by Soderbergh, with a story suggested by André himself. For over 50 years, Backstage has been the most trusted place for actors to find jobs and career advice, and for casting professionals to find the right performers for their projects. “In the Envelope: An Awards Podcast” features interviews with some of the most exciting actors and storytellers working today. Last week, you heard an essay by Amy Krouse Rosenthal -- "You May Want to Marry my Husband." It was published just days before she died of ovarian cancer. Today, André Holland of "High Flying Bird" reads the essay her husband Jason wrote in response last summer, and we hear from Jason himself about how he's doing today.
In the midst of a pro basketball lockout, sports agent Ray Burke finds himself caught in the face-off between the league and the players. His career is on the line, but Ray is playing for higher stakes. The outcome raises questions of who owns the game – and who ought to. Together, they talk Hall's adaptation choices, the surprising backstory to her taking on the book, both the practical and story logic to the film's use of black and white, whether or not the cast totally works for the material, how successful the project is in its consideration of colorism and racial passing in Harlem in the 1920s, and a whole lot more.SUBSCRIBE TO EXCLUSIVE CONTENT AND OUR BACK CATALOG OF 400+ EPISODES: https://app.redcircle.com/shows/7655b7ec-dc57-47c9-ab96-1a8fa02f6573/exclusive-content JOIN OUR PATREON:https://www.patreon.com/BMCJFOLLOW BLACK MEN CAN'T JUMP [IN HOLLYWOOD]:https://twitter.com/blackmenpodcasthttps://www.instagram.com/blackmenpodcastBUY BLACK MEN CAN'T JUMP [IN HOLLYWOOD] MERCH:https://www.teepublic.com/stores/black-men-can-t-jump-in-hollywoodProduced by Skyler HanrathSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/black-men-cant-jump-in-hollywood/exclusive-contentAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
